美国大学的图书馆不只是自习室,它是一整套系统:借还书、course reserves(教授指定的教材短期出借)、database(文献数据库)、interlibrary loan(馆际互借)、research consultation(学科馆员一对一咨询)、group study room(小组讨论室预约)。
还有一条比罚款严重得多的:plagiarism(抄袭)。
Librarian(流通台馆员,戴眼镜,很耐心) You(大一,手里拿着课程大纲来找指定教材)
You: Hi. Um — I’m looking for a textbook. It’s for my psych class.
Librarian: Sure. Do you have the title or the course number?
You: I have the course number. PSY 101. My professor said it’s on reserve?
Librarian: Oh, course reserves. Those are behind the desk. What’s the professor’s name?
You: Bennett. Professor Bennett.
💬 你: Bennett。Bennett 教授。
Librarian: Okay, I’ve got three things listed under Bennett. Which one do you need?
You: The one by Schacter. That’s the main one.
Librarian: Got it. Here’s the catch — reserves check out for two hours, and you can’t take them out of the building.
You: Two hours only? So I can’t take it home?
Librarian: Right. That’s the point — it’s so everyone in the class can use it. If you want your own copy, there’s a used one for sale in the bookstore.
You: Okay. Can I check it out now?
Librarian: Sure. I need your student ID.
You: Here. Oh — and can I book one of the group study rooms too?
Librarian: You can, but those you book online. Third floor rooms are first come, first served; the ones on four you reserve.
You: What’s the difference?
Librarian: Four’s the quiet floor, so the rooms are for small groups. Three is louder — that’s where people go to talk.
You: So if my group is four people and we’re gonna be talking a lot, which one?
Librarian: Four’s fine, you’re in a room with a door. Just don’t be loud in the hallway.
You: Got it. How long can we book it for?
Librarian: Two hours, and you can extend it if nobody’s waiting. Same two-hour thing.
You: Okay. And is there a whiteboard in there?
Librarian: Some of them. The listing says which ones. Anything else?
You: No, that’s it. Thank you.

I want to borrow this book. | want 太直接,服务台里显得生硬 | I'd like to check this out. |
Can I take this book home? | 能懂,但 reserve 的书重点在时长 | How long can I check this out for? |
How much money is the fine? | 中式问法,缺语境 | What's the fine if it's late? |
I will return it tomorrow. | 承诺没人问你要 | Can I renew it online? |
Please give me the book. | 命令句 | Could you grab that for me? |
Is there a place to study quietly? | 能懂但不地道 | Which floor is the quiet floor? |
1. course reserves
2. Here's the catch
The catch is …、One caveat —
4. check out 是借书,check in 是还书。
I'd like to check this out(我想借这本)、Where do I check this in?(在哪儿还?)。
Dana(学科馆员,负责心理学和社会学方向,有办公室) You(大二,第一次写需要五篇文献的论文)
Dana: Hi, you must be Wei. Come in. So — what are you working on?
You: It’s a paper for psych. I need at least five sources and I honestly don’t know where to start.
Dana: Okay, that’s what I’m here for. What’s the paper about?
You: Social norms. Specifically why people follow rules that nobody enforces.
Dana: Ooh, that’s a good topic. Let me pull up the databases. Have you used PsycINFO?
You: No. I’ve just been using Google Scholar.
Dana: That’s fine to start with, but it’ll miss a lot. PsycINFO is the one for this field.
You: Okay. So do I just type in “social norms”?
Dana: You can, but you’ll get ten thousand results. What are you actually asking?
You: Whether people follow norms because of guilt, or because of what other people think.
Dana: Great. So those are two different search terms. “Guilt” and “social approval.” Try them separately first.
You: Okay, that already helps. How do I know which ones are good sources?
Dana: Filter to peer-reviewed, and check the date. Anything older than about fifteen years, I’d only use if it’s a classic.
You: What’s peer-reviewed?
Dana: Other experts read it before it got published. In PsycINFO there’s a checkbox for it.
You: Got it. And what if the article isn’t available? I hit a paywall last time.
Dana: Then don’t pay for it. Request it through interlibrary loan, or email me and I’ll get it.
You: Really? How long does that take?
Dana: Two to five days. So don’t do it the night before.
You: Noted. Can I ask one more thing — how do I cite these?
Dana: Most of the databases will generate the citation for you. But check it. They’re wrong maybe a third of the time.
You: A third? That’s a lot.
Dana: That’s why we have citation help on Tuesdays. Bring your list and we’ll go through it.
You: I’ll be there. Thank you — this was way more useful than I expected.
Dana: That’s the job. Good luck with it.

|---|---|---|
Can you help me find some papers? | 太笼统,馆员没法动手 | I need sources on guilt versus social approval. |
I want five sources about social norms. | 数量不是需求,主题才是 | My paper's about why people follow unenforced norms. |
This article costs money, what should I do? | paywall 有免费的正规解法 | Can I get this through interlibrary loan? |
Is Google Scholar okay? | 问法太笼统,答案取决于学科 | Does PsycINFO cover this better than Google Scholar? |
Please write the citation for me. | 把活全推给馆员 | How do I check whether this citation is right? |
I am a beginner, I don't know anything. | 自我贬低,且没提供信息 | I haven't used a database before — where do I start? |
1. Research consultation
Librarian(流通台馆员) You(借的两本书都过了期,还不知道会有什么后果)
You: Hi. I think I have some late books.
Librarian: Let me see your ID. … Okay, two books, six days late. That’s three dollars.
You: Three dollars. Okay, that’s not bad. Can I just pay it now?
Librarian: You can. But before you do — do you still need the books?
You: Yeah, I’m still using both of them.
Librarian: Then renew them first. Otherwise you’ll be back here Wednesday with the same problem.
You: Oh. Can I renew them right now?
Librarian: You can, but not if someone’s requested them. Let me check. … Okay, no holds. You’re good for another three weeks.
You: Great. And the three dollars?
Librarian: It stays on your account. You can pay it now or at the end of the semester.
You: Is there a deadline on it?
Librarian: You can’t register for next semester’s classes if you owe more than twenty-five dollars. So under that, you’re fine.
You: Good to know. What if I’d forgotten about these for a month?
Librarian: Then it adds up. And at some point we send it to the bursar’s office and it becomes a real bill.
You: Okay. I’ll pay it now. Can I use a card?
Librarian: Sure. … And here’s your receipt. Do you want me to set up reminder emails?
You: You can do that?
Librarian: Yeah, it sends three days before. Most people don’t know about it.
You: Please. That would save me a lot of money.
Librarian: Done. And one more thing — those two books, are they for the same class?
You: Yeah, both for PSY 101.
Librarian: Check if your professor put them on reserve. You could’ve read them here for free.
You: … I did not know that. Okay. Thank you.

|---|---|---|
Sorry, I forgot to return the book. | 道歉不是重点,处理才是 | I think I have some late books — can you check? |
How can I avoid the fine? | 听起来像想赖掉 | Can I renew them? |
I will pay the money tomorrow. | 中式直译 | Can I pay it now, or does it go on my account? |
Is the fine expensive? | 中式问法 | How much is it? |
Please don't freeze my account. | 说反了——账户在欠费前不会被冻结 | At what point does it affect registration? |
Nobody told me the book was due. | 推责任,美国场景里没用 | Can you set up reminder emails for me? |
3. You're good 是"你没问题了"。
You're good for another three weeks You're all set.
Can you set up reminder emails?
Student(隔壁桌的女生,在 quiet floor 复习,忍了十分钟) You(跟同学在四楼小声讨论,没意识到声音传出去了)
Student: Hey — sorry. You guys are on the quiet floor.
You: Oh — are we being loud? I’m sorry, I didn’t realize.
Student: It’s just that it carries. I can hear every word.
You: Got it. We’ll keep it down.
Student: Thanks. Sorry to be that person.
You: No, you’re not. You’re right. (to your friend) Let’s move downstairs.
Friend: Yeah, my bad. I forgot where we were.
You: Okay, this is better. So — where were we?
Friend: The intro. You were saying it’s too general.
You: Right. “Social norms are important in society” — that could be about anything.
Friend: Okay, so what would a good first sentence look like?
You: Something specific. Like: “Most people stop at red lights at 2am on an empty street.”
Friend: Oh, that’s good. That’s a real thing people do.
You: Right, and then the question is why. That’s the whole paper.
Friend: Okay, I can work with that. Do you want to grab coffee before we keep going?
You: Yeah, but not here. There’s a thing on the first floor.
Friend: Is that allowed? Bringing coffee in?
You: In the lobby, yeah. Not up here. They’ll stop you at the stairs.
Friend: Good to know. Okay, let’s go.
|---|---|---|
| You guys are on the quiet floor. |
| Are we being loud? |
| I didn’t realize. |
| It’s just that it carries. |
| I can hear every word. |
| We’ll keep it down.
| Sorry to be that person. |
| No, you’re not. You’re right.
| My bad. |
| Where were we?
| I can work with that.
| Is that allowed? |
You're right, we'll move 或者 We'll keep it down
Sorry to be that person(抱歉当那个来管的人)就是这种心理的体现。你回一句 No, you're right,对方的尴尬就消了,两边都体面。
3. My bad
I'm sorry — that was on me.
Dana(学科馆员,周二下午做 citation help) You(论文已经交了一稿,助教批注说引用格式有问题,而且提到了 plagiarism)
You: Hi. I’m here for the citation thing?
Dana: Citation help, yep. Sit down. What are you working on?
You: So — this is kind of serious. My TA wrote “possible plagiarism” on my draft.
Dana: Okay. Take a breath. Do you know what part she flagged?
You: This paragraph. I paraphrased an article, and I put the citation at the end of the paragraph.
Dana: And she says that’s not enough.
You: Right. But I did cite it. I don’t understand what’s wrong.
Dana: So here’s the thing. If you paraphrase, the citation has to be right where the paraphrase starts — not at the end.
You: Why does that matter? The reader knows it’s from that article.
Dana: Do they? If your paragraph has three sentences of your own analysis, the reader can’t tell where the article ends and you begin.
You: Oh. Hmm. I hadn’t thought about it that way.
Dana: There’s a second thing. Did you change the words, or just some of them?
You: I changed some of them. Like I kept “reinforcement” and “conditioned response” because they’re technical terms.
Dana: Keeping technical terms is fine. But if the sentence structure is the same as the original, that’s still too close.
You: So I need to rewrite it more.
Dana: You do. Read the original, close it, then write what you remember. That usually fixes it.
You: Okay. And should I talk to my TA, or just fix it?
Dana: Both. Fix it, then go tell her. If you show up with the fix, it reads very differently than if you show up with an excuse.
You: That makes sense. Do I need to worry about this going on my record?
Dana: On a draft? No. That’s why professors have drafts. It’s the final version that gets reported.
You: Okay. That’s a relief. Can we go through the rest of my citations?
Dana: That’s what we’re here for. Pull up your reference list.

2. flag
The legal team flagged that clause(法务标出了那一条)。
Fix it, then go tell her

是因为它们不在本项目的校对音标表 ipa_table.json 里。
1. library
