Hey, I'm Wei. (How do you know Tyler?) How do you do?、It is my honor to meet you. Nice to meet you.

Mind if I join you?

What do you do? Oh, you work in design? What kind of stuff?——顺着对方刚说的话挖细节。

Let's swap numbers.、Are you on Instagram?、Add me on WeChat if you use it. I'm not really on social media.

Hey, great meeting you last night.

You(中国人,刚搬到这座新城市,第一次来 Tyler 家的派对) Marcus(共同朋友,带你来的) Tyler(聚会主人) Nina(也在派对上,谁也不太认识)

You: Oh hey — I’m Wei. I don’t think we’ve met.

Tyler: Tyler. I live here, so I guess I’m the one hosting this thing. How do you know Marcus?

You: We work together. Same floor, different teams. He dragged me out tonight.

Tyler: Good, glad he did. Grab a drink, make yourself at home.

You: Thanks. I’ll let you keep doing your rounds.

You: Hey, mind if I join you? I’m Wei.

Nina: Go for it. I’m Nina. You’re the third person tonight who’s asked me that exact question.

You: Yeah? So you don’t know people here either?

Nina: Basically nobody. My roommate knows Tyler, so she brought me along and then disappeared.

You: Same situation, different friend. Marcus pointed at the beer and then I lost ’em.

Nina: Classic. So what do you do, Wei?

Wei?

You: I work in logistics. It sounds dull, but I like it. What about you?

Nina: Graphic design. Mostly branding stuff for small companies.

You: Oh cool — so like logos and packaging, that kind of thing?

Nina: Yeah, logos, packaging, websites when the client insists. Someone has to make it all look less ugly.

You: Fair enough. Oh — Marcus is waving at me. I should go say hi.

Nina: Go. I’m not going anywhere. There’s free food involved.

(You 走过去)

Marcus: There you are. Tyler, this is Wei — he just moved here from Shanghai.

Tyler: Oh, nice to meet you. How do you like it here so far?

You: Nice to meet you too. So far so good. Ask me again in January.

Tyler: Ha, that’s everyone’s answer in January. Anyway, I gotta go restock the cooler.

Hey, I’m Wei — I don’t think we’ve met.
How do you know Tyler?
Nice to meet you. How do you do?
I’ll let you keep doing your rounds.
Mind if I join you?

1. I don't think we've met 比 Nice to meet you 更好用。

2. How do you know Tyler? How do you know the bride?、How long have you been coming to this gym?

I gotta go restock the cooler I'll let you keep doing your rounds

You(还在派对上) Nina(平面设计师) Marcus(路过) Priya(另一个客人)

Nina: So how long have you been in the city?

You: About three weeks. Honestly, I still get lost on the subway.

Nina: Oh, that’s normal. I’ve been here four years and I still do that.

You: That makes me feel better. Where were you before?

Nina: Chicago. Came out here for a job and just kind of stayed.

You: Oh, you work in design, right? What kind of stuff do you actually do?

Nina: Mostly branding — a company comes in with a logo from 2009, and I make it not look like 2009 anymore.

You: So you’re the one who decides whether it’s gonna be a serif or not.

Nina: No way, you know design terms?

You: Barely. I read a lot of random stuff online.

Nina: Honestly, same. I fell down a rabbit hole about subway maps last week. Did you know the colors aren’t random?

You: I did not know that. Okay, tell me.

(Marcus

Marcus: You two look like you’re solving something serious over here.

You: Subway colors. Don’t ask. Oh — Marcus, this is Nina. Her roommate knows Tyler.

Marcus: Hey Nina, good to meet you. So you’re the one stuck talking to this guy all night.

Nina: Somebody had to. He’s doing okay so far.

(walking over) Priya: Sorry, I couldn’t help overhearing — you guys talking about the subway?

Nina: Yeah, the colors. Priya, right?

Priya: That’s me. I have a whole theory about the green line.

You: Oh, we’re doing theories now? I’m Wei, by the way.

Marcus: And that’s my cue to go find food. I’ll catch you guys later.

So how long have you been in the city?
That makes me feel better.
Oh, you work in design, right?
What kind of stuff do you actually do?
No way, you know design terms?

Oh, you work in design, right? 先把对方说的捡回来,再问 What kind of stuff?。

Do you like music? Do you like sports?

3. Honestly, same. 比 Me too 更暖。 Me too 只是同意;Honestly, same. 配合 No way.、For real?

You(准备走了) Nina(聊得挺好) Ethan(另一个客人,刚聊了不到五分钟) Tyler(主人,在门口)

You: Okay, I think I’m gonna head out. I’ve got an early thing tomorrow.

Nina: Yeah, me too. This was fun, though.

You: Hey, let’s swap numbers — I wanna hear how the subway color thing ends.

Nina: Sure. Here, put yours in.

You: There you go. Are you on Instagram?

你用 Instagram 吗?

Nina: I am, but I barely post. It’s just @ninamakesstuff.

You: Got it, I’ll follow you. Do you use WeChat at all?

Nina: I don’t, sorry. Nobody I know here does.

You: No worries, that’s pretty normal. I’ll text you instead.

Nina: Perfect. Oh, and if you want — there’s a coffee place near my studio that’s actually good.

(Ethan

Ethan: Hey man, good talking to you. We should grab lunch sometime.

You: Yeah, for sure. Nice meeting you.

(Ethan 离开)

Nina: You know he’s not gonna text you, right?

You: Oh, I know. That’s just polite noise. No hard feelings.

Nina: You’re learning fast. Most people take a year to figure that out.

You: I’ve been burned before. Anyway — text me if you’re ever free this weekend.

Nina: Will do. Get home safe.

(Tyler

Tyler: Heading out? Thanks for coming, man.

You: Thanks for having me. Great party.

Tyler: Anytime. Oh — did you meet Nina? She’s good people.

You: I did. We swapped numbers.

I think I’m gonna head out.
Let’s swap numbers. Can I have your number? 自然
Here, put yours in.
Are you on Instagram?
Do you use WeChat at all?

1. Let's swap numbers. Let's exchange numbers.、Put your number in my phone?

I'm not really on social media. No worries, that's pretty normal.

3. We should grab lunch sometime Are you free Thursday?

You(在跟 Nina 发短信) Nina(昨天刚认识) Priya(周一在公司电梯里碰到)

You: Hey Nina, great meeting you last night.

Nina: Hey! Same. How’s the head?

You: Honestly, a little rough. I had one more drink than I planned.

Nina: Rookie move. I stopped at two and slept ten hours.

You: That’s the responsible version of last night. Hey, you mentioned that coffee place near your studio.

Nina: Oh yeah. It’s called Fern. Tiny place, like six seats.

You: Okay, so — would Saturday work? I could come by your side of town.

Nina: Saturday I’m actually working. Sunday morning?

You: Sunday morning works. Ten?

Nina: Ten’s good. Fair warning, I’m gonna make you look at my subway map.

You: I’d be disappointed if you didn’t.

Nina: Deal. See you Sunday.

Priya: Hey, Wei! Fun night, huh?

You: It was. Still recovering, honestly. Oh — Ethan said he’d grab lunch with me.

Priya: Did he? He says that to everybody. He’s a nice guy, he just never follows through.

You: Yeah, I figured. No big deal.

Priya: I’ll get your number from Marcus and we’ll set something up. For real.

You: By the way, I told Marcus about the subway color thing. He didn’t believe me.

Nina: Totally. I have a whole folder of this stuff. I’ll send you the link.

You: I’m honestly impressed. Sunday, ten o’clock, Fern.

Nina: I’ll be there. Don’t be late — the good seats go fast.

Hey Nina, great meeting you last night.
You mentioned that coffee place…
Would Saturday work?
Sunday morning works.

Great meeting you last night.

Would Saturday work?

You(想给 Nina 介绍几个朋友) Marcus(老朋友圈子里的人) Nina(新朋友) Priya(同事,也在圈子里)

You: Okay, they’re here. Nina, this is Marcus — he’s the one who dragged me to Tyler’s party.

Nina: Oh, so you’re the reason I had to talk to this guy all night.

Marcus: That’s me. Professional introducer. Good to finally meet you — Wei talks about your subway thing a lot.

You: And this is Priya — she’s on my team and she has a theory about the green line. Priya, this is Nina. She just moved here, so be nice.

Priya: I do. Nina, right? Wei said you’re a designer.

Nina: Yeah. What do you do?

Priya: Marketing. Which basically means I argue with designers all day.

Nina: Then we’ll get along great.

Priya: Yeah, absolutely. I’ll buy you a drink and complain about clients.

Marcus: Okay, real talk — do we order one thing each or do the family style thing?

You: Family style. I want to try everything on this menu.

Marcus: So Nina — how’d you end up in this city?

Nina: Job offer, four years ago. I was gonna stay a year. I’m kinda stuck here now.

Marcus: That’s how it goes. Nobody leaves.

Priya: Except Wei. He’s been here three weeks and he’s already complaining about January.

You: I’m pacing myself. Hey — a few of us are grabbing dinner again next Friday. Nothing fancy. You in, Nina?

Nina?

Nina: Yeah, I’m in. Same place?

Marcus: Different place. I’ll text everybody the address.

(to You) Nina: Thanks for doing this. I only knew my roommate before tonight.

You: You’re welcome. Honestly, you’re the one who made it easy.

Priya: Okay, enough. Who’s splitting the check — all four ways?

Marcus: Four ways. I’m not doing math after two beers.

This is Marcus — he’s the one who…
Good to finally meet you.
Real talk —
How’d you end up in this city? Why did you come here?

Let me introduce my friend to you. Nina, this is Marcus.
This is my friend Nina, she is a designer. Nina, this is Marcus — he's the one who…
Please take care of her. You two should talk — same field.

This is Marcus — he's the one who dragged me to Tyler's party.

You two should talk — you're in the same field.、You both grew up in the Midwest.

A few of us are grabbing dinner Friday + Nothing fancy + You in?。You in? 比 Would you like to join us?

Hey, I'm WEI.

2. Mind if I join you?

Would Saturday work?
