Good question.
10-20%(participation) |
Professor Bennett(心理学导论课教授,讲课快、不照着 PPT 念) You(大二国际生,第一次上她的课)
Professor Bennett: Okay, so — before we start on chapter one, let me run through the syllabus real quick. Page two has the grade breakdown, page four has the due dates.
You: Sorry — I’m sorry, could you slow down a little? I’m still on page one.
Professor Bennett: Oh, sure. Take your time. So, page two.
💬 Bennett
You: Okay, I’m there.
Professor Bennett: Grade breakdown: participation fifteen, two midterms thirty, final thirty, group project twenty-five. Got it?
You: Sorry, can I ask — what counts as participation? Is it attendance, or…
Professor Bennett: Good question. Attendance is part of it, but it’s mostly talking. Discussion section, questions in lecture, that kind of thing.
You: Okay. So if I don’t say anything all semester, I lose that fifteen percent?
Professor Bennett: Basically, yeah. I’ve had students do that. They don’t love the outcome.
You: Noted.
Professor Bennett: Alright, page four — due dates. There’s a reading response every other week, and it’s always due Sunday at midnight.
You: Sunday at midnight. Is that uploaded somewhere, or…
Professor Bennett: Canvas. Everything goes on Canvas. If it’s not on Canvas, I don’t have it.
You: Got it. And one more — is that midnight Sunday, or sort of Sunday night into Monday?
Professor Bennett: Midnight Sunday. Eleven fifty-nine is fine, twelve-oh-one is late. The system timestamps it.
You: Okay, that’s clear. Thanks.
Professor Bennett: Any other questions about the syllabus? No? Okay — chapter one. Who did the reading?
Professor Bennett: Nobody? Great. This is going to be a fun semester.
💬 Bennett

What is the score rule? | 中文直译,英文没这个说法 | How's the grade broken down? |
I have a problem about the syllabus. | problem 听起来像出大事了 | I have a question about the syllabus. |
Repeat again, please. | repeat 和 again 重复了 | Could you say that again? |
2. Got it / Noted / Okay, that's clear
Got it.
3. 老师问 Any questions?
4. Canvas / Blackboard
Professor Bennett(教授) You(坐在第三排,笔记记了一半跟不上)
Professor Bennett: Okay, let’s pick up where we left off. We were on classical conditioning. Before I move on — anything from the reading you want me to clear up?
You: Yeah, actually — can I stop you there for a second?
Professor Bennett: Of course. Go ahead.
💬 Bennett
You: You went kind of fast on extinction. Could you go back to that part?
Professor Bennett: Sure, sure. So extinction — that’s when the conditioned response fades, because you stop pairing the two things. The dog stops salivating. Make sense?
You: I think so. So extinction is the response going away?
Professor Bennett: Right. And spontaneous recovery is when it comes back after a break. That’s the one people mix up.
You: Okay — recovery is it coming back. Got it.
Professor Bennett: Exactly. Anything else?
💬 Bennett
You: Quick question — is this gonna be on the exam?
Professor Bennett: Good question. Yes. Both terms. I’d write those down.
You: Noted. Thanks.
Professor Bennett: Okay, so — operant conditioning works a little differently …
You: Sorry, one more thing — how do you spell that? Operant?
Operant?
Professor Bennett: O-p-e-r-a-n-t. It’s on the slide too.
You: Got it, thanks.
Professor Bennett: No problem. Alright — with operant conditioning, the consequence comes after the behavior …
You: Sorry, can I ask one more real quick?
Professor Bennett: Yeah, go ahead.
💬 Bennett
You: Is that the same as reinforcement, or is that something different?
Professor Bennett: Different, but related. Reinforcement is one type of consequence. Hold that thought — we’ll get there in about ten minutes.
You: Okay, I’ll hold it.
Professor Bennett: Okay, so … imagine a rat in a box.
💬 Bennett
You: Sorry — last one, I promise. Does the reading for Thursday cover this too?
Professor Bennett: It does, yeah. Chapter four. The reading goes into more detail than I will.
You: Chapter four. Okay, thanks, Professor Bennett.
Professor Bennett: You’re welcome. Okay — the rat in the box.
💬 Bennett

| You went kind of fast on …
| Could you say that in a different way?

| Sorry — last one, I promise. |
Good question.、Great — hold that thought.。
3. I think so 和 Got it 不一样。
4. Hold that thought
Priya(TA,带这个 discussion section 的研究生助教) You(section 里唯一不说话的国际生) Maya(同班同学,坐你旁边,话多)
Priya: Okay, so — same as last week. I want to hear from you, not from me. Who wants to start us off on the reading?
Priya: Anybody? Nobody? Okay, this is the part where I wait awkwardly.
(quietly to you) Maya: Just say something. She’s not gonna grade us on it being smart.
You: Okay — um, I can start.
Priya: Please. Go ahead.
You: So, I read the chapter, but honestly the last part kind of lost me. What I did get was that conditioning is basically learning by association.
Priya: Great, that’s exactly the core of it. What was it that lost you?
You: The spontaneous recovery part. Like, why does the response come back at all? What’s the point of that?
Priya: Oh, that’s a really good question. Anyone want to take a shot at it?
Maya: Isn’t it like — the brain keeps the connection kind of on file? So if the thing shows up again, it doesn’t have to learn it from scratch?
Priya: Yes. That’s the standard answer, and you got there without me.
You: Can I add something?
Priya: Of course.
You: So it’s kind of efficient, then. The system doesn’t fully delete, it just stops using it.
Priya: Exactly. Write that down, everybody. Okay — who’s next? Maya?
Maya?
Maya: Yeah, I’ve got one. I didn’t get why the little Albert study is still in the textbook if it’s considered unethical now.
Priya: Ooh. Okay, we’re gonna spend the rest of the time on that one.

My English is poor, so I can't say. | 过度自我贬低,而且把发言机会推出去了 | I'll try — I might not say this the right way. |
I have no idea about this chapter. | 太绝对,等于宣布没读 | The last part kind of lost me. |
I want to say something. | 铺垫太长,美国同学直接开口 | Can I add something? |
I don't agree with him. | 讨论课里太硬,像吵架 | I see it a little differently. |
This question is very difficult. | 评论问题本身,没推进讨论 | I'm not sure I follow — can you say more? |
Please give me a chance to speak. Okay, I can start. |
1. section
Hey, can I ask you something?。
3. kind of lost me 是"我跟丢了"的标准说法。
比 I don't understand 软得多,也比 I didn't understand anything 准确——它说的是"到某处为止我跟上了,后面没跟上"。同理 That part kind of went over my head.(那块我没听懂)。
Professor Bennett(刚下课,正在收电脑) You(想赶在她走出教室前问清楚) Maya(跟你一起过去,她也有问题)
You: Professor Bennett? Sorry — quick question about the homework.
Professor Bennett: Sure, what’s up?
💬 Bennett
You: Is it the chapter questions, or the worksheet?
Professor Bennett: The worksheet. Questions one through eight. The chapter questions are optional.
You: Okay. And it’s due Thursday?
Professor Bennett: Thursday by midnight — uploaded to Canvas.
You: Got it. Oh — one more thing. Is it okay if I turn it in a day late? I’ve got two other things due that day.
Professor Bennett: Not for full credit, no. Ten percent off per day. That’s in the syllabus.
You: Okay, that’s fair. I’ll get it in on time then.
Maya: Can I jump in? I’m confused about question six. Are we supposed to use the data from class, or find our own?
Professor Bennett: Use the class data. I want to see if you can apply the concept, not whether you can Google.
Maya: Okay, that makes way more sense. Thanks.
Professor Bennett: Anything else? I’ve got a meeting in five.
💬 Bennett
You: That’s it for me. Actually — no, sorry. Is there a chance of extra credit? I’m a little worried about my grade.
Professor Bennett: Not on this assignment. There’s one extra credit thing at the end of the semester. I’ll announce it.
You: Okay. Thanks, Professor Bennett.
Professor Bennett: Mm-hmm. See you Thursday.
💬 Bennett
Maya: You know there’s an easier way to find all that out, right? It’s all on the syllabus.
You: I know. I read it. I just wanted to hear her say it.
Maya: Fair. Honestly, same.

|---|---|---|
What is the homework? | 语法可以但不自然 | What's the homework? / What are we supposed to do for Thursday? |
Can you give me more time? | 太笼统,老师没法答 | Is it okay if I turn it in a day late? |
I have three exams that day, so I can't finish. | 像在诉苦和找借口 | I've got two other things due that day — what's the late policy? |
Please forgive me for being late. | 中式道歉,美式场景里过重 | Sorry it's late — here it is. |
Will you deduct my points? | 被动语态很书面 | How much is the late penalty? |
I need extra credit. | need 太直接,像要求 | Is there any chance of extra credit? |
1. Is it okay if I …? 比 Can I …?
Can I turn it in late? Is it okay if I turn it in a day late?
I'm not going to make Thursday — is there any flexibility?,很多老师会给一两天宽限,尤其是你平时按时交。
I've got a meeting in five,就该收了。
That's it — thanks for your time. 就行。
4. That's fair
Professor Bennett(office hours 里,桌上摊着一堆卷子) You(期中拿了个 B-,想知道怎么补)
You: Hi, Professor Bennett. Is this still a good time?
Professor Bennett: Yep, come on in. Sit anywhere. What’s going on?
💬 Bennett
You: I wanted to talk about the midterm. I got a B-minus, and honestly I was expecting better.
Professor Bennett: Okay. Let me pull it up. What’s your last name?
💬 Bennett
You: Chen.
💬 你: Chen。
Professor Bennett: Chen … here we are. So — your multiple choice was almost perfect. You lost most of your points on the short answers.
You: Yeah, that’s what I figured. I thought I knew the material, though.
Professor Bennett: You do know it. That’s the frustrating part. Your answers were too short — you gave the definition and stopped.
You: So what were you looking for?
Professor Bennett: Application. Give me an example from your own life. Two sentences of definition, three sentences of example.
You: Oh. That’s it? I thought short answers meant short.
Professor Bennett: Everybody thinks that. It’s the most common mistake in this class.
You: Okay, that’s really helpful. Can I ask one more thing — is there any way to make up those points?
Professor Bennett: Not on this exam. But there’s an optional rewrite on the second midterm, and I only count the higher score.
You: Oh, good. I’ll definitely do that.
Professor Bennett: Also — come to office hours before the next one. Not after. Half the class shows up after the exam and there’s nothing I can do at that point.
You: Fair point. I’ll come earlier next time.
Professor Bennett: Good. And Chen — a B-minus in my class is not a disaster. You’re fine.
You: Thanks. That actually helps.

| Where did I lose points? |

1. Office hours
Can you give me more points? What were you looking for?、Where did I lose points?,教授讲完标准之后,如果你还有诉求,再说 Is there any way to make up those points?。

1. Can I ask a quick question?
2. Sorry
Sorry, can I stop you there?
QUICK question——
4. 说 I think so 时语调要往上走。
I think so?
