当天先 ceremony(仪式,一般二三十分钟),然后 cocktail hour(酒会,新人去拍照,宾客先喝酒吃小食),再进 reception(婚宴)。
Megan(同事,美国人,也收到了请柬) You(中国人,第一次收到美式婚礼请柬) Ashley(伴娘,新娘 Emily 的闺蜜)
Megan: Oh hey, you got yours too? Emily’s invite.
You: Yeah, came yesterday. Okay, dumb question — what does “RSVP by August 20th” mean exactly? I know it’s “reply,” but reply what?
Megan: It means tell her if you’re coming. There’s a card in there — you write your name, check yes or no, mail it back. Or just do it on the website.
You: And if I just… don’t?
Megan: Then she’s gotta chase you down. She’s paying per plate, so the headcount actually matters. It’s not optional.
You: Got it. Okay, so yours says “and guest.” Mine just says my name.
Megan: Yeah — and they count seats. If you show up with an extra person, somebody’s eating standing up.
You: So no girlfriend. Can I at least ask Emily?
Megan: Don’t ask the bride. She’s got a million things going on. Ask Ashley — she’s the maid of honor, she’s got the headcount. And ask early, ‘cause if somebody drops out, a seat might open up.
You: Okay. I’ll text Ashley tonight.
Megan: Good. And hey — don’t overthink it. It’s a party, not a test.
You: Hey Ashley — quick question about Emily’s wedding, no pressure. My invite’s just for me, right?
Ashley: Hey! Yeah, just you, sorry. We’re kinda tight on seats at the venue.
You: No worries at all, I figured. Just didn’t wanna assume.
Ashley: Thank you for asking instead of just showing up with somebody. You have no idea.
You: Ha, I’ve heard stories. So I just mail the card back?
Ashley: Yep — check “accepts with pleasure,” write your name, get it in before the 20th. Online’s faster if you have the link.
You: “Accepts with pleasure.” That’s fancy.
Ashley: It’s the standard wording, it kills me. Oh — no plus one, but you’re at table 7 with Megan, so you won’t be bored.
You: Perfect. Thanks, Ashley. Tell Emily I said congrats.
|---|---|---|
| RSVP by August 20th.
| Can I bring my girlfriend? |
| We’re kinda tight on seats. |
| I figured. No worries. |
We have reserved 2 seats in your honor,那才是两个位子。
Megan(同事,美国朋友,懂规矩) You(中国人,习惯包红包)
Megan: So. Gift. You figure out what you’re getting them?
You: That’s what I wanted to ask you. In China we just put cash in a red envelope. Is that weird here?
Megan: Not weird at all. Cash is totally fine. But first — check the registry.
You: The what?
Megan: Registry. They make a list of stuff they actually want, and you buy off that list. Amazon, Target, Crate & Barrel, wherever.
You: They pick their own gifts? That’s kind of genius, honestly.
Megan: Sounds weird if you didn’t grow up with it, but yeah — you don’t gotta guess, and they don’t end up with three toasters.
You: Okay. Where do I find it?
Megan: Wedding website. Or just ask — “Are they registered anywhere?” Nobody thinks that’s rude. Also, a few of us from work are going in on the big one — the stand mixer. It’s like three hundred bucks.
或者直接问——“Are they registered anywhere?”
You: Oh, I’m in. What’s my share?
Megan: Forty each if six of us. Way better than a forty-dollar whatever on my own.
You: For sure. And do I bring it to the wedding? ‘Cause that box is huge.
Megan: No, no. Registry stuff ships straight to their place. You don’t wanna be the person carrying a stand mixer into a reception.
You: Okay, good. What if I’d rather just do cash?
Megan: Then put it in an actual card — not a bare envelope — and drop it in the card box at the reception. That’s the move.
You: Card box, got it. And how much is normal? I never know.
Megan: For a friend, like fifty to a hundred a person. Not a rule, just the range.
You: That helps. Oh — they put a honeymoon fund on the site. Same thing as cash?
Megan: Pretty much. You chip in online and they spend it on the trip. Some couples do that instead of a registry, some do both.
You: Easy. Mixer plus the fund. Done.

Tyler(新郎,You 的朋友,请 You 当 best man) You(第一次当伴郎)
Tyler: Okay, so — you’re my best man. You know that means you gotta give a speech, right?
You: Yeah. I’ve been kinda… not thinking about it.
Tyler: That’s what I figured. It’s fine. Thirty seconds to two minutes, that’s it.
You: Two minutes doesn’t sound bad till I’m standing in front of a hundred people.
Tyler: Ha. Here’s the structure — say hi, thank the hosts, say something about me, something about Emily, one story, then the toast.
You: “Something about Emily.” I’ve met her like four times.
Tyler: Four times is plenty. Say she’s the first person who ever called me out on my crap and I actually listened.
You: Okay, that I can work with. What kind of story?
Tyler: Something small and real. Not the bachelor party. My mom’s gonna be in the room.
You: Yeah, that was my other worry.
Tyler: No exes, no drunk stories, no inside jokes only three people get. If my grandma wouldn’t laugh, cut it.
You: Got it. Small, real, grandma-safe.
Tyler: And don’t roast me the whole time. Everybody does that and it gets old.
You: Fair. How do I end it — do I just say cheers?
Tyler: You say, “I’d like to propose a toast,” everybody raises a glass, then “To Emily and Tyler.”
💬 泰勒: 你说 “I’d like to propose a toast”,大家举杯,然后 “To Emily and Tyler”。
You: And everybody goes…
Tyler: “To Emily and Tyler!” And clink. That’s the whole thing.
💬 泰勒: “To Emily and Tyler!”
You: Okay. I’m gonna write it out and read it out loud like ten times.
Tyler: Read it out loud, yeah. It sounds fine in your head and then you get up there and it’s mush. Send me a draft.
You: I’ll send it to your brother first.
Tyler: Good call. He’s brutal.
|---|---|---|
| I’d like to propose a toast. |
| To the bride and groom! |
| To Emily and Tyler!
| Cheers! |
| I’d like to thank the parents… |
| Keep it short. |
| Tell one story. |
| Read it out loud. |
1. 致辞顺序:best man 先讲,maid of honor 后讲。
Ashley(伴娘,maid of honor) You(Emily 的朋友,也在帮忙)
You: So how’s maid-of-honor life?
Ashley: Oh my god. Nobody warns you.
You: That bad?
Ashley: It’s not bad, it’s just — everybody thinks you stand there holding flowers. I’m doing like four jobs.
You: Like what?
Ashley: Bridal shower, that’s a whole party. Bachelorette, that’s another whole party. And I’m the one collecting money for both.
You: Oh. That sounds like herding cats.
Ashley: It literally is. Half the girls Venmo me and the other half say “I’ll get you at the wedding,” and then I gotta remember.
You: Do the other bridesmaids help?
Ashley: They help. But somebody’s gotta be the one deciding, and that’s me.
You: What’s a bridal shower, exactly? I’ve never been to one.
Ashley: Daytime thing — brunch, games, presents. Kind of a family-and-friends party for the bride. Way lower key than the wedding. And the bachelorette’s the going-out one — dinner, a bar, a hotel room if we’re being fancy. Emily wants low key, so it’s a nice dinner and a rooftop bar.
You: Do you have to give a toast too?
Ashley: Yeah, at the reception, right after the best man. I’ve been working on it for a month.
You: A month?
Ashley: I don’t wanna cry in front of a hundred people, and I don’t wanna be boring. So. A month.
You: Respect. What else do you gotta do the day of?
Ashley: Hold the bouquet, fix her train, keep tissues on me, sign the paperwork as a witness, and keep her mom and her aunt from yelling at the venue people.
You: That last one sounds like the hardest part.
Ashley: It is. That’s the actual job. Everything else is just standing there looking nice.

Megan(同事,和你同桌) You(宾客) Emily(新娘) Tyler(新郎)
Megan: Okay, we clean up okay.
You: You look amazing. Seriously.
Megan: Thanks. You too. Oh — open bar, by the way.
You: Nice. Actually free, though? I went to one last year that was a cash bar and I had zero cash on me.
Megan: Free. Just tip the bartender a couple bucks a drink.
You: Good to know. So when do I go say hi to Emily — now or after?
Megan: After. There’s a cocktail hour right after the ceremony. That’s when everybody gets a minute with her.
You: Got it. Hey, dumb question. In China we’d hand over cash in a red envelope at the door, and somebody writes down your name and the amount.
Megan: They write it down?
You: Yeah. And when you get married, you give back the same amount. It’s kind of a ledger.
Megan: That is so much pressure. Here it’s — you give a gift, cash or off the registry, and nobody keeps score.
You: Emily! Oh my god, you look beautiful.
Emily: Thank you! I’m so glad you made it. I’m gonna cry again — don’t.
You: I’ll wait. And thank you for having me — this place is gorgeous. Oh, and congratulations. Congrats on the wedding, seriously.
Emily: Thank you. Go eat something, you look hungry.
(walking over) Tyler: Hey! There he is.
You: Hey man. You clean up nice.
Tyler: Ha, thanks. Hey — did you eat yet? They clear the plates fast.
You: On it. Also, I put a card in the box — heads up, it’s cash. Not a vase.
Tyler: Best possible answer — it’s going straight into the honeymoon fund. Okay, first dance is in ten, go sit down.
|---|---|---|
| Congratulations!
| Congrats on the wedding. |
| You look beautiful. |
| You look stunning.
| You clean up nice. |
| Thank you for having us.
| Wishing you two all the best. |
和 Congrats on the wedding 对新人都能用。

2. Congratulations!
