|---|---|---|
| 称呼 | 老师 | Professor Ellis(姓在后,绝不能叫 Teacher Ellis) |
Office hours
Professor Ellis(社会学导论教授,四十多岁,说话慢,喜欢学生来问问题) You(大一国际生,第一次去 office hours,站在门口有点紧张)
You: Hi — Professor Ellis? Is this your office hours?
Professor Ellis: It is. Come on in. You’re in my eleven o’clock, right?
You: Yeah, I’m in the Tuesday class. I’m not sure if you know my name — I’m Wei.
Professor Ellis: Wei, sure. Sit down. What can I do for you?
You: I wanted to ask about the first paper. I read the prompt three times and I’m still not sure what you’re asking for.
Professor Ellis: Okay, that’s a fair thing to ask. What’s unclear about it?
💬 Ellis
You: So — you say “analyze a social norm.” Do you want us to describe one, or argue about one?
Professor Ellis: Argue. Description is the setup, not the paper. I want a claim in the first paragraph, and the rest of the paper defending it.
You: Okay. So like — “tipping in the US is a norm that exists mainly to make customers feel generous”?
(laughs) Professor Ellis: That’s a claim. You’d have to defend it, but that’s the shape I want.
You: Okay, that helps a lot. And how long is it supposed to be?
Professor Ellis: Four to five pages, double-spaced. It’s on the prompt. Did you check the prompt?
You: I did. I just wanted to hear it from you.
Professor Ellis: That’s fine. Honestly, half the people who come in here ask me things that are on the prompt. You actually read it. You’d be surprised how low the bar is.
You: Can I ask one more thing — is it okay if my claim is kind of a weird one?
Professor Ellis: Weird is good, as long as you can support it with the readings. If you can’t, it’s just an opinion.
You: Got it. Thanks, Professor Ellis.
Professor Ellis: Sure. And Wei — come back before you hand it in, not after. I’ll look at a draft.
You: Oh — really? You’d do that?
Professor Ellis: That’s what office hours are for.

不要说 Do you remember me?——他多半不记得,场面会尴尬。 I'm in your Tuesday class — I'm Wei.
2. I just wanted to hear it from you 是很得体的实话。
3. That's what office hours are for 是教授的真心话。
Would you look at a draft if I sent it?
You(想跟教授单独聊期中论文选题,office hours 时间跟别的课冲突) Professor Ellis(邮件回得很短,但答应见面)
You: Subject: SOC 101 — request to meet about paper topic
(邮件) You: Hi Professor Ellis, I’m in your Tuesday 11am section. Your office hours conflict with my chem lab, so I can’t make Tuesdays. Would you be available to meet sometime this week or next? I’d like to run my paper topic by you before I start writing. Thanks, Wei Chen.
Professor Ellis: Sure. Thursday 3:15? My office, same building.
You: That works. Thank you — see you Thursday.
Professor Ellis: Wei, come in. So — what’s the topic?
You: So I want to write about how people in the US say “how are you” without actually wanting an answer. Like, it’s a greeting, not a question.
Professor Ellis: Okay. That’s a real norm. What’s your claim, though? Right now that’s an observation.
You: My claim is that the norm exists to avoid imposing on people. Like, you’re not supposed to actually answer honestly.
Professor Ellis: Now that’s a claim. Do you have a reading that backs it up?
💬 Ellis
You: That’s kind of where I’m stuck. I have the Goffman chapter, but I’m not sure it fits.
Professor Ellis: It fits. Look at the section on face-work. That’s exactly what you’re describing — protecting the other person’s face.
You: Oh — I read that part but I didn’t connect it. Can I ask how you’d frame it?
Professor Ellis: I’d say the greeting is a ritual that acknowledges the other person without demanding anything back. But don’t quote me. Put it in your own words.
You: Fair enough. And is four to five pages still right?
Professor Ellis: Still right. It’s still on the prompt.
💬 Ellis
(laughs) You: Right. Okay — thanks for making time, Professor Ellis.
Professor Ellis: No problem. Email me if something else comes up. Short emails, please.
💬 Ellis
You: Short emails. Got it.

| Short emails, please. |
SOC 101 — question about paper、SOC 101 — request to meet。
Hi Professor Ellis, I’m in your Tuesday 11am section. Your office hours conflict with my chem lab — would you be available Thursday or Friday? Thanks, Wei Chen
3. run it by you 是把想法先给对方看看。
Can I run my topic by you? 比 Can you check my topic? 同类说法:bounce an idea off you、get your take on it。
Professor Ellis(你上过他两门课,成绩都是 A-) You(准备申请研究生,需要两到三封推荐信)
You: Professor Ellis, do you have a few minutes? I wanted to ask you something, and it’s not about the class.
Professor Ellis: Sure, sit down. What’s going on?
💬 Ellis
You: I’m applying to grad school for sociology, and I was hoping you’d write me a letter of recommendation.
Professor Ellis: Okay. When’s the deadline?
💬 Ellis
You: The first one’s December first. So about five weeks from now.
Professor Ellis: Good. That’s the right amount of notice. Thanks for not asking me last week.
You: I figured you’d be busy. So — is that a yes?
Professor Ellis: It’s a yes, assuming I have something to say. Which classes did you take with me?
You: Social Theory in the spring, and this one now.
Professor Ellis: Right. You did well on the theory paper. That one on Durkheim.
You: I didn’t think you’d remember that.
Professor Ellis: I remember the papers. What else do you want the letter to cover? Are you applying for a research program, or a coursework master’s?
You: Mostly coursework master’s. But two of them have a thesis option, and that’s what I’m leaning toward.
Professor Ellis: Okay. Send me your CV, your statement of purpose, and the list of schools with deadlines. All in one email.
You: I’ll send it tonight. Do you want a form, or do you upload it yourself?
Professor Ellis: Every school’s different. Some send me a link, some want a PDF. Send me the links and I’ll deal with it.
You: Got it. And — this might be a weird question — is there anything I should do to make the letter easier to write?
Professor Ellis: Yes. Tell me what you want me to emphasize. Students never do that, and then they’re disappointed.
You: Okay. I’ll write that out too. Thank you — this really means a lot.
Professor Ellis: Five weeks is plenty. Don’t worry about it.
💬 Ellis

Please write a recommendation for me. | 直接下指令,没问对方是否愿意 | I was hoping you'd write me a letter of recommendation. |
I am sorry to trouble you. | 过度道歉,把正常请求说成麻烦 | I know you're busy — is this something you'd have time for? |
My English is not good, but please help me.
I will be very grateful forever. | 情感过重,英文推荐信场合不合适 | This would mean a lot to me. |
Can you write it this week? It's urgent. | 把教授的时间当可压缩项 | The deadline is December first — is that enough time? |
I need a strong letter. | need + strong 像在提要求 | Would you be able to write a supportive letter? |
2. Would you be able to write a supportive letter?
I'm not sure I know you well enough——这就是婉拒,你该顺势换人,不要追问。
(I'd love it if you could speak to my paper on Durkheim and my work in the group project),他会省一半时间,信也会具体得多。
Professor Ellis(手里有一个研究项目,带三四个本科生) You(大三,想找研究机会,为读研做准备)
You: Professor Ellis — you mentioned in class that you’re working on a project about tipping. Do you have a minute to talk about it?
Professor Ellis: I do. Sit. You’re the third person this week, so you’re not the only one interested.
You: Oh — is there still room? I don’t want to take someone else’s spot.
Professor Ellis: There’s room for people who actually do the work. What year are you?
💬 Ellis
You: Junior. I’m planning to apply to grad school next fall, so I’m trying to get some research experience before then.
Professor Ellis: Okay, that’s a real reason. What do you know about the project?
You: Honestly, only what you said in class. You’re looking at how people decide the tip amount. But I read your paper from last year — the one on restaurant norms.
Professor Ellis: You read that? Okay, now I’m interested. What did you think of it?
You: I thought the part about servers reading customers was the most interesting. But I wondered if it holds for counter service, where there’s no server.
Professor Ellis: That’s — actually a good question. That’s part of what we’re looking at now.
You: Really? So what would I actually be doing, if I joined?
Professor Ellis: Coding survey responses, mostly. It’s not glamorous. Two hours a week, and we meet Fridays.
You: That’s fine. I’d rather do real work than watch. Is it for credit, or volunteer?
Professor Ellis: Either. You can do it for one credit as a directed reading, or just show up. Most people start without credit.
You: Can I think about it for a day and email you?
Professor Ellis: Sure. But if you’re going to do it, decide by Friday. I need to know who’s in.
You: Fair enough. I’ll email you tomorrow. Thanks, Professor Ellis — I appreciate you taking the time.
Professor Ellis: Mm-hmm. And Wei — read the methods section this time, not just the discussion.

I read your paper from last year
3. What would I actually be doing?
Let me think about it
Professor Ellis(期末论文的截止日期是周五) You(两篇论文撞在同一天,想提前求一个延期)
You: Professor Ellis, I need to ask you something and I’m a little nervous about it.
Professor Ellis: Okay. Sit down and ask.
💬 Ellis
You: The final paper is due Friday, and I have another paper due the same day. I’m not going to be able to do both well. Is there any chance I could have until Monday?
Professor Ellis: Let me look at the syllabus. What does it say about late work?
💬 Ellis
You: No late work without prior approval. That’s why I’m here now and not Friday.
Professor Ellis: Good answer. When did you know about the conflict?
💬 Ellis
You: About two weeks ago. I should have come earlier. That one’s on me.
Professor Ellis: I appreciate you saying that. What’s the other paper for?
💬 Ellis
You: Professor Nakamura’s seminar. Her deadline is fixed — she doesn’t give extensions at all.
Professor Ellis: That’s true, she doesn’t. Okay — here’s what I can do. Monday at five, and that’s it. No more after that.
You: Monday at five. That works. Thank you.
Professor Ellis: And I want the paper to be good, not just done. If you’re turning in something you wrote Friday night in a panic, tell me now and we’ll figure something else out.
You: No — I’ve got the outline and half the draft. I need the weekend to make it actually work.
Professor Ellis: Then Monday’s fine. Which other class?
💬 Ellis
You: Nakamura’s. Why?
💬 你: Nakamura 的。
Professor Ellis: Because if two deadlines are colliding across the department, that’s something we should know about. I’ll mention it at the next faculty meeting. Not about you specifically.
You: Oh. That’d help, honestly.
Professor Ellis: One more thing. Email me today and confirm this in writing, so there’s a record. Verbal agreements don’t survive December.
You: I’ll send it as soon as I get back to my room.
Professor Ellis: Good. And Wei — you did this the right way. Most people wait until Friday night and then email me a story about their grandmother.
You: I don’t have a grandmother story.
Professor Ellis: Good. Keep it that way.
💬 Ellis

My grandmother is sick, so I can't finish. | 编理由;一旦被查实比迟交严重得多 | I have two papers due the same day — is there any flexibility? |
Please give me more time, I beg you. | 哀求语气,美式场景里很突兀 | Is there any chance I could have until Monday? |
I am very busy this week. | 只说忙,没说清冲突在哪 | I have another paper due the same day. |
Can you extend the deadline for me? | 把延期说成给你一个人的特例,教授难答应 | Is there any chance of a short extension? |
Sorry sorry sorry, I know I am wrong. | 过度道歉,重点被淹没 | I should have come earlier — that's on me. |
Thank you, you are so kind. Thank you. |
I have two papers due Friday. Any chance of until Monday? I should have come earlier
Just confirming: final paper by Monday 5pm. Thanks again.
4. That one's on me 是"这是我的责任"。
That was on me.、My bad.(更轻,适合小事)。

Subject: SOC 101 — question about the final paper
Hi Professor Ellis,
I’m in your Tuesday 11am section. I have a question about the final paper.
Thanks, Wei Chen
SOC 101 — request to meet),不写Question、不写Hi。

2. Is this your office hours?
3. I was hoping you'd …
Is there any chance I could have until Monday?
