Denise(图书馆学生工主管) You(大一/研一,想找校内工作)
Denise: Come on in. You’re here about the student assistant job?
You: Yes, I saw the posting on the job board. Is it still open?
Denise: It is. Sit down. I’m Denise, I manage the student workers.
You: Nice to meet you. I’m Wei.
Denise: So, first thing — what’s your availability?
You: I have classes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. So I’m free weekday afternoons.
Denise: Afternoons work. What about weekends?
You: Saturdays I could do, but I’d rather not do Sundays.
Denise: That’s fine. Most students don’t want Sundays. Can you commit to a full semester?
You: Yes. I’m here through the spring.
Denise: Good. Now — any experience with customer service?
You: Not professionally. But I’ve helped run a student club back home.
Denise: That counts. What did you do?
You: Sign-ups, answering questions, keeping the schedule.
Denise: Perfect. That’s basically this job. The desk is the first thing people see.
You: What would I actually be doing?
Denise: Check out books, help people find things, answer the phone, and handle the printer.
You: The printer sounds like the hard part.
Denise: Ha. You’re not wrong. It jams four times a day and everyone blames you.
You: I can handle that. I’m patient.
Denise: Good answer. Pay is fifteen fifty an hour, and you can work up to nineteen hours a week.
You: Nineteen hours — is that the limit?
Denise: For international students, yes. It’s a visa rule, not mine.
You: Got it. When can I start?
Denise: Can you do training Thursday at three?
You: I can. I’ll be there.

I have no experience, but I can learn. | 自我否定开场,浪费机会 | I ran sign-ups for a student club back home. |
I can work any time. | 太笼统,排班时反而不好安排 | I'm free weekday afternoons and Saturdays. |
How much salary? | 时薪工作说 pay 或 hourly rate | What's the hourly rate? |
I want to work 40 hours. | 国际学生超时违法 | What's the hour limit for international students? |
Sorry, my English is not good. | 过度自贬 | I'm comfortable answering phones. |
3. posting
Priya(老员工,带你) You(第一天) Patron(来问事的读者)
Priya: Okay, first day. Nothing here is hard, it’s just a lot.
You: That’s what Denise said. Where do I start?
Priya: The check-out system. Scan the card, then scan the book.
You: Card, then book. What if the card doesn’t scan?
Priya: Type the number under the barcode. And if that fails, ask for their student ID.
You: Got it. What about the phone?
Priya: Answer it by the third ring. Say the library name, then your name.
You: Like “University Library, this is Wei”?
Priya: Exactly. Then let them talk. Don’t guess what they need.
Patron: Hi, I’m looking for a book but I can’t find it on the shelf.
You: Sure. Do you have the call number?
Patron: I wrote it down. It’s QA seventy-six point seven three.
You: Let me check the system. …It says available, so it should be here.
Patron: I looked twice.
You: Let me come look with you. Sometimes it’s on the reshelving cart.
Patron: Oh, there it is. Thank you — I would have given up.
You: No problem. Have a good one.
Priya: Nice. You didn’t just point at the shelf.
You: Was that the right call?
Priya: It was. The rule here is walk them over if you’re not busy. People remember that.
You: Good to know. What if I am busy?
Priya: Then say “give me two minutes” and actually come back in two minutes.

| Let me check the system. | | |
| Give me two minutes. |
University Library, this is Wei 不要问 What do you want?,那听起来像不耐烦。
3. call number
Denise(主管) You(期末周,考试和排班撞了)
You: Denise, do you have a minute? I need to talk about my schedule.
Denise: Sure. What’s going on?
You: Finals are the week after next, and I’ve got two exams on my Wednesday shift.
Denise: Which Wednesday is that? The twelfth?
You: The twelfth, yeah. I’d need to either switch or come in later.
Denise: How much later?
You: My last exam ends at one. I could be here by two.
Denise: Your shift starts at noon. So you’d miss two hours.
You: Right. Is that a problem?
Denise: It’s not a problem if we cover it. Have you asked anyone to switch?
You: Not yet. I wanted to check with you first.
Denise: Good order. Ask Priya — she’s always looking for extra hours.
You: I’ll ask her today. And if she can’t?
Denise: Then come back to me and I’ll shuffle it. But I need to know by Friday.
You: Friday. Got it. And this is just for that one week.
Denise: I figured. Exam weeks are always like this. Just tell me early, that’s all I ask.
You: Understood. Thanks for being flexible.
Denise: Of course. And Wei — two weeks’ notice is the standard here. You gave me that, so we’re good.
You: I’ll keep that in mind for next time.

Sorry I can't come Wednesday. | 只说不能来,不给方案 | I've got exams — can I switch or come in at two? |
I have a problem, I cannot work. | 太生硬且不留余地 | I need to adjust my Wednesday shift. |
Can you change my schedule? | 把责任全推给主管 | I'll ask Priya to cover — is that okay? |
I will find someone, no problem. | 空承诺 | I'll ask Priya today and let you know by Friday. |
1. two weeks' notice
I need to adjust my shift 后面必须跟 I'll ask Priya 或 I can come at two。
Denise(主管) Payroll(薪资办公室工作人员,电话里) You
You: Denise, I think there’s an issue with my paycheck. It’s short.
Denise: Short how much?
You: About six hours. I worked nineteen but it shows thirteen.
Denise: Did you submit your timesheet on time?
You: I did. Sunday night, like we’re supposed to.
Denise: Let me look. …Yeah, only thirteen hours got approved. Did you clock in for the Saturday shift?
You: I did. But the system was down, so I wrote it on the paper log.
Denise: That’s the problem. Paper doesn’t get entered automatically.
You: So I need to enter it manually?
Denise: You need to tell payroll. It’s not automatic, and it’s not going to fix itself.
You: Who do I call?
Denise: Payroll. I’ll give you the number. Tell them the date and the hours.
You: Okay. Will I still get paid for it?
Denise: Yeah, next cycle. It’s not lost, it’s just delayed.
Payroll: Payroll, this is Marcus.
You: Hi, I’m a student worker in the library. I’m missing six hours on my last paycheck.
Payroll: What’s your student ID?
You: It’s 91360.
Payroll: Got it. And what date are the missing hours?
You: Saturday the ninth. Four to ten. The system was down so I used the paper log.
Payroll: Okay. I see the log entry. I’ll add it to the next cycle.
You: Thanks. Do I need to do anything else?
Payroll: Nope. You’re all set. It’ll show up in two weeks.
You: Great. Thanks for your help.

|---|---|---|
You paid me wrong. | 像指责 | I think there's an issue with my paycheck. |
Where is my money? | 太冲 | I'm missing six hours on my last check. |
Can you pay me now? | 流程上做不到 | Will it be on the next cycle? |
I don't know why, please check. | 信息太少,对方无法查 | I worked the ninth, four to ten, and used the paper log. |
1. timesheet
the ninth, four to ten, paper log ——日期、时段、异常原因,一次说清,对方一次就能查到。
Priya(同事,比你早来一年) Sam(另一个学生工,爱聊天) You
Priya: Hey, are you okay taking the desk alone for ten minutes? I need to run something upstairs.
You: Yeah, go ahead.
Priya: Thanks. If the phone rings, just take a message.
(Priya 走后)
Sam: So how are you liking it here?
You: It’s good. Quiet, and the pay’s decent for sitting down.
Sam: That’s the whole appeal. Nobody’s timing you on anything.
You: Except the printer.
Sam: Ha! Yeah. Has it eaten a dollar of yours yet?
You: Twice.
Sam: You know you can get that back, right? There’s a refund form.
You: No, I didn’t know that.
Sam: I’ll show you where they are. It’s like two dollars a month for me.
You: Two dollars a month?
Sam: I print a lot of sheet music.
(Priya 回来)
Priya: Thanks for covering. Anything happen?
You: One phone call. Someone asking about study room bookings.
Priya: Did you book it for them?
You: I took the number and said you’d call back. I didn’t want to touch the booking system yet.
Priya: Good call. That system’s the one thing I’d wait on.
Sam: She locked a room for a whole semester once.
Priya: It was one week. And I fixed it.
Sam: You fixed it after the professor complained.
Priya: …Also true.
You: Okay, I’m never touching the booking system.

Can you cover the desk for ten minutes?
I didn't want to touch the booking system yet
3. good call
同事之间高频使用,比 You are right 更自然。
