How are you? 标准回答是Good, how are you?,不是汇报身体状况。
Dana(同组同事,入职多年的老员工) You(新人,入职两个月,正在接咖啡)
Dana: Morning! Oh good, you found the good coffee. The machine on three is still broken.
You: Yeah, someone told me this one’s the good one. I’ve been coming down here every day this week.
Dana: Smart. How was your weekend?
You: Good, good. Quiet. I finally unpacked the last box. How about you?
Dana: Hanging in there. One of those weekends where you blink and it’s Monday.
(laughs) You: I know that feeling. Did you get any of that rain on Saturday?
Dana: Oh, we got soaked. We were at my kid’s soccer game. Forty minutes in the pouring rain.
You: Did they win, at least?
Dana: They’re six. Nobody wins. Everybody gets a snack.
(laughs) You: That’s the right system. Okay, I should get upstairs.
Dana: You’re on four, right?
You: Yeah, four. Do you know if the all-hands is still at ten?
Dana: I think so. They moved it from the auditorium to Zoom, I heard.
You: Oh, good to know. Thanks.
(as the doors open) Dana: Have a good one.
You: You too. See you at the all-hands.

1. How are you?
标准回答是 Good, how are you?,然后各走各的。
Good, quiet. How about you?——只回答不反问,对话就死在你手里。
4. Have a good one
Have a good one(祝你今天/今晚顺利)适用于任何对象、任何时间,比 Goodbye 自然得多。同类:Have a good night.、Take care.、See you around.
Dana(同组同事,正在跟另外两个同事拼桌) Kevin(隔壁组同事,很外向,饭桌上嗓门最大) You(端着餐盘站在旁边,不确定该不该坐下)
Kevin: Hey! You eating alone? Come sit.
You: Are you sure? I don’t wanna crash your lunch.
(laughs) Kevin: Sit down. There’s no reservation system.
Dana: Yeah, sit. This is Kevin, he’s in platform. Kevin, this is Wei — he’s on my team.
Kevin: Oh, you’re the export guy. I heard about the 500 thing.
(laughs) You: That’s me. Word travels fast.
Kevin: Small company. So how are you liking it so far?
You: It’s good. A lot to learn, but people have been really helpful.
Kevin: Yeah, we’re pretty good about that. Where’d you come from before this?
You: I did my master’s here, then worked at a startup for a year. It was chaos.
Kevin: Chaos how?
You: I was the only backend person. I did deployments, on-call, and once I fixed the printer.
(laughs) Kevin: The printer. That’s a startup for you.
Dana: Okay, my turn for a question. Kevin — did you end up going to that concert?
Kevin: I did, and I’m still tired. It ended at one in the morning.
You: On a school night?
(laughs) Kevin: “School night.” I’m using that.
Dana: He says that every time and then does it again.
Kevin: It’s true. Okay — anyone want the last cookie? I’m not gonna eat it.
You: I’ll take it. Thanks.
Kevin: Alright, I’ve got a two o’clock. Good talking to you, Wei.
You: Yeah, you too. Thanks for letting me sit.
Kevin: Anytime. Seriously — just sit down next time, you don’t have to ask.

|---|---|---|
Can I sit here? Is it okay? | 问得太正式,饭桌气氛会被你搞紧 | Mind if I join you guys? |
Sorry to interrupt your lunch. | 道歉式加入,把自己放在低处 | I don't wanna crash your lunch — are you sure? |
I will not disturb you. | 直接退出,等于放弃社交 | Mind if I grab a chair? |
What are you talking about? | 太直接,像在盘问 | What'd I miss? |
I don't know what to say. How's your week going? |
Thank you for inviting me to eat. | 过于正式,像在谢恩 | Thanks for letting me sit. |
Mind if I join you guys? Kevin 最后那句 you don't have to ask 就是这个意思。
2. crash
Can I crash your lunch?、Mind if I crash?、He crashed our meeting. I don't wanna crash your lunch(我不想硬插进来)。
What'd I miss?(我错过什么了)、How's your week going?、Did you see the game last night?——任何一句都比沉默好。
4. My turn for a question
Kevin(刚讲了个梗,全桌在笑) Dana(看出你没跟上) You(完全不知道笑点在哪)
Kevin: … and then he pushed it to main on a Friday. On a FRIDAY.
(smiling, not laughing) You: Okay, I have to ask. I don’t get it.
Kevin: Oh! Right, you’re new. So we had an outage once because someone merged on a Friday afternoon.
You: And nobody’s around on Friday afternoon?
Kevin: Exactly. So “pushing to main on a Friday” is basically a curse word here.
You: Oh, that’s actually funny. Okay, now I get it.
Dana: Good for you for asking. Most people just fake-laugh for three months.
You: I fake-laughed the first two weeks. It’s exhausting.
(laughs) Kevin: Yeah, don’t do that. Nobody cares if you ask.
You: Okay, so what else is a curse word here? I’d rather know now.
Dana: “Quick sync.” That’s a meeting invite you should be scared of.
You: Oh no. I got one of those yesterday.
(laughs) Kevin: My condolences.
You: Is there anything that means the opposite of what it says?
Dana: “Sure, let’s take it offline” means “this meeting is going to be long.”
You: Okay, that’s useful. And what about “no worries if not”?
Dana: That one’s real. People say it when they mean it.
You: Good. Because I’ve been saying it a lot.
Kevin: You’re fine. You’re picking it up faster than I did.

I have to ask — I don't get it. |
What does this mean? I don't understand. | 太笼统,对方不知道要解释什么 | Why is Friday a thing? |
Can you explain the joke? | 把笑话拆开讲就没意思了,气氛会僵 | Okay, I have to ask. |
My English is not good, I can't understand jokes. | 自我贬低,把责任推给语言能力 | I'm still learning the inside jokes here. |
Ha ha ha, very funny.(假笑) | 假的夸奖比沉默更尴尬 | That one went over my head. |
Please speak more slowly. |
I have to ask — I don't get it. 或者 That one went over my head.
2. over my head
That went over my head(那个我没听懂)、That's over my head(那个太深了我不懂)。
pushing to main on a Friday、quick sync
4. no worries if not 是真心话,不是客套。
No worries if not(不行也没关系)、Totally fine if that doesn't work 这类说法在美国职场是字面意思。
Dana(同组同事,两个孩子,住在郊区) You(新人,刚搬来这个城市) Kevin(路过拿咖啡,插了一句)
Dana: Oh, it’s finally not raining.
You: I know. I almost didn’t recognize the sun.
Dana: Right? So what are you up to this weekend?
You: Not much planned. I might go look at apartments. My lease is up in two months.
Dana: Oh, where are you looking?
You: Somewhere on the east side. I want to be closer to the train.
Dana: Smart. Do you have a car?
You: No. That’s the problem. Everything cheap is far from the train.
Dana: Yeah, that’s how it works here. What’s your budget, if you don’t mind me asking?
You: Around fifteen hundred. Is that realistic?
Dana: For a studio, yeah. For a one-bedroom, you’d have to go further out.
You: Good to know. That saves me a lot of searching.
(walking in) Kevin: Sorry, I heard “budget.” Are we talking rent?
Dana: Wei’s apartment hunting.
Kevin: Oh, look at the Riverside building. That’s where I live. Nine minutes to the train.
You: Is it expensive?
Kevin: It’s fine if you split it. Do you have a roommate?
You: Not yet. That might be a whole other project.
(laughs) Kevin: Yeah, finding a roommate is worse than finding a job. Anyway — you guys want to see a movie Sunday?
Dana: I can’t, we’ve got the kids’ thing. Wei, you should go.
You: Maybe. What are you seeing?
Kevin: That new one everyone’s talking about. The two-hour one.
You: Oh — I’ve been meaning to see that. Yeah, I’m in.
Kevin: Cool, I’ll text you the time.
Dana: Look at that. Two weeks in and you already have weekend plans.
You: It took me a year at my last job.

|---|---|---|
Where do you live? How much is your rent? | 直接问太私人,美国同事会不舒服 | 先聊自己再问对方,或加 if you don't mind me asking |
I have no plan. | 生硬,而且对话就此结束 | Not much planned — maybe some apartment hunting. |
Do you want to play with me on Sunday? | 中文直译,成年人不这么说 | Want to see a movie Sunday? |
I am free, so I can go. | 像在说明自己没别的事,不太给面子 | I've been meaning to see that. I'm in. |
It is too expensive for me. | 可以,但没说明条件 | It's fine if you split it. |
Thank you for inviting me, I am very happy. | 过度正式,把周末邀约说成大事 | Cool, I'll be there. |
What are you up to this weekend?
I'm looking around fifteen hundred — is that realistic?
3. I've been meaning to see that 比 Sure 好十倍。
I've been meaning to try that place.、I've been wanting to check that out.
Kevin 那句 you guys want to see a movie Sunday?
Kevin(讲得正起劲,已经聊了十分钟) Dana(也在旁边,自己也有会) You(三点半有个会,还剩五分钟,不好意思打断)
Kevin: … and that’s when I realized the whole dashboard was pulling from the wrong table. Three months of bad data.
You: Oh man. That’s rough.
Kevin: Right? So we had to backfill everything. It took—
You: Sorry — I hate to cut you off, but I’ve got a three-thirty.
Kevin: Oh, no worries. Go.
You: Finish the story tomorrow. I want to know how it ends.
(laughs) Kevin: Deal.
Dana: I’ve got the same one. Walk over together?
You: Yeah, let’s.
(in the hallway) Dana: Hey, that was smooth. The “finish the story tomorrow” thing.
You: Oh — someone told me that works better than just leaving.
Dana: It does. Kevin will talk for an hour if you let him.
You: I like him, though. He’s easy to talk to.
Dana: He is. He also has no idea when to stop.
(laughs) You: Noted.
(at the door) Dana: Okay — I’ll grab the room. You get the coffee.
You: Deal. Give me two minutes.
Dana: You’ve got three. It’s Dave presenting.
You: Oh. Then I have time to make a fresh cup.

Sorry — I've got a three-thirty, I have to run. |
I am sorry, I must go now. | 太正式,而且没说为什么 | I hate to cut you off, but I've got a meeting. |
I don't want to talk anymore. | 直白到伤人 | Finish the story tomorrow. |
Excuse me, I have something to do. | something 很含糊,像在找借口 | I've got a hard stop at three-thirty. |
Let us talk next time. | 等于没说,对方会觉得被敷衍 | Finish the story tomorrow — I want to know how it ends. |
Finish the story tomorrow. I want to know how it ends. Sorry, I have to go
I've got a three-thirty I have something to do 会引出 Oh, what's up?,你还得再解释一遍。
3. hard stop
I've got a hard stop at four
He has no idea when to stop(他不知道什么时候该停)是安全吐槽;工资、能力、外貌、家庭都不是。

1. Have a good one
/ˈhævə ˈgʊd wʌn/——have a 连读成 /hævə/,整句像三个音节。
2. How's it going?
3. Hanging in there 的重音在 there。
hanging in THERE——重音在后,表示"还在撑”。
4. That went over my head 里的 over 要轻。
