Associate(体育用品店店员) You
You: Hi, I need to get a fishing license. First time.
Associate: Sure. Resident or non-resident?
You: I’ve lived here about a year. Does that count as resident?
Associate: Yeah, a year’s plenty. You got a driver’s license with this address?
You: I do. Here.
给你。
Associate: Perfect. One-year or a short-term? We’ve got one-day and ten-day too.
You: How much is the one-year?
Associate: Fifty-two. The ten-day’s twenty-two.
You: I’ll do the year. I think I’m going to go a lot.
Associate: Smart. Now — freshwater, saltwater, or both?
You: Sorry, does that matter?
Associate: It does. Freshwater’s lakes and rivers. Saltwater’s ocean and bay. Separate stamps.
You: Freshwater, then. I’m going to the American River.
Associate: Then you’re set. Also — you want a sturgeon report card or a salmon card?
You: What’s a report card?
Associate: Some species you have to report every fish you keep. Salmon and sturgeon are two of them.
You: I don’t think I’ll catch those. Skip it.
Associate: Fair. Here’s your license and the regulations booklet.
You: Do I need to read all of this?
Associate: Not all of it. But read the limits for wherever you’re fishing. That’s what gets people fined.

I want to buy fishing permission. | 英文里叫 license,不叫 permission | I need a fishing license. |
Can I fish without license? | 问法很可疑,等于问能不能违法 | Do I need a license for this river? |
How much money? | 太直 | How much is the one-year? |
I don't understand anything. What's the difference? |
Is it okay to fish anywhere? | 危险问题 | Where can I fish around here? |
That's what gets people fined
Ron(邻居,钓了四十年) You(刚买了证)
Ron: Morning. That’s a new rod.
You: Yeah, just got it. I finally got my license.
Ron: Good for you. Where you headed?
You: That’s kind of what I wanted to ask you. I have no idea where to go.
Ron: Ha. Honest answer. What are you after?
You: Trout, I guess? That’s what people talk about around here.
Ron: Trout’s a good start. River or lake?
You: I don’t know the difference. Which is easier?
Ron: Lake’s easier. River’s more fun. Current makes you think.
You: Then lake, to start.
Ron: Folsom’s fine. Nothing special, but you’ll catch something.
You: Do you fish there a lot?
Ron: Used to. I’ve got my spots now.
You: Oh — sorry, is that a rude question?
Ron: Ha, no. Nobody’s going to hand you their spot, but asking isn’t rude.
You: Good to know. What should I ask instead?
Ron: Ask what to use. Flies, lures, bait. That’s not a secret.
You: Okay. What should I use this time of year?
Ron: PowerBait off the bottom. Garlic. Trout go crazy for it.
You: PowerBait off the bottom. I’ll get some.
Ron: And read the limits for Folsom before you go. Five fish, and they have to be twelve inches.
You: Twelve inches. What if it’s smaller?
Ron: Then it goes back. Gently, wet hands, don’t touch the gills.

Tell me your best spot. | 直接要钓点,很失礼 | Any general areas you'd recommend? |
Where do you catch the most fish? | 太直白 | What should I use this time of year? |
I don't know anything, please teach me. | 让对方负担很重 | Which is easier, river or lake? |
Can I keep small fish? | 等于问能不能违规 | What's the size limit here? |
Give me your secret. | 太直接 | What's not a secret to ask about? |
What should I use?、What's working right now?,而不是 Where exactly?。
2. Any luck?
wet hands, don't touch the gills
Ron(邻居,带你来) Warden(渔警,过来查证) You
Ron: Alright. See that point? That’s where the bottom drops off.
You: Where the water changes color?
Ron: Exactly. Trout sit on the edge of that. Cast past it and let it sink.
You: Cast past it. How far?
Ron: As far as you can without making a mess. Watch me.
You: Okay. …That went sideways.
Ron: Everybody’s first cast goes sideways. Reel in, try again. Don’t force it.
You: Second one’s better.
Ron: There you go. Now — leave it. Watch the line, not the water.
You: Why the line?
Ron: Because the line tells you first. It’ll twitch before you feel anything.
You: Something’s on it! What do I do?
Ron: Don’t jerk it. Lift the rod, keep the line tight, reel steady.
You: It’s pulling!
Ron: Let it run. That’s what the drag’s for. Just don’t give it slack.
You: I got one! Is it big enough?
Ron: Let me see. …Fourteen inches. That’s a keeper. Nice fish.
You: How do you measure it?
Ron: Nose to the fork of the tail. Not the tips.
Warden: Morning. License with you?
You: Right here.
Warden: Thanks. Anything in the cooler?
You: One trout. Fourteen inches.
Warden: Can I take a look? …That’s fine. Nice one. Have a good one.
Ron: See? That’s all it is. Be legal, be polite, you’re fine.

| Nose to the fork of the tail. |
| Be legal, be polite, you’re fine. |
2. keeper
反义是 short(不够尺寸)。That's a short one — it goes back 是常听到的话。
Ron(邻居) You
Ron: So what are you doing with it? Eat it or let it go?
You: I was thinking eat it. Is that weird?
Ron: Not weird at all. Half the guys out here release everything.
You: Why release if you’re not going to eat it?
Ron: Because it’s the fight, not the fish. That’s catch and release.
You: Okay. So if I keep it, what do I do?
Ron: Kill it quick — hit it on the head. Don’t let it suffocate in the cooler.
You: On the head. Then what?
Ron: Gut it now, or keep it cold and do it at home. Ice is the important part.
You: I don’t know how to gut a fish.
Ron: Then keep it on ice and look it up. It’s on YouTube. Ten minutes.
You: Fair enough. Are there rules about cleaning it here?
Ron: Not at the lake. But don’t leave the guts on the bank — that’s a fine.
You: Where do they go?
Ron: Trash bag, or deep water. Most guys do the trash bag.
You: Got it. Hey — thanks for bringing me out.
Ron: You earned it. You listened, you didn’t lose your temper when you snagged.
You: I wanted to.
Ron: Ha. That’s the part you don’t say out loud. Same time next month?
You: I’m in.

I will take it home and kill it. | 听着很残忍,且不人道 | I'll keep it on ice and clean it at home. |
Throw the guts in the water. | 部分水域禁止,且不礼貌 | Trash bag or deep water — most guys use a bag. |
Can I fish and release all day? | 可以,但说法要准 | Is catch and release okay here? |
The fish is too small, but I want to keep it. | 等于说要违规 | It's short — it goes back. |
Thank you for teaching me, I learned a lot. | 太长太正式 | Thanks for bringing me out. |
1. catch and release
Kill it quick
3. that's the part you don't say out loud
Bill(六十多岁的常客,每周来三次) You(第一次自己来)
You: Morning. Any luck?
Bill: Not yet. They’re not moving until the sun’s on the water.
You: Good to know. Mind if I set up here?
Bill: Go ahead. You’re far enough back. That’s the polite distance.
You: There’s a polite distance?
Bill: About thirty feet. Closer than that and you’re fishing my water.
You: Oh. Sorry — I’ll move back a bit.
Bill: You’re fine. You asked first, which is more than most.
You: What are you using?
Bill: Nightcrawler on a sliding sinker. Old fashioned, but it works.
You: I’ve got PowerBait. Is that okay here?
Bill: It’s legal. Some guys turn their nose up at it.
You: Why?
Bill: They think it’s cheating because the fish hold onto it longer.
You: So it works better.
Bill: Ha. That’s one way to look at it. I don’t care what you use, as long as you’re legal.
You: Fair enough. Do you come here a lot?
Bill: Three mornings a week. Forty years now.
You: Forty years at the same spot?
Bill: Same rock. My wife says it’s a religion. She’s not wrong.
You: I get it. It’s quiet.
Bill: That’s the whole point. The fish are a bonus.
You: …Line’s moving.
Bill: Then stop talking and set the hook.

2. Any luck?
问 What are you using? Where exactly did you catch it?
