第二,rubric(评分细则)是交作业前必看的东西。
Nadia(写作中心辅导老师,研究生,桌上有个"25 min"的牌子) You(社会学课论文,第二稿,还有三天截止)
Nadia: Hi, come on in. So — what are we working on today?
You: It’s a paper for my sociology class. It’s due Friday, and I don’t think the argument works.
Nadia: Okay. Do you have the assignment prompt with you?
You: Yeah, it’s on my laptop. Do you need to see it?
Nadia: Always. And read me the part that tells you what they’re grading.
You: Um … “Your paper should make a clear argument, use at least four sources, and address one counterargument.”
Nadia: Okay. Did you address a counterargument?
You: I have a paragraph about it, but it’s short.
Nadia: That’s one of the graded items. Let’s come back to it. First — read me your thesis out loud.
You: “Social media has changed how teenagers form friendships in many ways.”
Nadia: What would someone have to believe to disagree with that?
You: I mean … nothing. Nobody would disagree.
Nadia: Right. So it’s not an argument. It’s a topic.
Nadia: Everybody writes one of those in their first year. Now — what do you actually think?
You: That it’s mostly bad for close friendships, but people are scared to say that because it sounds old-fashioned.
Nadia: Write that down. That’s your thesis.
You: But that’s just my opinion. Isn’t a paper supposed to be objective?
Nadia: An academic paper is an argument, not a summary. You take a position and defend it with evidence.
You: Okay. And the counterargument paragraph — how long should that be?
Nadia: Long enough that a reader who disagrees feels you understood them. Half a page, usually.
Nadia: Then that’s your weekend. Another thing — where does your evidence come from?
You: Two journal articles, a news article, and a survey report.
Nadia: Good mix. Are you citing them properly?
You: That’s actually my other question. I don’t know which style to use.
Nadia: What does the prompt say?
You: It says “cite your sources.” It doesn’t say how.
Nadia: Then ask your professor. Don’t guess — that’s a point deduction waiting to happen.
You: Okay. Can I book another session for Thursday, after I rewrite?
Nadia: Yes, and book early — Thursday slots go first. Bring the new thesis and the counterargument.
Nadia: That’s the whole job. See you Thursday.

Social media has changed how teenagers form friendships What would someone have to believe to disagree?
Dr. Feldman(社会学教授,桌上摊着打印出来的你的稿子,上面全是圈注) You(带着稿子和写作中心的建议来的)
You: Hi, Dr. Feldman. Is this still a good time?
Dr. Feldman: Yep, come in. I’ve got your draft here. Sit down — I want to walk through it.
You: Okay. How bad is it?
Dr. Feldman: Not bad. That’s the frustrating part — the writing’s clear. The argument is the problem.
You: That’s what the writing center said too. Can I record this? I don’t want to forget it.
Dr. Feldman: Sure, go ahead. Okay — page one. You say social media weakens friendships. Then what?
You: Then I give three studies that show it.
Dr. Feldman: And what do those studies actually show?
💬 Feldman
You: That heavy users report feeling lonelier.
Dr. Feldman: Right. Loneliness. Not weaker friendships. Those are two different claims.
You: Oh. So I proved something related but not the thing I said.
Dr. Feldman: That’s a very common move, and it’s the single most expensive one in this class. Your evidence has to match your claim exactly.
You: How do I fix it? Change the thesis or change the evidence?
Dr. Feldman: Your call. Narrow the thesis to loneliness and the evidence works. Keep the big thesis and you need different evidence.
You: I think the loneliness version is honest. I don’t have evidence for the bigger claim.
Dr. Feldman: Good instinct. Now — the counterargument. Where is it?
💬 Feldman
You: Page four. It’s short.
Dr. Feldman: It’s a paragraph. Why so short?
💬 Feldman
You: Honestly? Because I don’t believe the other side.
Dr. Feldman: That’s exactly why it needs to be longer. If you can’t state their best case, you haven’t beaten it. You’ve just avoided it.
You: Okay, that’s fair. What’s the strongest version of the other side?
Dr. Feldman: That online contact is a substitute for people who had no access before — rural kids, kids who don’t fit in at school. For them the comparison isn’t “online vs. in person.” It’s “online vs. nothing.”
You: That’s a better argument than mine.
Dr. Feldman: Then engage with it. You can still disagree — but now you have to say why it doesn’t hold for everyone.
You: Okay. Last thing — the prompt says cite your sources but doesn’t say which style. Which do you want?
Dr. Feldman: Good question, and I should have said. Use APA in this class. Author, year, in parentheses.
You: And the page at the end is called “References,” right?
Dr. Feldman: References in APA, Works Cited in MLA. Don’t mix them. I see that about ten times a semester.
Dr. Feldman: Clean. And put a short note at the top saying what you changed.
Dr. Feldman: It’s the part that teaches you the most. See you Thursday.
💬 Feldman

Can I record this?
Heavy users feel lonelier
英文里有个说法叫 steelmanning(把对方的论点锻造成最强的钢铁版本),正好跟 straw man(稻草人)相反。
Which citation style do you want for this assignment?
| Chicago | 历史、部分人文 | Bibliography(或 Notes) |
5. Wow, I did not expect homework about my homework
But okay.
Nadia(写作中心辅导老师) You(第三次来,这次专门问引用格式)
You: I have a dumb question. Maybe two.
Nadia: Those are my favorite kind. Go.
You: I have three papers due this month, and two of them use different citation styles. How do I keep them straight?
Nadia: Which three classes?
You: Sociology, an English lit seminar, and a history course.
Nadia: So APA, MLA, and Chicago. That’s the whole zoo in one month.
You: And I keep mixing up the in-text citations.
Nadia: Show me what you wrote.
You: For sociology I wrote “Smith, 2019, p. 44.” And in the lit paper I wrote “Smith 44.”
Nadia: Both correct. Do you know why they’re different?
You: Because one’s APA and one’s MLA. But I don’t know the logic.
Nadia: The logic is what the reader needs to find the source. APA is about how recent; MLA is about where in the text.
You: So APA always includes the year?
Nadia: Always. Even when you mention the author in the sentence.
You: Wait — I wrote “According to Smith, loneliness increased.” and then no citation at all.
Nadia: That’s a common mistake. Naming the author doesn’t replace the citation. In APA it’d be “According to Smith (2019), loneliness increased.”
You: Okay, that one I’ll fix. What about quoting?
Nadia: Quote means quotation marks plus a page number. Paraphrase means your own words plus a citation. Both need the source.
You: And if I change three words out of a sentence?
Nadia: Still a paraphrase at best. Changing words doesn’t change whose idea it is.
Nadia: Everybody does. Rule of thumb: if you had to look it up, cite it. Even if you rewrote it completely.
You: What about my own idea from another paper I wrote?
Nadia: Self-plagiarism is real. Reusing your own work without saying so counts as academic dishonesty here.
Nadia: I know. It surprises a lot of international students. Just cite yourself like you’d cite anyone.
You: Okay. Last one — what if I can’t find the page number because it’s an online source?
Nadia: Then you cite what you have. Section heading, paragraph number, or just the year. Don’t make up a page number.
You: Right. Can I send you my reference list to check?
Nadia: Yes — and bring it to a session instead. It’s faster to fix with you here.
You: Book it. Same time next week?
Nadia: Same time next week.

According to Smith, loneliness increased.
3. self-plagiarism(自我抄袭)在美国是明确的学术不诚信。
As I argued in my earlier paper (Li, 2025), …
If you had to look it up, cite it.
Nadia(写作中心辅导老师) You(课程论文投到了系里的学生期刊,收到两条审稿意见)
You: Okay, I got the reviews back, and I don’t know how to feel about them.
Nadia: Read me the first one.
You: “The argument is clear and the literature review is adequate. However, the sample size is too small to support the claims in section three.”
Nadia: That’s a good review. Specific and fixable.
You: It doesn’t feel good.
Nadia: Reviews never feel good. That’s not what they’re for. What’s the second one?
You: “The author appears unfamiliar with the recent work of Chen and Okafor, which directly addresses this question.”
Nadia: Ouch. Have you read them?
You: No. I’ve never heard of them. That’s the part that worries me — what if my whole paper is already done?
Nadia: Then you find out now instead of at a conference. That’s a gift.
You: That’s a generous way to look at it.
Nadia: It’s the accurate way. Okay — how are you going to respond?
You: Respond? I thought I just fixed it and resubmitted.
Nadia: You write a response letter. Point by point. Every comment gets an answer.
You: What if I disagree with a comment?
Nadia: Then you say so, and you explain why. Politely. Reviewers are wrong sometimes.
You: But isn’t it risky to argue with a reviewer?
Nadia: Not if you’re specific. “We respectfully disagree because our sample was drawn differently” is fine. “The reviewer misunderstood” is not.
You: Okay. So for the sample size one — do I collect more data?
Nadia: Can you?
You: Probably not before the deadline. It took me two months to get the first batch.
Nadia: Then the honest response is to narrow the claim. Say what the data supports, and say what it can’t.
You: That feels like admitting defeat.
Nadia: It’s the opposite. Overclaiming is what gets papers rejected. Underclaiming and being clear about limits is what gets them accepted.
You: Okay. And Chen and Okafor — I should read them.
Nadia: Read them, then either cite them or explain how your work differs. Both are acceptable. Ignoring them is not.
You: Can I draft the response letter and bring it here?
Nadia: Yes. Draft it, and mark the two places where you’re unsure. We’ll work on those.
You: Thank you. This actually feels doable now.
Nadia: That’s usually what happens when you write it down point by point.

The reviewer is wrong. | 太冲,学术交流里不能用 | We respectfully disagree, and here is our reasoning. |
Thank you for your valuable comments, we will improve. Below, we respond to each point. |
We will revise according to your suggestion completely. | 全盘顺从反而显得没主见 | We have addressed this by narrowing the claim in section three. |
I don't know this literature. | 直接认输,且没给方案 | We now cite Chen and Okafor and explain how our design differs. |
Our paper is very innovative. | 自夸没有证据 | Our contribution is the sampling method, which differs from prior work. |
Please accept our paper. | 求情,不是学术沟通 | We hope the revised version addresses the concerns. |
(This is a great paper)对你没有任何帮助。
We respectfully disagree because …
4. overclaiming
要么引用它(cite them),要么说明你的工作跟它有什么不同(explain how your work differs)。
Dr. Feldman(教授,手上是你的第三稿) You(改了两周,想确认方向对不对)
You: Dr. Feldman, I know you have people waiting. Two minutes?
Dr. Feldman: Two minutes. What is it?
💬 Feldman
You: I narrowed the thesis to loneliness and rewrote the counterargument. Is that the right direction?
Dr. Feldman: Let me see. … Okay, this is much better. Page two, this paragraph — that’s the strongest thing you’ve written.
You: The steelman paragraph? That took me four days.
Dr. Feldman: It shows. One thing — you still say “proves” in the conclusion. Change it to “suggests.”
You: Why? Isn’t my data good?
Dr. Feldman: Your data’s fine. But with eighty participants, you suggest. You don’t prove. Using the strong word invites the reader to attack you.
You: That’s the opposite of what I was taught. In Chinese writing we’re encouraged to be confident.
Dr. Feldman: You can be confident about your reasoning and careful about your claims. They’re different things.
You: Okay. So “suggests,” “indicates,” “is consistent with” — those are the hedges?
那"suggests"“indicates"“is consistent with”——这些就是限定词?
Dr. Feldman: Exactly. And don’t overdo it either. If every sentence has “may,” it reads like you don’t believe yourself.
You: Got it. Anything else before I submit?
Dr. Feldman: Formatting. Double-spaced, twelve-point, one-inch margins, page numbers. And your name on it.
You: My name? I put it in the file name.
Dr. Feldman: Put it on the document. I print these. Half the class forgets, and then I’m sorting loose pages.
You: Sorry. I’ll fix that now.
Dr. Feldman: And the reference list — did you check every entry?
You: Twice. The writing center checked it once too.
Dr. Feldman: Good. Oh — one more. The cover note about what you changed. Keep it to five lines.
You: Five lines. Mine’s about fifteen.
Dr. Feldman: Cut it to five. I read those notes standing up.
💬 Feldman
You: Fair enough. Thank you for the two minutes.
Dr. Feldman: It was four. But it was worth it.
💬 Feldman
You: I’ll email it tonight.
Dr. Feldman: Before midnight. I grade in the morning.
💬 Feldman

|---|---|---|
Please check if my paper is OK to submit. | 太笼统,教授只能泛泛回答 | I narrowed the thesis — is that the right direction? |
Our experiment proves that … | 小样本用 prove 是过度主张 | The results suggest that … |
In my opinion, this is correct. | 学术写作里 in my opinion 是弱化表达 | The evidence supports this reading. |
I think my paper has no problems now. | 自评过高 | Is there anything else before I submit? |
My English is limited so the paper may have errors. Did I miss anything in the formatting? |
I will submit it as soon as possible. | as soon as possible 没给具体时间 | I'll email it tonight, before midnight. |
1. hedge(限定词)是学术英语的核心技巧。
suggests、indicates、is consistent with、may、appears to —— 这些词的用途不是示弱,而是把结论限定在数据支持的范围内。
If every sentence has "may," it reads like you don't believe yourself ——
I narrowed the thesis from X to Y, rewrote the counterargument on page 4, and checked all citations. ——
Is that the right direction?

1. Ouch.
2. That's fair. / Fair enough.
3. Got it.
Got it.
4. Anything else before I submit?
