I'll be taking PTO next Monday and Tuesday.I'm not feeling great today, so I'm gonna take a sick day.
Coverage(交接):Who's covering while you're out?
I need to take a few personal days. Family stuff. Do you need to go through HR for anything?——如果只是三五天的事假,答案是 No, I don't think so.;如果是家人重病这类更长的假,才会提到 medical leave 或者 FMLA,那时候是 HR 跟你对接,不用在经理面前展开。
Let me put it in the calendar and tell the team.——写进日历、同步给经理,这样出了事责任才清楚。 I wish I could, but I'm already on call Wednesday that week.
Erin(你的直属经理,带这个团队两年) Wei(你,已经算好年假和事假的日子)
Erin: Hey, come on in. How was your weekend?
Wei: Good. Quiet. Hey, before we get into the agenda, I wanted to talk about some time off.
Erin: Yeah, go ahead.
Wei: So I’m gonna be out the week of the 14th. I checked the calendar and there’s nothing big that week, but I wanted to flag it early.
Erin: The 14th through the 18th?
Wei: Yeah, five days. I’ve got the PTO for it.
Erin: Then you’re all set. Put it in Workday and I’ll approve it today.
Wei: Will do. I’ll write up a handoff doc before I go.
Erin: What’s the status on the migration? That’s the one I’d worry about.
Wei: Funny you ask. I want phase one done before I leave. That’s the 11th, so it’s tight.
Erin: And if it slips?
Wei: Then I’d rather move my trip than leave it half done. I don’t think it’ll come to that, though.
Erin: Okay. Let’s check in Friday and decide then.
Wei: Works for me.
Erin: Who’s covering while you’re out?
Wei: I was gonna ask Dana to cover standup and the vendor emails. She’s fine with it, but I wanted to run it by you first.
Erin: Yeah, that works. Just make sure she knows where everything is.
Wei: I’ll put it all in one place and walk her through it before I go.
Erin: Good. And set your OOO this time. Last time you were out, people kept emailing you.
Wei: Yeah, my bad. Auto-reply and Slack status, both.
Erin: Anything else?
Wei: One more thing. I need a personal day on the 3rd. Family stuff.
Erin: Yeah, no problem. Just get it on the calendar.
Wei: Thanks. And I’ve still got two floating holidays. Those don’t roll over, right?
Erin: Right. Use ’em or lose ’em by December.
Wei: Okay, I’ll take one in November then.
Erin: Sounds good. Have fun. Where are you headed, if you don’t mind me asking?
Wei: Just home to see my parents. Nothing exciting.
Erin: Nice. Family time’s good. All right, so — the migration.

|---|---|---|
I want to ask for leave next week. | ask for leave 是中式书面说法,像在递申请书 | I'm gonna be out next week. |
I want to apply for my annual leave. |
Please approve my vacation. | 把经理当审批机关,姿态太低 | I'll put it in Workday today. |
I have something to do that day. | 像在找借口,其实没人问你原因 | I need a personal day. Family stuff. |
Sorry to trouble you, I know the team is busy. | 过度道歉,美式职场里显得没底气 | I know it's a busy month, so I've already lined up coverage. |
1. I wanted to talk about some time off.
I need to ask you something I've got some time off I want to flag.
I want to ask for leave,对话就变成申请,你就要等一个「批准」。
I need a personal day. Family stuff. Just some stuff I need to handle.
Do floating holidays roll over?
Erin(你的直属经理) Wei(你,早上起来发烧,还没到上班时间)
Erin: Hey, Wei. Morning. What’s up?
💬 艾琳: 嘿,Wei。
Wei: Hey, Erin. Sorry to message this early. I’m not feeling great today, so I’m gonna take a sick day.
Erin: Oh, no worries. Yeah, take the day. Anything I need to know about?
Wei: I woke up with a fever. Nothing urgent on my end, but I have the vendor call at eleven.
Erin: I can take that. I know that account.
Wei: Would you? That’d be a big help. The notes are in the shared doc.
Erin: Yeah, just send me the link.
Wei: Sending it now. Then I’m gonna go back to bed.
Erin: Sounds like a plan. Do you want me to mark you out, or are you doing it?
Wei: I’ll do it. Calendar, Slack status, and the auto-reply.
Erin: Good, do the auto-reply. Otherwise the client emails just pile up.
Wei: Yeah, learned that one the hard way. And standup, I’m not gonna make it.
Erin: Don’t worry about standup. I’ll tell them.
Wei: Thanks. Sorry for the short notice.
Erin: You’re fine, it happens. Anything else on your plate I should keep an eye on?
Wei: The PR for the reporting fix needs a review, but it’s not blocking anyone. It can wait till tomorrow.
Erin: Okay, I’ll leave it. Are you thinking you’ll be back tomorrow, or should I plan for you being out?
Wei: Tomorrow, I think. I’ll message you in the morning either way.
Erin: Works. And if you’re still feeling bad, take the second day. Seriously, don’t be a hero.
Wei: Ha. Appreciate it. One thing, do I need to log it somewhere?
Erin: Just put it in as sick time when you’re back. No note or anything for one day.
Wei: Great. Okay, I’m gonna go lie down.
Erin: Go. Feel better. Text me if you need anything.
Wei: Thanks, Erin. Bye.

| I’ll log it as sick time when I’m back.

|---|---|---|
My body is not comfortable. | 「身体不舒服」直译,美国人听不懂 | I'm not feeling great today. |
I have a sick. / I'm not feeling well. |
I caught a cold, my throat hurts, my head hurts too. | 病情汇报没人在等,也不治病 | I woke up with a fever.
I will not come tomorrow. | 生硬宣布,像通知不像是请假 | I'm gonna be out today. |
I need to rest for one day. | 像在请病假养身体,但没说清哪天不上班 | I'm taking a sick day today. |
Can I have a holiday today? | holiday 在美式里是公共假日,不能这么用 | I'm gonna take a sick day today. |
Please don't deduct my salary. | 把考勤和工资摆上台面,非常尴尬 | I'll log it as sick time. |
2. 经理说 take the second day 不是客套。
Don't be a hero./Take the second day. Appreciate it, I'll let you know.
3. No note or anything for one day —— 证明的规则。
I'll be offline today./I'm not gonna make standup./I'll check Slack once a day. I'll check Slack once a day
Erin(你的直属经理) Wei(你,周三下午收到家里的消息)
Erin: Hey. You said it was urgent — everything okay?
Wei: Not really. I got a message from home this afternoon. I need to take a few personal days.
Erin: Okay. How many days are we talking?
Wei: Three, I think. Starting Friday, so Friday, Monday, Tuesday.
Erin: And you’d be back Wednesday?
Wei: Yeah, Wednesday. I’m flying out Thursday night, so I’ll work Thursday.
Erin: All right. Do you need to go through HR for anything?
Wei: I don’t think so. It’s just a few days.
Erin: Okay. Because if it turns into something longer — a medical leave, FMLA — HR handles that, not me. Just so you know.
Wei: Good to know. I’ll say something if it goes that way.
Erin: What’s on your plate that needs to move?
Wei: Two things. The vendor review on Monday, and the migration check-in. Everything else can sit for a week.
Erin: The review can move to Thursday. I’ll email them.
Wei: Thanks. And I’ll ask Dana to cover the check-in. She’s already got context on it.
Erin: Good. Send her the notes today so she’s not reading them Monday morning.
Wei: Yeah, doing that right after this.
Erin: And set your OOO. Write that you’re out until Wednesday, and put my name down for urgent stuff.
Wei: Will do. Do you want me to put the days in Workday as personal time?
Erin: Yeah, personal days. If it ends up being more than three, we’ll figure out the rest.
Wei: Okay. Thanks, Erin. I know it’s short notice.
Erin: Don’t worry about it. Go take care of your family. Just keep me posted.
Wei: I will. Thanks.

| I know it’s short notice. |
| Just keep me posted. |
1. Family stuff.
说完就停,不用补 my mother is sick 或者 I have to deal with something。 Just some stuff I need to handle 或者 I'd rather not get into it 都是正常回答。
3. Do you need to go through HR for anything?
I don't think so 就行。
Is that a personal day or PTO?——类型填错影响余额,问清反而显得你靠谱。
Erin(你的直属经理) Wei(你,明天开始休假) Dana(顶你班的同事,被拉进这次通话)
Erin: Okay, you’re out all next week. Walk me through the handoff.
Wei: Sure. There’s one handoff doc, and everything’s linked from the top of it.
Dana: I’ve got access. I went through it this morning.
Wei: Good. Page one is what’s live this week. Page two is background, so you don’t have to read it.
Erin: Who’s covering standup?
Dana: Me. I’ll run it Monday and Tuesday. Nothing changes for the team.
Wei: You’re on the vendor emails, right? I moved the ones that can wait to next Wednesday.
Dana: Which ones can’t wait?
Wei: Just the renewal thread. If they push back on pricing, ping Erin.
Erin: That’s fine. Anything on the migration?
Wei: Phase one’s done. Phase two doesn’t start till I’m back, and I already told the vendor that.
Erin: Okay. Now the OOO. Say what?
Wei: Out of office until the 21st. Urgent stuff goes to Dana, and I’ll have limited access to email.
Dana: Do you want me to copy you on anything?
Wei: No. If it’s actually urgent, just text me. That’s the one channel I’ll check.
Erin: Good. Calendar blocked, Slack status set?
Wei: Both. OOO until the 21st, and the auto-reply’s on.
Dana: Perfect. Then I’ll post in the team channel so nobody’s guessing.
Wei: That’d be great. Thanks, Dana.
Erin: Good, then I think we’re covered. Enjoy the time off.
Wei: Thanks, both. See you in a week.

2. coverage
I'll check Slack once a day 就一定要真的看。 I'll have limited access to email,这样你偶尔回一封,别人反而觉得你敬业。
写 Back on the 21st.
If they push back on pricing, ping Erin.

Marcus(同事,周五轮到他 on-call) Wei(你,那个周五排了别的事)
Marcus: Hey, you got a sec?
Wei: Yeah, what’s up?
Marcus: Any chance you could cover my Friday? Something came up.
Wei: Friday as in tomorrow?
Marcus: Yeah, sorry. I know it’s short notice.
Wei: Ah, man. I wish I could, but I’m already on call Wednesday that week, and I’m not doing two days.
Marcus: Oh, no worries. Worth asking.
Wei: Hang on — what about a swap? Take my Wednesday, and I’ll take your Friday.
Marcus: Wait, Wednesday works. Would you actually do that?
Wei: Yeah. If you take Wednesday off my hands, Friday’s fine. Let’s swap.
Marcus: You’re a lifesaver. I owe you one.
Wei: You’d do the same for me.
Marcus: Do we need to tell anyone, or just put it in the calendar?
Wei: Both. Let me put it in the calendar and tell the team. I’ll copy Erin.
Marcus: Good call. Last time we swapped, nobody knew and I got paged anyway.
Wei: Yeah, that’s the whole point of writing it down. Who’s the on-call lead this month?
Marcus: Priya.
💬 马库斯: Priya。
Wei: Okay, I’ll ping her so she has it too.
Marcus: Perfect. And if something blows up on Friday, call me instead of paging.
Wei: Deal. But you’re on the hook for Wednesday, remember.
Marcus: Ha. I know. Thanks, Wei. Seriously.

I wish I could, but I'm already on call Wednesday that week.
拒绝之后加一句 What about a swap? 或者 Can we do Wednesday instead?,人情就还在。
4. on-call

|---|---|---|
I will take a rest tomorrow. | take a rest 是中式搭配,而且没说要请假,同事以为你只是歇会儿 | I'm gonna take some time off tomorrow.(我明天请个假。) |
I want to ask for leave. | ask for leave 是中式书面说法;美式的 leave 多指病假、兵役这类正式假 | I'd like to request some time off.(我想请个假。) |
I have something to do tomorrow, so I want to ask for a holiday. | holiday 在美式里是公共假日,不是你的私人假;而且理由根本不用说 | I'm gonna take a personal day tomorrow.(我明天请一天事假。) |
My body is not comfortable. | 「身体不舒服」直译,美国人听不懂 | I'm not feeling great today.(我今天不太舒服。) |
I have a sick. / I'm not feeling well.(我生病了。) |
Please approve my vacation, thank you for your understanding. | 语气像在提交申请书,还提前道谢,显得低人一等 | I'll put it in Workday today. Let me know if that week's a problem.(我今天就填进系统,那周有问题跟我说。) |
I will go to travel with my family. | go to travel 是语病,而且没人问你为什么休假 | I'll be out next week.(我下周不在。) |
Sorry to trouble you, I know the team is very busy. | 过度道歉,美式职场里反而显得没底气 | I know it's a busy month, so I've already lined up coverage.(我知道这个月忙,所以交接已经安排好了。) |
Can I rest for three days? | 像在求许可,而不是通知安排 | I'm gonna be out for three days, through Wednesday.(我请三天,到周三。) |
I must take a leave because my mother is ill. | must 太重,病情细节也不必交代 | I need to take a few personal days. Family stuff.(我得请几天事假,家里的事。) |
I will not come tomorrow, I have a private thing. | 生硬宣布,private thing 这个说法不存在 | Heads-up, I'll be out tomorrow. I'll set my OOO.(跟你说一声,我明天不在,OOO 我会设好。) |
Please don't deduct my salary. | 把考勤和工资摆到台面上,非常尴尬;PTO 是福利不是恩赐 | I'll log it as PTO. Is this a paid day?(我按 PTO 登记。
I’m not feeling great today, so I’m gonna take a sick day. I’ll be offline today and back tomorrow.
I’m gonna be out the week of the 14th. I’ve got the PTO for it, and I’ll put it in Workday today.
I want to ask for leave
I need to take a few personal days. Family stuff. I’ll be out Friday through Tuesday.
Can you cover standup while I’m out? Everything’s in the handoff doc, and I’ll walk you through it Thursday.
If it's urgent, ping Erin.,才算完整。
5. 换班
Any chance you could cover my Friday? / Any chance we could swap? Let me put it in the calendar and tell the team.
I’m out of office until the 21st. For anything urgent, please reach out to Dana. I’ll have limited access to email.
Do floating holidays roll over? / Do I need a doctor’s note for this?

1. I'll be out 是最省事的说法。
I'll be out Friday. I will not be in the office 带原因的固定搭配有 out sick(病假)、out on PTO(年假)、out of office(通用)。
Sorry to bother you、I hope it's okay。
Heads-up, I'll be out Friday. 比 I have something to tell you 直接有效,也比突然甩一句 I won't come tomorrow 礼貌。
I'm taking a sick day.(我不舒服)、I need a personal day.(我有私事)、I'll be on PTO.(我休假)。 Is that a personal day or PTO?
1. I'm gonna be out 里的 gonna 要连读。
读成 /ˈɡənə/,gonna be out 连起来像「嘎纳比奥」。
2. Any chance you could…?
Any chance you could cover my Friday?
3. Sorry for the short notice.
4. I owe you one.
I OWE you ONE——重音在 owe 和 one 上,才有人情味。这句是同事之间最常用的道谢,比 Thank you very much 自然得多。
