You never do the dishes,要说 I've been doing the dishes a lot lately. Could we split it?
I'll Venmo you for half. Can we figure out something that works for both of us?
You(中国人,刚搬进来,第一次在美国合租) Marcus(室友,美国人,夜猫子,话多) Ashley(另一个室友,美国人,爱干净,说话直) Landlord(房东,来签租约、交钥匙)
Marcus: Oh hey, you made it! I’m Marcus. Welcome to the chaos.
You: Hey, nice to meet you. I’m still kinda processing all these boxes.
Marcus: Yeah, no rush. Grab a lemonade — there’s some in the fridge.
Ashley: Hi, I’m Ashley. I live in the room at the end of the hall.
You: Hi Ashley. So it’s the three of us, plus the landlord shows up at four?
Ashley: Yep. He’s gonna walk us through the lease and hand over the keys.
Landlord: Hi folks. Sorry I’m late — traffic was a mess. Let’s just knock this out.
Landlord: First thing — rent’s nine hundred each. It’s due on the first.
You: Sorry, due on the first — does that mean I pay it that morning?
Landlord: Pay it on the first, not after. There’s a fifty-dollar fee if it’s late.
Ashley: Can we set up auto-pay? I did that at my last place and never thought about it again.
Landlord: Please do. I hate chasing people for rent. Now — the deposit.
You: Is that first and last month’s rent, or…?
Landlord: No, it’s a security deposit — eight hundred each. It sits in an account. If nothing’s damaged when you move out, you get it back.
Landlord: Okay, utilities — water, gas, electric, internet. You three split those three ways.
Marcus: Even when I’m out of town half the month?
Landlord: That’s between you. I just need one name on the accounts. But read the lease before you sign — the pet rule is in there.
Marcus: Oh, we can have a dog, right?
Landlord: No pets, sorry. That’s the building, not me.
You: Noted. Kind of a bummer, but good thing I asked.
Landlord: I’ve seen too many roommates fight over stuff nobody ever wrote down. Talk it out now.
Ashley: Anyway, since we’re already here — can we do the house stuff now, while it’s all fresh?
Marcus: Like what?
You: Guest rules. If I want someone to stay over, do I just say it, or do we ask first?
Ashley: Ask first, honestly. Not permission — just a heads-up. I don’t wanna walk out in a towel and find a stranger on the couch.
Marcus: That’s fair. I’ll do the same.
You: And shared stuff — toilet paper, soap, paper towels. Who buys it?
Marcus: Whoever notices first. Then just put it in Splitwise and we settle up.
You: Deal. Last one — dishes. Are we washing as we go, or is a sink full of stuff normal here?
Ashley: Let’s say the sink’s empty by the end of the night. That’s my one thing.

|---|---|---|
I want to ask a question about money. | 太正式,像开会 | Quick question about rent. |
You must tell me before you bring people. | must 像下命令,室友关系里很刺耳 | Can we give each other a heads-up first? |
How much is the deposit? I need to prepare. | prepare 用错场景 | What's the deposit, and is it refundable? |
We are three people, so pay three. | 语法和意思都糊 | We split it three ways. |
I don't want to talk about money, it's awkward. | 中式客气,美式合租里反而埋雷 | Can we just get it all on the table now? |
Please remember to pay. | 像上级提醒下级 | Can we set up auto-pay so nobody has to remember? |
Just a heads-up, my mom's visiting Saturday.
2. split it three ways / split it down the middle。
三个人分说 three ways,两个人对半分成 split it down the middle 或 split it fifty-fifty。
3. 房东说的 knock this out 是"赶紧办完"。
knock out 在口语里是"一口气搞定",类似 knock out a paper(赶完一篇论文)。
You(负责收账单的那个) Marcus(室友,在家办公,电脑一天开到晚) Ashley(室友,出差多,用得少)
You: Okay, so — the bill. It’s up about forty bucks from last month.
Marcus: Forty? For real?
You: Yeah. Electric and internet. The internet jumped the most.
Ashley: Mine’s the same as always. I’m barely here — I was in Denver two weeks.
Marcus: Okay, that might be me. I’ve been on video calls all day for work.
Ashley: I mean, work calls aren’t really a fun extra. You gotta work.
You: Right, so — utilities is one bill, and I think we just split it even. Three ways.
Marcus: Even if one person’s using way more? That feels kinda off.
Ashley: Honestly, tracking who used what is more work than the money’s worth. We’re talking like ten bucks.
You: That’s fair. Let’s split it even, but if one month is crazy — like double — we talk about it.
Marcus: Works for me. So what do I owe you for this month?
You: A hundred and twelve. I already paid it, so you can just Venmo me.
Marcus: Cool. Oh wait — half? It’s three of us. My bad, a third. I’ll Venmo you a third tonight.
You: No worries. And can we put the due date on the calendar? I don’t wanna be the guy nagging every month.
Ashley: Yes. First of the month, auto-pay.
Marcus: The problem is remembering. Can one of you just text me?
Ashley: Dude. You’re a grown man. Set a reminder.
You: Yeah, what she said. That way nobody has to nag anybody.
Marcus: Yeah, yeah. Okay, reminder’s set. And hey, you know what? If I ever forget, just say something. Don’t sit on it.
You: Oh, I will. That’s the whole point of living with people, right?

| I’ll Venmo you for half.
| Split it down the middle. |
| Split it three ways. |

| That feels kinda off.
| More work than the money’s worth. |
split it down the middle 是两人对半;三个人说 three ways;按实际用量算叫 prorate it。
I'll Venmo you.(我转你)Just Venmo me.(你转我就行)Put it in Splitwise.(记到 Splitwise 里)——这三个说法在美国年轻人里是日常,不需要解释。
Hey, the bill's due Friday 比 You always forget to pay My bad, sending it now.,这就够了。
You(已经洗了三天,快憋不住) Marcus(做饭多,洗碗少) Ashley(爱干净,但不想当妈)
Marcus: Morning. Coffee’s still hot if you want some.
You: Thanks. Hey, um — can I bring something up?
Marcus: Yeah, what’s up?
You: So, the sink. I’ve been doing the dishes a lot lately. Could we split it?
Marcus: Oh. Yeah, I didn’t realize it was bugging you.
You: It’s not a huge deal, honestly. It’s just — three days in a row is a lot.
Marcus: That’s fair. I do cook a lot, so I guess most of it’s mine. My bad.
You: I’m not trying to keep score. I just don’t wanna be the only one washing ’em.
Ashley: Can I jump in? I’ll do it too, but I hate not knowing whose turn it is.
Marcus: So let’s just make a schedule. Like a chore chart, but not lame.
Ashley: A chart’s fine. I just don’t wanna be the one nagging everybody.
You: Same. So what if we take turns? Every third day.
Marcus: Wait, every third day is basically every other day for me, right? ‘Cause I cook.
Ashley: That’s not how math works. It’s every third day for each of us.
Marcus: Okay, okay. Can I take weekends off? I’m never even here.
You: Fine by me, but then you’re on trash duty. Deal?
Marcus: Deal. And what counts as “done”? ‘Cause I’ll do the plates and leave the pans.
You: Everything in the sink. Pans included. Whatever’s in there. Empty by the end of the night.
Marcus: Even if I’m out late?
Ashley: Then it’s yours the next morning. Let’s just say that out loud so nobody’s guessing.
Marcus: Fine. Ash, can you put it on the fridge? You’re the only one who remembers anything.
Ashley: Already on it.

|---|---|---|
You never do the dishes. | 审判人品,对方立刻防御 | I've been doing the dishes a lot lately. Could we split it? |
Why are you so lazy? | 人身攻击,关系直接崩 | The sink's been full for three days — can we figure out a schedule? |
You should wash the dishes. | should 像长辈说教 | Could you take the dishes tonight? |
I am very angry about this. | 情绪直接砸过去,美式沟通里偏重 | I'm starting to get frustrated about the sink. |
Let's make a rule. | rule 听起来像管人 | Can we just agree on a schedule? |
I helped you a lot. | 变成讨人情 | I've been covering it — can we split it going forward? |
1. I've been doing… lately
I've been doing the dishes a lot lately
Could we split it?、Could you take tonight?、Can we make a schedule?——
3. My bad.
室友说 My bad 的时候,回 No worries 或 All good 就好,不要追着讲道理。
You(明天早上六点的早班) Marcus(夜猫子,打游戏开语音) Ashley(被吵醒过一次,站在你这边)
You: Hey, Marcus? You got a sec?
💬 你: 嘿,Marcus?
Marcus: Yeah, one sec — okay, I’m dead. What’s up?
You: I don’t wanna be that guy, but I could hear it through the wall until two.
Marcus: Oh. Was I loud?
You: Yeah. Not the game — your voice. You were calling stuff out.
Marcus: Oh man. I didn’t even notice. I get loud when I’m playing with my squad.
You: I’ve got an early shift tomorrow — could you keep it down after midnight?
Marcus: Yeah, for sure. What time do you go to bed?
You: Like ten-thirty on work nights. I’m up at five-thirty.
Marcus: Ouch. Okay, so after midnight I’ll put on headphones.
You: Headphones would help, but honestly it’s your voice more than the game.
Marcus: Right, right. So headphones plus keep the door shut?
You: That’d be great. And the yelling is the main thing.
Marcus: Got it. Sorry, dude. I really didn’t know it carried that much.
Ashley: For what it’s worth, I heard it too. I just didn’t wanna make it a thing.
Marcus: Okay, two against one. Message received.
You: I’m not asking you to stop gaming. Just after midnight on work nights.
Marcus: No, that’s fair. You’re up at five-thirty, I’m a night owl — you know, we just live on different clocks.
Ashley: Different clocks is fine. It’s the yelling that isn’t.
Marcus: Fair enough. Headphones on after midnight, door closed. If it slips, just text me.
You: I will. Thanks for not making this weird.
Marcus: Nah, you came at me straight. That’s better than letting it build up. Night, man.

|---|---|---|
You are so loud. | 评价人,不是描述事 | I could hear it through the wall until two. |
Please be quiet. | 像老师管学生,太笼统 | Could you keep it down after midnight on work nights? |
You woke me up again! | 指责 + again 火上浇油 | I got woken up around one last night. |
Don't play games at night. | 一刀切禁止,室友不会答应 | I'm not asking you to stop — just after midnight. |
I can't sleep because of you. | because of you 太冲 | I've got an early shift, so I need the noise down after midnight. |
You should wear headphones. | should 像命令 | Would headphones work for you? |
I could hear it through the wall until two 和 You're so loud 的效果差十倍。
I'm not asking you to stop gaming
Thanks for not making this weird 或 Appreciate it 收场,千万别再补一句"上次也是这样"——翻旧账会让刚谈成的共识当场作废。
You(女朋友 Jenna 要从芝加哥过来) Marcus(女朋友周末常来,从没正式问过) Ashley(希望家里有外人时提前知道)
You: Oh hey, by the way — before I forget. Can I run something by you guys?
Marcus: Shoot.
You: My girlfriend’s coming in from Chicago Friday. Would you mind if she stays over?
Ashley: Friday only, or the whole weekend?
You: Friday and Saturday. She flies back Sunday morning.
Ashley: I’m good with that. I’ve got no early plans.
Marcus: Yeah, totally fine. Does she need a parking spot? ‘Cause street parking here is a nightmare.
You: Oh, good call. I didn’t even think about that. I’ll tell her.
Marcus: And heads-up, my girlfriend stays over most weekends. Is that still cool?
Ashley: Thank you for actually asking. Honestly, that’s the thing I wanted to talk about.
Marcus: Oh. Uh-oh.
Ashley: Well, nothing bad. It’s just — you know, she’s here basically every weekend now. I just wanna know the pattern.
You: Honestly, I’d like to know too. It’s not about her. The apartment’s just small.
Marcus: Yeah, that’s on me. I should’ve said something, like, weeks ago.
Ashley: Just tell us by Thursday. That’s all I’m asking.
Marcus: Yeah, I can do that. And if it ever gets to be too much, say so.
You: Same goes for me. And I’ll check with both of you, not just whoever’s home.
Ashley: Oh, that’s a good rule. ‘Cause last time you asked me and Marcus had no idea.
Marcus: Dude, I was asleep. But yeah — ask both of us.
You: Deal. Nobody gets surprised in the kitchen at seven in the morning.
Ashley: That’s all I ever wanted.

1. Would you mind if…?
I'm good with that 就是同意,答 This week's kinda rough 就是拒绝——两种都是正常答案,不用追问理由。
I'll check with both of you
Can we figure out something that works for both of us?(我们能不能想个两边都能接受的办法?)

1. Would you mind if…?
Yeah, I kind of do 才是拒绝。
2. I've been doing the dishes a lot lately 的重音落在 a lot 和 lately。
3. Could we split it?
It's due on the FIRST.、A hundred and TWELVE.
5. My bad.
