| mock test | 模考 | a full mock test = 一次完整模考 |
评分标准里 development(展开)、organization(组织)、delivery(表达)占的权重比生僻词大得多。
Kevin(培训机构课程顾问,说话很快,桌上摆着排课表) You(大三,托福考过一次 88,想冲 100)
Kevin: Hi there — do you have an appointment, or are you just walking in?
You: Just walking in. Is that okay?
Kevin: Totally fine. Grab a seat. So — which test are you prepping for?
You: TOEFL. I took it once and got an 88. I need a 100 for the programs I’m applying to.
Kevin: Okay. Break it down for me — what were the four sections?
You: Reading 28, listening 26, writing 22, speaking … 12.
Kevin: Ouch. Okay, that’s your whole problem right there.
You: Yeah, I know. I froze. The first question I just sat there and said nothing.
Kevin: That’s really common. How much speaking practice have you actually done out loud?
You: Out loud? Honestly … almost none. I read the questions and planned answers in my head.
Kevin: Right. So you’ve been training your reading, and then you showed up to a speaking test.
You: That’s a harsh way to put it, but yeah.
Kevin: Here’s what I’d do. Two things: a speaking class, and a partner outside class. Class alone won’t fix it.
You: Why not? Isn’t the class enough?
Kevin: In class you speak maybe six minutes total. The test is twenty. You need reps.
You: Okay, that makes sense. How long is the course?
Kevin: Eight weeks, twice a week, two hours each. And you get two full mock tests.
You: And the mock tests — are those under real conditions? Timed and everything?
Kevin: Timed, recorded, scored the same day. If it’s not timed, it’s not a mock test.
You: Good. One more thing — how do you handle the fee? Is it all upfront?
Kevin: Half now, half at week four. And if you withdraw before week two, you get most of it back.
You: Can I get that in writing?
Kevin: Smart question. Yes — it’s on the back of the form.

Teacher Kevin, I want to improve my English level. | Teacher 不能当称呼;English level 是中式搭配 | Kevin, I need to get my speaking up. |
My oral English is very poor. | 英文里几乎不说 oral English | My speaking score is the problem. |
I want to reach 100 points. | 托福说 score,不说 points | I need a 100. / I need to hit 100. |
I recite the template every time. | 背模板是事实,但英文里说 memorize | I memorize templates, and it still comes out flat. |
How much money is the class? | 太直接,也没有 unit | What's the course fee? |
Please give me a discount. | 培训机构基本没有砍价空间 | Is there a payment plan? |
别说 28 points in reading,累赘。
2. I froze
3. reps
来自健身的 repetitions,美国人在学习场景也常说:You need reps(你需要练量),I need more reps on speaking(我口语得加大练习量)。
Can I get that in writing? What's the refund policy?
Kayla(同校同学,也在备考,口语 24,愿意当搭档) You(第一次约人练口语,不知道流程)
Kayla: Okay, so how do you wanna do this? Forty minutes, and we switch?
You: Sure. I’ve never done this before, so you tell me what to do.
Kayla: No problem. Rule one: we time it. The real test doesn’t give you extra seconds.
You: Right. Timed.
计时。
Kayla: I’ll ask a question, you get fifteen seconds to think, forty-five to answer. I record it. Then we listen back.
You: Listen back? That’s the part I’m dreading.
Kayla: Everybody hates it. It’s also the only part that works.
You: Okay. Go ahead.
Kayla: Here’s your question. “Some students prefer to study alone. Others prefer to study in groups. Which do you prefer and why?”
You: Um — I prefer … study in group. Because, uh, when I study alone I feel sleepy. And also, group can make me focus. That’s my answer.
Kayla: Okay. Stop. Let’s listen.
You: Oh no. That’s how I sound?
Kayla: That’s how everybody sounds the first time. But hear that? Four “um"s in forty seconds.
You: I didn’t even notice.
Kayla: Nobody does. That’s why we record.
You: So what do I do about it? Just … stop saying um?
Kayla: You can’t just stop. You replace it. Use a short pause instead. Silence is fine.
You: Silence feels worse than “um.”
Kayla: I know. But silence doesn’t cost you points. Filler does, if there’s too much of it.
You: Okay. Second problem — I said “study in group,” not “study in a group.”
第二个问题——我说的是"study in group",不是"study in a group"。
Kayla: Nice catch. Articles. Chinese doesn’t have them, so they’re the last thing to come.
You: And my answer was like ten seconds. Is that a problem?
Kayla: Big problem. The test wants a full forty-five. You need a structure: opinion, two reasons, one example.
You: Okay. Can we do it again? Same question.
Kayla: That’s the right instinct. Go.
You: So — I’d rather study in a group, for two reasons. First, I lose focus on my own. Second, explaining things out loud is how I find out what I don’t actually know. Last week I …
Kayla: Keep going — you’ve got twenty seconds left. Don’t stop.
|---|---|---|
| How do you wanna do this?
| You tell me what to do.
| Rule one: we time it. | time it 当动词用 |
| That’s the part I’m dreading.
| Everybody hates it. It’s also the only part that works. |
| That’s how I sound? |
| Nobody does. That’s why we record. |
| You replace it, you don’t just stop. |
| Nice catch. |
| Can we do it again? Same question. |
study in group 少了个 a,I went to library 少了个 the。
Mr. Reyes(培训班的托福写作与口语老师,教了十几年) You(刚拿到第二次模考成绩,写作 22 没动)
Mr. Reyes: Okay, I looked at your mock. Reading and listening are fine. Talk to me about writing.
You: Same as last time. 22. Nothing moved.
Mr. Reyes: Read me your first sentence from the independent essay.
💬 Reyes
You: “With the development of society, more and more people pay attention to this issue.”
Mr. Reyes: Stop. How many times have you written that sentence?
💬 Reyes
You: I mean … a lot.
Mr. Reyes: And how many times do you think I’ve read it?
💬 Reyes
You: A few thousand?
Mr. Reyes: Try more. Here’s the thing — that sentence says nothing. It’s a noise you make before your essay starts.
You: So what do I put there instead?
Mr. Reyes: Your answer. Directly. “I disagree with the proposal, and I’ll give two reasons.” Done.
You: That feels too simple. Won’t the rater think it’s too short?
Mr. Reyes: The rater counts development, not decoration. Where did you lose points — do you know?
Mr. Reyes: Then let’s find out. Read your first body paragraph out loud.
You: “Firstly, studying abroad can improve our ability. Secondly, it can broaden our horizons. Thirdly …”
Mr. Reyes: Three reasons, zero examples. That’s the 22.
You: But isn’t three reasons better than one?
Mr. Reyes: No. One reason with a real example beats three reasons with none. Every time.
You: Okay. So how do I write an example that isn’t made up?
Mr. Reyes: Use real things. Your roommate. Your cousin. Your own semester. Specific names, specific numbers.
You: Got it. Can I rewrite this one tonight and send it to you?
Mr. Reyes: Yes — and don’t send me a new essay. Send me the same essay, rewritten. Compare them.
You: Why the same one?
Mr. Reyes: Because a new essay lets you hide. The old one doesn’t.
You: Fair. And the speaking — same fix?
Mr. Reyes: Same principle. Stop decorating. Answer the question, then explain with one real thing.
You: Okay. Last thing — am I gonna make it to 100 by November?
Mr. Reyes: Your reading and listening are already there. Fix the two productive skills and you’re close.
You: “Close” is not a yes.
Mr. Reyes: I don’t do yeses. I do plans. Nine more essays before the test.

With the development of society, more and more people … | 评分人见过上万遍的套话开头,零信息 | I disagree with the proposal, and I'll give two reasons. |
Firstly … Secondly … Thirdly … | 三段式排比但每段都没展开 | The strongest argument is that … For example, … |
It can broaden our horizons. | 空泛表达,评分人眼里等于没写 | My cousin's semester in Ohio changed what she wanted to study. |
Our ability will be improved. | 滥用被动,且 ability 太笼统 | I learned to argue with a professor without apologizing. |
Every coin has two sides. | 英文里没人这么写作文 | Both sides have a point, but one matters more here. |
This is a very controversial topic. I think the rule does more harm than good. |
1. development
With the development of society 美国写作教学里管这叫 filler(填充物)。
my cousin who studied in Ohio for one semester and switched from pre-med to sociology 是例子;many students improve their ability abroad 是不是例子。
5. I don't do yeses. I do plans.
听到这种回答别失望——Nine more essays before the test 比 You'll definitely make it 有用得多。
Mr. Reyes(老师,桌上摊着一张日历) You(距离考试 32 天,想把计划推倒重来)
Mr. Reyes: Thirty-two days. So — what do you want to change?
💬 Reyes
You: Everything. My plan isn’t working. I’m doing four hours a day and nothing’s moving.
Mr. Reyes: Show me what four hours looks like.
💬 Reyes
You: One hour reading practice, one hour listening, one hour writing, one hour… thinking about speaking.
Mr. Reyes: “Thinking about speaking.” Out loud or in your head?
💬 Reyes
You: In my head, mostly.
Mr. Reyes: Then you have three hours, not four. Cut the reading to twenty minutes.
You: Cut it? Reading’s my best section.
Mr. Reyes: Exactly. You’re polishing what already works because it feels good.
You: Ouch. Okay. So what does the new week look like?
Mr. Reyes: Speaking every single day, twenty minutes, recorded. Alternate: one day independent, one day integrated.
You: And writing?
Mr. Reyes: Three essays a week. Two of them rewrites. One brand new, timed.
You: That’s less writing than I’m doing now.
Mr. Reyes: More output, less staring. And one full mock a week, same time of day as your real test.
You: Same time of day? Why does that matter?
Mr. Reyes: Your test is at nine in the morning. If you always practice at night, you’re training a different brain.
You: That’s … actually a good point. What about vocabulary?
Mr. Reyes: Twenty words a day, from your own mistakes. Not a list somebody sold you.
You: Okay. And if I bomb the mock next week?
Mr. Reyes: Then we look at why, and we don’t change the whole plan over one bad day.
You: Right. One more — should I register for a second test date now, as a backup?
Mr. Reyes: Yes. Seats fill up. Register for a date three weeks after your first one.
You: Even if I might not need it?
Mr. Reyes: You can cancel. You can’t create a seat that isn’t there.
You: Okay. Thanks. I’ll send you my first week’s recordings Sunday.
Mr. Reyes: Sunday night. And send the bad ones. Those are the useful ones.

| My plan isn’t working. |
| Nothing’s moving. |
| Show me what four hours looks like.
| You’re polishing what already works. |
| Cut the reading to twenty minutes. | cut … to = 削减到 |
| More output, less staring. |
| Same time of day as your real test. |
| Why does that matter? |
| Words from your own mistakes. |
| Send the bad ones. Those are the useful ones. |
You're polishing what already works because it feels good 值得抄下来。
5. bomb
I bombed the mock = 我模考砸了。 I tanked it、It went terribly。

2. I froze.
3. Ouch.
4. Fair.
