Marcus Webb(职业中心职业顾问,之前做过招聘,说话很快) You(大三,第一次拿简历给人看)
Marcus: Okay, let me see it. … Hmm. How many pages is this?
You: Two. I have a lot of experience.
Marcus: You’re a junior. You don’t have two pages of experience. You have one page and some padding.
You: Ouch. What’s the padding?
Marcus: This section. “Responsibilities included.” What does that mean?
You: It means I did those things.
Marcus: It means you were in the room. Tell me what you actually did.
You: I ran the social media for the student club. I grew the following from two hundred to about nine hundred.
Marcus: Read that back. Which version goes on the resume?
You: The one with the numbers.
Marcus: Right. “Grew following from 200 to 900 in one semester.” That’s a line. Now do that for every bullet.
You: What if there are no numbers? Some of my stuff doesn’t have numbers.
Marcus: Then use scope. How many people, how often, how long, how much budget.
You: Okay. Should I include a photo?
Marcus: No. No photo, no age, no marital status, no ID number. US employers don’t want any of that.
You: Why not? In China, resumes always have a photo.
Marcus: Because it can be used to discriminate, so they avoid it entirely. Including it makes you look like you didn’t research the norm.
You: Got it. What about my GPA?
那 GPA 呢?
Marcus: Include it if it’s a 3.5 or above. Below that, leave it off.
You: Isn’t leaving it off suspicious?
Marcus: Nobody assumes anything. They assume you had other things going on. And you can always put your major GPA.
You: Okay. Last thing — I’m an international student. Should I mention that?
Marcus: Not on the resume. But you need to know your work authorization, because they’ll ask.
You: Ask when?
Marcus: Usually in the first screening call. Have the answer ready and don’t apologize for it.
You: What’s the answer?
Marcus: Depends on your situation. That’s a question for the international student office, not me. Go ask them this week.
You: I will. Can I bring the revised version back tomorrow?
Marcus: Walk-in hours are two to four. Bring the one-pager and the job posting you’re targeting.

Grew following from 200 to 900 比 Responsible for social media 强一百倍。
Not on the resume. But you need to know your work authorization. —— 招聘流程中会问到身份,你要能一句话说清自己现在的状态和将来的可能(比如 I'm on an F-1 visa and I'd use CPT for a summer internship)。
5. Walk-in hours
Recruiter(某公司校园招聘专员,面前摆着一摞宣传册) You(第一次参加招聘会,手里拿着五份简历)
Recruiter: Hi! What’s your name?
You: Wei Li. I’m a junior in statistics. Here’s my resume.
Recruiter: Thanks. So — what are you looking for this summer?
You: A data analyst internship. I saw you have a program in the Chicago office.
Recruiter: We do. Have you done any SQL?
You: Yes, for a research project. I pulled and cleaned about three years of survey data.
Recruiter: Good. And what’s your timeline? Are you graduating in May?
You: Next May, so I’d be looking for a summer internship and then a full-time offer.
Recruiter: Okay. One question I have to ask — are you authorized to work in the US?
You: I’m on an F-1 visa. For a summer internship I’d use CPT through my school, and after graduation I’d be eligible for OPT.
Recruiter: Okay. Some of our internships require long-term authorization, but the Chicago one doesn’t.
You: That’s good to hear. So what’s the next step?
Recruiter: Apply online tonight — the posting number is on the card. And put my name in the referral field.
You: Will that help?
Recruiter: It gets your file read by a person instead of a filter. So yes.
You: Then I’ll do it tonight. Can I ask what you look for in a resume for this role?
Recruiter: Evidence that you’ve touched real data. Class projects are fine if you can say what you did.
You: Good — mine is a class project plus a research lab.
Recruiter: Perfect. Last thing — how many companies are you talking to today?
You: Maybe six. I have about twenty minutes.
Recruiter: Then here’s my advice. Don’t hand your resume to forty companies. Pick eight and actually talk to them.
Recruiter: I’ll remember three students from today. Two of them I talked to for more than two minutes. Is that worth more than handing out forty resumes? Yes.
You: Okay. That changes my plan. Thank you.
Recruiter: One more tip — email me tomorrow. Short. “We spoke at the fair, I applied, posting 4471.” That’s it.
Recruiter: And spell my name right. You’d be surprised how many don’t.

|---|---|---|
Nice to meet you, I hope to get a chance. | 客套开场,浪费宝贵时间 | I'm a junior in statistics — here's my resume. |
I can do anything, I am a fast learner. | 没有具体技能 | I've pulled and cleaned three years of survey data in SQL. |
Do you sponsor visa? | 问法太硬,应该用 work authorization 的说法 | Are you able to consider candidates on CPT for the summer? |
I will work very hard for your company. | 承诺无法验证 | Here's a project where I did X and the result was Y. |
Please remember me. | 请求记住,不如给记忆点 | I applied tonight — posting 4471, and I'll email you tomorrow. |
Sorry for my English. |
I'll remember three students from today. Two of them I talked to for more than two minutes. ——
I'm on an F-1 visa. For a summer internship I'd use CPT through my school, and after graduation I'd be eligible for OPT.
It gets your file read by a person instead of a filter. Would you be comfortable referring me?
We spoke at the fair, I applied, posting 4471. ——
Marcus Webb(职业中心的模拟面试官,之前做过十年招聘) You(第一次模拟面试,申请数据分析实习)
Marcus: This is a recorded mock interview. Twenty minutes. Ready?
You: Ready.
Marcus: Tell me about a project you’re proud of.
You: So we did a project on survey data. We cleaned the data, and we built a model, and we found that the results were significant.
Marcus: Stop. How many times did you say “we”?
You: I don’t know … four times?
Marcus: Six. I counted. In an interview, “we” tells me nothing about you.
You: But it was a team project. I don’t want to take credit for other people’s work.
Marcus: Good instinct, wrong execution. Say what you did and name what you didn’t.
You: So … “I built the cleaning pipeline. My teammate did the modeling.”
Marcus: That’s it. Now say the whole answer again.
You: I worked on a survey project with two teammates. I built the cleaning pipeline and ran the validation checks. My teammate did the modeling, and I don’t want to overstate my part in that.
Marcus: Much better. Now — what was the hardest part?
You: Convincing my teammate that we had to drop a variable. He’d already built the model with it.
Marcus: How did you do that?
You: I showed him the missing-data pattern. Once he saw that forty percent of those values were missing, he agreed.
Marcus: Good. That’s a behavioral answer. Situation, action, result.
Marcus: Same idea. You don’t have to say the letters out loud. Just have the shape.
You: Noted. Can I ask how I did on the first answer before we keep going?
Marcus: Structure was there, ownership wasn’t. Now, next one. Why this company?
You: Because I want to work in data and you’re a big company.
Marcus: That answer gets you nowhere. Give me something they’d only hear from you.
You: Your team published a post about how you handle messy survey data. I read it, and it’s the same problem I worked on.
Marcus: Better. Now the last one — do you have any questions for us?
You: Yes. What does someone in this role do in their first three months?
Marcus: Good question. Ask two more like that. And never say you have no questions.
Marcus: Then it tells them you didn’t look. Ask about the team, the work, or the first ninety days.
You: Okay. Can we run the whole thing again next week?
Marcus: Yes, and bring a different story each time. You need five ready, not one.

We completed this project together. | 说"我们"等于没说你自己 | I built the pipeline; my teammate did the modeling. |
I am a team player. |
I will learn quickly and adapt. | 空泛承诺 | I taught myself SQL in six weeks for this project. |
I have no questions, thank you. | 放弃最后的加分机会 | What does the first three months look like? |
Your company is very famous. | 人人都知道的理由不算理由 | Your team published a post about messy survey data — that's my project. |
I am nervous so my answer is not good. | 把紧张说出来没有帮助 | Let me take that in two parts. |
We did this, we built that —— 面试官无法判断你的贡献。 I built the cleaning pipeline. My teammate did the modeling.
Because you're a big company
Never say you have no questions. ——
What does someone in this role do in their first three months? What makes someone successful on this team? What's the biggest challenge the team is facing right now?
Ms. Chen(国际学生办公室的顾问,负责工作许可) You(拿到实习 offer,需要办 CPT,时间很紧)
You: Hi. I got a summer internship offer, and I need to know about CPT.
Ms. Chen: Congrats. When does it start?
💬 Chen
You: June 3rd. And they want an answer on the offer by Friday.
Ms. Chen: Okay. The CPT itself we can process. But there’s a requirement you need to check first.
You: What’s that?
Ms. Chen: The internship has to be related to your major, and most students register it for credit.
You: Related how? It’s a data analyst role and I’m a statistics major.
Ms. Chen: Then that’s fine. If it were, say, a marketing internship, we’d have a conversation.
You: Got it. What do I need from the employer?
Ms. Chen: An offer letter on company letterhead, with the start and end dates, the address, and your job title. And a signed letter from your academic advisor approving the credit.
You: How long does the whole thing take?
Ms. Chen: Two weeks if everything’s in order. Longer in April and May, because everyone applies at once.
You: Then I should start now.
Ms. Chen: Today. And here’s the thing people get wrong: you cannot start working before the CPT is approved. Not one day.
You: Even if it’s unpaid?
Ms. Chen: Even unpaid. Working without authorization is a status violation, and it doesn’t matter that you weren’t paid.
You: Okay, that’s serious. What about after graduation?
Ms. Chen: That’s OPT, and it’s a different application. You can apply up to ninety days before your program ends.
You: And it takes how long?
Ms. Chen: Processing has been running three to five months. So apply on the first day you’re eligible.
You: Three to five months? That’s longer than I thought.
Ms. Chen: It used to be faster. Plan for the slow version.
💬 Chen
You: What about the job itself? Does it have to be related to my major too?
Ms. Chen: For OPT, yes — it has to be related to your major. And you report your employment to us, every job, within ten days.
Ms. Chen: Every one, even a short one. People forget, and then they find out at the wrong moment.
You: Okay. Where do I start today?
Ms. Chen: Bring me the offer letter and the advisor form. I’ll give you the checklist. And bring your I-20.
You: I’ll be back this afternoon.
Ms. Chen: One more thing. Don’t sign anything from the employer that mentions full-time work after graduation. That’s a separate conversation.
You: Good to know. Thank you — this was worth the wait in line.

| CPT | OPT | |
|---|---|---|
You cannot start working before the CPT is approved. Not one day.
Don't sign anything from the employer that mentions full-time work after graduation. ——
Recruiter(公司招聘专员,电话里) You(拿到实习 offer,想知道细节)
Recruiter: Hi Wei — calling with good news. We’d like to offer you the summer internship.
You: Oh wow. Thank you. Can I ask a few questions before I say yes?
Recruiter: Of course. Take your time — you have until Friday.
You: First one — what are the dates exactly?
Recruiter: June 3rd to August 9th. Ten weeks.
You: Is there any flexibility on the start date? I need to sort out my work authorization.
Recruiter: We can move it by a week if you need. After that it gets complicated.
Recruiter: It’s paid, hourly. You’ll get the rate in the written offer, along with the housing stipend.
Recruiter: Wait — did I say housing stipend?
You: You did. Is that confirmed?
Recruiter: It’s in the standard package for interns who relocate. It’ll be in the letter.
You: Good. Third — what does the first week look like?
Recruiter: Orientation, laptop setup, and you meet your team. You won’t do real work until week two.
You: That’s helpful. Can I ask about conversion to full-time? Is that common?
Recruiter: About half our interns get a return offer. It depends on the team and on the year.
You: Okay. And if I accept, when do I need to send the CPT paperwork?
Recruiter: HR will email you a packet. They’ll ask for your authorization documents in week one.
You: I’ll have it ready. One more — can I get the offer in writing before I accept?
Recruiter: Yes, that’s standard. I’ll send it today. Read it, and ask me anything.
You: Thank you. I’ll reply by Thursday.
Recruiter: Sounds good. And congratulations again.
You: Thanks. Can I ask one last thing that might sound odd?
Recruiter: Go ahead.
You: Is there anything I should do between now and June to be ready?
Recruiter: Learn the tools your team uses. I’ll tell you which ones. That’s the best thing you can do.
You: Then I’ll do that. Thank you for the call.

|---|---|---|
Thank you! I accept! When can I start? Can I ask a few questions before I say yes? |
How much money will I get? | 太直接,也不完整 | Is the internship paid, and is there a housing stipend? |
Can I arrive one month later? I have a trip. | 要求太随意,缺乏理由 | Is there flexibility on the start date? I need to finalize my CPT. |
I want to become a full-time employee. | 太早表态,且不是问题 | Is conversion to full-time common for interns? |
I trust you, no need for a written offer. | 口头信息随时会变 | Could you send the written offer? I'd like to review it. |
Please tell me everything about the job. | 太笼统,对方不知从何说起 | What does the first week look like? |
Can I ask a few questions before I say yes?
Is that confirmed? / Can I get the offer in writing?
Is there any flexibility on the start date? I need to sort out my work authorization.
About half our interns get a return offer ——
Learn the tools your team uses. ——

1. Ouch.
一个音节,声音放低,接着问 What's the padding? 就行。
2. Ready.
说 I'm ready, yes, okay 会显得紧张。
3. Not one day.
4. Go ahead.
