| 分数怎么算 | 卷面分 | 常有 curve(按排名调分)、drop the lowest(去掉最低一次) |
Can we go over question four? I want to understand what I missed.——问过程;错误姿势是 Can you give me two more points?——要分数。
Professor Grant(社会学教授,考试前一周发了复习指南) You(大三,第一次上他的课,不知道他的出题习惯)
You: Hi, Professor Grant. Do you have a few minutes to talk about the midterm?
Professor Grant: Sure, sit down. What do you want to know?
💬 Grant
You: I read the study guide, but I’m not sure how to use it. Is it a list of what’s on the exam?
Professor Grant: It’s a list of topics, not questions. Anything on it can show up. Nothing off it will.
You: Okay, that’s helpful. So the part about Durkheim — is that a whole essay question, or just a term?
Professor Grant: One of the three essay questions will be on him. You’ll get a choice of three, answer two.
You: Got it. And the short answers — are those from the readings or from lecture?
Professor Grant: Both. That’s usually where people lose points, actually. They only study the lectures.
You: Noted. Can I ask about the format? Is it blue book, or do we write in class?
Professor Grant: Bring a blue book. You can get them at the bookstore for about a dollar.
You: Sorry — what’s a blue book?
Professor Grant: It’s a blank exam booklet. You write your essays in it. Every school uses them, they’re always blue.
You: Okay. Are we allowed notes?
Professor Grant: One page, handwritten, both sides. Not typed.
💬 Grant
You: Handwritten, one page. And do we need to bring the readings?
Professor Grant: No. Closed book except for that one page.
💬 Grant
You: Last thing — is there a curve?
Professor Grant: There is, but don’t count on it. It helps the middle, not the bottom.
You: Understood. Thank you — that’s everything I needed.
Professor Grant: Good. And come to the review session Friday. Half the class skips it and then complains about the format.

2. blue book
What's a blue book?
3. curve
Maya(同班同学,笔记记得全,但概念老混) You(读完材料但记不住细节) Devon(第三个同学,来得晚,带着咖啡)
Maya: Okay, so we’ve got three days. How do we wanna do this?
You: I vote we each take a topic and teach it. Like, out loud.
Maya: Teach it? To each other?
You: Yeah. I read everything and I still can’t remember it. Talking might help.
(sitting down) Devon: Sorry I’m late. What’d I miss?
Maya: Wei wants us to teach each other. Which means you’re doing something.
Devon: Fine by me. Which topic? I’m worst at the methods stuff.
You: That’s actually good. If you’re worst at it, teach that one first.
Devon: That’s backwards.
You: No, it works. You have to know it well enough to say it out loud.
Maya: Okay, I’ll take the theory part. Durkheim and Weber.
You: I’ll do the readings we did after the midterm. That’s the part I keep blanking on.
Devon: So how long do we go? I’ve got work at six.
Maya: Two hours? Twenty minutes each, then we quiz each other.
You: Can we do it the other way? Test first, then teach what we got wrong.
Maya: Oh, that’s smarter. Then we’re not wasting time on stuff we know.
Devon: Agreed. Where do we get questions?
You: The study guide has like twenty. Let’s split them.
Maya: Okay. Devon, explain the difference between correlation and causation. In your own words.
Devon: Um. Correlation is when two things move together. Causation is when one actually makes the other happen.
Maya: And why does it matter?
Devon: Because … you can’t assume one from the other. Like, ice cream sales and drowning both go up in summer.
Maya: Yep. That’s the example from lecture, by the way. You remembered it.
Devon: Huh. I guess I did.
You: See? Teaching works. Okay, my turn. Ask me one.

Teach it to each other
2. I vote we …
I vote we start with the hard part.
3. I keep blanking on it
My mind goes blank.、It's on the tip of my tongue.(就在嘴边)
I've got work at six,这不是不礼貌,是美国人的默认习惯——先声明边界。
Professor Grant(监考教授) You(考前十分钟到教室,手里捏着那张手写笔记) Maya(旁边座位的同学)
Professor Grant: Alright, find a seat, not next to anyone you know. Phones off and in your bag, not your pocket.
You: Professor Grant — quick question. Can I use a pencil? I only brought pens.
Professor Grant: I’ve got extras up here. Come grab one.
💬 Grant
You: Thanks. Oh — and I put the notes on both sides like you said. Is that okay?
Professor Grant: Let me see. … Yeah, that’s fine. Pen or pencil, doesn’t matter.
(whispering) Maya: Do you know if he curves?
(whispering) You: Yeah, but he said don’t count on it.
Professor Grant: Folks, no talking once the exam starts. That includes whispering.
Professor Grant: You get two hours. I’ll give you a ten-minute warning and a two-minute warning. Write your name and section number on the blue book.
You: Sorry — which section number?
Professor Grant: Your discussion section. It’s on the syllabus. If you don’t know it, write the time of your section.
Professor Grant: Ten minutes left. If you haven’t started your second essay, start it now.
(to herself) You: Okay, two paragraphs is enough for this one. Don’t panic.
(after the bell) Maya: I did not finish. I left the last one half blank.
You: Same. I got through two of the three.
Professor Grant: Alright — blue books up here, please. And listen.
💬 Grant
Professor Grant: Don’t discuss the questions with anyone who hasn’t taken it yet. Word travels, and I do find out.
(to Maya) You: So we can’t talk about it at all?
Maya: Not with anyone who hasn’t taken it. After tomorrow it’s fine.

3. section number
4. half blank
美国人描述考试没做完会说得非常直白:I left it blank(我空着了)、I ran out of time(时间不够)、I bombed it(考砸了)。
Marcus(这门课的 TA,负责批期中卷,答疑时段在周五) You(拿了 81 分,第三题的分数跟预期差很多) Maya(陪你去,她自己也想看卷子)
Marcus: Hey, come on in. You’re here about the midterm?
You: Yeah. I want to go over question three. I got four out of twelve and I’m not sure why.
Marcus: Sure, let me find it. What’s your name?
You: Wei Chen.
💬 你: Wei Chen。
Marcus: Here we go. Okay, so — you defined the concept correctly, that’s the four points. But you didn’t apply it.
You: Apply it how? I thought the question was asking for a definition.
Marcus: It says “define and illustrate.” Illustrate means give an example.
You: Oh. I read “illustrate” and I thought it just meant “explain clearly.”
Marcus: That’s a really common misread. A lot of people did it.
You: Is there any way to get partial credit for that?
Marcus: Not retroactively, no. The grading’s done and the professor signs off on it.
You: Okay. That’s fair, I’m not going to argue it. Can I ask how I’d do it next time?
Marcus: Yeah — three sentences of definition, then three sentences of a real example. You had the first three.
You: Got it. That’s actually useful. So is that why my overall was an 81?
Marcus: Mostly. Your other two essays were strong. You lost points on the short answers across the board.
Maya: Can I look at mine too? I got a 74 and I don’t know where it went.
Marcus: Sure, what’s your name? … Maya, here. Same issue, actually — question three.
Maya: Ugh. Okay, so this one question cost both of us.
Marcus: It cost about half the class. I’m telling the professor to reword it next time.
You: Can we ask — is there a rewrite or anything?
Marcus: Not on this exam. But the final’s worth more, and question three on the final will be the same format. So prepare for it.
You: Good to know. Thanks, Marcus.

(Can I look at my exam?),TA
Can we go over question three? Can you give me more points?
3. That's fair, I'm not going to argue it.
How would I do it next time?
Dr. Reyes(学术诚信办公室的协调员,负责这次的 case) You(论文里有一个改写段落没标出处,助教报了上来)
Dr. Reyes: Thanks for coming in. Before we start — you’re not in trouble right now. This is a conversation, and I’m going to take notes.
You: Okay. I’ve never done this before, so I don’t really know what to expect.
Dr. Reyes: That’s fine. Here’s the report from your TA. She flagged one paragraph. Do you want to read it?
You: Yeah. (reading) Okay, I see which one.
Dr. Reyes: So what happened with that paragraph?
💬 Reyes
You: I paraphrased an article and put the citation at the end of the paragraph instead of at the start. I didn’t know the placement mattered.
Dr. Reyes: Okay. And did you change the words, or keep the original wording?
You: I changed some. I kept the technical terms.
Dr. Reyes: Let me read it next to the source. … Yeah, this is close. The structure is the same as the original.
You: I didn’t realize that counted. I thought if I changed the words, it was fine.
Dr. Reyes: That’s the most common misunderstanding we see. It’s not usually people copying on purpose.
You: Can I ask what happens now?
Dr. Reyes: For a first case on a draft, usually nothing formal. But I want you to do two things.
You: Okay.
Dr. Reyes: One: attend the citation workshop. It’s an hour, and it’s online. Two: rewrite that paragraph and resubmit it to your TA.
You: That’s it?
Dr. Reyes: That’s it. And one honest question — did you have the source open while you wrote it?
You: … Yes.
Dr. Reyes: That’s why. Read it, close it, then write. If you can’t remember it, you don’t know it well enough yet.
You: Nobody ever told me that.
Dr. Reyes: Now somebody has. And I appreciate you not making something up. People do, and it always goes worse.
You: I figured the truth was easier.
Dr. Reyes: It is. Here’s the workshop link. And if you’re ever unsure about a source, email me before you submit. That’s literally my job.
You: I will. Thank you, Dr. Reyes.

You're not in trouble right now
Everybody does this(大家都这样)、The TA didn't explain(助教没讲)这类话会让处理立刻升级。 I had the source open while I wrote
3. paraphrase
email me before you submit

缺考要么走 make-up(老师另出一份卷子),要么申请 incomplete(在约定期限内补完整门课)。

1. What's on the exam?
what's ON the exam——重音落在 on,意思是"考哪些内容"。
2. I'm not going to argue it 用降调,而且语速放慢。
4. That's fair
THAT'S FAIR——
