Serve for five, then switch,或者干脆一人发五个;打几分也随口定,First to eleven 和 First to twenty-one 都有人玩。擦网(net ball)多数人知道要重发,更常见的说法是 Let — take it again。 How do you guys play?

You(同事,路过看到球桌有人打) Ben(同事,球技一般但热情) Priya(另一个同事,打得不错)

You: Oh hey — you guys playing a game, or just hitting?

Ben: Just messing around. You wanna get in?

You: Yeah, if that’s cool. Can I get in?

Priya: For sure. Grab a paddle — there’s a couple in the drawer.

You: These two? Man, this one’s beat up.

Ben: Yeah, that’s the office paddle. Nobody knows where it came from.

You: You any good? I should ask before I embarrass myself.

Ben: I’m okay. I’m just not, you know, good.

You: Same here. I played some ping-pong back in school.

Priya: Nice. I play at a bar near my place on Tuesdays.

You: Wait, a bar has a ping-pong table?

Priya: A bunch of them do now. It’s a whole thing.

You: How do you guys play? I don’t wanna assume anything.

Ben: Nothing serious. We’re not training for the Olympics.

Priya: Two serves each, first to eleven. Nothing serious.

Ben: Or twenty-one, if we’re feeling old-school.

Priya: We are not feeling old-school.

Sam: Hey — is this open to anybody, or is it a department thing?

Ben: Anybody. Grab a paddle, Sam.

Sam: Oh, I’m in. I haven’t played since college.

You guys playing a game? 想加入先问,比 Can I play? 自然
Just messing around.
Grab a paddle.
How do you guys play?
Two serves each.

1. You any good? 省略了 Do。

口语里 Do you…? 的 Do 经常整个省掉,同类还有 You coming?(你来吗)、You good?(你没事吧)、You need a paddle?(你要拍子吗)。

Wanna hit before we head out?。

You(刚加入,先熟悉节奏) Ben(同事,球技一般但热情) Priya(另一个同事,打得不错) Sam(路过加入)

You: Okay, whose serve first?

Priya: You’re new, so you serve.

You: I thought the guest gets a break, not the ball.

Priya: No breaks in here. Serve for five, then switch.

Ben: Wait, five? I thought we were doing two each.

Priya: We were. Then we got lazy. Five’s easier to count.

Sam: What are we playing to, eleven or twenty-one?

Priya: Eleven. And you gotta win by two.

Sam: Okay, that I remember. Deuce if it’s ten-all, right?

Priya: Yep. Then somebody’s gotta win two in a row.

You: Got it. So no calling it at eleven-ten.

Ben: Rules lawyer over here. Just serve.

You: All right, all right. Nice serve coming up.

Priya: That was not a nice serve. That went into the wall.

Ben: Seven-five. Your serve.

You: Wait, seven-five? I thought it was six-four.

Ben: Wait, what’s the score?

Priya: Seven-five. You missed one while you were talking.

Ben: Seven-five. Okay, for real this time.

Sam: Should we keep serving five, or switch to two?

Priya: Five. Keep it simple. Your serve, Ben.

How many scores now?score What's the score?
You serve first, then I serve first. Serve for five, then switch.
Let's play a match of table tennis. Wanna play a game?
Please use my racket. Here, use my paddle.
The score is 11 same 11. It's eleven-all.
We must win two balls. You gotta win by two points.

You gotta win by two 读起来比 You have to win by two 自然得多,美式口语里几乎不用 have to 说这种提醒。 We gotta go、I gotta run。

两边同分说 ten-all、five-all,这个 all 就是"都是”。

You(球技还行,主张和气) Ben(同事,球技一般但热情) Priya(另一个同事,打得不错)

You: Oh — did that hit the edge?

Priya: I think it caught the edge. I heard it.

You: It sounded weird. Like it hit the side, not the top.

Ben: I didn’t hear anything.

Priya: If it’s the side, that’s my point anyway.

You: Okay, call it. I’ll take your word.

Priya: Edge ball. Eight-six.

Ben: Fair enough. That was too close to tell.

You: Can we just take it again? It’s a casual game.

Priya: No, take the point. I don’t wanna win on a maybe.

You: Okay. Your serve, then.

Priya: Wait — let. The ball clipped the net on my toss.

Ben: That’s a let, right? Do it again?

Priya: Yeah, a let on the serve. It doesn’t count.

Ben: See, I learned something. Nobody ever explained that to me.

You: Me neither. I always just replayed it and hoped nobody noticed.

Priya: Ha. Okay. Here comes the same serve.

You: Oh, that one’s off the table. Way out.

Priya: Yeah, that was out. My bad.

Ben: Eight-six, still your serve.

Did that hit the edge?
Call it.
Edge ball.
Fair enough.
That’s a let.

Take it again.

Did that hit the edge?,再给台阶 I could be wrong.,最后收尾 Fair enough.。千万不要用 You're wrong 或 That's not fair,办公室球桌上一句话就能把气氛搞僵。

You(自己的拍子在包里,没拿出来) Priya(打得不错,拍子是自己的) Ben(用的办公室公用拍) Sam(刚打完一局,在边上喝水)

Priya: Nice shot. You’ve got a decent topspin for somebody who “played in school.”

You: Thanks. I played a lot as a kid, then stopped for years.

Priya: It comes back fast — your wrist still remembers. And your paddle’s got a lot of spin on it. What kind of rubber is that?

You: Just a cheap one. It’s not the rubber, it’s the wrist.

Ben: Mine’s basically a cutting board, so I always blame the paddle.

Priya: Here, use mine for a game. See if it’s the paddle or me.

You: Deal. That’s a bet I don’t mind losing.

Priya: Oh, wow. This one’s dead. The ball just slides off it.

Ben: I know. That’s the office paddle. It lives in a drawer.

You: Okay, that’s way better. It’s got way more control.

Priya: And the topspin sits down faster. That’s the paddle, not me.

You: Okay, you win. It’s the paddle.

Priya: It’s also twenty bucks. Ben’s is free and it shows.

Ben: Hey. Free is a feature.

Sam: Is it my turn yet? I just wanna hit the ball.

Ben: Yep. Two serves each, first to eleven.

Sam: That’s a lot of rules for an office.

Ben: Then you’re gonna love this table.

Your paddle’s got a lot of spin.
I can hit topspin.
I can’t do a chop to save my life. to save my life = 完全不会
What kind of rubber is that?
This thing is dead.

1. to save my life 是"死活也做不到"。

I can't chop to save my life I can't dance to save my life.

2. dead

This ball's dead, grab a new one.

You(打到 10 平,手感正好) Ben(同事,前半段落后,后半段追上了) Priya(在旁边看,帮着报分) Sam(刚打了一局,先下场喝水)

Priya: Okay, ten-all. This is deuce — you gotta win by two. No more one-point games.

You: Not forever. Somebody’s gonna get tired, and it’s gonna be me.

Ben: Whose serve?

Priya: Yours. And it’s match point for him.

You: Yeah. If I win this one, we’re done.

Ben: Great. No pressure. Just my whole afternoon.

You: Come on, serve it. I’m not gonna hand it to you.

Ben: Okay. Here we go.

来了。

Priya: Oh — that clipped the net.

Ben: Was that a let?

Priya: Yeah, that’s a let. Match point again, same serve.

You: Oh, that caught the edge. I heard it. That’s it — good game.

Ben: What? No way. Did it really?

You: It did. I could be wrong, but I’m not.

Ben: Fair enough. Good game, man. You got me.

Priya: Good game, both of you. Now I want the winner.

You: Ha. Give me five minutes and a water.

Ben: Same time Monday?

You: I’m in. I’ll bring my own paddle.

I lost, you are too strong. Good game. You got me.
Edge ball.
The ball hit the net, so we play again. Net ball! / That's a let.
I am the winner, you are the loser. Good game.
Please give me one more chance. One more?
Your ball is very spin.spin Your serve's got a lot of spin.

2. Good game

篮球说 Good game 或 Good run,乒乓球、羽毛球、网球直接说 Good game。

1. What's the score?

What's the SCORE?

3. Good game
