三条规矩几乎是全国性的:狗出门必须牵绳(keep your dog on a leash);拉了屎必须当场捡(pick up after your dog);到了年纪要绝育(spay 母 / neuter 公)。 Sorry about that.
美国的说法是 adopt, don't shop——想养宠物先去 shelter(市政收容所)或 rescue(民间救助组织)。 Is she good with kids? Is she house-trained?
How much is that gonna run me?
他们用 he / she,把宠物叫 fur baby、my boy、my girl。
Sorry, he's friendly! / pick up after your dog |
| 去收容所领养 | 想养、问流程、问性格 | adopt from a shelter / Is she house-trained? |
He's been throwing up since Monday. |
| 朋友间聊宠物 | 晒猫晒狗、出门托人照看 | pet sitter / He did great with her. |
Is your dog okay? / It's not your fault. |
You(刚到美国一年,养了一只中型混血犬,两岁) Sam(邻居,住同一栋公寓,养了一只老金毛)
Sam: Oh hey! Is that your dog? I’ve seen you two walking around.
You: Yeah, this is him. Sorry — he’s gonna jump, he gets excited.
Sam: You’re fine, I don’t mind. Oh, he’s a big boy. What’s his name?
You: Max. We got him from a rescue in March. He’s two, we think.
Sam: A rescue, nice. Is he friendly?
You: Very. He’s always on a leash, too — we don’t do off-leash.
Sam: Good. Half the people on this block don’t bother, drives me crazy. (laughs) Mine was like that at two. Can I pet him?
You: Yeah, go ahead. He’s good with people.
Sam: Hey buddy. Oh, you’re a sweetheart. Come here.
Sam: So — I gotta ask. Is he fixed?
You: He is, yeah. The rescue did it before we took him home.
Sam: Good. That’s usually the rule at most places. Our lease says it in writing.
Sam: Hey, uh — you got a bag on you?
You: Oh no. Did he go? I didn’t even see.
Sam: Right there by the trash can. No worries, it happens.
You: My bad. I’ve got one, hold on. Sorry — I always pick up, I just missed it.
Sam: You’re good, man. Everybody misses one now and then.
You: Okay. Got it. Sorry about that. And sorry about the jumping.
Sam: Seriously, don’t worry about it. He’s a puppy at heart.
You: That’s a nice way to put it. He’s got a lot of energy.
Sam: Tell me about it. Mine’s eleven now. He just sleeps.
You: Eleven? He looks great. Ours is two and he’s already a handful.
Sam: Vet says he’s fine, just slow. Hey — the dog park on Fifth is pretty quiet on Saturday mornings if you ever wanna come. Nice talking to you.
You: You too. Maybe we’ll see you there.
Sam: Sounds good. See you around.
You: See you. Come on, Max. Let’s go.

You(打算再养一只,偏向小型犬) Rachel(收容所的工作人员) Nina(朋友,自己养猫,陪你一起去)
Rachel: Hi there, how can I help you today?
You: Hi. We’re thinking about adopting. Do we need an appointment, or can we just walk in?
Rachel: You can walk in, but if you want to meet a specific dog, an appointment’s better. Are you looking for anything in particular?
You: Something small. We live in an apartment, so under thirty pounds, ideally.
Rachel: Got it. Do you rent? Because we’ll need the landlord to approve a pet.
You: We do, and we already have one dog, so we’re cleared for pets. They made us pay a pet deposit too — three hundred, non-refundable.
Rachel: That’s pretty standard. Okay — do you wanna meet a few and see who you click with?
Rachel: This is Pepper. She came in about a month ago, she’s around three.
You: Oh, she’s sweet. Can I meet her?
Rachel: Sure, let me get her out. Just go slow, let her come to you.
You: Okay. Hi, girl. Is she house-trained?
Rachel: She is. She was in a foster home for two weeks, so she’s used to a routine.
You: Good. And is she good with other dogs? We’ve got a two-year-old at home.
Rachel: She’s good with calm dogs. She got a little nervous around the big ones here.
Nina: What about kids? My sister brings her twins over all the time.
Rachel: She’s good with kids, yeah. We tested her. Older kids, though — she doesn’t love being grabbed.
You: Makes sense. Is she spayed?
Rachel: She is, and she’s up to date on shots. She’s also microchipped.
You: Okay, so what’s the process from here?
Rachel: You fill out an application, we call your vet, and then we do a home visit. It usually takes about a week.
You: A home visit? For a dog?
Rachel: Just to make sure there’s a fence or a plan. And the adoption fee is two fifty. That covers the spay, the shots, and the chip.
You: That’s less than we paid for the first one. Okay — let’s grab an application.
Rachel: That’s the point. We’d rather you adopt than buy.
Nina: I keep telling her that.

| Is she up to date on shots? |

|---|---|---|
I want to buy a dog from shelter. | shelter 是领养不是买卖 | I want to adopt from a shelter. |
Is she healthy? | 太笼统,工作人员只能回"看着挺好" | Is she up to date on shots? |
She is a girl dog? | 没人这么说 | Is she spayed? |
Can I take her home today? | 美国领养当天几乎不可能带走 | What's the process from here? |
How much money? | 太生硬 | What's the adoption fee? |
She doesn't bite, right? | 问法像质疑 | Is she good with kids? |
1. two fifty
口语报钱常省略 hundred:two fifty = 250,three hundred = 300,a buck = 1 美元。
2. fixed
Is he fixed? She's already fixed.
see who you click with = 看看跟哪只对得上眼。
You(狗从周一开始吐,两天没好好吃东西) Dr. Ellis(兽医) Marcy(前台/护士)
Marcy: Hi, come on in. What’s going on with him today?
You: He’s been throwing up since Monday, and he’s not eating.
Marcy: Okay. Any diarrhea?
You: A little on Monday, nothing since. He’s still drinking, just less than usual.
Marcy: Okay, I’ll note that. Dr. Ellis will be right in.
Dr. Ellis: Hi, I’m Dr. Ellis. So, vomiting since Monday — how many times a day?
You: Four or five times on Monday. Twice yesterday. Today just once, but it was white foam.
Dr. Ellis: Okay, that’s helpful. Any chance he got into something? Trash, chocolate, plants?
You: He got into the trash on Sunday. I thought I caught him in time.
Dr. Ellis: That would explain it. Is he on any medicine right now, or anything for flea and tick?
You: Just the flea and tick stuff, once a month. Nothing else.
Dr. Ellis: Good. And he’s neutered, up to date on shots?
💬 Ellis
You: Yeah, all of it. He had a checkup in March.
(Dr. Ellis
Dr. Ellis: Perfect. Let me examine him. Okay — his belly’s a little tender right here.
You: He flinched. Yeah, that’s where he’s been sensitive.
Dr. Ellis: I wanna run bloodwork and take an X-ray. I don’t think it’s a blockage, but I’d rather know.
You: Okay. How much is that gonna run me?
Dr. Ellis: Around four hundred, all in. If you have pet insurance, most of this is usually covered. You pay up front, they reimburse you later.
You: I don’t have it. Should I get it?
Dr. Ellis: Honestly? Yeah. For a dog his age, it’s worth it.
💬 Ellis
You: Okay, I’ll look into it. Anything I should watch for at home?
Dr. Ellis: If he keeps vomiting past tomorrow, or stops drinking, bring him back. Otherwise, small meals, three times a day. And his bordetella shot is due next month.
You: Got it. And the medicine — how often?
Dr. Ellis: Twice a day with food, for seven days. Finish the whole thing, even if he seems fine. Marcy will get you checked out up front.
You: Okay. Thanks, Dr. Ellis.

| What’s going on with him today? |
| He’s been throwing up since Monday. |
| He’s not eating. He’s off his food. |
| Is he drinking water? |
| He’s kind of flat.
| Any diarrhea? |
| He got into the trash. | get into = 偷吃/翻到 |
| Is he on any medicine? |
| How much is that gonna run me?
| You pay up front, they reimburse you.
| Bring him back if…
| Twice a day with food. |
| Finish the whole thing. |
| Marcy will get you checked out.
|---|---|---|
| 时间 | since Monday / for two days / last night | 一定要给起点 |
| 具体表现 | throwing up white foam / not eating / limping | 别只说 He's sick |
| 频率/程度 | four or five times a day / a little / a lot | 数字比形容词有用 |
He's been throwing up since Monday, four or five times a day, and he's not eating.
We had her spayed. / We had him neutered. / Is he fixed?
2. shot
He's up to date on shots. He needs his rabies shot.
That'll be around four hundred. How much is that gonna run me? Is there a cheaper option?,医生会给你替代方案。
4. flea and tick
Nina(朋友,养了两只猫) You(养狗,跟 Nina 是同事)
Nina: Oh hey. You look tired.
You: My dog woke me up at four. There was a squirrel situation.
Nina: A squirrel situation. I love that. Mine just knock stuff off the counter for fun.
You: That’s a thing? Like, on purpose?
Nina: Oh, totally on purpose. Last week Milo knocked my coffee into my laptop.
You: Oh no. Was the laptop okay?
Nina: Dead. I had to buy a new one. Six hundred bucks because my cat’s an artist.
You: That’s brutal. Did you at least get the data off it?
Nina: Most of it. Anyway, how’s Max doing? He still chewing shoes?
You: Better, actually. We started walking him twice a day and it made a huge difference. He sleeps all afternoon now.
Nina: Yeah, a tired dog is a good dog. That’s what everybody says. So who watches him when you travel? You went to Chicago last month, right?
You: We hired a pet sitter. She came by three times a day. Cats are fine for a weekend — dogs are not.
Nina: Fair. I just have my neighbor feed the cats.
You: Right. Oh — did you hear about the dog park on Fifth?
Nina: The new one? My sister takes her dog there.
You: We went Saturday. Come with us sometime. Not to be rude, but you need to get out more.
Nina: Ha. I’m a cat person. I don’t do the whole dog thing. Standing and talking to strangers? Even worse.
You: There’s no dog thing. You just stand there and talk to people.
You: Fair enough. How’s your other one, the old one?
Nina: He’s okay. He’s on medicine now, so I have to give him a pill every morning.
You: Aww. Poor thing. Does he take it?
Nina: Only in tuna. And not the cheap tuna. My cat eats better than I do.
You: Same. Max gets better food than I do too. He’s basically my fur baby.
Nina: Same. I call mine my kids and I’m not embarrassed about it.
You: No shame. Anyway, let me know if you need a hand with the pill thing.
Nina: Thanks. I might take you up on that.

1. 美国人说宠物用 he / she,不用 it。
Is it a boy or a girl?,然后全程用 he / she。
2. fur baby
朋友之间、社交媒体上很常见,my fur baby my boys my girls 都是爱称。
You(带 Max 第一次来这个狗公园) Dave(另一只狗的主人,混血犬,比 Max 大一圈)
Dave: Hey, is he good with other dogs?
You: Yeah, mostly. He gets a little jumpy when they’re bigger than him.
Dave: Mine’s big but he’s a marshmallow. He’s never started anything.
You: Good to know. Go ahead.
Dave: Oh — hey. Hey! That’s enough. Mine snapped at yours. Grab yours, I’ll get mine.
You: Come here, Max. Come on.
💬 你: 过来,Max。过来。
(Dave
Dave: Okay. Okay, buddy, easy. Sorry about that.
You: Is your dog okay?
Dave: He’s fine, he’s fine. Is yours?
You: He’s fine. He’s shaking a little, but he’s fine.
Dave: I’m really sorry. He’s usually not like that at all.
You: It’s okay. It happens. Do you know what set him off?
Dave: There was a ball. I think yours went for it and mine was already on it.
You: Oh, that’s probably it. Max is a little obsessed with balls.
Dave: So’s mine. It’s a resource thing. The trainer told me not to bring toys in here.
You: Huh. I didn’t know that was a thing.
Dave: Yeah, it’s like the number one cause. Food and toys. Honestly, most of the time it’s the owners, not the dogs.
You: Right. Well — thanks for grabbing him so fast.
Dave: Of course. You too. Sorry again.
You: You’re good. No harm done.
Dave: He’s got a little scratch on his ear, I think. Just keep an eye on it.
You: Will do. Thanks, uh — I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name.
Dave: Dave. And that’s Rufus. Let’s give ’em a few minutes and try again. They’ll probably be fine.
You: I’m Wei. This is Max. Yeah — let’s do that.

Grab yours, I'll get mine. |
Leash him and back up. |
Is your dog okay? |
Let me check him real quick. |
It's okay. It happens. |
Do you know what set him off? |
在狗公园互相指责(Your dog started it!)

1. He's been throwing up 里的 been 要弱读。
读成 /bɪn/,He's been 连起来像 /hiz bɪn/。
Is he fixed?
4. Can I pet him?
5. Aww.
Aww. Poor thing. / Oh no, I'm so sorry.
