Priya(学生会摊位负责人,社团招新志愿者) You(刚到美国的研一学生)
Priya: Hey! Are you interested in intramural sports?
You: Maybe. Sorry, what’s intramural mean?
Priya: Oh — it just means sports within the school, not against other colleges. Anyone can join, any skill level.
You: Got it. So like casual leagues?
Priya: Exactly. Basketball on Tuesdays, soccer on Thursdays. Are you a sports person?
You: I play badminton, actually. Is there anything for that?
Priya: Hmm, I don’t think so. But the rec center has courts — you can book them. And honestly, you should just ask at the front desk.
You: Okay. What about clubs that aren’t sports? Are there any Chinese student groups?
Priya: There’s the Chinese Students Association — they’re over by the fountain. And there’s an international students group too.
You: Oh nice. How do I sign up?
Priya: You just show up to a meeting. Here, take a flyer — the QR code has the schedule.
You: Thanks. Do I need to pay dues?
Priya: Usually like twenty bucks a semester. Some are free.
You: Twenty bucks, okay. And how often do they meet?
Priya: Once a week, I think. Just scan the code and check.
You: Will do. Thanks for the help.
Priya: No problem. Hey — are you new here? You seem new.
You: That obvious?
Priya: Ha, a little. Welcome. Seriously, just show up to stuff. That’s the whole trick.
|---|---|---|
| Are you interested in…?
| What’s ___ mean? | ……
| Got it. So like…?
| Is there anything for…?
| How do I sign up? | |
| Do I need to pay dues?
| How often do they meet? |
| That obvious? |
| Just show up. | show up = 出席,不用预约 |
1. intramural
2. dues
3. just show up 是很重要的文化提示。
4. You seem new 是友好的搭话方式。
Yeah, I just got here two weeks ago.
Coleman) You(研一,准备选下学期课)
Coleman: Come on in. You’re Wei, right? Have a seat.
You: Thanks for seeing me.
Coleman: Of course. So, what can I help you with?
You: I’m planning next semester and I wanted to make sure I’m on track. Also I have a couple of questions about the requirements.
Coleman: Good. Let’s look at your degree audit. Have you run it yet?
You: Sorry, run what?
Coleman: The degree audit — it’s in the student portal. It shows every requirement and what you’ve completed. Let me pull it up.
You: Oh. I didn’t know that existed.
Coleman: Everyone misses it their first semester. Okay, so you need two more electives and your capstone.
You: Two electives. Any restrictions on which ones?
Coleman: They have to be 500-level or above. And you can’t double-count one you already used for your core.
You: Got it. And what about the capstone — when do people usually take it?
Coleman: Spring of your second year. You’ll need to pick an advisor by October, though.
You: Okay. One more thing — I’m thinking about taking one class Pass/Fail. Is that allowed?
Coleman: For an elective, yes. Not for anything in your core. And you have to declare it by the drop deadline.
You: What’s the drop deadline this semester?
Coleman: November 8th. Miss it and you’re stuck with the grade.
You: November 8th. I’ll put it in my calendar.
Coleman: Good. Anything else?
You: That’s everything. Thanks for your time.
Coleman: Anytime. And come back before registration opens — it fills up fast.

|---|---|---|
| What are the prerequisites? |
| Is this offered every semester? |
| What’s the drop deadline? |
| Can I take this Pass/Fail?
| How many credits is this?
1. degree audit
Front Desk Staff(体育中心前台) You(想用健身房和球场)
You: Hi, I’m a grad student here. Can I use the gym?
Staff: Yep, it’s included in your student fees. Can I see your student ID?
You: Here you go.
Staff: Thanks. You’re all set — just tap in at the turnstile.
You: That’s it? I don’t need to sign up for anything?
Staff: Nope. You’re already in the system. The only thing you’d pay for is a locker or a personal trainer.
You: Okay. What are the hours?
Staff: Six am to eleven on weekdays, eight to eight on weekends.
You: And can I book the badminton courts?
Staff: You can, online, up to three days ahead. Courts go fast in the evening.
You: Good to know. Do I need to bring my own racket?
Staff: We lend them out at the desk, but it’s first come, first served. And we only have a few.
You: Got it. What about the pool?
Staff: Same building, second floor. You need a swim cap, though.
You: A swim cap. Do you sell them here?
Staff: We do, ten bucks at the desk.
You: Perfect. One last thing — is there a fee for group classes?
Staff: Most are free. Yoga and spin are free, but you have to reserve a spot.
You: Great. Thanks a lot.
Staff: No problem. Have a good workout.
|---|---|---|
| It’s included in your student fees. |
| Can I see your student ID? | | |
| You’re all set. |
| Just tap in.
| What are the hours? | | |
| Can I book…? | | |
| Up to three days ahead. | | |
| It’s first come, first served. | | |
| One last thing — |
| Is there a fee for…? | ……
1. You're all set
3. first come, first served
同类还有 walk-ins welcome(不用预约,直接来)。
Sam(同系的美国同学,在迎新会上) You(站在饮料桌旁边,还没跟人搭上话)
Sam: Hey, I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Sam.
You: Wei. Nice to meet you.
Sam: You too. Are you in the program too?
You: Yeah, first year. Just got here two weeks ago.
Sam: Oh, you’re brand new. Where are you from?
You: China — Shanghai. What about you?
Sam: Here, basically. Grew up about an hour away. So what are you studying?
You: Data science. You?
Sam: Same program. Machine learning track.
You: Oh nice, so we’ll have classes together.
Sam: Probably. Fair warning, the stats core is brutal.
You: Everyone keeps saying that. Is it the workload or the material?
Sam: Both. But the study group helps. A few of us meet in the library on Sundays.
You: That sounds great. Could I join?
Sam: Yeah, of course. Let me get your number.
You: Sure. It’s 415-555-0142.
415-555-0142。
Sam: Got it. I’ll add you to the group chat.
You: Thanks. Honestly, I’ve been trying to figure out how to meet people.
Sam: Dude, you’re doing it right now. That’s literally all it takes.
You: Good to know. I’ll keep doing it then.
Sam: Do that. Hey, grab food before it’s gone — the spring rolls go first.

|---|---|---|
My English is poor, please forgive me. | 过度自我贬低,让对方尴尬 | I'm still working on my English. |
Nice to meet you, I am a student from China. | 像背课文 | Wei — I'm from Shanghai. |
Please take care of me.
Can I make friends with you? | 语法对但很生硬 | We should grab lunch sometime. |
What's your salary / age? |
I am very boring. |
You are very handsome. | 对刚认识的人评外貌,越界 | Nice to meet you — cool jacket.(评物不评人) |
1. I don't think we've met
Hi, can I talk to you?
Let me get your number。
Can I have your number?(有点正式)。
4. Dude
Front Desk(学生服务中心工作人员) You(要办事,不太清楚流程)
You: Hi, I’m not sure if this is the right office. I need help with a few things.
Front Desk: You’re in the right place. What do you need?
You: Three things, if that’s okay. First, I need a new student ID — mine stopped working.
Front Desk: Let me see it. Yeah, the strip’s worn. That’s fifteen dollars for a replacement.
You: Okay. Second, I’m trying to get my transcripts sent to my undergrad school.
Front Desk: You order those online through the portal. Takes about five business days.
You: Five business days. Can they send it electronically?
Front Desk: Depends on the receiving school. Some only take paper.
You: I’ll check with them. Third thing — is there a writing center on campus?
Front Desk: There is, second floor of the library. Free for students. You can book a session online.
You: Free? What do they help with?
Front Desk: Papers, essays, resumes, even personal statements. They’ll go through it line by line with you.
You: That’s exactly what I need. Do I bring a printed copy?
Front Desk: Either that or your laptop. And bring the assignment prompt too.
You: Got it. Last question — is there counseling available? I’ve been pretty stressed.
Front Desk: There is, and it’s free and confidential. You can call to set up an appointment, or walk in for urgent stuff.
You: That’s good to know. Thank you — that’s really helpful.
Front Desk: Of course. Here’s your new ID. It’ll activate in about an hour.
You: Perfect. Thanks for walking me through all that.

1. walk me through 是"带我把流程过一遍"。
Could you walk me through the process?(能把流程给我讲一遍吗)。
I need help with a few things,对方心里有数,不会在你问第二件事时急着收尾。然后用 First, … Second, …

I'm Wei. I'm Wei, I'm from Shanghai, I study data science, I just got here
2. I don't think we've met
Could I join?
