Dr. Park(学术顾问,管三百多个学生,办公室门上贴着 office hours) You(大一第二学期,成绩还行,但方向没定)
Dr. Park: Come on in. You’re … Wei, right? From the intro econ class.
You: That’s me. I’m surprised you remembered.
Dr. Park: I have three hundred advisees. I remember about ten. What’s going on?
You: I need to declare a major by next spring, and I still don’t know what I want.
Dr. Park: Okay. That’s most people. Tell me what you’ve taken so far.
You: Econ, calculus two, stats, a writing seminar, and intro psychology.
Dr. Park: Which one did you like?
💬 Park
You: Stats, actually. I didn’t expect that.
Dr. Park: What did you like about it?
💬 Park
You: It’s the only class where I could tell if I was wrong. Everything else was essays and I never knew.
Dr. Park: That’s a real signal. Have you thought about statistics or data science as a major?
You: I thought data science was only for people who’ve been coding since they were twelve.
Dr. Park: It isn’t. Roughly half our majors start with no coding at all. Let’s look at the requirements.
You: Okay. Is it a big list?
Dr. Park: Eleven courses, and you’ve already done three of them.
💬 Park
You: Really? I thought I’d be starting from zero.
Dr. Park: That’s the thing about being undecided — you weren’t wasting time, you were sampling. Here’s the one problem.
You: What’s the problem?
Dr. Park: You need programming one before you can take anything else in the sequence. It’s offered in the fall and it fills up.
You: So I need to register for it this fall, or I lose a semester.
Dr. Park: Or you lose two, because the next course is only offered in the spring.
💬 Park
You: Okay. That changes things. Can I still add it?
Dr. Park: Registration opens Monday. I’d have a backup section ready. And Wei — before you declare, go talk to two seniors in the major.
You: What should I ask them?
Dr. Park: Ask what they do on a Tuesday night. Not “is it hard” — everyone says it’s hard.
Dr. Park: Then you change. About a third of our students do, and it’s not a crisis.
You: Okay. That makes me feel better. One more — should I do a minor too?
Dr. Park: Not yet. Get the major declared first. Minors are cheap to add later, expensive to add now.
You: That’s a good way to put it. Thanks, Dr. Park.
Dr. Park: Bring me a plan next time. Not a decision — a plan.
💬 Park

I want to change my department. | 中文"系"直译,美国说 major | I want to change majors. |
Which major has the best future? | future 不能这么用 | What do people do with this major after they graduate? |
I am afraid I will waste my time. | 顾问会告诉你没浪费 | I'm worried I'm already behind on the prerequisites. |
Please tell me what I should choose. | 顾问不会替你决定 | Based on what I've taken, what would you look at? |
Is this major difficult? | 所有人都会答"难",没信息量 | What do students actually do on a Tuesday night? |
My parents want me to study business. | 顾问会转去问你自己想什么 | I'm weighing business against statistics — can you compare the requirements? |
1. declare a major
2. prerequisite(先修课)是选专业时最重要的概念。
You weren't wasting time, you were sampling
Is it hard? What's your week actually look like?(你一周实际怎么过的)、What do you wish you'd known your first year?、What do people do after graduation?
Marcus Webb(数据科学专业大三,助教,说话直接) You(在系里的学生休息室堵到他)
You: Hey, Marcus? Dr. Park said I should talk to somebody in the major. Is now a terrible time?
Marcus: It’s fine, I’m just eating. Sit. You thinking about switching in?
You: Yeah, from econ. I’m a sophomore.
Marcus: How’s your calc?
You: Calc two, B-plus. Why?
Marcus: Because that’s the filter. Not the coding — the math. Half the people who drop the major drop it in linear algebra.
You: Good to know. Can I ask you something real?
Marcus: Go ahead. I’ll be honest, that’s why people come find me.
You: What does your week actually look like? Not the brochure version.
Marcus: Two problem sets a week, each one takes me six to eight hours. Plus a lab report. Plus I TA for the intro course.
You: Six to eight hours for one problem set?
Marcus: First semester it was twelve. It gets faster. But yeah — you don’t do this major and also have a job.
You: Okay. And what’s the thing nobody tells you?
Marcus: You spend way more time debugging than thinking. If you hate that feeling, you’ll hate the job too.
You: That’s actually the most useful thing anyone’s told me.
Marcus: Also — take the database course in the spring, not the fall. Fall’s section is with the visiting professor, and nobody knows what’s on the exams.
You: Noted. What about jobs? Do people actually get them?
Marcus: Most of my friends had something by February of senior year. Internships are the real gate.
You: So I should be looking for internships sophomore year?
Marcus: Sophomore summer if you can. Even a boring one. It’s about having something to talk about.
You: And grad school — is that common?
Marcus: Maybe a third go. The rest work for two or three years first. Honestly, the ones who work first come back knowing what they want.
You: Last one — if you could go back to sophomore year, what would you do differently?
Marcus: I’d take the harder version of the stats course. I took the easy one and it didn’t count for the major.
You: Wait — there’s an easy version that doesn’t count?
Marcus: There are two. Same name, different course numbers. Check before you register. Every year somebody finds out too late.
You: That’s terrifying. Okay — can I buy you coffee sometime and ask more?
Marcus: Sure. Email me. And look — don’t declare because of the job market. Declare because you like the Tuesday nights.
You: That’s the second time today somebody told me about Tuesdays.
Marcus: Because it’s the only honest measure. Nobody’s excited on a Tuesday night unless they actually like it.

If you could go back to sophomore year, what would you do differently? ——
3. It gets faster
Do people in this major get jobs? Where did your friends end up?
Maybe a third go, the rest work for two or three years first —— 美国学生很少一路读到底。
Dr. Lin(计算机系本科项目副主任,管转专业审批) You(大二下学期,想从数学转进计算机)
Dr. Lin: Come in. You’re here about the change-of-major form?
💬 Lin
You: Yes. I submitted it last week, and I got an email saying I need to add something.
Dr. Lin: Let me pull it up. … Right. You’re missing the statement, and you’re missing the second recommendation.
You: The statement. What exactly are you looking for in it?
Dr. Lin: Two things. Why computer science, and evidence that you can handle the workload. In that order.
You: Evidence — like grades?
Dr. Lin: Grades help. Projects help more. What have you built?
💬 Lin
You: I built a small tool that reorganizes my lab’s data files. It’s not impressive.
Dr. Lin: Did anyone else use it?
💬 Lin
You: Two people in my lab, actually. And one of them complained about it until I fixed the bug.
Dr. Lin: Put that in. Specific, small, and somebody else used it — that’s a better story than a homework project nobody saw.
Dr. Lin: There is, and I’d rather tell you than have you guess. You need a 3.5 in the four prerequisite courses, not overall.
You: Just those four? What are mine right now?
Dr. Lin: Calc two and discrete math are fine. Data structures is in progress. And you haven’t taken computer organization.
You: So I can’t apply until I’ve taken it?
Dr. Lin: You can apply. But if it’s not on your transcript, the committee can’t see a grade, and that’s a weak file.
Dr. Lin: Or apply now and plan to take it in the fall. Your call. But there’s a cost to waiting too.
You: What’s the cost?
Dr. Lin: Enrolling in the upper-level courses gets harder every semester you’re not in the major. Registration priority goes to majors.
You: Right. So I’d be at the back of the line.
Dr. Lin: You’d be at the back of the line. That’s exactly it.
💬 Lin
You: Okay. One more thing — is there a cap on how many students can switch in?
Dr. Lin: There is. We can take about forty a year, and we get about a hundred and twenty applications.
Dr. Lin: They’re better than they look. About half the applications are incomplete or clearly unprepared.
You: So finishing the file properly actually matters.
Dr. Lin: It’s the cheapest thing you can do. The other thing is — get a recommendation from someone who’s seen you code, not just someone who’s seen your grades.
You: My lab supervisor has seen me code. Is that okay even though she’s not a professor?
Dr. Lin: It’s fine, as long as she can say something specific. Ask her to describe one thing you fixed.
You: Got it. And if I don’t get in this round?
Dr. Lin: You reapply in the fall with a stronger file. People do it. It’s not a door that closes.

You need a 3.5 in the four prerequisite courses, not overall —— 这句话极其重要。
Somebody else used it 是关键。
Dr. Park(学术顾问) You(想 double major,还想加一个辅修)
You: Dr. Park, I want to double major in stats and econ. Is that doable?
Dr. Park: Let’s find out instead of guessing. How many credits do you have?
💬 Park
You: Sixty-two.
Dr. Park: And how many do you need to graduate?
💬 Park
You: A hundred and twenty.
Dr. Park: Okay. Fifty-eight left, eight semesters of that … no, wait. You’re a sophomore, so that’s four semesters plus summer if you use it.
Dr. Park: Normal. Here’s the problem. Double counting.
💬 Park
Dr. Park: Some courses count for both majors. Some don’t. Every program has a limit on how many you can share.
You: So if the limit is two and I need four overlapping courses, I’m taking two extra.
Dr. Park: Now you’re thinking like an advisor. Let me run the audit.
Dr. Park: Okay. With the overlap rules, it’s six extra courses. That’s one extra semester, or two summers.
You: Ouch. That’s a lot. Is there a cheaper option?
Dr. Park: Major plus minor. Stats major, econ minor — that’s one extra course.
Dr. Park: Minors have fewer required courses. That’s the whole point of them.
💬 Park
You: But does a minor look worse to employers? I don’t want to seem like I couldn’t handle the double major.
Dr. Park: Honestly? Nobody has ever asked me that on behalf of an employer. What matters is what you can do.
You: Okay. What about grad school? Do they care about double majors?
Dr. Park: They care about your grades in the courses that matter for their program, and your letters. Not the label.
You: That’s reassuring. Can I ask a dumb question?
Dr. Park: Those are usually the ones I can actually answer.
💬 Park
You: What happens if I declare the double major and then can’t finish it?
Dr. Park: You graduate with whichever one you completed. The other just doesn’t appear. No penalty.
You: Oh. So it’s not all-or-nothing.
Dr. Park: It’s not. But the extra courses are real. Those don’t come back.
You: Fair. What would you do if you were me?
Dr. Park: I’d declare stats as the major, add the econ minor now, and decide about the double major after next semester. Keep the option open.
Dr. Park: It’s also what the audit says. The audit doesn’t care what you hoped.
You: Noted. Can you show me how to run that audit myself?
Dr. Park: Yes — it’s in the student portal, under “degree progress.” Run it every semester. Don’t wait for me.
You: Every semester. Got it. Thanks, Dr. Park.

1. double counting(学分重叠计算)是双专业的关键规则。
Don't wait for me 是真心话。
You graduate with whichever one you completed ——
5. What would you do if you were me?
Mom(越洋电话,晚上十点,她那边是早上) You(刚决定主修统计、辅修经济学,还没跟家里细说)
Mom: So what did the advisor say? Can you still change to business?
You: I can, but I’m not going to. I’m declaring statistics.
Mom: Statistics. What kind of job does that get you?
You: A lot of them, actually. Data analysis, risk, public health, tech. It’s the skill that gets hired, not the name.
Mom: Your cousin studied accounting and got a job at a bank right away.
You: I know. And accounting’s a fine major. It’s just not what I’m good at.
Mom: How do you know what you’re good at? You’re twenty.
You: Fair question. Because statistics is the only class where I could tell whether I was right.
Mom: That’s it? That’s your reason?
You: There’s more. I looked at what graduates do. I talked to a senior. I ran the degree audit.
Mom: Your father is going to ask about salary.
You: I can send you the numbers the career center publishes. They’re public.
Mom: And if it doesn’t work out?
You: Then I change. About a third of students here change majors. It’s not a life sentence.
Mom: In China you can’t just change.
You: I know. That’s why I checked before deciding, not after.
Mom: … Okay. Send me the numbers.
You: I’ll send them tonight. And Mom — one more thing. Statistics isn’t a step down from business. It’s harder.
Mom: Don’t say that to your father.
You: Why not?
Mom: Because he’ll ask why you didn’t pick the easier one.

You: Fair. I’ll just send the numbers.
Mom: Are you eating? You sound tired.

Mom: Love you too. Don’t stay up too late.

I'm not going to. I'm declaring statistics. ——
I can send you the numbers the career center publishes —— 职业中心(career center)通常有毕业生去向报告(first destination report):多少比例就业、多少读研、去了哪些行业、起薪中位数。
3. It's not a life sentence
4. One more thing
Mom — one more thing. Statistics isn't a step down from business. It's harder. ——
5. I'm eating. It's just midterms.

1. Why our program?、Which one did you like?
2. Ouch.
3. Noted.
Noted.
4. Fair.
