委员会给出的结论通常是三类:pass(直接通过)、pass with revisions(改完通过)、major revisions(大改后再看)。
That's outside what I measured, but here's how I'd think about it.
Dr. Osei(导师,带四个研究生,说话直接,喜欢用白板) You(硕士第二年,要开始写毕业论文)
Dr. Osei: Okay — you’re supposed to leave here today with a topic. What have you got?
You: I want to study how social media affects political polarization.
Dr. Osei: That’s not a thesis. That’s a field.
💬 Osei
You: I know it’s big. But I thought I should start big and then narrow.
Dr. Osei: Wrong order. Start with what you can measure, then see what question it answers.
You: Okay. So what can I measure? I have survey data from two hundred students on campus.
Dr. Osei: Two hundred students at one campus. What question can that answer honestly?
You: Something narrower. Like … whether people who get their news mainly from social media report more extreme views than people who don’t?
Dr. Osei: Better. And what’s the problem with that?
💬 Osei
You: Correlation. I can’t say social media causes it.
Dr. Osei: Right. So what’s your language going to be?
💬 Osei
You: “Is associated with.” Not “causes.”
Dr. Osei: Good. Write that on the board. That’s the difference between a thesis and a tweet.
You: Okay. Should I add a second research question?
Dr. Osei: Do you have data for a second question?
💬 Osei
You: Not really. I have one survey and one semester.
Dr. Osei: Then one question. A thesis with one answered question beats a thesis with three half-answered ones.
Dr. Osei: For a master’s, forty to sixty pages. Not counting references.
💬 Osei
Dr. Osei: Nobody’s ever been failed for being short. Plenty have been failed for padding.
You: Okay. Who else should be on my committee?
Dr. Osei: You need two more. One should be someone who will push back on your method.
You: Someone who disagrees with me?
Dr. Osei: Someone who will ask the questions I won’t think to ask. That’s worth more than agreement.
Dr. Osei: Dr. Weiss in the methods group. She’s tough, and she’s fair. Ask her in person, not by email.
Dr. Osei: Because she gets forty emails a day and remembers faces. Also bring a one-page summary.
You: One page. Got it. What should be on it?
Dr. Osei: Question, data, method, timeline. Four headings. If you can’t fit it on one page, the project’s not ready.
You: Okay. I’ll have it by Friday.
Dr. Osei: Friday’s fine. And bring the draft to our Tuesday meetings — every week, even if it’s bad.
Dr. Osei: Especially if it’s two paragraphs. That’s when I can still help.

My research direction is social media. | direction 是中式说法,且太空 | My question is whether heavy social media use is associated with more extreme views. |
I want to study a very meaningful topic. | meaningful 不是学术标准 | I have data that can address this question. |
My thesis will prove that … | prove 太强,相关性研究不能 prove | My thesis asks whether X is associated with Y. |
Can you give me a topic? | 导师不会替你定题 | Here's what I have — can you tell me if it's narrow enough? |
I will try my best to finish it. | 承诺没有信息量 | I'll bring the one-page summary Friday. |
I need more time to think about the direction. | 拖延信号,导师最怕 | I'll start with the survey data and narrow from there. |
Start with what you can measure, then see what question it answers ——
问卷调查、观察数据不能推出因果,所以论文里一律写 is associated with、correlates with、is linked to。
Someone who will ask the questions I won't think to ask ——
Even if it's bad ——
Dr. Osei(导师,手里是你交的 22 页,批注是红色的) You(交稿后第三天,心里没底)
Dr. Osei: I read it. Sit down. First — how long did this take you?
💬 Osei
You: Three weeks. Mostly nights and weekends.
Dr. Osei: Okay. And how much of it do you think survives?
💬 Osei
You: Honestly? Maybe half.
Dr. Osei: More than I expected. Page one — you spend two pages explaining why the topic matters. Cut it to half a page.
Dr. Osei: The people reading this already agree the topic matters. They want your question.
You: Fair. So where should the question appear?
Dr. Osei: Page one, by the end of the first page. Not page four.
💬 Osei
You: Okay. What else?
Dr. Osei: The literature review. You’ve summarized eleven papers. You haven’t said what’s missing.
Dr. Osei: The gap should be on page five, not page nine. A reader should know what hole you’re filling before they read twenty studies.
You: Okay, I can move that up. What about the method section?
Dr. Osei: That’s the strongest part. You describe the sampling clearly. Keep it.
💬 Osei
Dr. Osei: Interesting to write and clear to read are different things. Methods should be boring.
You: That’s good to hear. Now the hard part — is there anything that’s actually wrong?
Dr. Osei: Yes. Page fourteen. You say the survey was “representative of the student body.”
Dr. Osei: Of the students who answered. Two hundred out of eighteen thousand. Who answers surveys? People with opinions.
You: So I should say “of respondents.”
Dr. Osei: And add a sentence about who’s probably missing. That sentence will save you at the defense.
You: I’ll add it. Can I ask why you marked this whole paragraph with a question mark?
Dr. Osei: Because I don’t know what claim you’re making. Read it out loud.
💬 Osei
You: “There are many factors that influence political views, including family, education, and media exposure.”
Dr. Osei: Do you disagree with that sentence?
💬 Osei
You: No. It’s obviously true.
Dr. Osei: Then it’s doing no work. Cut it or make it specific.
💬 Osei
You: Noted. One more — how do I handle the fact that my results are weak?
Dr. Osei: You report them. Weak results with a good design are still results. And you already know what you’d do differently?
Dr. Osei: Put that in the limitations. Two paragraphs. Don’t hide it — the committee will find it anyway.
You: Right. When do you need the next version?
Dr. Osei: Two weeks. And send me the revised introduction alone first. If the intro’s wrong, everything after it is wrong.

My thesis has some shortcomings, please give me your guidance. | 中式客套,且没指出具体问题 | I'm not sure the introduction gets to the question fast enough. |
I wrote this part with great effort. | 努力不是学术标准 | This section took three weeks — is the structure right? |

I will revise it completely. | 全盘答应但不具体 | I'll cut the intro to one page and move the gap to page five. |
The people reading this already agree the topic matters ——
Methods should be boring. ——
Two hundred out of eighteen thousand 正确写法是 of respondents(在受访者中),并主动写一段说明谁可能没被覆盖。 That sentence will save you at the defense
There are many factors that influence political views —— 没有人会反对,所以它不推进任何论证。
Dr. Osei(导师,掐着表听你试讲) Hana(同门,博士第三年,来旁听并提问) You(答辩前一周,第一次完整讲一遍)
Dr. Osei: Okay, go. Full run. Twenty minutes, and I’m timing you.
You: Okay. So, um — thank you all for coming. Today I’ll present my thesis on …
Dr. Osei: Stop. You’re on slide twenty-two and you’ve just finished the methods.
💬 Osei
Dr. Osei: You have twenty minutes. Do the math.
💬 Osei
Dr. Osei: Nothing is all important. What’s the one thing you want them to remember?
You: That social media use is associated with more extreme views, but the effect is smaller than people assume.
Dr. Osei: Then that’s the sentence that gets the most time. Everything else supports it or goes.
You: Okay. What do I cut first?
Dr. Osei: The background. You spent four minutes explaining polarization. The committee knows.
💬 Osei
Dr. Osei: Two slides. One for what’s known, one for the gap. Nobody wants eleven.
Hana: Can I jump in? I have a question about the slides themselves.
Hana: Slide nine has a table with four columns and about thirty numbers. Nobody can read that from the back of the room.
Hana: Then say the number that matters and put the full table in the appendix. Or in the thesis.
Dr. Osei: That’s the right answer. One number per slide, ideally.
💬 Osei
You: Okay, that’s a big rebuild. Anything else before I do it?
Hana: Your font size. It’s about eighteen. Go to twenty-four, minimum.
Hana: It looks huge on your laptop. It looks normal on a projector.
Dr. Osei: Now the harder part. Let’s do questions. Hana, you start.
Hana: Okay. Your sample is two hundred students at one university. How do you know this isn’t just your campus?
You: Um. Well, we sampled across … okay, honestly, I don’t know that it isn’t.
Hana: Good. Don’t invent a defense you don’t have.
Dr. Osei: But “I don’t know” isn’t the end of the answer. What comes after it?
You: “I can’t generalize beyond this campus. What I can say is that within this sample, the pattern holds, and here’s why I think it’s worth testing elsewhere.”
Dr. Osei: That’s the answer. Acknowledge, bound it, propose the next step.
💬 Osei
You: Acknowledge, bound, propose. Got it.
Hana: One more. What if someone asks about a method you didn’t use?
Hana: Or anything you’ve read about but never run.
You: Then I say I didn’t use it, and say why. “That design needs a cutoff I don’t have.”
Dr. Osei: Yes. Reasons for choices are always safe. Pretending you know a method is not.
Dr. Osei: Tomorrow at ten. And cut the slides tonight, not tomorrow morning.

Full run. Twenty minutes, and I'm timing you. (We need to move to questions),非常难看。
先写出一句 the one thing you want them to remember,然后每一张幻灯片只回答一个问题:它怎么支持这句话?
Acknowledge, bound it, propose the next step. ——
That's outside what I measured. - 划界:
I can't generalize beyond this campus. -
It's worth testing with a broader sample.
Don't invent a defense you don't have.
Dr. Osei(委员会主席,你的导师) Dr. Weiss(第二读者,方法组,问题很硬) You(刚讲完 22 分钟,进入提问环节)
Dr. Osei: Thank you. We’ll take questions now. Dr. Weiss?
Dr. Weiss: Thanks. I enjoyed the presentation. I want to push on the causal language.
Dr. Weiss: On slide fourteen you said social media use “leads to” more extreme views. Then on slide sixteen you said you can’t establish causation. Which is it?
You: That’s a fair catch. It should be “is associated with” throughout. Slide fourteen is a wording error, not a claim.
Dr. Weiss: Okay. So let me ask the harder version. Suppose you had panel data — same people, three waves. What would you do differently?
You: I haven’t run that analysis, so let me reason out loud rather than pretend.
Dr. Weiss: Please.
💬 Weiss
You: With three waves I could look at whether a change in media use precedes a change in views, within the same person. That would rule out some of the stable differences between people. It wouldn’t rule out everything — a third factor could still move both.
Dr. Weiss: And what’s the name of the model you’d use?
💬 Weiss
You: I don’t have the name. It’s a fixed-effects specification — I know what it does, not what it’s called.
Dr. Weiss: I’d rather have that answer than a wrong name. Dr. Osei?
Dr. Osei: Two quick ones. First, why this campus?
💬 Osei
You: Access. I could get a response rate above forty percent here, and I couldn’t anywhere else.
Dr. Osei: Second. If you started over tomorrow, what would you change?
💬 Osei
You: I’d ask about media use and views at two points in time, four weeks apart. Same respondents. It would cost me nothing and answer a better question.
Dr. Osei: Anyone else? Yes, in the back.
💬 Osei
Student: Hi. Did you control for how much time people spend online overall, or only social media?
You: Only social media. Total screen time wasn’t in the survey. That’s a real limitation, and it’s on page forty-one.
Dr. Weiss: One more from me. Your effect size is small. Why should anyone care?
You: Because small and consistent is different from small and random. Across four models the direction never flipped. And if the effect is small but affects almost everyone, the population-level result isn’t small.
Dr. Weiss: That’s a good answer. I have no more questions.
💬 Weiss
Dr. Osei: Okay. We’re going to step out for a few minutes. You can wait here.
💬 Osei
Dr. Osei: Come on back in. Congratulations — you passed.
💬 Osei
You: Oh wow. Thank you.
Dr. Osei: With revisions. Minor ones. Dr. Weiss will walk you through them.
Dr. Weiss: Three things. Fix the causal wording everywhere, add the panel-data point to the future work, and cut the paragraph on page twenty that you already know is padding.
You: All three I can do. How long do I have?
Dr. Weiss: Two weeks. Send me the revised chapters, not the whole thing.
💬 Weiss
You: Understood. Thank you both — that was harder than I expected, in a good way.
Dr. Osei: Everyone says that. Go get some sleep.
💬 Osei

That's a fair catch. ——
I don't have the name. It's a fixed-effects specification — I know what it does, not what it's called. —— Weiss 那句 I'd rather have that answer than a wrong name
small and consistent≠small and random - 总体影响:效应小但影响所有人,群体层面就不小
Pass with revisions
Dr. Osei(导师,看了你改完的第三章) You(为了保险,把第三章几乎重写了)
Dr. Osei: Okay. I read the revised chapter. What did you do to it?
You: I rewrote most of it. About eighty percent.
Dr. Osei: Why? Weiss asked for three specific changes.
You: I didn’t want to miss anything. If she saw a problem with one paragraph, maybe the whole chapter had the same problem.
Dr. Osei: That’s the instinct that makes people miss their deadlines. Let’s see what you actually changed.
You: The causal wording, the future work paragraph, and I cut page twenty.
Dr. Osei: Those are the three. And the rest of the rewriting?
💬 Osei
Dr. Osei: Read me page six, second paragraph. The new version.
💬 Osei
You: “It is possible that individuals who exhibit a greater propensity for engagement with social media platforms may also demonstrate a tendency toward more polarized positions.”
Dr. Osei: What did the old version say?
💬 Osei
You: “People who use social media more may hold more extreme views.”
Dr. Osei: Which one is better?
💬 Osei
You: Honestly, the old one. But the new one sounds more academic.
Dr. Osei: It sounds less clear. That’s all it does. Put the old sentence back.
Dr. Osei: Safe from what? Your job is to be understood.
💬 Osei
You: Fair. So how much should I change in the last two chapters?
Dr. Osei: Only what Weiss asked for. She listed three things for a reason.
You: What if I find another problem while I’m in there?
Dr. Osei: Fix it if it’s a factual or citation error. Leave it if it’s style. Note it and move on.
You: And if I think a comment is wrong?
Dr. Osei: Then you say so in the response memo, with a reason. Weiss respects that more than silent compliance.
You: Okay. There’s a response memo too?
Dr. Osei: One page. Three comments, three responses, and where each change is. That’s it.
Dr. Osei: They do. One-inch margins, twelve-point, page numbers, and the signature page has to be the exact template.
You: Exact template. Where do I get it?
Dr. Osei: Graduate school website. Download it now, not the night before.
You: Noted. And the deadline?
Dr. Osei: Friday after next, five p.m., uploaded. Not emailed. Uploaded.
Dr. Osei: Yes. And put the old page-six sentence back before you do.
You: Doing it now. Thanks, Dr. Osei.

The format is not important as long as the content is good. | 格式不过审,论文不通过 | Where's the exact template for the signature page? |
Only what Weiss asked for —— 大范围重写会带来三个后果:引入新错误、拖过截止日期、让委员会要重读一遍。
Individuals who exhibit a greater propensity for engagement… Your job is to be understood
It's a style preference, and here's why I kept the original ——
Uploaded. Not emailed.

1. Do the math.
2. That's a fair catch.
3. Which is it?
4. Congratulations — you passed.
Thank you.
