Oh my god / I love it。
You shouldn't have! / I love it! / Thank you so much!——注意,不管喜不喜欢都要表现高兴,这是社交规则,不是虚伪。 I don't like it
| 自带酒水 | BYOB(bring your own booze) | 邀请时直接说,不是失礼 |
I don't really do birthdays.。 What are you doing for your birthday?,比直接订蛋糕、叫全组来唱歌安全得多——寿星本人不喜欢,惊喜就变成事故。
You(在美工作的中国人) Megan(美国朋友,今天生日)
You: Oh hey — happy birthday!
Megan: Thank you! Oh, you remembered.
You: Of course I remembered. How’s your day going so far?
Megan: So far so good. I slept in. Tyler’s doing something tonight, apparently.
You: Yeah, he texted me. What time should I be there?
Megan: Seven-ish. Honestly, come whenever. He’s not strict about that stuff.
You: Got it. Hey, I texted you this morning, by the way.
Megan: You did. You were the first one.
You: Ha. Is that a good thing or a weird thing?
Megan: It’s a good thing. My mom called at six, so you know, you beat her by a lot.
You: Oh no. Six in the morning?
Megan: Six my time. She forgets the time difference every year. Anyway — gift?
You: Okay, don’t look, it’s in my bag. … Here. It’s nothing big.
Megan: Oh my god, you didn’t have to get me anything. … Wait. Are these the earrings?
You: The ones from that store you kept going back to. Yeah.
Megan: Aww. I love them. Seriously. How did you even remember that?
You: You sent me the link like four times.
Megan: Okay, that’s on me. Happy birthday to me, I guess.
You: Happy birthday, Megan. I’m really glad we work together.
Megan: Okay, now I’m gonna cry at nine in the morning. Thanks a lot.

You: Okay, that’s enough. Give it back.
Megan: No! Cards go on the fridge. You’re stuck with me.
|---|---|---|
| This is for you.
| Can I open it now?
| Go ahead. That’s the whole point. |
| You shouldn’t have.
| No way.
| Shut up!
| I actually love it.
| Don’t make it a thing. | make it a thing = 搞得像件大事 |
1. You shouldn't have 不是"你不该送"。
正确接法是 I wanted to.
Oh my god / Oh wow / No way / Shut up / Aww / I love it。 哪怕东西不合口味,也要找到一句真心话:This is so me(这太是我的风格了)、I've been meaning to get one of these(我一直想买一个)。

Here, this is for you. I didn't know what to get you
You shouldn't have! I love it!
3. 被邀请:Can I bring anything? You don't have to,要么直接告诉你带什么。 I'll bring a dessert anyway
I'm gonna head out. Thanks for having me.
