|---|---|---|
| 门口 / 进门 | 有人迎接(greeter)并主动握手,递给你一本 bulletin(程序单) | Thanks, this is my first time. |
| 找座位 | usher(引座员)带你到长椅(pews)坐下 | Where should I sit? |
| 结束后 | 大家握手、喝咖啡、聊天(fellowship) | Thanks for having me. |
Visitors aren't expected to give.),传过来往后传就行(Just pass it down the row.)。
多数教会是 come as you are——西装和牛仔裤坐在一起很常见。
Is this your first time with us?—— 对方问你,回Yeah, it's my first time. It's totally fine to pass the plate.—— 奉献盘可以不投,这句话让人放心。Do I need to take my shoes off?—— 进寺庙、清真寺的礼拜厅之前必问。
What church do you go to?:
Baptist / Methodist / Lutheran / Presbyterian |
Greeter(教堂门口的接待) Usher(礼拜堂里的引座员) You(第一次来这座教堂)
Greeter: Good morning! Welcome. Is this your first time with us?
You: Yeah, it is. My neighbor invited me.
Greeter: Oh, wonderful. Well, welcome. Let me grab you a bulletin.
You: Thanks. What’s the bulletin for?
Greeter: It’s got the whole service in it — the songs, the readings, when to stand up. So you can follow along.
You: Oh, that helps. I was a little worried I wouldn’t know what to do.
Greeter: Don’t worry about it. Just follow the people next to you. Honestly, nobody’s watching you.
You: That’s good to hear. So where should I sit?
Greeter: Anywhere, really. But let me have one of our ushers help you find a seat.
You: Okay, thanks. Oh — is there a dress code? I wasn’t sure what to wear.
Greeter: Nope. Come as you are. You’ll see everything in here from suits to jeans.
You: Good. And how long does the service usually run?
Greeter: About an hour. Sometimes a little over if there’s a baptism.
You: Okay. And, um — do I need to put anything in the plate when they pass it?
Greeter: Not at all. Visitors aren’t expected to give. Just pass it down the row.
You: Oh, good. That was my main worry, honestly.
Greeter: You’re all set then. Here — this is one of our ushers.
Usher: Hi there, welcome. First time here?
You: Yeah, first time. Is it okay if I sit near the back?
Usher: Sure. How about this row? You can see everything, and you’re near the aisle.
You: This is great. Thank you.
Usher: No problem. Service starts in about five minutes. Just stand when everybody else stands.
You: Got it. Thanks for your help.

1. bulletin
礼拜开始前和结束后,前后排的人经常转身跟你握手,说一句 Good morning 或者 Peace be with you。
4. You're all set
Church member(坐在你旁边的教友) You(第一次来,什么都不懂)
Church member: Hi! First time here? I don’t think I’ve seen you before.
You: Yeah, first time. My neighbor goes here.
Church member: Oh, nice. Well, welcome. If you’ve got questions, just ask.
You: Actually, I do have one. Do people dress up for this? I wasn’t sure.
Church member: Some do, some don’t. You’re fine. The one time people really dress up is Christmas Eve.
You: Good to know. And when do we stand up? I don’t want to be the only one sitting.
Church member: Just watch me. The bulletin tells you too — it says “please stand.”
You: Okay. What about the plate they pass around? Am I supposed to put something in?
Church member: You don’t have to. It’s mostly members who give. Just pass it down the row.
You: That’s a relief. I didn’t want to be rude.
Church member: Not rude at all. Honestly, nobody’s going to watch what you do with it.
You: Okay. One more thing — what about communion? Someone told me you shouldn’t take it if you’re not a member.
Church member: It depends on the church. Some say everyone’s welcome, some ask you to be a member. Here, the pastor explains it first.
You: So if I’m not sure, what should I do?
Church member: Just stay seated and pass the tray. That’s completely normal.
You: Just let it go by. Got it.
Church member: Yeah. Or if they’re coming down the aisle and you’re on the end, just say “no thank you” quietly. Nobody minds.
You: That’s really helpful. I always worry about doing the wrong thing.
Church member: Everybody does their first time. You’re doing great.
You: Thanks. Oh — one more. Is it okay to leave early if I need to?
Church member: Sure. Slip out during a song, not during the sermon. Nobody will think anything of it.
You: Good. Thank you — you’ve been really kind.

|---|---|---|
I don't know the manner. | manner 是"举止、态度",不是"礼仪流程" | I'm not sure how the service works. |
Must I stand up? | must 像命令,问出来很生硬 | When do we stand up? |
Can I not give money? | 绕且容易听成抱怨 | Am I supposed to put something in? |
I don't want to be impolite. | 语法没错,但美国人更常说 rude | I don't want to be rude. |
What is the rule of communion? | rule 太硬,而且各教会规矩本来就不同 | How does communion work here? |
I am not a member, so I cannot eat. | 圣餐不用 eat,听起来像吃饭 | I'm not a member — should I take communion? |
Please teach me the process. | process 太书面,teach me 也太重 | Can you walk me through it? |
Sorry, I am a stranger. | 有点自我贬低,也不解决问题 | Sorry — this is my first time here. |
Do I have to do the same as others? | 中式直译,太长 | Should I just do what everyone else does? |
Visitors aren't expected to give.
去天主教堂说 What time is Mass?,去新教教会说 What time is the service?。
Pastor(这座教堂的牧师) You(礼拜结束后,你在门厅喝咖啡)
Pastor: Hi, I’m Pastor Dan. I don’t think we’ve met.
You: Hi, I’m Wei. Nice to meet you. This is my first Sunday here.
Pastor: Well, thanks for coming. What brought you in?
You: My neighbor invited me. I moved here a couple months ago.
Pastor: Oh, where from?
You: China. I’ve been in the States about a year.
Pastor: Nice. So how’d you like the service?
You: I liked it. I didn’t catch everything, but I could follow the bulletin.
Pastor: That’s great. Any questions about anything?
You: A few, actually. How do people usually get involved here?
Pastor: There’s no one way. Some people just come on Sundays. Others help with the food pantry, or teach Sunday school.
You: Do you have to be a member to do that?
Pastor: For most things, no. Membership is more of a formal step — we run a class a few times a year if you ever want to do that.
You: Good to know. So — this might be a strange question. Do you have an English class, or a small group? I’d like to practice speaking.
Pastor: Not strange at all. We’ve got small groups that meet during the week — usually six to ten people, in somebody’s home.
You: Is that okay for someone who isn’t a Christian? I’m honestly still learning.
Pastor: Most of them, yes. Every group’s a little different, but nobody’s going to quiz you.
You: That’s good, because I’d fail. What do you actually do in a small group?
Pastor: We read a passage together, talk about it, and catch up on each other’s week. There’s a lot of talking.
You: That’s exactly what I need. And is there a Bible study too? I saw it in the bulletin.
Pastor: Wednesday nights at seven. That one’s open to anybody.
You: Do I need to sign up?
Pastor: You can, or you can just show up. I’ll put you on the email list if you want — that’s where we post everything.
You: Yes, please. That’d be great.
Pastor: Perfect. And if you ever want to just talk — about faith, or about anything — my door’s open. You don’t need an appointment.
You: Thank you, Pastor Dan. I appreciate you taking the time.
Pastor: Of course. We’d love to have you back.

牧师每天都在跟陌生人寒暄,What brought you in? How'd you find us?
I'd like to practice speaking.
3. membership
4. Pastor
Coordinator(负责节日活动和聚餐报名的协调员) You(礼拜后在门厅看到报名桌)
Coordinator: Hi! Are you signing up for the Thanksgiving potluck?
You: Maybe. What’s a potluck, exactly? I’ve heard the word but I’m not sure.
Coordinator: Oh, it’s easy — everybody brings a dish, and then we all eat together. Like a big shared dinner.
You: So I’d bring food? What do people usually bring?
Coordinator: Whatever you’re good at. Some people bring a main dish, some bring a side, some bring dessert.
You: How much should I bring? Like, for how many people?
Coordinator: Enough for eight to ten people. It’s a big group, so there’s always plenty of food.
You: Okay. Do I need to tell you what I’m bringing?
Coordinator: If you can, yeah — that way we don’t end up with twelve desserts. There’s a sign-up sheet.
You: That makes sense. Can I bring something Chinese? Like dumplings or fried rice?
Coordinator: Absolutely. People love that. Someone brought dumplings last year and they were gone in ten minutes.
You: Great. What about plates and forks? Do I bring those too?
Coordinator: We’ve got all that. Just bring the food — and bring a serving spoon for your dish.
You: Oh, good tip. Should it be warm when I get there?
Coordinator: If it’s supposed to be warm, yeah. A lot of people bring it in a slow cooker, so it stays hot.
You: Okay. And do I need to write my name on the dish?
Coordinator: Please — that way you get your dish back. And put a label on it if it has nuts, people ask about that.
You: Will do. Oh — I saw something in the bulletin about a Christmas Eve service. What’s different about that one?
Coordinator: It’s at night, and it’s mostly music. Lots of candles, the kids sing. It’s the big one for visitors, honestly.
You: Do I need tickets or anything?
Coordinator: No tickets. Just show up. Come a little early though — it fills up.
You: How early is early?
Coordinator: Fifteen, twenty minutes. Parking’s the hard part that night.
You: Good to know. And Easter — is that similar?
Coordinator: Easter’s in the morning, and there’s usually breakfast before the service, and an egg hunt for the kids. Also very crowded.
You: Sounds fun. Okay, I’ll sign up. What do I write?
Coordinator: Just your name and what you’re bringing. And if you’re bringing kids, put how many — we count for the kids’ table.
You: No kids, just me. Thanks — this was really helpful.
Coordinator: Of course. See you Wednesday.

What time I should arrive? | 疑问句语序错了 | What time should I get there? |
Can I take my dish back? | take back 像"要回来",容易误会 | Do I get my dish back? |
The food is hot, is that OK? | 两句硬拼,而且意思模糊 | Should it be warm when I get there? |
I have no children, only myself. | 太书面,像填表 | No kids, just me. |
1. potluck
不用带够所有人吃的量,enough for eight to ten people 是标准答案。
4. slow cooker
Volunteer(清真寺开放日的志愿者) You(第一次进清真寺)
Volunteer: Hi, welcome! Are you here for the open house?
You: Yeah, I saw it online. I’ve never been inside a mosque before.
Volunteer: Well, you’re in the right place. Come on in. Any questions before we start?
You: A few, actually. First one — do I need to take my shoes off?
Volunteer: Yes, please. Shoes come off right here. You can leave them on the rack.
You: Okay. Should I have worn something different? I read something about covering up.
Volunteer: You’re fine like that. In the prayer hall, women are usually asked to cover their hair — we have scarves right here if you need one.
You: Oh, good. Do you have a scarf I could borrow?
Volunteer: Of course. Here you go. It just goes over your head like this. Long sleeves and long pants are good too — that’s the general idea.
You: Got it. And can I take pictures?
Volunteer: In the lobby, sure. In the prayer hall, please ask first — we ask people not to photograph anyone who’s praying.
You: That makes sense. No pictures of people.
Volunteer: Right. And keep your voice down in there. Someone might be praying.
You: Of course. So is there a tour, or do I just walk around?
Volunteer: We do a short tour — about twenty minutes. We walk through the prayer hall and I explain what everything is.
You: Nice. What time’s the next one?
Volunteer: There’s one at two and one at three. You just missed the two o’clock, so you’ve got about forty minutes.
You: Perfect. Can I walk around on my own until then?
Volunteer: You can, yeah. Just stay out of the prayer area while people are praying. See that line on the carpet? That’s where it starts.
You: Okay, I’ll stay behind it. Oh — is it okay that I’m not Muslim? I don’t want to intrude.
Volunteer: Not at all. That’s the whole point of today. Ask anything you want.
You: Thanks. That’s really welcoming. One more — what’s the busiest time here? I’d rather come when it’s quiet.
Volunteer: Friday around midday is our busiest — that’s our weekly prayer. Weekday afternoons are usually the quietest.
You: Good to know. And if I want to come back another time, do I need to call ahead?
Volunteer: Not for a visit. Visitor hours are on the website. If you want to bring a group, then yes, email us first.
You: Got it. Thank you — I’ve already learned a lot.
Volunteer: Happy to have you. Enjoy the tour.

|---|---|---|
Must I take off my shoes? | must 太硬,像在质疑规定 | Do I need to take my shoes off? |
Can I enter with my shoes? | enter 太书面,而且问法绕 | Do I need to take my shoes off? |
I want to borrow a scarf, OK? | 两个句子拼在一起,且 want 显得理所当然 | Do you have a scarf I could borrow? |
Can I take photo? | photo 在这里要加 s | Can I take pictures? |
I will not take people. | 中式直译,不是英语说法 | No pictures of people. |
I am not a Muslim person. | Muslim 本身就是名词,加 person 多余 | I'm not Muslim. |
Please forgive my disturbing. | disturbing 用错了,且太卑微 | Sorry — am I allowed in here? |
What time is your open? | open 是形容词,不能这么用 | What are your visitor hours? |
Is it allowed to look around? | 语法没错但很生硬 | Can I walk around on my own? |
Do I need to take my shoes off? 和 Can I take pictures?,两句话解决 90% 的尴尬。

1. church
(What church do you go to?),读糊了对方会听成别的词。
welcome 是 /ˈwelkəm/ /ˈwɛlkəm/,visitor 是 /ˈvɪzɪtə/ /ˈvɪzɪtər/。
4. Welcome!
Do I need to take my shoes off?
6. offering
