Professor Grant(社会学教授) You(论文被标了疑似抄袭)
Grant: Come in, Wei. Close the door.
You: Thanks for seeing me. Your email said you wanted to talk about my paper.
Grant: I did. Before we start — do you know why you’re here?
You: You flagged two paragraphs. I saw the note.
Grant: That’s right. Paragraph three and paragraph seven.
You: Can I see them side by side with the source?
Grant: Yes. Here — this is your paragraph, and this is the article.
You: …Okay. I see it. The structure is the same.
Grant: The words are different. The sentence order isn’t. That’s why it’s flagged.
You: I did cite the article at the end of the paragraph.
Grant: You did. But a citation at the end tells the reader the whole paragraph is yours.
You: So where should it go?
Grant: At the start of the paraphrased material. Or every sentence if it’s that close.
You: I didn’t know that. That’s on me.
Grant: I believe you. And that’s why we’re having this conversation instead of a formal charge.
You: What happens now?
Grant: Two options. I can grade it as is with a penalty, or you can rewrite those two paragraphs by Friday.
You: I’d rather rewrite them.
Grant: Good choice. And Wei — write them from your notes, not from the article. That’s the real fix.
You: Understood. Thank you for giving me the option.
Grant: One more thing. This stays in my file, not yours. As long as it doesn’t happen again, it goes no further.
You: It won’t.

My English is bad, so I copied the structure. | 借口,且不成立 | I paraphrased too closely. I'll rewrite from my notes. |
Dr. Reyes(学术诚信办公室协调员) You(第二次类似问题,已被正式立案)
Reyes: Thanks for coming in. I’m Dr. Reyes. I coordinate academic integrity cases.
You: Nice to meet you. I got the letter but I wasn’t sure what it meant.
Reyes: It means a faculty member filed a charge. You have the right to respond before anything is decided.
You: What exactly am I accused of?
Reyes: Submitting work that substantially duplicates another student’s. Your classmate’s code and yours are identical.
You: We worked on it together. The professor said we could discuss it.
Reyes: Discussing is allowed. Submitting the same file isn’t. Can you tell me what you did together?
You: We talked through the approach. Then I got stuck on the recursion, and he sent me his file so I could see the structure.
Reyes: And then you submitted it.
You: …I changed the variable names. I thought that was enough.
Reyes: It isn’t. But I want to be clear — I’m not deciding today. I’m gathering facts.
You: What happens next?
Reyes: You have two options. You can accept responsibility, or you can request a hearing.
You: What’s the difference?
Reyes: Accepting usually leads to a lighter sanction. A hearing means a panel decides, and if they find you responsible, it’s often heavier.
You: And if I accept, what sanction are we talking about?
Reyes: For a first offense with no prior record, typically a zero on the assignment and a warning letter.
You: Does it go on my transcript?
Reyes: A warning letter doesn’t. A finding of responsibility after a hearing can.
You: I’d like to accept responsibility. But I want to say something first.
Reyes: Go ahead.
You: I didn’t know that sharing files crossed the line. That’s not an excuse — I should have asked. But I want it on record that I wasn’t trying to cheat.
Reyes: I’ll note that. It matters. People who intend to cheat usually lie about it, and you didn’t.
You: What should I do differently next time?
Reyes: Talk about the approach, never share files. And if you’re stuck, go to office hours. That’s what they’re for.

流程术语要分清:charge(指控)→ meeting(约谈)→ hearing(听证)→ sanction(处分)→ appeal(申诉)。 What does that mean in practice?
Typically a zero on the assignment and a warning letter
Discussing is allowed. Submitting the same file isn't.
Dr. Reyes(协调员,主持流程) Professor Grant(任课教授,提出指控方) Panel Chair(听证小组主席,另一位教授) You
Chair: This is a hearing under the academic integrity policy. Please state your name and program.
You: Wei Zhang, second-year master’s in sociology.
Chair: Professor Grant, please summarize the concern.
Grant: The final paper contains three paragraphs that closely follow a published article without proper attribution at the point of use.
Chair: Wei, do you have a response?
You: I do. I cited the article at the end of each paragraph. I understand now that the citation needs to be at the start of the borrowed material. I didn’t know that.
Grant: That’s accurate. The citations are there. The placement is the issue.
Chair: Did you receive instruction on citation format in this course?
You: We had a session in week two and a handout. I reviewed it afterward. It shows an example, but it doesn’t say where to place the citation within a paragraph.
Chair: Do you have the handout?
You: I do. Page three has the example. It’s at the end of the sentence.
Chair: …That’s a fair point. Professor Grant, do you recall covering this?
Grant: I cover it in lecture, but I’ll be honest — the handout is ambiguous on this.
Chair: Wei, did you intend to present the article’s ideas as your own?
You: No. If I wanted to hide it, I wouldn’t have cited it three times.
Chair: That’s a reasonable inference. What would you like the outcome to be?
You: I’d like the chance to resubmit with correct citations. I’m not asking for no penalty — I’m asking for the penalty to reflect that this was a formatting error, not deception.
Chair: The panel will discuss. We’ll notify you in three business days.
Reyes: The panel found no intent to deceive. The sanction is a warning letter and a required citation workshop.
You: Not a zero on the paper?
Reyes: No. Your documentation made the difference. Most students don’t bring the handout.
You: I almost didn’t.
Reyes: Bring the evidence. Always.

| No intent to deceive. |
Did you intend to present it as your own?
Most students don't bring the handout 是实话。
I'm not asking for no penalty — I'm asking for the penalty to reflect…
Dr. Reyes(协调员) You(对处分结果有异议)
You: I got the letter. A zero on the assignment and a notation on my record.
Reyes: That’s right. Do you have questions about it?
You: Yes. The panel last semester found no intent. Why is this one different?
Reyes: Different case, different panel. And this one involved a shared file, which is treated more seriously.
You: Can I appeal?
Reyes: You can. You have ten business days from the date of the letter.
You: What are the grounds for an appeal?
Reyes: Three. New evidence, procedural error, or a sanction disproportionate to the violation.
You: Which one applies to me?
Reyes: I can’t tell you that. That’s your call. But I’ll tell you what an appeal is not.
You: Go ahead.
Reyes: It’s not a second hearing. You can’t just disagree with the outcome. You need one of those three grounds.
You: I don’t have new evidence. It’s the proportionality one.
Reyes: Then your argument is about the pattern. You were found not responsible last semester for a similar mistake.
You: Exactly. And this time I also cited the source, just in the wrong place.
Reyes: That’s a legitimate argument. Write it in one page. Attach the earlier decision.
You: What are my chances?
Reyes: I don’t give odds. But I’ll say this — appeals that are specific and documented do better than appeals that are emotional.
You: Understood. If the appeal fails, does the notation stay?
Reyes: Yes. But it can be expunged after graduation if there are no further violations.
You: That’s good to know. I’ll write it this week.
Reyes: One last thing. Don’t write it angry. Write it factual.

I want to appeal because it's unfair. | 没给出三条理由之一 | My grounds are proportionality — the earlier case was treated differently. |
This is discrimination against international students. | 重指控,需要有证据 | The earlier similar case was found not responsible. |
Please give me another chance. | 哀求,不是申诉 | I'm requesting review on the grounds of proportionality. |
I will appeal everywhere. | 无效威胁 | What are the grounds and the deadline? |
Ten business days from the date of the letter ——
Emma(同组同学) Professor Grant(任课教授) You
Emma: So are we allowed to look at each other’s code or not?
You: I’m honestly not sure. The syllabus says “collaboration encouraged.”
Emma: Which is vague. Let’s ask him.
You: Agreed. Better to ask now than get flagged later.
Grant: Come in. What’s up?
Emma: We have a question about the group assignment. How much can we share?
Grant: Good question. Thank you for asking it before the fact.
You: So — can we look at each other’s code?
Grant: You can discuss the approach. You can debug together. You cannot copy lines.
Emma: What about one person writing the function and the other using it?
Grant: Not allowed. Each of you writes your own. Identical functions will be flagged automatically.
You: The system checks automatically?
Grant: Every submission is compared against every other. It’s not personal.
Emma: So even if we wrote it together, it flags.
Grant: Correct. And “we wrote it together” is not a defense under the policy.
You: Then what’s the safe way to work together?
Grant: Whiteboard. Talk through the logic, erase it, then go home and write it separately.
Emma: That’s actually useful. Can we do that?
Grant: That’s the recommended way. It’s also how it works in industry — you discuss design, you write your own code.
You: What about sharing test cases?
Grant: Test cases are fine. They’re not the deliverable.
Emma: So: whiteboard yes, test cases yes, code no.
Grant: That’s exactly it. Write that down.
You: I will. Thanks for clarifying.
Grant: This is the conversation I wish every group had. Most don’t, and then someone gets a letter.

| You can discuss the approach. | | |
| You can debug together. | | |
| You cannot copy lines. | | |
| Identical functions will be flagged. | | |

| Whiteboard, then write separately. |
| Test cases are fine. | | |
| Write that down. |
Thank you for asking before the fact ——
每份提交都会互相比对,It's not personal。
