Your English is so good! |
correct me as I go),还是记下来最后一起说(write it down and tell me at the end),还是只纠影响理解的错误。
Same time next week?比Let's do it again sometime有效一百倍。
I want you to correct me,对方才会开始纠。
Emma(大二美国学生,学中文两年,想找语伴) You(刚到美国一学期的交换生) Host(活动组织者,负责配对)
Host: Okay, so Emma’s learning Mandarin and you’re working on English. You two are a match. Grab a table.
Emma: Hi! I’m Emma. Okay, this is gonna be awkward for like five minutes and then it’s fine.
(laughs) You: I hope so. I’m Wei.
Emma: So — how long have you been here?
You: About four months. I came in August.
Emma: Oh, your English is really good already.
You: Thanks. I can talk about school stuff, but when people talk fast I lose it.
Emma: That’s so fair. My Chinese is way worse. I’ve been at it for two years and I still can’t order food.
(laughs) You: That’s the first thing you learn, though.
Emma: I know! I just point at the menu and hope.
You: Okay, can I say something about how we do this? I did this once before and it didn’t work.
Emma: Yeah, go ahead.
You: We talked in Chinese the whole time because my partner wanted to practice. So I got nothing out of it.
Emma: Oh no. Okay, so how do we not do that?
You: What if we split it? Thirty minutes English, thirty minutes Chinese.
Emma: And English first, right? Otherwise we’ll never get to it.
You: Exactly. You read my mind.
Emma: Okay, I’m in. Um — can I ask you something else? Should I correct you when you make a mistake?
You: Please. But can you write it down instead of stopping me? If you interrupt me I forget what I was saying.
Emma: Yeah, that’s actually better for me too. I’ll keep a note on my phone.
You: And I’ll do the same for your Chinese. Only the big stuff, not every tone.
Emma: Oh, thank God. Tones are the worst.
You: One more thing — same time next week? Because “sometime” never happens.
(laughs) Emma: Yeah, you’re right. Same time next week. I’ll put it in my calendar right now.

Your English is really good I want you to correct me,对方才会开始纠。
3. write it down instead of stopping me 是最实用的纠错方式。
4. "Sometime" never happens
Let's do it again sometime 要约就约具体时间:Same time next week? 工作上同理:Let's touch base 不如 Let's talk Thursday at 2。
Emma(语伴,拿着手机记错误) You(说英语的半小时,正在讲自己打工的经历)
Emma: Okay, your thirty minutes. What do you wanna talk about?
You: I don’t know. Maybe my job? I started working at the library.
Emma: Oh nice. What do you do there?
You: I am shelving books and sometimes I am helping students find things.
(typing) Emma: Okay, keep going.
You: It is a quiet job. I like it because I can study when there is no students.
Emma: Okay, stop. I’ve got four things. You ready?
You: Yeah. Hit me.
Emma: So, one — for a job you have now, you’d say “I shelve books,” not “I am shelving books.”
💬 艾玛: 第一——说你现在的工作,要说"I shelve books",不是"I am shelving books"。
You: Oh. Because it’s every day, not right now?
Emma: Exactly. Habit, not action. Two — “when there are no students,” not “when there is no students.”
第二——是"when there are no students",不是"there is no students"。
You: There are no students. Right, plural.
💬 你: There are no students。
Emma: Three — this one’s small. “It’s a quiet job,” not “It is.” We almost never say the full thing.
“It’s a quiet job”,不是"It is"。
You: So contractions. I know that but when I slow down I lose them.
Emma: That’s normal. Say it again the fast way.
You: It’s a quiet job, and I like it.
Emma: Yeah, that sounds like a person. Okay, four — “hit me” was perfect, by the way. Where’d you learn that?
You: TV. I watch a lot of TV with subtitles.
Emma: That’s why. Okay — your turn. My Chinese is gonna be so bad.
(laughs) You: It’s fine. Let’s start with tones.
Emma: Oh no.
You: You’re saying “mā” for everything. Mother, horse, scold — same sound, three tones.
Emma: And if I get it wrong I’m calling someone’s mother a horse.
You: Yes. Exactly. So — watch my hand.

Shoot.、Go for it.、Lay it on me.
I am shelving books 和 I shelve books 的差别是习惯 vs. 此刻,这是中国学生最高频的错误之一。 I work at the library(我的工作)vs. I'm working at the library today(今天在那边干活)。
I am / it is / I would
聊文化差异:你们为什么老问"how are you"
Emma(语伴,中国待过一个暑假) You(在美国待了半年,攒了一堆想问的)
Emma: So my professor said something today and I have no idea if he was serious.
You: What’d he say?
Emma: I asked if I could turn something in late, and he said “I’ll think about it.”
I’ll think about it"(我考虑一下)。
(laughs) You: That’s a no.
Emma: Wait, really?
You: Yeah. In Chinese we do the same thing. If someone says “我考虑一下,” they mean no.
Emma: Huh. So it’s not just us.
You: No. Can I ask you something in return?
Emma: Yeah, go ahead.
You: Why do Americans say “how are you” and then walk away? In China, if you ask that, you want an answer.
💬 你: 美国人为什么说"how are you"然后就走开了?
Emma: Oh, that’s a good one. It’s not a question, it’s more like … a nod. Like making eye contact.
You: So what am I supposed to say?
Emma: “Good, how are you?” That’s it. If you actually answer, people get confused.
💬 艾玛: “Good, how are you?”
You: That’s what I did my first week. I told someone about my cold.
(laughs) Emma: Oh no. What did they do?
You: They said “oh, that’s too bad” and walked away faster.
Emma: Yeah, that tracks. Okay, my turn. Something I noticed in China — people asked how much my apartment cost.
You: Yeah, that’s normal here? No wait, that’s not normal here.
Emma: Not normal here! My roommate was so offended.
You: Okay, that’s actually the same for me now. After six months here I feel weird asking that too.
Emma: You’re becoming one of us.
You: Don’t say that. I still can’t do small talk.
Emma: Nobody can. We just do it badly and keep going.

| I have no idea if he was serious. |
| That’s a no. | 那是不行。
| So it’s not just us.
| Can I ask you something in return? |
| Why do Americans say … and then walk away? |
| It’s not a question, it’s more like a nod. |
| If you actually answer, people get confused. |
| That’s what I did my first week. |
| That tracks. |

| Nobody can. We just do it badly and keep going. |
1. That tracks
Makes sense.、That checks out.
2. How are you?
标准回答是 Good, how are you? We should hang out sometime
Something I noticed here is …、Is it true that Americans …?、How do you guys handle …?
4. I'll think about it 在美国也常常是"不行"。
I'll think about it、Let me get back to you、We'll see Let me get back to you by Friday 是真考虑;Let's see 基本是没戏。
Emma(语伴,第三个月,两个人已经熟了) You(下周有两篇论文要交)
Emma: Okay, so we’re out of time. Same time next week?
You: Actually — next week’s bad for me. I’ve got two papers due Friday.
Emma: Oh, that’s fine. Do you wanna skip it, or do a shorter one?
You: What if we do thirty minutes instead of an hour? Just to keep the habit.
Emma: Yeah, I like that better than skipping. Once I skip I never come back.
You: Same. Okay, so Thursday, half an hour.
Emma: Do you wanna move it later? Like seven instead of six?
You: Seven’s better. That gives me the whole afternoon.
Emma: Seven it is. Um — can I ask you something?
You: Yeah.
Emma: If I have to cancel sometime, is that okay? I don’t wanna be that person who flakes.
You: Yeah, of course. Just tell me as early as you can. Same for me.
Emma: Like a day before?
You: A day before is great. Same day is fine if you’re sick. What I hate is just not showing up.
Emma: Agreed. I’ll text you either way.
You: And if I have to cancel, I’ll do the same.
Emma: Okay, deal. Oh — one more thing. Do you wanna get food after next time? Not for practice, just to hang out.
You: Oh. Like friends?
(laughs) Emma: Yeah, like friends. We’ve been doing this for two months.
You: Yeah. I’d like that. I keep thinking of you as my tutor.
Emma: See, that’s the problem. Same time Thursday?
You: Seven. Done.

1. Flake
I don't wanna be that person who flakes Just tell me as early as you can.
Next week's bad for me 后面接 What if we do thirty minutes instead?,这就从"我要退出"变成了"我们调整一下"。
3. Seven it is 是"那就七点"。
(Not for practice, just to hang out),因为在美国文化里,长期的定期接触就是友谊。
Emma(现在已经是朋友,住在校外,养了只猫) You(不再严格分时间了,但还是会互相纠错)
Emma: Okay, read me your conclusion again. Slower this time.
You: “In conclusion, the data suggest that … that social norms are maintained by …”
Emma: By what?
You: I don’t know how to say it. Like, people expect other people to follow them?
Emma: “By mutual expectation.” Is that what you mean?
You: Yeah. Mutual. Okay, that’s the word.
Mutual。
Emma: Also — “in conclusion” is fine, but your professor might prefer “in short.”
You: Noted. Do you want me to look at your Chinese essay?
Emma: Yeah, but it’s bad. I wrote it in like forty minutes.
(reading) You: It’s not bad. The grammar is fine. It’s just … nobody talks like this.
Emma: What do you mean?
You: You wrote “此外,我认为” three times. In real Chinese you’d just say “而且我觉得.”
Emma: Oh. My textbook taught me the formal one.
You: Textbooks always do. Same as my English. I said “in addition” for a year before anyone told me.
(laughs) Emma: That’s so comforting.
You: Okay, I’m done with yours. Do you want food?
Emma: I already ordered. It’s coming in twenty.
You: Oh. You didn’t ask me.
Emma: You always get the same thing. I got you the same thing.
(laughs) You: Okay, fair. That’s very friend of you.
Emma: Can I ask you something? Do you feel like your English got better?
You: Honestly? Yes. But not because of the practice. Because we stopped being polite.
Emma: What do you mean?
You: In the first month I said “sorry” before every sentence. Now I just talk.
Emma: Yeah. That’s the whole thing, honestly.

I don't know how to say it,不要沉默。
How do you say … in English?、It's on the tip of my tongue.
Would you mind if I corrected you?,熟了之后直接 Slower this time、That's not a word。
Sorry, my English is not good → Okay, wait, let me think
You always get the same thing. I got you the same thing.

1. Same time next week?
3. That tracks 的重音在 tracks。
4. I don't know how to say it 里 don’t 要清楚。
I know how to say it,对方就以为你不需要帮忙了。
