Are we exclusive?
Please be my girlfriend. I like hanging out with you. Wanna get dinner Saturday? 另外,含糊的 Let's hang out sometime.
Can I kiss you?、No pressure. 同样地,被拒绝也是常态——No worries, I get it.
|---|---|---|---|
| 刚认识 | We matched.
| 在聊 | We're talking.
| 出去过一次 | We went out once.
| 持续在见 | We're seeing each other.
| 排他 | We're exclusive.
| 正式情侣 | We're official.
You(在美工作的中国人,对同事 Emily 有好感) Jordan(美国朋友,同事,说话直接) Emily(同事,被约的那位)
You: Hey Jordan — can I ask you something kind of awkward?
Jordan: Uh oh. Yeah, go for it.
You: Emily and I have been chatting a lot lately. I can’t tell if she’s just being friendly or… you know.
Jordan: So ask her out. Worst case, she says no.
You: See, in China we’d kind of… ask someone to be your girlfriend first. Here I don’t even know if she’s seeing anybody.
Jordan: Yeah, don’t do that here. That’s like skipping to the last episode. First you find out if she’s single.
You: So I walk up and say, “Are you single?”
Jordan: You can. It’s a little blunt, though. Are you seeing anyone? is softer — same question, less pressure.
Are you seeing anyone?
You: Got it. What if she asks why I’m asking?
Jordan: Then be straight with her. “No reason — I just didn’t wanna assume anything.” And hey, if she’s taken, don’t make it weird — you’re gonna see her every day.
You: Oh hey, Emily. That machine’s been slow all week.
Emily: Tell me about it. I’ve been standing here like five minutes. — So how’s the project? Weren’t you guys slammed?
You: We were. It’s finally slowing down, so I might actually have a weekend again.
Emily: Nice. You’ve been looking kinda dead lately.
You: Thanks. That’s very sweet of you. — Anyway, um, can I ask you something?
Emily: Sure.
You: Are you seeing anyone? I don’t want to assume anything — I just realized I have no idea.
Emily: Oh. Not really, no. I mean, I’ve been on a couple of dates, but nothing serious. Why?
You: Honestly? I like talking to you, and I didn’t wanna keep guessing.
(smiles) Emily: Okay. That’s fair. Thanks for just asking, by the way. Most people don’t.

Emily: Oh, I’ve walked past that like a hundred times. Yeah, let’s do it.
You: Great. So — Saturday, seven, in front of the place? And hey, no pressure. If you end up hating ramen, we can go somewhere else.
Emily: I love ramen. You’re overthinking it. Text me if anything changes.

Are you free?(只问这一句) | 没时间没地点,对方没法答应 | Are you free Saturday? There's a place I wanna try. |

You(第一次跟 Emily 在工作之外见面) Emily(约会对象)
Emily: Okay, this place is smaller than I thought.
You: Right? I walked past it twice before I found the door.
(laughs) Emily: That’s the sign of a good restaurant, honestly.
You: Twenty minutes for a table, though. You okay with that?
Emily: Yeah, I’m not even hungry yet. — So how long have you been in the States?
You: About three years. Came for work, stayed for the food.
Emily: Staying for the food is very on brand for you.
You: …So. Yeah. (laughs) Sorry, my brain just went blank.
(laughs) Emily: It’s fine. That happens to everyone.
You: Okay, let me try that again. What do you do for fun? Like, when you’re not at work.
Emily: Hmm. I rock climb, kind of badly. And I cook a lot. What about you?
You: I’ve been getting into cooking too, actually. Mostly Sichuan stuff.
Emily: Wait — actually spicy, or American spicy?
You: Actually spicy. My mom mailed me a bag of peppers.
Emily: No way. Okay, that’s impressive. I burned the garlic in a stir-fry last week.
You: Burnt garlic is a lifestyle.
You: Tonight was really fun.
Emily: It was, for sure. Same time next week?
You: Yeah. — Hey. Can I kiss you?
(laughs) Emily: I was wondering when you’d ask.
|---|---|---|
| My brain just went blank. |
| That happens to everyone. |
| What do you do for fun? |
| What about you?
| I’ve been getting into…
| Tonight was really fun. |
| Same time next week? |
| Can I kiss you?
Sorry, my brain just went blank.
Where are you from? What do you do? Do you have siblings?,对方的感觉就是面试。 What do you do for fun?、What's your go-to spot around here?、Are you a morning person or a night person?
3. Can I kiss you?
配套的高频句还有 Is this okay? I was wondering when you'd ask.
You(两周前在约会 App 上 match 了 Sarah,出去喝过一次咖啡) Jordan(美国朋友,听你复述短信) Sarah(这一场只以短信出现)
Sarah: Hey! I had a really nice time last week.
You: Me too. That place you picked was good.
Sarah: It was. So — I wanna be honest with you about something.
You: Okay?
Sarah: You’re really nice, and I had a good time, but I’m not feeling a romantic connection.
(setting his phone down) You: Okay. She just sent it.
Jordan: Sent what?
You: “You’re really nice, but I’m not feeling a romantic connection.”
Jordan: Ouch. Well — at least she skipped the “it’s not you, it’s me” speech. That one’s in every movie.
You: Honestly? Kinda relieved. I don’t think I felt it either.
Jordan: Then you’re good. Just don’t do the thing.
You: What thing?
Jordan: The thing where the guy asks “why” and then argues with the answer. Most guys do it. Don’t be one of ’em.
You: Nah, I wasn’t gonna do that. I did wanna ask if she still wants to be friends, though.
Jordan: That’s fine. Just say it like you mean it — not like you’re waiting for her to change her mind. And you gotta dm her back like a normal person.
You: Right. (typing) “No worries, I get it. I had a good time too. Thanks for being upfront — I appreciate that.”
Jordan: That’s good. Send it. And hey — at least she told you straight. Half the people on those apps just ghost you.
(typing) You: “…And if you ever wanna grab a coffee as friends, I’m around. No pressure.”
Jordan: Perfect. Now put the phone down and drink your beer.
(ten minutes later) Sarah: Thanks for being cool about it. Coffee sometime — for real.

You(和 Emily 来往六周了) Emily(约会对象)
You: Hey — can I bring something up? It’s not bad, I promise.
Emily: That is the scariest way to start a sentence. But okay.
(laughs) You: I know. So — we’ve been hanging out for like five weeks now.
Emily: Six, if you count the ramen place.
You: Right, six. And I’ve been having a really good time.
Emily: Me too. So what’s the “but”?
You: There’s no but. I just — I realized I don’t actually know what we are. And I’d rather ask than guess.
Emily: That’s fair. Okay. What do you wanna know?
You: Are you seeing other people?
Emily: No. I haven’t been for a few weeks. You?
You: No. I’m not seeing anyone else. I told Sarah a while ago that it wasn’t a thing.
Emily: Oh — the coffee girl. I wondered about that.
You: Yeah. So — are we exclusive? Like, is that what this is?
Emily: I mean… yeah, I think so. I’m not talking to anybody else.
You: Okay. That’s — yeah. Good.
(pause) Emily: Can I be honest about something, though? I really like you, but I’m not ready to call you my boyfriend yet. Does that make sense?
You: It does. I’d rather know that than wonder about it. And I’m not in a rush.
Emily: Most guys hear “not yet” and hear “no.”
You: I mean, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wanna hear something else. But exclusive, no labels yet — that works for me. So — where do you see this going? Not next year. Just… in general.
(laughs) Emily: Relax. I don’t have a five-year plan for us. Now come help me with these dishes.
