Ms. Rivera(助学金办公室顾问,管本科生的奖学金) You(大二国际生,学费压力大,想找能申的钱)
Ms. Rivera: Next. What can I help you with?
💬 Rivera
You: Hi. I’m an international sophomore, and I want to know what I can actually apply for.
Ms. Rivera: Okay. Let me pull up your record. … Right. Are you on any aid right now?
You: Just a small merit award from my department. Two thousand a year.
Ms. Rivera: Okay. So the first thing you need to know: as an international student, you don’t qualify for federal aid.
You: I figured. So what’s left?
Ms. Rivera: Three buckets. Department scholarships, external scholarships, and on-campus jobs. That’s it.
You: Let’s start with department scholarships. How do I find them?
Ms. Rivera: Every department has a page. It’s usually buried, but it exists. Search the department name plus “scholarships.”
You: And external ones?
Ms. Rivera: That’s where the real money is, and it’s where most students never look. There’s a database on our site.
You: What kind of external scholarships are there? I don’t have anything special.
Ms. Rivera: You’d be surprised. There are ones for your major, your state, your parents’ employer, your language.
You: My parents’ employer is in China, though.
Ms. Rivera: Then cross that off. See — that’s why you come in and ask instead of guessing.
You: Fair. What about the application itself? How long do these take?
Ms. Rivera: Most want an essay, one or two recommendations, and your transcript. Budget four to six hours per application.
You: That’s a lot. How many should I do?
Ms. Rivera: Five, done well, beats twenty done badly. Small awards add up — two thousand here, three thousand there.
You: And on-campus jobs — do those count as aid?
Ms. Rivera: They’re wages, not aid. But they’re the most reliable money you’ll get. And you’re limited to twenty hours a week during the semester.
You: Twenty hours. Is that a hard rule?
Ms. Rivera: It’s a visa rule, not a school rule. Going over it puts your status at risk. Don’t.
You: Understood. Can I make an appointment to go through the database with someone?
Ms. Rivera: Yes, and bring your laptop. We’ll filter by deadline and by what you actually qualify for.
You: Thank you. One more — should I ask my professors about department awards?
Ms. Rivera: Yes. Some of them sit on the committees and they know what nobody applies for.
You: That’s a good tip. Thanks, Ms. Rivera.
Ms. Rivera: And apply early. Half these deadlines are in February and people find out in April. That’s too late.

Am I eligible?、Do I qualify for this?
They know what nobody applies for —— 有些奖项因为宣传少,申请人数极少。 Are there department awards I should know about?
Ms. Rivera(助学金办公室顾问,兼看奖学金文书) You(写第三稿,主题是"我家经济困难")
Ms. Rivera: I read it. First question — what’s this essay about?
You: About why I need the money. My dad’s business had a bad year.
Ms. Rivera: Okay. And who’s reading it?
💬 Rivera
You: The scholarship committee, I guess.
Ms. Rivera: Right. And what do they already know about you?
💬 Rivera
You: My GPA, my major… and that I’m applying for need-based aid?
Ms. Rivera: So they know you need money. What are you telling them that they don’t know?
You: … Nothing, really.
Ms. Rivera: Then it’s not an essay. It’s a form with paragraphs.
💬 Rivera
You: Ouch. What should it be about, then?
Ms. Rivera: What you’ll do with the degree, and what you’ve already done without the money.
You: So instead of explaining the problem, I show what I’ve managed anyway.
Ms. Rivera: Exactly. Last year one student wrote about running the math lab nine hours a week and taking eighteen credits. That’s evidence.
You: That’s a better angle. Can I ask something blunt?
Ms. Rivera: Blunt is fine.
💬 Rivera
You: Is it bad to mention that I’m international? Some scholarships say “US citizens only.”
Ms. Rivera: Read the eligibility rules first. If you qualify, your background is part of the story, not a liability.
You: Okay. And how personal should it get? My dad’s situation is not something I love writing about.
Ms. Rivera: Then don’t. You don’t owe anyone your family’s finances. One sentence of context is enough.
You: One sentence. That’s a relief.
Ms. Rivera: The rest should be forward-looking. What’s the plan, what’s the evidence, what’s the ask.
You: The ask — you mean state the amount?
Ms. Rivera: State what the award would cover. Books, fees, a semester of housing. Be specific.
You: Okay. And how long?
Ms. Rivera: Follow the prompt. If it says five hundred words, five hundred. Don’t pad to look serious.
You: Noted. Can I show you the next draft?
Ms. Rivera: Yes, but read it out loud first. If a sentence sounds like an excuse, cut it.
You: That’s a good test. Thanks.
Ms. Rivera: And apply to five of them, not one. One is a lottery ticket.

You don't owe anyone your family's finances. My family's circumstances changed last year
Don't pad to look serious. ——
One is a lottery ticket. ——
US citizens only、permanent residents、must demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA
Dr. Grant(系里管助教分配的教授) Priya(在读博士生,现任助教,参与面试) You(申请下学期的助教岗位)
Dr. Grant: Thanks for coming in. You applied for a TA position for the spring. Why?
You: Two reasons. I need the funding, and I want the teaching experience.
Dr. Grant: Good. People who pretend it’s only about teaching don’t fool anyone. What course?
You: Intro statistics. I took it, I TA’d informally for a friend’s study group, and I did well in it.
Dr. Grant: “Informally.” Say more about that.
💬 Grant
You: Four of us met twice a week for a semester. I ran the problem sessions. It was unpaid and unofficial.
Dr. Grant: How did you handle it when someone didn’t get it?
💬 Grant
You: I’d try a different example first. Usually the problem was the example, not the person.
Dr. Grant: Good answer. Priya, you want to ask about the practical side?
Priya: Yeah. Have you taught in English before?
You: Not formally. The study group was in English, but it was four people I knew.
Priya: Okay. Here’s the real question. You’ll have twenty students in a section, and half of them will be scared of statistics.
You: I know that feeling. I was one of them my first week.
Priya: What do you do on day one?
You: I’d give them something they can already do. A small problem, in pairs. So they’re not sitting there deciding they’re bad at it.
Priya: That’s better than what I did my first semester. Okay, another one — a student comes to office hours and says they’re failing. What’s your first move?
You: Ask what they’ve tried, and where it breaks. Not “do you study enough” — that makes people defensive.
Dr. Grant: Two things. First, there’s a spoken English test for international TAs. Have you taken it?
You: No. Do I need to?
Dr. Grant: If you’re leading a section, yes. It’s twenty minutes, next month, and it’s about clarity, not accent. Sign up this week — slots fill fast.
Dr. Grant: Second thing: hours.
You: Twenty hours a week, right?
Dr. Grant: Ten to fifteen for this position. You’ll lead two sections and hold three office hours.
You: And the compensation?
Dr. Grant: A stipend plus a partial tuition waiver. The exact numbers are in the contract. Read it before you sign.
You: I will. Last thing — is there training?
Dr. Grant: A two-day workshop before the semester. It’s required, and it’s actually useful.
You: Then I’ll be there. Thank you both.
Priya: Good luck with the test. And start your first section with something easy. I mean it.

I want to be a TA because I like teaching. | 假话,面试官听得出来 | I need the funding, and I want the teaching experience. |
My English is not good enough, but I will try. | 先给自己判刑 | I haven't taught formally, but I ran a study group in English last semester. |
I have no teaching experience. | 可以换成有说服力的相近经历 | I ran problem sessions for a four-person study group. |
I will teach students very patiently. | 形容词不是方法 | I'd start with a problem they can already solve. |
If students fail, it is their own problem. | 责任推给学生,面试直接挂 | I'd ask where the problem breaks down before assuming anything. |
Can you tell me the salary? | salary 用词不准 | What's the stipend, and does it include a tuition waiver? |
(I'd ask what they've tried 胜过 I'd be patient)。
People who pretend it's only about teaching don't fool anyone. ——
The exact numbers are in the contract. ——
Priya 那句 start your first section with something easy 是过来人的经验:第一节课让学生成功一次,他们后面才敢提问。
Ms. Tran(系里的助教与资助协调员,管合同和发放) You(第一次拿 assistantship,怕交不上房租)
You: Ms. Tran? I have a question about my assistantship. It’s probably a dumb one.
Ms. Tran: There are no dumb ones about money. Sit.
💬 Tran
You: When does the first payment come? My lease is due on the first.
Ms. Tran: Good question to ask now, not in September. When’s your contract start date?
You: August 16th.
Ms. Tran: So you’ll be on the payroll from the 16th. But the first paycheck usually lands the second or third week of September.
Ms. Tran: You’re not the first person to say that. There are two options. Which do you want first?
You: The faster one.
Ms. Tran: A short-term loan from the university. Interest-free, up to fifteen hundred, repaid from your paychecks.
You: Interest-free? What’s the catch?
Ms. Tran: You have to apply before the semester starts, and you have to be on a contract. You qualify.
You: Okay. And the second option?
Ms. Tran: Ask payroll to split the first payment. You get half on the first payday, half two weeks later. It doesn’t change the total.
Ms. Tran: Right. The loan solves the gap, the split smooths the rest of the year. Most people do both.
You: Then I’ll do both. How do I apply for the loan?
Ms. Tran: Form on the financial aid site. It needs a signature from your department — that’s me. Bring it here.
You: How long does approval take?
Ms. Tran: Two weeks if you do it in July. Four if you do it the week before classes.
💬 Tran
You: Then I’ll do it this week. What about taxes?
Ms. Tran: Your stipend is taxable. And if you’re on a visa, there may be a treaty that changes the withholding.
You: Where do I find out if the treaty applies to me?
Ms. Tran: Payroll office, not me. Ask them, and bring your visa documents.
You: Okay. And the tuition waiver — does that show up anywhere?
Ms. Tran: On your student account, usually a week after the contract starts. Check it — sometimes it’s applied late, and you don’t want a late fee.
You: So I should check my account even if I assume it’s handled.
Ms. Tran: Always check. That’s the whole lesson. Every semester, check.
💬 Tran
You: Noted. Last thing — if my hours go over, what happens?
Ms. Tran: You get paid for the contract hours. Going over means working for free, and it can hurt your visa status.
You: So track my own hours.
Ms. Tran: Every week. Don’t trust your memory in December.
💬 Tran

You'll be on the payroll from the 16th, but the first paycheck lands the second or third week of September ——
You get paid for the contract hours. Going over means working for free. ——
Ms. Rivera(助学金办公室顾问) You(收到拒信,想问反馈)
Ms. Rivera: Hey. You look like you got news.
💬 Rivera
You: I got the rejection for the Chen Foundation award. It was my first choice.
Ms. Rivera: I’m sorry. How many others did you apply to?
💬 Rivera
You: Four. Two are still open.
Ms. Rivera: Good. That’s why we do five, not one. Was there feedback in the letter?
You: No. It just says “we received many strong applications.”
Ms. Rivera: That’s the standard line. Do you want to ask for more?
💬 Rivera
You: Is that allowed? I don’t want to seem like a sore loser.
Ms. Rivera: It’s allowed, and it’s normal. But the way you ask matters a lot.
💬 Rivera
You: What’s the wrong way?
Ms. Rivera: “Why didn’t I win?” That puts them on the defensive, and they’ll send you the same standard line again.
You: And the right way?
Ms. Rivera: Ask what would make a future application stronger. You’re asking about next year, not about this decision.
You: That’s a different question. Okay. Should I email or call?
Ms. Rivera: Email. It gives them time, and it gives you a record. Keep it to four sentences.
You: Can I draft it and show you?
Ms. Rivera: Read it to me now. Go.
💬 Rivera
You: “Dear Ms. Chen, thank you for considering my application. I was not selected this year, and I’d like to apply again next cycle. Could you tell me what would make a stronger application? I’m happy to share more about my work if that’s useful.”
Ms. Rivera: That’s good. One change — drop the last sentence.
You: Why? I thought offering more information was helpful.
Ms. Rivera: It sounds like you’re asking them to reconsider. This letter is about next year. You can ask whether they’re able to share any reviewer comments, but don’t assume they will.
Ms. Rivera: You can ask if they’re able to share any. Don’t assume they will — many committees don’t give individual feedback.
You: Fair. And if they don’t answer at all?
Ms. Rivera: Then you move on, and you mention in next year’s application that you reapplied and what changed.
Ms. Rivera: Exactly. Committees notice persistence when it comes with new work.
You: Should I appeal the decision?
Ms. Rivera: Only if you have a specific reason — a missing document, an error on their side. Not because you disagree.
You: Okay. So no appeal. I’ll send the email tonight.
Ms. Rivera: Good. And spend tonight on the two applications still open instead of this one.
You: That’s the advice I needed. Thanks, Ms. Rivera.

|---|---|---|
Why did you reject me? | 质问语气,对方只会重复模板话术 | What would make a stronger application next cycle? |
I think the decision is unfair. | 没有依据的指控 | Could you share any reviewer comments, if that's possible? |
Please reconsider my application. | 奖学金评审一般不做个案复议 | I plan to reapply next year — any guidance would help. |
I am very sad and disappointed. |
Can you tell me who won? | 涉及他人隐私,问了很失礼 | Is there anything about my materials I could improve? |
I will never apply again. | 情绪化决定 | I'll apply again next cycle with two new projects. |
Ask what would make a future application stronger ——
Email. It gives them time, and it gives you a record. ——
Mention that you reapplied and what changed —— 第二次申请时,附上一句"自上次申请以来我完成了 X 和 Y",让委员会看到成长轨迹。
Spend tonight on the two applications still open ——

1. There are no dumb ones about money.
你回一句 Thanks — that helps.
2. What's the catch?
3. You qualify.
4. I can't float five weeks.
用这句说明困难,比说 I have no money 有效得多。
