You shouldn’t have / That’s so sweet of you 等真实口语说法

Oh, you shouldn't have!,然后当着你的面撕开包装纸,拆完抬头给你一个真实的反应:Oh wow, I love it!

传统食物固定得几乎是规定动作:turkey(火鸡)、stuffing(塞在火鸡里的填料)、mashed potatoes(土豆泥)、gravy(肉汁)、pumpkin pie(南瓜派)。 What are you thankful for?。

Oh, you didn't have to!——这是客套,不是让你拿回去。

Thanks for having me on Thursday. The turkey was amazing.

Megan(美国朋友,认识两年的同事) You(在美工作的中国人)

Megan: Hey, so — Thanksgiving’s next Thursday. What are you gonna do?

You: Nothing, honestly. Probably just hanging out at home, you know?

Megan: Okay, that’s kinda sad. Come to my parents’ house. We’d love to have you.

You: Are you sure? I don’t want to intrude. It’s a family thing, right?

Megan: You’re not intruding. My mom always makes way too much food anyway.

You: Wait, really? I thought Thanksgiving was, like, family only.

Megan: Usually, yeah. But my parents love having people over. My mom’s already asking who I’m bringing.

You: Okay, then yes. I’d love to come. And what should I bring?

Megan: Nothing. Just yourself.

You: Come on, I can’t show up empty-handed.

Megan: If you really wanna bring something, get a bottle of wine. My dad’ll be thrilled.

You: Got it. Wine. So what time should I be there?

Megan: Come around two. We eat at four, and there’s football before that.

You: Two. And who else is gonna be there?

Megan: My parents, my grandma, my brother and his wife. Small this year.

You: So what do you eat? Turkey and all that?

Megan: Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie. The classics.

You: For sure. And can I help in the kitchen?

Megan: You can. She’ll put you to work. Bring comfortable pants.

You: Ha. Okay. See you Thursday, then.

Megan: Thursday. Text me when you’re close.

We’d love to have you.
Are you sure? I don’t want to intrude.
If you really want, bring a bottle of wine.
Come around two. We eat at four.
Come on, I can’t show up empty-handed. show up empty-handed = 空手赴约
She’ll put you to work.

Thank you for inviting me to your home. Thanks for having me.

1. We'd love to have you.

have someone over / have someone for dinner We'd love to have you.

Megan(主人家的女儿) Carol(Megan 的妈妈,主人) You(第一次上门的中国客人)

Megan: Oh hey! You made it. Come on in.

You: Hi! Thanks for having me. Oh — and these are for your mom.

Megan: Oh, you didn’t have to! Yeah? Are those from the bakery on Fifth?

(Carol

Carol: Hi! You must be the famous coworker. I’m Carol.

You: Hi Carol, nice to meet you. I brought flowers and some caramel corn.

Carol: Oh, you shouldn’t have! And flowers, too. Honey, these are gorgeous.

You: It’s nothing, really. Thanks for having me.

Carol: Come in, come in. What can I get you to drink? Cider? Wine?

You: Cider sounds great, thanks.

Megan: Okay, so — you did that perfectly. Flowers at the door, wine in the bag, done.

You: Was it too much? I wasn’t sure about the flowers.

Megan: Not at all. One thing, though — you hand it over at the door, not later.

You: Right, I noticed that. In China we’d usually leave it in the bag and give it at the end.

Megan: Yeah, don’t do that here. It looks like you forgot it. And nothing expensive, okay?

You: So a twenty-dollar bottle is fine?

Megan: Totally fine. Nobody checks the price tag. It’s the thought, you know?

You: What if I’d brought a really nice expensive gift?

Megan: Then my mom would’ve felt weird about it. Seriously, don’t.

You: Okay. Noted. Never outspend the host.

(from the kitchen) Carol: Megan! Come stir this, I need two hands!

Megan: Coming! See? Put to work.

You: Told you I’d help. Point me at something.

Thanks for having me.
It’s nothing, really.
What can I get you to drink?
You hand it over at the door, not later.
Oh, you didn’t have to!
It’s the thought.

1. hostess gift

2. Oh, you shouldn't have!

标准回法是 It's nothing, really.

Tyler(同事,跟你不同组) You(第一次参加美国办公室的交换礼物)

Tyler: Oh hey, you’re in the Secret Santa too?

You: Yeah, my first time. I still don’t know who I got.

Tyler: Ha, same. I got Kevin from accounting. I’ve said maybe ten words to him all year.

You: So what did you get him?

Tyler: A travel mug. Safe. Twenty bucks, right at the limit.

You: Wait, the limit is twenty-five?

Tyler: Yeah. You didn’t go over, did you?

You: No, I stayed under. I kinda asked around first.

Tyler: Yeah, twenty-five’s the rule. If you go way over, everybody feels weird.

You: So how does this work — do we open ’em now?

Tyler: Now, yeah. Everybody opens at the same time. And you gotta thank whoever it’s from.

You: But I don’t know who it’s from.

Tyler: You thank the room. Loudly. Thank you, Santa. Speaking of — what’d you get your person?

You: A gift card to that coffee place, plus a box of tea. He always drinks tea.

Tyler: A gift card? No way, that’s a real thing here. People love those.

You: In China a card kind of says “I gave up.”

Tyler: Fair enough. But not here. Also — this is a Secret Santa, not a White Elephant.

You: What’s the difference?

Tyler: White Elephant, everybody brings a joke gift and you steal each other’s. Way more chaos.

You: That sounds like my worst nightmare.

Tyler: Ha, it’s actually great. You’ll get invited to one eventually, for sure.

You’re in the Secret Santa too?
I still don’t know who I got. get = 抽到
Twenty bucks, right at the limit.
I asked around first.
You thank the room.
It’s a Secret Santa, not a White Elephant.
A gift card? That’s a real thing here.

What's the limit? 或者 Are we doing a twenty-five cap?

Who'd you get? = 你抽到谁?I got Kevin.

Tyler(送礼的同事,就站在你旁边看着) You(刚拆开包装,看清了是一支味道很冲的香氛蜡烛) Grace(中国同事,事后凑过来跟你说实话)

Tyler: That one’s from me. Go on, open it.

You: Oh wow — okay, here we go.

Tyler: I saw the label and thought of you. I dunno why.

You: Oh wow, thank you! A candle. This is so thoughtful of you.

Tyler: Yeah. It’s that smoky one. Is that your kind of thing?

You: Honestly, I don’t burn candles much, but this smells really good. And I like the tin.

Grace: So? You hate it, right?

You: I mean — it’s a candle. A very strong candle.

Grace: But you looked like you loved it.

You: I found one thing I actually liked. The tin.

Grace: You looked so happy. That was impressive.

You: By the way, You shouldn't have threw me. I thought it meant I spent too much.

💬 你: 不过 You shouldn't have 把我搞懵了。

Grace: No, that’s “I’m blown away.” It’s a compliment.

You: Oh. So when Megan’s mom said it at the door, she was happy?

Grace: Yeah, not telling you off. And I’ve done the fake-happy thing too. Cats on a scarf, one wear, one photo.

You: So what if it really doesn’t fit? Like clothes.

Grace: Then you use the gift receipt. Quietly.

You: There’s a receipt for gifts?

Grace: Yeah, price but no name. You swap it for store credit, and you never tell them.

You: Wow. Good to know. That’s so sweet of you.

That one’s from me. Go on, open it.
Oh wow, thank you!
This is so thoughtful of you.
You shouldn’t have!
Then you use the gift receipt.
I found one thing I actually liked.

Thank you. Oh wow, thank you! This is so thoughtful.
How much was it?

Oh wow, thank you! → This is so thoughtful of you. → I really do like the tin.

I don't like it。

I don't burn candles much, but this smells really good.

Grace(中国同事,在美国待了六年) You(刚过完第一个美国感恩节)

Grace: So how was your first American Thanksgiving?

You: Good. A lot of food. But the whole gift thing threw me.

Grace: What gift thing? Thanksgiving isn’t a gift holiday, you know.

You: Right, I know. It was the hostess gift. I handed her flowers at the door.

Grace: And she said Oh, you didn't have to! Just what they say.

You: Anyway, second thing. At Megan’s parents’ place, they open everything right there.

Grace: Yeah. In front of everybody. And you have to look happy.

You: That’s the part I can’t get used to. In China we’d never open it there.

Grace: Right — you take it home, open it alone, then thank them three days later.

You: But I kinda get it now. It’s for the person who gave it.

Grace: Yeah. If you wait till you get home, it looks like you didn’t care.

You: So the rule is: open it in front of them, and react.

Grace: Correct. And no three refusals — my mom still does that, and here it reads as “I don’t want it.”

You: I do it with my own friends.

Grace: What about money? Did anybody give cash?

You: No. If it were a Chinese family, there’d be a red envelope.

Grace: Right, the red envelope. Here it’s usually a gift card instead.

You: Huh. In China a card kind of says “I gave up.”

Grace: Not here. A card to REI basically says “I know you hike.”

You: So it’s still about being personal. Which one’s right?

Grace: Neither. Pick one per person. Americans — small, personal, open it there.

Grace: Practical, decent-looking, and hand it over quietly.

You: And the thank-you card. I keep forgetting that one.

Grace: Don’t. People notice. Especially after dinner at somebody’s house.

You: I’ll write one tonight. And I’ll say something specific.

The whole gift thing threw me.
They open everything right there.

There’d be a red envelope.
A card to REI says “I know you hike.”
Pick one per person.

No no no, I cannot accept such an expensive gift. Oh wow, you shouldn't have! Thank you.
Thank you for your gift. Thanks for the candle — it's on my desk now.

Thank you for the gift. Thanks for the candle — it's on my desk now.

3. You shouldn't have! 和 You're too kind.

1. You shouldn't have!

读成 you SHOULDN'T have,句尾上扬,听上去是惊喜。

2. Oh wow

Oh wow, thank you! Wow.)

3. Thanks for having me.

4. I love it. 的 it 要轻。

重音全在 love 上:I LOVE it.
