You(数学系大三,在学校 tutoring center 做兼职家教) Daniel(大一学生,微积分 I 期中考了 58 分)
You: Hey, Daniel? I’m Wei — I’ll be your tutor this semester.
Daniel: Hey. Yeah, my advisor said I should come.
You: Okay, so before we start on anything, tell me what’s going on in the class.
Daniel: I mean, I did fine in high school. I got a 58 on the first midterm.
You: Okay. Was it a time thing, or did you look at it and not know where to start?
Daniel: Mostly the second one. The limits stuff made sense in class and then on the test I just froze.
You: That’s actually really common. What would help most — reviewing the old material, or staying on top of what you’re doing now?
Daniel: I don’t know. Both?
You: Okay, my honest take? Let’s do mostly current stuff, and I’ll pull in the old material when it comes up. Otherwise you’re always behind.
Daniel: That sounds better, yeah.
You: How often do you wanna meet? Once a week is standard.
Daniel: Is twice a week possible?
You: It is, but let me push back a little. Twice a week only helps if you do work in between. If you don’t, you’re paying for me to watch you struggle.
Daniel: Yeah, that’s fair. Let’s do once a week and see.
You: Good. And one thing — I’m not gonna do your homework for you. If you bring me a problem, I’ll ask you questions until you find it.
Daniel: Wait, so you won’t just tell me?
You: I’ll tell you if you’re really stuck. But if I just do it, you’ll be back here next week with the same problem.
Daniel: Okay. That’s annoying but I get it.
You: Everybody says that. Okay — does Wednesday at four work every week?
Daniel: Wednesdays work. Can we do the same room?
You: I’ll book it. And between sessions, email me if you get stuck. I answer within a day.
Daniel: For real? You don’t have to do that.
You: It’s faster than waiting a week. Okay — show me what you’ve got from today’s class.

| I’ll ask you questions until you find it.
1. Let me push back a little
No, that won't work 太硬;Let me push back a little
I'm not gonna do your homework for you
Did you run out of time, or did you get stuck on a concept?
4. 一句 email me if you get stuck 能大幅提升效果。
(I answer within a day),不然学生会期待你秒回。
You(家教) Daniel(学生,卡在一道求极限的题上)
Daniel: Okay, so number three I just skipped.
You: Okay. Read it to me.
Daniel: “Find the limit as x approaches three of x squared minus nine over x minus three.”
You: Good. What happens if you just plug in three?
Daniel: You get zero over zero.
You: Right. And what does that tell you?
Daniel: That it’s undefined? So there’s no limit?
You: That’s the trap. Zero over zero doesn’t mean no limit — it means there’s something you haven’t done yet. So what could you do to that fraction?
Daniel: Um. Factor it?
You: Try it. What’s x squared minus nine?
Daniel: That’s a difference of squares. So x minus three, x plus three.
You: Okay. So now write the whole thing out. Don’t skip steps.
Daniel: So it’s x minus three times x plus three, over x minus three.
You: And what can you do now that you couldn’t do before?
Daniel: Cancel the x minus three. So it’s just x plus three.
You: And then?
Daniel: Then plug in three … and it’s six.
You: That’s the answer. Now — say back to me why the canceling was allowed.
Daniel: Because … x isn’t actually three? It’s approaching three.
You: Exactly. That’s the whole idea behind limits, and you just said it yourself.
Daniel: Okay, that actually makes sense now. Why didn’t my teacher say it like that?
You: She probably did. It’s different when you have to say it out loud.
Daniel: So do I do the same thing for number four?
You: Look at number four and tell me. What’s different about it?
Daniel: It’s got a square root on top. So factoring won’t work the same way.
You: Good. So what do you do when there’s a square root?
Daniel: Multiply by the conjugate?
You: There you go. Try it, and I’ll stop you if you go off track.

What happens if you plug in three?、What does that tell you?、And then?——这三句话能带学生走完全程。
2. Say it back to me 是检验"真懂"的唯一办法。
学生点头说 Yeah, I get it 完全不可靠。
This is easy、This is simple This one trips up a lot of people(这题坑了不少人)或者 This is a common one——同样的意思,学生的感受完全不同。
4. There you go 是"这就对了"。
Exactly.、Now you've got it.、Nice.
You(大二,统计学课上有个推导没听懂) Marcus(learning center 的辅导老师,统计学研究生)
Marcus: Hey, what are we working on today?
You: Statistics. There’s a step in class I didn’t follow, and I don’t even know how to ask about it.
Marcus: That’s fine. Start wherever you can. What’s the topic?
You: Confidence intervals. I can do the formula. It’s the interpretation part that I don’t get.
Marcus: Good — that’s a really specific thing to be stuck on. What does the professor say it means?
You: She says “we’re 95% confident the true mean is in this interval.” But I don’t know what “95% confident” means.
Marcus: Okay. Can I ask you a question first? If you took a hundred different samples, what would you get?
You: A hundred different intervals?
Marcus: Right. And in about ninety-five of them, the true mean would be inside. So where’s the randomness?
You: In the interval, not in the mean. Oh.
Marcus: Yeah. That’s the thing almost everybody gets wrong. The mean doesn’t move.
You: So saying “95% confident” is about the method, not about this one interval.
Marcus: Say that again, slower.
You: The method catches the true value 95% of the time. This particular interval either has it or it doesn’t.
Marcus: That’s exactly right. Now — how would you explain it to a friend who’s never taken stats?
You: I’d say … you’re not betting on the number, you’re betting on the process.
Marcus: Write that down. That’s better than the textbook’s version.
You: Can I ask one more thing? How do I ask my professor about this without sounding dumb?
Marcus: Say what you just said to me. “I can do the formula, it’s the interpretation I don’t get.”
You: That’s it?
Marcus: That’s it. That sentence tells her exactly where you are. Nobody thinks that’s dumb.
You: Okay. That’s actually really useful. Thanks, Marcus.
Marcus: Come back before the final. Same time works.

1. I don't even know how to ask about it 是完全合格的提问方式。
2. I can do the formula. It's the interpretation I don't get.
I can do the setup, it's the proof I don't get.
3. Learning center
(I want to understand how this type of problem works),但期待对方给你做完,会被明确拒绝。
4. Say that again, slower
Mrs. Alvarez(Daniel 的妈妈,付学费,两周发一次消息问情况) You(家教)
You: Hi, Mrs. Alvarez. How are you?
Mrs. Alvarez: I’m fine, thanks. I just wanted an update on Daniel. Is he improving?
You: He is, yeah. His last quiz was a 74, and the one before that was a 58.
Mrs. Alvarez: Oh, that’s good. That’s a big jump. So he’s doing well now?
You: I’d say he’s doing better. I don’t want to oversell it, though.
Mrs. Alvarez: What do you mean?
💬 Alvarez
You: The 74 was on limits, which is what we’ve been drilling. The next unit is derivatives, and it’s harder.
Mrs. Alvarez: So he might go back down.
💬 Alvarez
You: He might, on the first quiz. That’s normal. What I’m watching is whether he keeps doing the work between sessions.
Mrs. Alvarez: Is he? Doing the work?
💬 Alvarez
You: Usually. Two weeks ago he came in with nothing done, and we talked about it. Since then he’s been bringing completed work.
Mrs. Alvarez: Good. I told him — if he doesn’t do the work, I’m not paying for this.
You: I get that. And honestly, that’s the right call. The session is one hour; the rest of the week is on him.
Mrs. Alvarez: Right. So what should I be doing? Should I check his homework?
You: I’d be careful with that. At his age, checking it can backfire.
Mrs. Alvarez: So what do I do?
💬 Alvarez
You: Two things. Ask him to explain one problem out loud at dinner. And make sure he gets to our session on time.
Mrs. Alvarez: Explain it out loud. To me? I don’t know calculus.
💬 Alvarez
You: That’s actually the point. If he can explain it to someone who doesn’t know it, he knows it.
Mrs. Alvarez: Okay. That I can do. And should we keep twice a week?
You: Not yet. Let’s see how the derivatives quiz goes. If he drops below 70, we’ll talk about adding a session.
Mrs. Alvarez: Okay. Thank you — I appreciate you being straight with me.
💬 Alvarez
You: Of course. I’ll text you after the quiz.

只说 He's doing great!
He came in with nothing done(他什么都没做就来了)是行为;He's lazy(他懒)是评价。
Nothing, just leave it to me——那会让家长觉得被排除在外。
If he drops below 70, we'll talk about adding a session 比 Let's see how it goes
Daniel(上了一个半月课,想调整安排) You(家教)
Daniel: Hey. Can we talk about the schedule for a second?
You: Yeah, go ahead.
Daniel: I think I need to stop. Or at least cut down.
You: Okay. Can I ask what’s going on?
Daniel: I picked up a shift at work. And honestly, the twice-a-week thing my mom wants is too much.
You: Okay, let’s separate those two things. What do you actually want?
Daniel: I don’t wanna stop. I just can’t do Wednesdays anymore.
You: That’s easy, then. We can move to Tuesdays or Thursdays. Which one?
Daniel: Thursdays. But — can I say something?
You: Go ahead.
Daniel: I don’t think the sessions are helping as much as they should. We spend a lot of time going over stuff I already know.
You: Okay, that’s fair feedback. Let me tell you why I do that, and then you tell me if it changes your mind.
Daniel: Okay.
You: Every time you’ve lost points, it wasn’t on new material. It was on algebra you learned in tenth grade. So I’m patching holes.
Daniel: … I didn’t know that.
You: So here’s what I’ll do. I’ll send you five problems before each session. If you get them right, we skip that topic entirely and go straight to the new stuff.
Daniel: That’s way better. So the session is only for the stuff I get wrong.
You: Exactly. That puts the work on you, which is where it should be.
Daniel: Okay. Can you send the first set this weekend?
You: I’ll send them Saturday. And Daniel — about your mom. Do you want to tell her about the schedule change, or should I?
Daniel: Can you? She’ll listen to you.
You: I’ll text her. But I’m gonna tell her the real reason, not a made-up one.
Daniel: Yeah. That’s fine.

Can I ask what's going on? 急着说 But you're improving!
2. Let's separate those two things
(Let's separate the two issues)和家庭沟通里都通用。
先说 That's fair feedback,再说 Let me tell you why I do that——顺序对了,对方才会听你的解释。
你可以接下"由我来说"这件事,但不能编理由——I'm gonna tell her the real reason, not a made-up one 这句话既保住了关系,也划清了边界。

I can do [我会的部分]. It’s [我不会的部分] I don’t get.
- I can do the formula. It’s the interpretation I don’t get.
- I can do the setup. It’s the proof I don’t get.
- I can find the sources. It’s the organization I don’t get.

What does that tell you?、And then?、So what do you do when there's a square root?——
2. Say it back to me 里的 back 要重读。
say it BACK to me——重音在 back,强调"还给我、说出来"。
3. There you go 读成一口气,中间不停。
4. I'd be careful with that 里的 I’d 要弱读。
