加州、俄勒冈这些地方夏天常禁明火(fire ban),火只能在指定的火圈(fire ring)里生,走的时候必须浇到"摸上去是凉的"(doused and cold to the touch)。
Dana(朋友,露营老手) You
You: Hey, are you still up for camping this weekend?
Dana: Yeah, but we need to book like now. Where were you thinking?
You: I was thinking Big Basin. It’s like an hour and a half from here.
Dana: Let me check. …Yeah, that’s totally booked. Nothing for Saturday.
You: Seriously? On a Tuesday?
Dana: Dude, summer weekends fill up four months out. You have to book in like February.
You: Okay, so what are our options?
Dana: First-come sites, or BLM land. BLM is free and you can camp pretty much anywhere.
You: BLM?
💬 你: BLM?
Dana: Bureau of Land Management. It’s public land. No reservation, no fee, no amenities.
You: No bathroom?
Dana: No bathroom. You dig a hole. That’s the deal.
You: Hmm. Let me think about the hole part.
Dana: Ha. There’s also a state park two hours south that had openings last I looked.
You: Two hours is fine. Let’s do that.
Dana: Cool. I’ll book it — it’s eighteen a night. Send me twenty for your half.
You: Sending now. Do I need to bring anything special?
Dana: Your own sleeping bag and a headlamp. I’ve got the tent, stove, and the bear canister.
You: Bear canister. That’s not a joke, right?
Dana: Not a joke. It’s black bear country. Food never goes in the tent.

Are you up for a hike? 比 Do you want to 更随意,朋友之间更常听到。
2. BLM land
Bureau of Land Management
3. bear canister
Dana(朋友,老手) You(第一次搭这种帐篷) Ranger(巡护员,路过)
Dana: Alright, this is us. Site fourteen.
You: It’s bigger than I expected. Is that the fire ring?
Dana: Yep. Fire only in there. Nowhere else, not even a little one.
You: Got it. Where do we put the tent?
Dana: Flat spot, away from the fire, and not under that dead branch.
You: The dead branch matters?
Dana: Called widowmakers. They fall at night. Ask me how I know.
You: Okay, moving.
Dana: Here, I’ll show you the poles. This one goes corner to corner.
You: Corner to corner. Like an X?
像个 X?
Dana: Exactly. Then the rainfly clips on top. It never rains here in July, but bring it anyway.
You: Why bring it if it never rains?
Dana: Because “never” in the mountains means “not yet.”
Ranger: Evening. Just checking fire permits. You folks got one?
Dana: We do. It’s on the post.
Ranger: Great. Fire’s allowed tonight, but it has to be out by ten.
You: Out by ten. Does that mean doused?
Ranger: Doused, stirred, and cold to the touch. If you can hold your hand on it, it’s out.
You: Got it. Cold to the touch.
Ranger: And your food’s in the locker, right? Not in the tent.
Dana: All of it. Even the toothbrush.
Ranger: Good. Have a good night, folks.

|---|---|---|
Can I make fire here? | 语法不自然 | Are we allowed to have a fire here? |
The fire is finished. | 意思模糊 | The fire's out — cold to the touch. |
Put the food in tent. |
Thank you, sir. |
Is it dangerous? | 太笼统 | Anything I should watch out for? |
1. widowmaker
Doused, stirred, and cold to the touch
3. ask me how I know 是很地道的幽默。
Dana(朋友) You
Dana: You want to do the fire or the food? Pick one.
You: I’ll do the fire. I’ve never started one without lighter fluid.
Dana: No lighter fluid. That’s cheating and it tastes like gas.
You: Okay. So what do I do?
Dana: Small stuff first. Twigs, then pencil-size, then the big pieces.
You: And leave space? I always smother it.
Dana: Yes. It needs air. Think teepee, not log cabin.
You: Teepee. Got it. …There we go.
……着了。
Dana: Nice. Now don’t put the big log on for ten minutes.
You: Why?
Dana: Because you’ll kill it. Let the coals build.
You: Fine. I’ll wait. What’s for dinner?
Dana: Foil packets. Sausage, potatoes, onions, butter. Throw it in the coals.
You: That’s it? No pan?
Dana: No pan. That’s why it’s the best camping food. Cleanup is throwing away foil.
You: You’re a genius.
Dana: I’m a lazy person who camps a lot. Same thing.
You: What do we do with the scraps?
Dana: Bear locker. Every scrap. And wash your hands before you get in the tent.
You: Even the wrapper?
Dana: Even the wrapper. A wrapper smells like food to a bear.

|---|---|---|
I will use alcohol to start fire. | 多数营地禁止 | I'll do it with twigs and kindling. |
The fire is too small, add more wood. | 直接下结论 | Should I add the big log yet? |
Where is trash can? | 多数营地没有垃圾桶 | Do we pack the trash out? |
It's delicious! |
Let's leave the rest for animals. |
1. kindling / tinder / twigs
美国营地普遍没有垃圾桶(no trash service),规则是 pack it out。
Dana(朋友) You
You: Dana. Dana, wake up.
Dana: Mm. What.
You: There’s something outside.
Dana: …Where.
You: Over by the locker. It sounds big.
Dana: Okay. Don’t move. Don’t turn on the light.
别动。
You: Why not the light?
Dana: Because you don’t want it looking at us. Just listen.
You: It’s rattling the locker.
Dana: That’s good. That means it can’t get in.
You: How long do we wait?
Dana: Until it leaves. Could be ten minutes. Could be an hour.
You: I’m not going to sleep.
Dana: Neither am I. But we stay put.
Dana: I think it’s gone. Listen — nothing.
You: Should we look?
Dana: No. Stay in until it’s light.
You: What was it, do you think?
Dana: Bear, probably. Or a raccoon that’s way too confident.
You: That’s supposed to make me feel better?
Dana: In the morning it’ll be a great story. Right now it’s just a bad night.
Dana: See? Locker’s got claw marks. But nothing got in.
You: So the canister thing is real.
Dana: Told you. That’s why nobody sleeps with snacks.

Let's go out and see. | 熊区里极其危险 | Stay in until it's light. |
Turn on the flashlight! | 会吸引动物注意 | Don't turn on the light. |
I will shout to scare it.
We should run. |
It's nothing, go back to sleep. | 轻视风险 | Stay put and listen. |
Don't move, don't turn on the light
3. stay put
Dana(朋友) Ranger(巡护员,例行检查) You
Dana: First thing — walk the site. Anything that wasn’t here when we got here.
You: Like what?
Dana: Bottle caps, twist ties, that piece of foil that blew away last night.
You: I didn’t even see it blow away.
Dana: Nobody ever does. That’s why you walk the site.
You: Found it. Under the rock.
Dana: Nice. Now the fire. Feel it.
You: Cold. Already cold.
Dana: Good. Last thing people forget is the fire.
(Ranger 过来)
Ranger: Morning. How’d the night go?
You: We had a visitor around two.
Ranger: Big or small?
Dana: Big. Went for the locker, got nothing.
Ranger: Good. That’s what the locker’s for. You check out at eleven?
Dana: Yeah. Anything we should know?
Ranger: Just make sure the site looks like nobody was here. That’s the whole standard.
You: Leave no trace.
Ranger: Exactly. Have a safe drive.
(Ranger 走后)
You: That was the best two days I’ve had in a while.
Dana: Same. You did good for a first timer.
You: I almost slept with a granola bar in my pocket.
Dana: Ha! And that’s how you get a bear in your tent. Now you know.

1. Leave No Trace
七条原则里最常被引用的是 pack it out(垃圾全部带走)和 leave what you find(不带走石头、植物)。
3. first timer
You did good for a first timer 同类还有 rookie(新手,稍调侃)、newbie。
