What's the joke? I don't get it.
Tyler(美国室友) You(来了三周,状态很差)
Tyler: Hey. You’re up late.
You: Yeah. Couldn’t sleep.
Tyler: Everything okay?
You: Honestly? Not really.
Tyler: You wanna talk, or you want to be left alone? Either’s fine.
You: I don’t know. Maybe talk.
Tyler: Cool. I’ll make tea. I’m told it helps.
You: …I think I’m homesick. It’s been three weeks and it’s not getting better.
Tyler: Three weeks is the worst part, for what it’s worth. That’s when the newness wears off.
You: Everyone keeps saying it gets better. It doesn’t feel like it.
Tyler: Yeah, I hate when people say that too. What’s the hardest part?
You: The food. And I can’t tell when people are joking.
Tyler: The joke thing is real. We joke constantly and it’s not always obvious.
You: So I laugh anyway and hope.
Tyler: That’s exhausting. Just ask. Seriously, say “I can’t tell if that’s a joke.”
You: Won’t that kill the joke?
Tyler: No, it makes it better. Then I get to explain it and feel funny.
You: Ha. Okay. That actually helps.
Tyler: And the food thing — do you cook?
You: A little. But I don’t know where to buy anything.
Tyler: There’s an Asian grocery on Fifth. Twenty minutes on the bus. I’ll show you Saturday.
You: You’d do that?
Tyler: Yeah, man. It’s an excuse to get out of the house.
You: Thanks. Really.
真的。
Tyler: Go to bed. We’ll figure the rest out.

I'm fine. Not really. |
I am very miss my family. | 语法错 | I really miss my family. |
You don't understand my feeling. | 对抗性 | It doesn't feel like it. |
Sorry to bother you with my problem. |
Please teach me American jokes. | 太笼统 | I can't tell when people are joking. |
1. homesick
2. You wanna talk, or be left alone?
Emma(同班同学,说话快) Jay(另一个同学) You
Emma: So I told him, and he just — okay, you had to be there.
Jay: Ha! Classic Kevin.
You: Sorry — I don’t get it. What’s the joke?
Emma: Oh! Sorry. Kevin is this guy who always says the wrong thing at the worst time.
Jay: He once congratulated a guy on his divorce.
You: Oh no.
Emma: The guy wasn’t divorced. He was engaged.
You: Okay, now that’s funny.
Emma: Right? You have to know Kevin to get it. That’s most of our jokes.
You: So I should just ask when I don’t get it?
Emma: Please do. It’s way better than fake laughing.
Jay: She’s right. You can always tell when someone’s fake laughing.
You: I was worried it’d be awkward.
Emma: It’s only awkward if you never ask and then you’re just sitting there.
You: Fair. Okay, I’ll do that from now on.
Emma: Oh, that reminds me — are you coming Saturday? A few of us are hiking.
You: I didn’t know about it. Nobody told me.
Emma: Jay, did you not invite him?
Jay: I thought you did!
Emma: Wei, that’s on us. Come. Saturday at nine, we leave from the parking lot.
You: I’d love to. Should I bring anything?
Emma: Water and snacks. We share food, so bring something to share.
You: I’ll bring fruit. And I’ll ask if I don’t get a joke.
Emma: Ha! That’s the deal.

I don't get it — what's the joke? |
Please explain, I don't understand English humor. | 把问题归结为"英语”,太大 | I don't know Kevin — what's the backstory? |
What did you say? Repeat please. | 太生硬 | Sorry, I missed that. |
American jokes are strange. | 像在评判 | That's most of our jokes — you have to know Kevin.
I didn't know about it. I'd love to come. |
You had to be there、You have to know Kevin to get it —— 这类笑话不是英语问题,是信息差。
You can always tell when someone's fake laughing
I didn't know about it
Tyler(美国室友) You(吃了三周食堂,受不了了)
You: Tyler, can I ask you something about the kitchen?
Tyler: Sure.
You: If I cook, do I need to worry about smells bothering you?
Tyler: Why would it bother me?
You: The food I cook has… strong smells. Garlic, fish sauce, some spices.
Tyler: Dude, my last roommate microwaved fish at midnight. You’re fine.
You: Okay, good. But I’d still open the window.
Tyler: That’s more than he ever did.
You: Also — do we share food, or is everything separate?
Tyler: Separate, mostly. But if you cook a lot, I’ll pay for ingredients.
You: Why would you pay?
Tyler: Because I’ll eat it. I’m not going to pretend I won’t.
You: Ha. Okay. Deal.
行。成交。
Tyler: What are you making?
You: I don’t know yet. I need to find the grocery store first.
Tyler: Fifth Street, like I said. You want to go now?
You: Now works. What do I need to know about shopping here?
Tyler: Prices don’t include tax. And produce here is expensive in winter.
You: Tax at the register?
Tyler: Yeah. So that eight-dollar thing is actually eight seventy.
You: Good to know. Anything else?
Tyler: Get a store card. It’s free and it actually saves money.
You: A store card — like a membership?
Tyler: Yeah, they scan it at checkout. Some stuff is half off with it.
You: I’ll get one. And Tyler — thanks for Saturday. I’ve been kind of down.
Tyler: I know. That’s why I offered.

Can I cook? I am afraid you don't like. | 语法错且模糊 | If I cook, will the smells bother you? |
I will buy my own food, don't touch. | 太防备 | Do we share food, or separate? |
Why so expensive? | 抱怨,且没信息 | Is produce always this expensive in winter? |
The price is wrong, it says eight. | 收银台前争论 | Prices don't include tax here, right? |
Sorry, I am very sad these days. | 过度沉重,且不对应 | I've been kind of down. |
2. store card
I'll pay for ingredients
Helen(国际学生顾问) You(第四个月,状态越来越差)
Helen: Come in, sit down. What can I help you with?
You: I’m not sure this is the right office. I’m having a hard time.
Helen: You’re in the right place. Tell me what’s going on.
You: I can’t focus on anything. I’m sleeping maybe four hours. And I’ve stopped going to my afternoon class.
Helen: How long has this been going on?
You: About five weeks. It got worse after midterms.
Helen: Have you talked to anyone about it? Friends, family?
You: My roommate a little. I didn’t want to worry my parents.
Helen: That’s very common. And it usually makes it harder, not easier.
You: So what do I do?
Helen: Two things. First, let’s get you to counseling. It’s free and it’s confidential.
You: Confidential how? Does the school tell my parents?
Helen: No. Nothing goes to your family or your department. The only exception is if you’re in danger.
You: Okay. That helps.
Helen: Second — the class you stopped going to. Let’s deal with it now, before it’s a bigger problem.
You: Can I still drop it?
Helen: The drop deadline passed. But there’s a medical withdrawal option for situations like this.
You: Would that show on my transcript?
Helen: It shows as a W. It doesn’t affect your GPA.
You: And my visa? If I drop a class, am I still full-time?
Helen: That’s exactly the right question to ask. Medical reductions can keep your status. I’ll handle that part.
You: Thank you. I didn’t know any of this existed.
Helen: Almost nobody does in their first year. That’s why I have this job.
You: I should have come earlier.
Helen: You came today. That’s the part that counts. Let me make some calls.

I want to quit the class. | 太绝对,没问选项 | What are my options for that class? |

Am I still full-time?
3. medical withdrawal(医疗退课)是真实存在的选项。
Don't hesitate to reach out
Nurse(校医院分诊护士) Doctor(校医院医生) Tyler(室友,陪你来的) You(发烧三天)
Nurse: What brings you in today?

You: I’ve had a fever for three days. Around a hundred and one.
Nurse: Got it. Any other symptoms?
You: Sore throat, and I’m really tired. No cough.
Nurse: Any allergies? Any medications?
You: No allergies. Just ibuprofen for the fever.
Nurse: Okay. Insurance card?
You: Here. It’s the student plan.
Nurse: Great, you’re covered here. The doctor will be in shortly.
Doctor: Hi, I’m Dr. Lin. Tell me what’s going on.
You: Fever for three days, sore throat, exhausted. It started Sunday night.
Doctor: Let me look at your throat. …Open wide. Yeah, that’s red. Any white patches?
You: I don’t know. I can’t see it.
Doctor: Fair. I see a little. I’m going to do a strep test. It takes five minutes.
Doctor: Positive for strep. That’s bacterial, so you need antibiotics.
You: Okay. How long until I feel better?
Doctor: Twenty-four hours after you start them you’re not contagious. Two or three days to feel normal.
You: Can I go to class tomorrow?
Doctor: Not tomorrow. Day after, if the fever’s gone.
You: I have a midterm Thursday.
Doctor: Then you need a doctor’s note. I’ll write one — take it to your professor.
You: Will they accept it?
Doctor: They have to. It’s from student health. Take it to the dean’s office too if you need an extension.
You: Thank you. I didn’t know I could get a note.
Doctor: Always ask. That’s what we’re here for.

You: Strep. Antibiotics. And a note for my professor.
Tyler: See? That was twenty minutes and you’re fixed.
You: I almost didn’t come. I was going to just sleep it off.
Tyler: Everyone does that. Then it gets worse.

| Any other symptoms? | | |
| Any allergies? Any medications? | | |
| Insurance card? | | |
| It’s the student plan. | | |

| Take it to your professor. | | |
| I was going to sleep it off. | sleep it off = 睡一觉就好了 |
3. 别硬扛(sleep it off)。
I was going to sleep it off
