|---|---|---|
| Common App |
Dana Whitfield(招生办副主任,刚讲完一场宣讲会) You(高三学生,手里攥着一张写满问题的纸) Mom(你妈,比你还积极,一直往前挤)
You: Excuse me — Ms. Whitfield? Do you have a minute?
Dana: Sure, I’ve got a few minutes before my ride. What’s on your mind?
You: Okay, I wrote a few down so I wouldn’t blank. First one — is the test-optional policy still in place for international students?
Dana: It is, yeah. Test-optional means exactly that — optional. No penalty for not submitting.
You: So if I do have a score that’s decent, should I send it?
Dana: Depends on the rest of your file. If your grades are strong, a middling score doesn’t add much. A strong score can help.
Mom: Sorry — one quick thing. My friend’s son got in with a 1350. Is that still enough?
Dana: We don’t have a cutoff. I know that’s frustrating to hear, but it’s true.
You: Okay, next one. I’m thinking of applying undecided. Does that hurt me?
Dana: Not in most of our programs. You’d apply to the college, not the major. Some majors do require a direct admit, though.
You: How do I know which ones?
Dana: It’s on each program’s page. If a major says “direct admission,” that’s the one.
You: Got it. Last one — does demonstrated interest actually count?
Dana: Great question, and the honest answer is: it depends on the school. We track it. Some schools don’t.
You: So a campus visit and a few emails — worth anything?
Dana: Worth something. Worth a lot less than people think. An interview matters more.
Mom: And the essay — how important is it, really?
Dana: For a student in the middle of our pool, it’s often the deciding piece. For a student at the top or the bottom, less so.
You: Okay. That’s really helpful. Thank you for your time.
Dana: Of course. And hey — email the office if anything else comes up. Put your full name and your school in the subject line.
(Dana
Mom: You did good. I didn’t understand half of it.
You: That’s because you asked about your friend’s son.

Teacher Whitfield, I have a question. | 美国不用 Teacher 当称呼 | Ms. Whitfield, do you have a minute? |
My score is 1350, is it enough? | 招生官不能答,而且像在报数 | Should I submit a 1350 if the rest of my file is strong? |
Can you guarantee I can get in? | 没人能保证,问出来很尴尬 | What do you look for in a student like me? |
I want to know the secret of admission. | secret 让招生官没法接 | What makes an application stand out in your pool? |
My mother wants to ask. Can I ask one more? |
Thank you, I will contact you frequently. | frequently 是骚扰预告 | Thanks — I'll email the office if anything else comes up. |
1. Do you have a minute? 比 Can I ask you a question?
2. depends on the school
3. demonstrated interest
(How does financial aid work for international students?),学术和文书的部分自己问。
Li Wei — Beijing No. 4 HS — Question about transfer credits。
Ms. Alvarez(学校升学顾问,带过二十年毕业班) You(文书第三稿,写的是自己从小喜欢生物)
Ms. Alvarez: Okay, I read it. Sit down. First question — what’s this essay about?
You: It’s about how I’ve loved biology since I was a kid.
Ms. Alvarez: Right. And that’s what’s on your activities list. So why do I need two pages of it?
You: … Because it shows my passion?
Ms. Alvarez: Everybody says passion. Show me a Tuesday.
💬 Alvarez
You: A Tuesday?
Ms. Alvarez: One ordinary afternoon. Where were you, what were you doing, what went wrong, what did you do about it.
You: Okay … so junior year, the lab mouse died. That’s the one that actually stayed with me.
Ms. Alvarez: There it is. Start there. Cut the first paragraph entirely.
You: All of it? That’s the one I spent the most time on.
Ms. Alvarez: I can tell. It’s beautiful and it says nothing.
You: Ouch.
Ms. Alvarez: You want me to be nice, or you want to get in?
💬 Alvarez
You: Fair. Okay — so if I start with the mouse, where does the “why biology” part go?
Ms. Alvarez: It goes away. If the story’s good, they’ll get it themselves.
You: That’s scary.
Ms. Alvarez: It’s supposed to be. Read me your first sentence of the new draft.
You: “The mouse was number seven, and number seven was not supposed to die.”
Ms. Alvarez: Okay. That’s a first sentence. Go write the rest.
You: One more thing — how much of this should be about the research itself, and how much about me?
Ms. Alvarez: The research is the setting. You’re the story. Seven hundred words of setting is a paper, not an essay.
You: Got it. And I should keep it under the word limit, right?
Ms. Alvarez: Under is fine. Over isn’t an option — the system cuts you off.
You: Okay. I’ll have a draft by Monday.
Ms. Alvarez: Sunday night. You always say Monday and it’s always Tuesday.
You: Sunday night. Deal.

|---|---|---|
I have loved biology since I was a child. The mouse was number seven. |
I am a hardworking and responsible student. |
This experience made me grow a lot. | grow 的中式用法,英文不这么收尾 | After that, I stopped treating the data as background noise. |
Please help me to modify my essay. | 中式说法,且显得你只想要人代改 | Can you read this and tell me what's not working? |
My English is not good enough for writing. | 提前给失败找理由 | I'd rather rewrite it than patch it — where should I start? |
I want to write something impressive. | 目标错了,impressive 不是目标 | I want it to sound like me. |
1. Show, don't tell
I'm passionate about science 是 tell;I stayed in the lab until the security guard kicked me out 是 show。
Common App
Can you read this and tell me what's not working? Please help me improve it 具体得多。
Ryan Cole(校友面试官,毕业十二年,做产品经理) You(第一次参加美式面试,提前十分钟到了咖啡店)
Ryan: Hey — you must be Wei. I’m Ryan. Thanks for coming out on a Saturday.
You: Thanks for making the time. Sorry, am I early?
Ryan: You’re right on time. Can I get you anything? Coffee’s on me.
You: Oh — just water’s fine, thanks.
Ryan: So, this is pretty informal. It’s a conversation, not an interrogation. Cool?
You: Cool. Honestly, that’s a relief.
Ryan: Good. So — tell me a little about yourself.
You: Okay, um. I’m from Beijing. I’m in my last year of high school, and I spend most of my free time on the robotics team. I’m the one who does the wiring, which nobody else wants to do.
Ryan: Why do you do the part nobody wants?
You: Because when the wiring’s wrong, nothing else matters. It’s the part that has to be right.
Ryan: I like that. Okay, next — why this school?
You: So I looked at the research groups, and there’s one doing soft robotics. That’s exactly what our team kept trying to build and failing at.
Ryan: And if you couldn’t get into that lab?
You: Then I’d still want to be there, because the program makes you take a design course your first year. We don’t have anything like that at home.
Ryan: Good answer. Never make your whole “why” depend on one professor.
You: Noted. Can I ask you something?
Ryan: Please.
You: What do you wish you’d done differently there?
Ryan: Oh, that’s a good question. I wish I’d gone to office hours in my first year. I was intimidated.
You: Intimidated by the professors?
Ryan: By everybody. It gets better. Anyway — you have questions for me about the school?
You: A couple. How big are the intro classes, honestly?
Ryan: Honestly? Three hundred people, and one professor. But the labs are twenty.
You: Okay, that I can work with.
Ryan: Anything you’re worried about?
You: The winters, mostly. I’ve never lived anywhere that cold.
Ryan: Fair. Everyone says that, and then everyone buys the same coat.

| Coffee’s on me. | on me = 我付钱 |
| It’s a conversation, not an interrogation. |
| Tell me a little about yourself. |
| Why do you do the part nobody wants? |
| Why this school? |
| Never make your whole “why” depend on one professor. |
| What do you wish you’d done differently? |
| How big are the intro classes, honestly?

|---|---|---|
I am an outgoing and diligent student. I do the wiring on the robotics team. |
Your university is very famous in China. | 面试官听过一万遍,且不是理由 | There's a lab doing soft robotics — that's what I keep trying to build. |
I want to improve myself. | 太空,美国人会追问"improve 什么" | I want to learn design properly instead of guessing. |
Sorry, my English is not good. | 提前认输,面试官只能尴尬 | Sorry — let me say that again. |
I have no questions. | 面试最后的送分题被你扔了 | I have a couple — how big are the intro classes? |
Thank you very much for your precious time. | precious time 是中式客套 | Thanks for making the time — this was fun. |
2. Tell me a little about yourself
I'm from Beijing, I'm a senior, and I spend most of my free time on the robotics team —— 三句话,把话题引到你最想聊的地方。
What do you wish you'd done differently? 比 What's your school's ranking?
4. Coffee's on me 之后别真的点最贵的东西。
Thanks for the conversation this morning. I really enjoyed hearing about X.
You(材料交完,每天都在刷邮箱) Ms. Alvarez(升学顾问,办公室门口) Dana(招生办,回信的人)
You: Ms. Alvarez, can I ask you something quick?
Ms. Alvarez: If it’s about decisions, the answer is no. Nobody’s heard anything.
You: How did you know?
Ms. Alvarez: Because four other seniors asked me the same thing this morning.
You: Okay, fair. But — is it normal that the portal still says “under review”?
Ms. Alvarez: Completely normal. It’ll say that until the day it doesn’t.
You: So I shouldn’t email them?
Ms. Alvarez: Depends what you’re emailing about. “Any news?” — no. Something real — yes.
You: Like what?
Ms. Alvarez: Like a new award, or a grade that changed, or a question about your file. Something they’d want to know.
You: Okay. Actually — I did get something. Regional robotics, second place.
Ms. Alvarez: Then that’s your email. Keep it to five lines. Want me to look at it?
You: Yes, please.
You: Dear Ms. Whitfield, I’m writing to update my file. Since I submitted, our robotics team placed second at the regional competition. I’ve attached the results page. Thank you, Wei Li
Dana: Hi Wei — thanks for the update. I’ve added it to your file. Decisions go out by April 1. — Dana Whitfield, Office of Admissions
You: Thank you! One question — is it worth sending a midyear grade report if my grades went up?
Dana: Yes — midyear reports are part of the file for most applicants. Your counselor submits it, not you.
You: Got it. Sorry, one more — should I send a letter of continued interest?
Dana: Only if you’re deferred or waitlisted. Not before a decision. Right now it wouldn’t help.
You: That’s what I needed to know. Thanks again.
Dana: Anytime.
——Dana

Please give me a chance, I will work very hard. I'm writing to update my file with a new award. |
Dear Sir or Madam.
I will wait for your good news. | 中式客套,英文里不这么说 | Thank you — I'll keep an eye on the portal. |
2. under review
Have you sent my midyear report?——有些学校会漏,漏了影响很大。
4. letter of continued interest 只用在被 defer 或 waitlist 之后。
Ms. Alvarez(顾问,手上拿着那封 waitlist 通知) You(三月下旬,情绪在崩和不服之间) Dana(招生办,回信)
Ms. Alvarez: Okay, I read it twice. It’s a waitlist letter, not a rejection.
You: It feels like a rejection with extra steps.
Ms. Alvarez: I get it. But look at this line — does it say if the list is ranked?
You: Um … “unranked.” Is that good or bad?
Ms. Alvarez: Neither. Unranked means they re-read files when spots open up.
You: So there’s still a chance.
Ms. Alvarez: There’s always a chance. Don’t build your spring around it. What else does it say?
You: “You may send one additional statement of continued interest.” So one.
Ms. Alvarez: Then one. And it needs to answer one question: if we take you, will you come?
You: I’d come. That’s easy.
Ms. Alvarez: Then say it in the first two lines. Don’t make them hunt for it.
You: Okay. What else goes in? Another “I love your school” paragraph?
Ms. Alvarez: No. New information only. Anything since November?
You: I got the regional robotics result. And I made the dean’s list last term.
Ms. Alvarez: Both go in. One line each. Anything you’d do differently — any grade that dipped?
You: Chemistry went from an A to a B-plus. Should I mention that?
Ms. Alvarez: Only if you have a real reason. And “it was hard” is not a reason.
You: Then I’ll leave it out.
Ms. Alvarez: Good instinct. Now — who’s your second choice, and did you pay the deposit?
You: I paid the deposit at State last week. May 1 deadline.
Ms. Alvarez: Smart. You hold that spot until you hear back. Don’t let it go for a maybe.
You: Right. So — can you read the letter when I’m done?
Ms. Alvarez: Send it tonight. Keep it under a page. And Wei — send it to admissions, not to me, and check if they want it uploaded or emailed.
You: On it.

|---|---|---|
I beg you to give me a chance. | 乞求语气在美式语境里非常减分 | If admitted, I will enroll. I'm writing to say that clearly. |

My grade dropped because the teacher was strict. |
I will wait for your reply forever. | 表述夸张,英文里很怪 | Thank you for considering my file again. |
If admitted, I will enroll.,后面再给两条新信息,一页收尾。

1. Why this school?
2. Tell me a little about yourself 里重音在 little。
3. honestly
Honestly, three hundred people.
4. Ouch.
Ouch. Thank you for your advice
