资助形式包括 TA(助教)、RA(助研)、fellowship(奖学金)、tuition waiver(学费减免)。

Dr. Grimaldi(计算机系副教授,项目面试官,说话不快但一直在记笔记) You(国内本科大四,申请硕士,第一次英文面试)

Dr. Grimaldi: Hi — can you hear me okay?

💬 Grimaldi

You: Yes, loud and clear. Can you hear me?

Dr. Grimaldi: I can. Great. So, thanks for making time — I know it’s late over there.

You: It’s fine, I’m used to it. Thanks for the interview.

Dr. Grimaldi: So, let’s start easy. Tell me a little about yourself and what you’ve been working on.

You: Sure. I’m a senior in computer science at a university in Nanjing. For the last year and a half I’ve been working on a project about how recommendation systems handle new users — the cold-start problem.

Dr. Grimaldi: Okay. What did you actually do on that project?

You: I built the data pipeline, and I ran the comparison experiments. There were three of us, and the modeling part was mostly my teammate’s.

Dr. Grimaldi: Good. I like that you told me what you didn’t do. A lot of applicants don’t.

You: I’d rather be accurate.

Dr. Grimaldi: So what did you learn from that project that you couldn’t have learned in a class?

You: Honestly, that most of the work is cleaning data. And that a result that looks great usually means I made a mistake somewhere.

Dr. Grimaldi: That’s a real answer. Okay — let me pull up your statement. You mentioned you’re interested in fairness in machine learning. Say more about that.

You: Yes. In my project, the model performed much worse for users with very few ratings, and those users were mostly new accounts. That bothered me more than the accuracy numbers did.

Dr. Grimaldi: So it’s a personal interest, not just a topic you read about.

You: Right. I ran into it, and then I went looking for the literature.

Dr. Grimaldi: Good. That’s how it should work. Okay, I’m going to take some notes while you talk — don’t let that throw you off.

You: Go ahead. I’ll keep talking.

Dr. Grimaldi: So — why a master’s, and why now?

You: Two reasons. My undergrad program was strong on theory but I never had to run a large experiment end to end. And I’m not ready to commit to a PhD topic yet — I want two more years of doing research before I decide.

Dr. Grimaldi: That’s an honest answer. Most people say they want a PhD and then change their minds in year one.

You: I didn’t want to say something I’m not sure about.

Dr. Grimaldi: Fair. Okay — anything you want to ask me before we go on?

You: One thing — is this interview the same for the PhD applicants, or is the master’s track different?

Dr. Grimaldi: Different. PhD applicants meet potential advisors separately. For master’s, this is mostly it.

You: Good to know. Thanks.

I am a student who loves computer science very much. I've spent the last year and a half on cold-start recommendation.
I participated in a project about …participated I built the data pipeline and ran the experiments.
I learned a lot from this experience. I learned that most of the work is cleaning data.
My English is not very good, please understand. Let me rephrase that —
I want to study abroad to broaden my horizons. Your program requires a full experiment in year one. I've never done that.
I will study very hard if you admit me. Here's what I've already done, and here's what I want to learn next.

美国学术界极度看重credit(功劳归属)。

3. I'm not sure yet

I'm not ready to commit to a PhD topic yet

I'm going to take some notes

Sorry, my connection dropped — can you repeat that?

Dr. Grimaldi(继续面试,翻到了你的个人陈述第二页) You(准备过这个问题,但发现要答得比想象中具体)

Dr. Grimaldi: Okay, next one. Why our program?

💬 Grimaldi

You: Three reasons, if that’s okay.

Dr. Grimaldi: Sure.

💬 Grimaldi

You: First, the sequence. Your program makes everyone take the experimental methods course in the fall, and that’s exactly the gap in my background.

Dr. Grimaldi: And second?

💬 Grimaldi

You: Second, the size. You take about fifteen students a year, so there’s a real chance of working with a professor instead of just taking classes.

Dr. Grimaldi: Where’d you get the fifteen number?

💬 Grimaldi

You: Your program page. The cohort list is public for the last three years.

Dr. Grimaldi: Good. Most applicants don’t do that. And third?

You: Third — and this is the honest one — Dr. Ramos’s work on fairness metrics. I read two of her papers this summer and I disagreed with part of the second one.

Dr. Grimaldi: Oh. What did you disagree with?

💬 Grimaldi

You: The assumption that the metric transfers across domains. In my project the same metric behaved completely differently on a smaller dataset.

Dr. Grimaldi: Did you email her about it?

💬 Grimaldi

You: I didn’t. I wasn’t confident enough in my results, and honestly I wasn’t sure a cold email from an applicant would be welcome.

Dr. Grimaldi: That’s the right instinct, actually. Read her third paper — she addresses part of that. Then email her.

You: I will. Thank you.

Dr. Grimaldi: One more thing on that. If you’d said “I want to work with Dr. Ramos because her research is very interesting,” I’d have written that down as a nothing answer.

You: So specifics, basically.

Dr. Grimaldi: Specifics. Every time. Okay — here’s the hard question. What if you don’t get to work with her?

You: Then I’d still come. There are two other groups doing evaluation work, and the methods course is the main reason I applied.

Dr. Grimaldi: Good answer. Never let your whole reason be one person.

You: I’ve heard that before, actually.

Dr. Grimaldi: You’ll hear it again. Okay — do you have questions for me?

You: A few, but let me start with the one I care about most. What happens in the first semester for someone with my background?

Dr. Grimaldi: Methods course, one elective, and a research rotation. The rotation is where people either find a lab or find out they need a different one.

You: Can students switch labs after the rotation?

Dr. Grimaldi: They can. It’s not a failure. Two people did it last year.

You: That’s reassuring. Thanks.

Your program page. The list is public.
This is the honest one —
I disagreed with part of the second one.
I wasn’t confident enough in my results.

Your university has a very good reputation. The experimental methods course fills a gap I have.
I want to work with Professor Ramos because her research is interesting. I read two of her papers and disagreed with the assumption in the second.
I have wanted to study here since I was a child. I applied here because of the research rotation in year one.
I will definitely get a PhD after this. I'm not ready to commit to a topic yet.
Can I get in if I don't have research experience? What does the first semester look like for someone with my background?
Your program is my first choice, no matter what. If I don't get to work with her, I'd still come — for these two reasons.

Where'd you get that number?

Never let your whole reason be one person

4. I wasn't confident enough in my results

Dr. Grimaldi(面试官) You(职业规划那题准备的是"想当数据科学家",被一路追问)

Dr. Grimaldi: Let’s talk about after. What do you want to do with this degree?

You: I want to be a data scientist, I think.

Dr. Grimaldi: “I think” is fine. But which kind? There are at least four jobs with that title.

You: That’s fair. I don’t know the four.

Dr. Grimaldi: Product analytics, machine learning engineering, research scientist, and the one where you make dashboards all day. Which one sounds like you?

You: The second one, probably. I like building things that run, more than writing reports about them.

Dr. Grimaldi: So why a master’s and not just three years of work experience?

You: Because I’ve only ever built things at small scale. In my project the dataset was a hundred thousand rows. I don’t know what I don’t know about systems that are a thousand times bigger.

Dr. Grimaldi: That’s a good reason. A lot of applicants just say they want a better job.

You: I mean, I do want a better job. But that’s not why I’d spend two years.

Dr. Grimaldi: Fair. Now — the harder version. What if you finish and can’t get a research job?

You: Then I’d take a job where I can keep building things, and keep the research on the side. I’d rather do that than take a research title at a place that doesn’t ship anything.

Dr. Grimaldi: Okay. And if you decide to do a PhD after this?

💬 Grimaldi

You: Then I’d want to have a real result by then. I don’t think I should apply without one.

Dr. Grimaldi: Good. That’s the answer I was fishing for.

💬 Grimaldi

You: Can I ask why?

Dr. Grimaldi: Because I’ve had students apply to PhD programs with a class project on their CV, and it doesn’t go well. I’d rather know now who’s realistic.

You: That makes sense. Is there anything about my plan that seems off to you?

Dr. Grimaldi: One thing. You said “probably” about machine learning engineering. If that’s the goal, take the systems elective, not the theory one.

You: Noted. Can I ask you a stupid question?

Dr. Grimaldi: Those are usually the useful ones.

💬 Grimaldi

You: How do I know if I’m actually good at research, versus just good at school?

Dr. Grimaldi: Everybody asks that in year one. The answer is: you’ll find out when a project fails twice and you still want to come back on Monday.

You: That’s a better answer than I expected.

Dr. Grimaldi: I’ve had practice. Okay — we’re near time. Anything else?

You: Just one. What’s the next step, and when should I expect to hear?

Dr. Grimaldi: Committee meets in three weeks. You’ll hear either way.

You: Good to know. Thank you for the conversation.

I do want a better job. But that’s not why I’d spend two years.
Keep the research on the side. on the side = 业余兼职做

I want to work in tech 和 I want to be a data scientist

I do want a better job. But that's not why I'd spend two years.

3. I don't know what I don't know 是非常地道的英文表达。

I've hit the limit of what I can teach myself(我已经到了自学能到的上限)。

教授追问 which kind、why not work、what if,是在看你的思路能不能撑住。 That's fair. I don't know the four.

What's the next step, and when should I expect to hear?

Dr. Ramos(面试官之一,做公平性度量,问题很硬) Dr. Grimaldi(另一位面试官,在旁听) You(被问到一个没学过的统计概念)

Dr. Ramos: I want to go deeper on the fairness part. Have you worked with any of the group fairness metrics?

You: I’ve read about them, but I haven’t implemented one myself. I know demographic parity and equalized odds by name.

Dr. Ramos: Okay. Then let’s try something. Suppose a model has equal accuracy across two groups but very different false positive rates. Is that model fair?

You: Um. Can I think out loud for a second?

Dr. Ramos: Please. That’s what I’m interested in.

💬 Ramos

You: Okay. So if the false positive rates are different, then the errors aren’t landing on people equally. Even if the overall number looks the same. So — no, I don’t think that’s fair, but I’d need to know which definition we agreed on first.

Dr. Ramos: And why does the definition matter?

💬 Ramos

You: Because different definitions can’t all be satisfied at once. I remember reading that. I can’t prove it to you right now.

Dr. Ramos: Do you remember what it’s called?

💬 Ramos

You: No. I know I read it and I know it surprised me, but I don’t have the name.

Dr. Ramos: It has a name. It’s fine that you don’t have it.

💬 Ramos

Dr. Grimaldi: Can I jump in for a second? I want to point out what just happened there.

You: Sure.

Dr. Grimaldi: You said “I don’t know” three times, and you also gave us a real answer. That’s the combination we look for.

You: I was worried it looked bad.

Dr. Grimaldi: Making something up looks bad. This doesn’t.

💬 Grimaldi

Dr. Ramos: What I’d suggest is that you read up on the impossibility results before you come. Not for the interview — for you.

You: I’ll do that. Can I write down the term?

Dr. Ramos: Of course. I’ll put it in the chat.

💬 Ramos

You: Thank you. And — can I ask what you’d want a first-year student to have read before joining your group?

Dr. Ramos: Two survey papers. I’ll send them too. Read the second one first — it’s shorter and it’s meaner.

You: “Meaner”?

Dr. Ramos: It argues that most published fairness results don’t replicate. It’s a good antidote to enthusiasm.

You: Okay. I’ll read it this week and email you what I think.

Dr. Ramos: Good. One more thing — if you email me, be specific. Don’t send me “I found it very interesting.”

You: Understood. Something I disagree with, ideally.

Dr. Ramos: Exactly.

💬 Ramos

Dr. Grimaldi: Okay — I think that’s a good place to stop. Thanks for the time.

You: Thank you both. This was the most interesting hour I’ve had all month.

Have you worked with …?
I’ve read about them, but I haven’t implemented one.
Can I think out loud for a second?
That’s what I’m interested in.
That’s fair, but I’d need to know the definition first.
I can’t prove it to you right now.
I know I read it and I don’t have the name.
It’s fine that you don’t have it.
Making something up looks bad. This doesn’t.
I’ll read it this week and email you what I think.

I know this, but I forgot how to say it in English. I know the result but not the name — let me describe it.
Sorry, I am not familiar with this field. I've read about it but haven't implemented one. What would you want me to know?
Maybe … I'm not sure …
I think the answer is A, B, and C.
This question is beyond my knowledge. I'm out of my depth here. Can I reason it out loud?
Please forgive my ignorance. Good question — I don't have that memorized.

1. Can I think out loud?

I've read about them, but I haven't implemented one ——

纯说 I don't know 是终点;I don't know, but here's how I'd find out 是起点。

4. I know I read it and it surprised me, but I don't have the name

Read the second one first — it's shorter and it's meaner

Dr. Grimaldi(面试官,时间还剩五分钟) You(准备了三四个问题,最想问的是资助)

Dr. Grimaldi: We’ve got about five minutes. What else do you want to know?

You: I have a few. Can I start with funding?

Dr. Grimaldi: Please do. It’s the question everybody’s afraid to ask and everybody needs answered.

You: So — how does funding work for the master’s program? Is it automatic with admission, or separate?

Dr. Grimaldi: Separate. Master’s students are mostly self-funded in year one. Some get a TA position in year two.

You: And what does a TA position cover?

Dr. Grimaldi: A stipend and part of tuition. Not all of it. And it’s twenty hours a week.

You: Twenty hours on top of coursework — is that realistic?

Dr. Grimaldi: It’s why second-year students take fewer credits. People do it. It’s not easy.

You: Okay. And for the PhD track — that’s funded differently?

Dr. Grimaldi: PhD admits get full funding: tuition plus a stipend, through TA or RA work. That’s standard here.

You: Is that guaranteed for the whole program, or year by year?

Dr. Grimaldi: Usually four years, contingent on progress. Read the offer letter carefully — that’s where it’s spelled out.

You: Good. One more — are there scholarships I should be applying to separately? Like external ones?

Dr. Grimaldi: Yes, and most applicants don’t. Look at national fellowships in your own country too. They’re not competitive here.

You: I’ll look into that. Last thing — if I get an offer with funding from another school, is that something I can mention?

Dr. Grimaldi: You can mention it. Don’t bluff. We talk to each other.

You: Understood. Noted.

Dr. Grimaldi: Anything non-money related?

💬 Grimaldi

You: One. How many students in the program are international, roughly?

Dr. Grimaldi: About half. The bigger issue isn’t the coursework, it’s the writing. Budget more time for that than you think.

You: That’s useful. Anything I should do between now and the fall?

Dr. Grimaldi: Read the two papers I mentioned, and get comfortable writing in English. That’s it. Don’t try to learn everything.

You: Okay. Thank you — this was really helpful.

Dr. Grimaldi: Good luck. You’ll hear from us in three weeks either way.

Is there any money for me? How does funding work for the master's program?
I need scholarship, otherwise I cannot come. Funding is a big factor for me — can you walk me through the options?
Can you give me a full scholarship? Is funding guaranteed for the whole program, or year by year?
My family is poor, so I need support. What are the requirements for a TA position?
How much is the salary?salary 用于正式工作,助教是 stipendWhat's the stipend?
I will not come if there is no money. Funding would be a deciding factor for me.

问的时候要说清你问的是哪个(for the master's program / for the PhD track),否则会得到含糊的答案。

Is that guaranteed for the whole program, or year by year?

Don't bluff. We talk to each other.

Thank you so much! I really enjoyed talking with you! I hope to hear from you soon! Thanks for the conversation. I read the second paper you mentioned — here's the part I'm not sure about.

1. Tell me a little about yourself. 的重音在 a little。

2. Why our program?

3. I don't know 后面必须紧跟内容。

I don't know, but here's how I'd think about it —,语调保持平稳往上接。

4. Fair enough. / That's fair.
