How do you wanna split this up? |
Did you talk to them?(你跟他谈过了吗)。
Jake(同组同学,美国人,爱聊天、怕写作) You(国际生,组里另外两个人今天没来) Priya(第三个成员,中途加入的线上会议)
Jake: Okay, so we’ve got like three weeks. Where do you wanna start?
You: I don’t know — probably just split it up?
Jake: Yeah, for sure. Let’s figure out what the whole thing even needs first, though.
You: Right. So — the prompt says a ten-page report plus a presentation. Do we need a lit review?
Jake: I think we do. Priya’s on Zoom — Priya, you there?
Priya: Yeah, I’m here. Sorry, I was on mute. I read the rubric — it says “review at least five sources.”
Jake: Five sources. Okay, that’s a chunk of work by itself.
You: So how do you wanna split this up? Two people on research, one on writing?
Priya: I’d rather not do all the writing, honestly. I’m a slow writer.
Jake: Same. Can we each take a section and then one person stitches it together?
You: That works. I can stitch it — I’m okay with editing.
Priya: Oh, that’s a huge help. I’ll do the sources.
Jake: And I’ll take the survey part. I can get people to fill it out.
You: Okay, so let’s say: Priya does sources, Jake does the survey, and I write the intro and stitch. But then who writes the body?
Priya: Hmm. What if we each write the section that matches our part?
Jake: Yeah, that’s cleaner. I’ll write the survey findings.
You: And I’ll do the intro and the conclusion.
Priya: So we all write, and you edit. I like it.
You: Okay. Can we put this in a doc so we’re not relying on memory?
Jake: Yeah, I’ll make a Google Doc right now. What’s your email?
You: I’ll put it in the chat. And can we put dates on each section?
Jake: Smart. Let’s say rough drafts by the tenth.
Priya: The tenth works for me.
You: Me too. And let’s check in like once a week? Just so nobody’s guessing.
Jake: Yeah, let’s do Fridays. Okay, that was easy. Way easier than my last group.

Please remember the deadline. | 像在提醒下属 | Let's put the dates in the doc. |
1. How do you wanna split this up?
2. I'd rather not …
I'd rather not do all the writing(我不想包写作)比 I can't write well I'd rather take the data part, if that's okay.
Let's check in on Fridays
You(负责统稿,周五晚上打开共享文档发现问题) Jake(自己的部分做完了,人很直) Priya(负责文献,最近在忙别的事)
You: Hey — checking in on the doc. Jake, your survey section looks great.
Jake: Thanks. It took me like four hours, but it’s done.
You: Yeah, it shows. Priya — how’s the sources section coming?
Priya: Um. So I haven’t really started. I had two midterms this week.
Jake: Oh. Okay.
You: Okay. Do you know when you can get to it?
Priya: Probably Sunday? I’m sorry, I know that’s late.
Jake: Sunday’s kind of a problem, because the draft’s due the tenth and the tenth is Tuesday.
You: Let’s not panic. Priya, how much time do you actually need for it?
Priya: If I sit down and do it? Like three hours. It’s not hard, I just haven’t done it.
You: Okay, that’s doable. So Sunday night?
Priya: Sunday night. I’ll put it in the doc by eleven.
Jake: Can we get that in writing? Not to be a jerk, just so we all know.
Priya: Yeah, that’s fair. I’ll message the group when it’s up.
You: Great. And if it’s not happening by Sunday night, just tell us. We’d rather know than guess.
Priya: I will. Thanks for not being weird about it.
Jake: It happens. I did the same thing in my psych group last semester.
You: Same. Okay — one more thing. Can everyone look at the intro tonight or tomorrow? It’s short.
Jake: Yeah, I’ll read it after dinner.
Priya: I’ll do it tonight and then start on the sources.
You: Perfect. I’ll keep the doc open and edit as things come in.

You didn't do your part. | 直接指责人,对方立刻防御 | I don't see the sources section in the doc yet. |
Why are you always late? | always 是全面否定,小组里等于翻脸 | Do you know when you can get to it? |
You must finish it on Sunday. |
I am very disappointed. | 情感表达过重,美国同学会尴尬 | Sunday's kind of a problem, because the draft's due Tuesday. |
This is your responsibility. | 像在划责任,关系会变僵 | We'd rather know than guess. |
Please don't delay anymore. | 教训人 | Just tell us if it's not happening by Sunday. |
You didn't do your part(你没做你那份)是评价人;I don't see the sources section in the doc yet(我还没在文档里看到文献那节)是陈述事实。
Why haven't you started? Do you know when you can get to it?
3. Not to be a jerk, but …
No offense, but …、Not to be that person, but …
Jake(想加访谈环节,觉得这样更出彩) You(担心时间不够,想把范围收紧) Priya(中间派,负责文献,看数据说话)
Jake: So I had an idea. What if we interview like three people and put quotes in?
You: Oh — interviews? That’s kind of a lot this late.
Jake: It’d make the report way better, though. Real quotes always land better than survey numbers.
You: I see your point. My worry is we’ve got ten days.
Priya: How long does an interview take? Like, setting it up plus transcribing?
Jake: I mean — if we do it right, maybe two hours each with transcription.
Priya: So six hours. Plus we still have to write.
You: And the rubric doesn’t even mention interviews. It says “at least five sources.”
Jake: Yeah, but it doesn’t say we can’t.
Priya: Okay, that’s true. But it also doesn’t give us points for it.
Jake: Man. Okay, so what are you guys actually saying?
You: I’m saying: let’s get the five sources nailed first. If we have time left over, we add one interview.
Jake: So it’s a maybe.
Priya: It’s a yes if we’re on schedule Thursday. That’s a real maybe, not a no.
Jake: Alright. I can live with that. Can I at least draft the questions?
You: Yeah, that’s free. Draft them, and if we get the time, we use them.
Jake: Cool. And if we don’t, I’ll use them for the presentation Q and A.
Priya: Oh, that’s actually smart. Then it’s not wasted either way.
You: Right. So let’s lock the scope: five sources, survey, ten pages. Nothing else until Thursday.
Jake: Locked. I’ll message you if I think of something else.
You: Please do. I’d rather hear it early than find out Tuesday.

I don't agree with you. | 太直接,小组里像对抗 | I see your point, but I'm worried about the time. |
Your idea is not good. | 评价对方的想法,伤人 | My worry is we've only got ten days. |
You are wrong. | 对人不对事 | The rubric doesn't mention interviews. |

This is not my problem. | 破坏小组关系 | I'd rather hear it early than find out Tuesday. |
1. I see your point, but …
I hear you, but …、That's fair, but …
The rubric doesn't mention interviews
3. I can live with that 是真正的妥协表态。
4. lock the scope
Priya(文献终于交了,但格式乱了) You(统稿的人,晚上十点还在改) Jake(负责做 PPT,人在宿舍,线上)
Priya: Okay, the sources are in. I put all five in the doc.
You: Thanks. Oh — these citations are in MLA. We’re supposed to use APA.
Priya: What? Since when?
You: It’s on the rubric. “APA format.” Bottom of page two.
Priya: Ugh. Okay, how bad is it? Do we have to redo all five?
You: It’s mostly the dates and the italics. I can fix it, but it’ll take me like forty minutes.
Priya: I’ll do it. You’ve got the intro and conclusion. Give me the list.
You: Here — it’s the same five issues over and over. Year goes right after the author.
Priya: Okay, I can do that. I’m sorry, I should have checked the format.
You: It’s fixable. That’s all that matters. Jake, you there?
Jake: Yeah, I’m here. Slides are done — eleven of them. Want me to share my screen?
You: In a sec. First — how long is the presentation supposed to be?
Jake: Ten minutes. Plus questions.
You: Eleven slides in ten minutes. That’s about fifty seconds a slide.
Jake: Yeah, I know. I’ll cut two. Which ones?
Priya: Cut the background ones. We can say that out loud.
Jake: Done. Okay — and who’s presenting what?
You: I’ll do the intro and conclusion, you do the survey, Priya does the sources?
Priya: Can I do the conclusion instead? I hate presenting the lit review. It’s just a list of names.
You: Sure. So I’ll do intro and sources.
Jake: Works for me. Okay — it’s ten o’clock. What’s the actual deadline?
You: Midnight tomorrow. And I still have to read the whole thing through once.
Jake: Do you want me to read it? I can do a pass tonight.
You: That’d help. Just look for anything that doesn’t make sense.
Priya: I can check all the numbers against my sources. That’s the part that gets caught.
You: Perfect. Okay — let’s meet back here at nine tomorrow morning. Not ten. Nine.

| Let’s meet back here at nine. |
I would like to suggest that we consider ——全是 Cut two. Which ones?、Works for me.、In a sec.。
2. It's fixable 比 Don't worry 有用。
It's fixable. That's all that matters.(能改,这才是重点)给的是具体判断,不是安慰。
3. It's on the rubric
It's on the rubric
I hate presenting the lit review,你换给她结论,这不是迁就,是效率。
Professor Grant(这门课的教授,中期要求每个小组做一次五分钟进度汇报) You(负责主讲) Jake(同组,负责回答问题) Priya(同组,负责记下老师的要求)
Professor Grant: Okay, you’ve got five minutes. Walk me through where you are.
You: Sure. So we’re doing the report on tipping norms. We’ve got five sources, a survey with forty responses, and about seven pages drafted.
Professor Grant: Forty responses. How’d you get those?
💬 Grant
Jake: I posted it in three group chats and stood outside the dining hall for an hour.
Professor Grant: That’s real data collection. Good. What’s your claim, though?
You: Our claim is that people decide the tip before the service is over. Like, they’ve already picked a number in their head.
Professor Grant: Okay. And what would change your mind?
💬 Grant
You: Sorry — what would change our mind?
Professor Grant: Yeah. If you found something that contradicted you, what would it look like?
You: Um. I guess if people said they adjust it after the meal. We didn’t ask that directly.
Professor Grant: Then that’s your gap. You’ve got a claim you can’t be wrong about. Fix that before you write the conclusion.
(writing) Priya: Can we add one question to the survey?
Professor Grant: You can. You won’t get forty more responses, but ten would be enough to say something.
You: Okay. So one question about when they decide.
Professor Grant: One question. Don’t rebuild the whole thing. What else do you need from me?
Jake: Is the presentation supposed to be ten minutes with questions, or ten including questions?
Professor Grant: Ten including questions. So plan for seven.
💬 Grant
Jake: Oh. Good to know. We had eleven slides.
Professor Grant: Cut it to five. Nobody has ever complained that a presentation was too short.
💬 Grant
You: Five slides, seven minutes. Got it.
Professor Grant: And send me your outline by Friday. Not the whole draft. Just the outline and your claim.
Priya: Just so I have it — Friday, outline and claim. I’ll email you the confirmation today.
Professor Grant: That’s the right instinct. Okay, you’re in good shape. Go.

|---|---|---|
We are doing our best. | 空话,教授要的是信息 | We've got five sources and seven pages drafted. |
Our report is almost finished. | almost 太模糊,没法判断 | About seven pages of ten are drafted. |
We have no problems.
Can you tell us what to do? | 把决定权全交出去,显得没主导 | We're thinking of adding one survey question — does that work? |
This is a small problem. | 中文式的淡化,英文里显得不专业 | We found a gap in our claim — here's how we're fixing it. |
Thank you for your guidance.
1. What would change your mind?
almost done、pretty good、a lot of work seven pages of ten、forty responses、five sources
We found a gap in our claim, and here's how we're fixing it
Just so I have it — Friday, outline and claim

Jake delivered his section on time and helped with the slides比He is good有用一百倍。
Did you talk to them?——你答不上来,吃亏的是你。

1. How do you wanna split this up?
how do you wanna SPLIT this up——重音落在动作上,意思清楚利落。
2. I see your point 里的 point 要稍重、稍长。
3. I can live with that 用降调。
4. We'd rather know than guess 里 rather 要弱读。
