「Adopt, don't shop.」
He's already neutered, microchipped, and up to date on shots.(他已经做过绝育、植入了芯片,疫苗也是齐的。)
要看的词有:pet policy(能不能养)、pet deposit(宠物押金)、pet rent(每月宠物附加租金)、breed restrictions(有些公寓禁养某些犬种)。
常见的预防项目要认识这几个词:heartworm(心丝虫,狗通常每月吃预防药)、flea and tick(跳蚤和蜱虫,flea treatment 是驱虫药)、distemper / parvo(犬类常见疫苗防的病)、bordetella(犬窝咳疫苗,寄养和日托几乎都要求)、kennel cough(犬窝咳)。
What brings you in today?(今天是什么情况)、Is he up to date on vaccines?(疫苗齐吗)、We'll do a fecal test.(做个便检)、He needs a booster.(要打加强针)、We'll send the records to your email.(记录发你邮箱)。 How much is that gonna run?(大概多少钱)、Can I get an estimate before we do anything?(做之前能给我个估价吗)、Is there a cheaper option?(有便宜点的方案吗)。
别慌,可以问:Do you take CareCredit?(那张卡是真实存在的宠物医疗分期卡)、Is there a payment plan?(能分期吗)、Can I get an estimate first?(能先给估价吗)。
出门寄养有三个选择:boarding(宠物店或医院寄养,动物住那儿)、dog daycare(日托,白天去晚上回)、dog sitter(上门看狗,或接去家里)。 He's a little anxious.(他有点紧张)、He takes medication at night.(他晚上要吃药)、Here's his food — he gets one cup twice a day.(这是他的粮,一天两次、一次一杯)。
energy level(精力)、good with kids(对孩子友好吗)、good with other dogs(跟别的狗合得来吗)、house-trained(会不会在家上厕所)。
Shelter staff(收容所工作人员) You(第一次来收容所,想领养一只中型犬)
Shelter staff: Hi! Are you here to look at the dogs, or the cats?
You: Dogs. We’re looking for a medium-sized one. This is our first time here, so I don’t really know how it works — can you walk me through it?
Shelter staff: No problem. You can walk through the kennels on your own, and when one catches your eye, we bring him out to a meet-and-greet room.
You: Okay. And he came from where? It says “transfer” on this card.
Shelter staff: He came to us from animal control. So we don’t have a full history on him — no idea about his first two years.
You: Got it. That’s honest, I appreciate that. Okay, this one — Biscuit. What’s he like?
Shelter staff: Biscuit is about three, and he’s medium energy. He loves people. Other dogs, he’s picky.
You: Picky how?
Shelter staff: He does fine with calm dogs. He doesn’t like pushy ones. So if you have another dog, we’d want to do a dog meet before anything.
You: We don’t have another dog. But we do have a four-year-old. How is he with kids?
Shelter staff: He’s been fine with kids here, but we always say: a meet-and-greet with your kid, supervised, before you decide.
You: That makes sense. Can we do that today? My son’s with my wife in the car.
Shelter staff: Sure, bring them in. And one more question — do you rent or own?
You: We rent an apartment.
Shelter staff: Then I have to ask — does your lease allow dogs? And is there a breed restriction?
You: I checked. Dogs are allowed under thirty-five pounds, and there’s no breed restriction. I have the lease on my phone.
Shelter staff: Perfect, that’s exactly what we need to see. Now — the fee. It’s two hundred and fifty dollars, and here’s what’s included.
You: Wait, that’s for the dog?
Shelter staff: For everything. He’s already neutered, microchipped, and up to date on shots. That’s why the fee is what it is.
You: Oh, that’s actually a lot cheaper than I thought. So I don’t have to pay for the surgery separately?
Shelter staff: No, it’s done. You’ll get his vaccine record to take to your vet.
You: Great. And is there an application? Do you interview people?
Shelter staff: There’s an application, and yes, we talk to every adopter. Some rescues even do a home visit, but we don’t.
You: Fair enough. That seems reasonable if it means the dogs go to good homes.
Shelter staff: That’s the idea. Let’s go get your family and bring Biscuit out.

1. Adopt, don't shop.
He's already neutered, microchipped, and up to date on shots. What's included in the fee? How much?
Does your lease allow dogs? 和 Is there a breed restriction? pet deposit(一次性押金)和 pet rent(每月附加租金)是两笔不同的钱。
5. energy level
He's medium energy. What's his energy level?
Shelter staff(收容所工作人员) You(领养一周后回来问牌照和芯片的事)
You: Hi, we adopted Biscuit last Saturday. Quick question — do I need to get him a license with the city?
Shelter staff: Depends on the city, but a lot of them require it. Where do you live?
You: Just outside the city line, in the county.
Shelter staff: Then it’s the county that handles it, not the city. Rules are different — you’d want to check with them.
You: Okay. What do I usually need for a license?
Shelter staff: Proof of a rabies shot, usually. Most places won’t issue one without it.
You: Good, he’s got that. This is his vaccine record — can you show me what I’m looking at? I don’t understand half of it.
Shelter staff: Sure. So rabies is the one with the date and the vet’s signature. That’s the legal one.
You: And the others?
Shelter staff: Distemper and parvo are in one shot, usually called DHPP. And bordetella is the kennel cough one.
You: Kennel cough — that’s the one boarding places ask about, right?
Shelter staff: Exactly. If you ever board him or use daycare, they’ll want bordetella and rabies on paper.
You: Got it. Now, the microchip. They told us he has one. How do I know it’s registered to me and not to you guys?
Shelter staff: Good question. It’s registered to us right now. You need to update the contact info to your name and number.
You: How do I do that?
Shelter staff: We can do it here — takes five minutes. Or you go to the chip company’s website with the chip number.
You: Let’s do it here. Does it cost anything?
Shelter staff: Updating your info with us is free. Some companies charge a small fee if you register directly, but usually not much.
You: Okay. And how does the chip actually work? Does it have a battery or something?
Shelter staff: No battery. It’s passive — a scanner reads it. Any vet or shelter can scan it and get your number.
You: So if he gets out and somebody finds him…
Shelter staff: They scan him, they call you. That’s why the contact info has to be current. If you move, update it.
You: Makes sense. One more thing — the rabies tag. Is that the same as the chip?
Shelter staff: No. The tag is the metal thing that goes on his collar. It’s proof of vaccination, and it has a number on it.
You: So I should keep it on his collar. Got it. And should I put my phone number on the collar too?
Shelter staff: A lot of people do. A collar with a phone number works even if the tag falls off.
You: Great. Let me get the chip updated now.

3. city license
4. bordetella
5. on paper
They'll want it on paper.
Vet(兽医) Vet tech(兽医助理) You(带 Biscuit 做第一次体检)
Vet tech: Hi, you must be Biscuit’s dad. Come on back — I’ll get his weight first.
You: That’s me. He’s a little nervous, just so you know. He shook the whole ride over.
Vet tech: That’s really common. Let me get him on the scale… okay, forty-one pounds. Good boy.
Vet tech: It’s a healthy weight. And I see you brought the vaccine record — perfect.
You: Yeah, the shelter gave us everything. I also wrote down his food and how much he eats.
Vet tech: Oh, that’s helpful. The vet will be in shortly.
Vet: Hi there. I’m Dr. Ellis. So what brings you in today — just a first checkup?
You: First checkup. We adopted him a week ago, so I want to make sure everything’s okay.
Vet: Good. Is he up to date on vaccines? Let me look at that record… rabies, DHPP, bordetella. He’s in good shape.
You: The shelter did all of that. So what do we still need to do?
Vet: A few things. I’d like to do a fecal test — that checks for intestinal parasites. And I want to talk about heartworm prevention.
You: Heartworm. Somebody at the dog park mentioned that. What is it?
Vet: It’s a parasite spread by mosquitoes. It can be really serious in dogs. The good news is prevention is easy — most dogs take a monthly pill.
You: So it’s a pill every month. Is that expensive?
Vet: It depends on the size of the dog and the brand. I can give you a couple of options and prices.
You: That’d be great. And what about fleas and ticks? Do I need something for that too?
Vet: Most owners use a monthly flea and tick treatment, yes. Especially if he’s outside a lot. And — I can feel the scar, so he’s already neutered. That’s taken care of.
You: Good, one less thing. Now, the money question — how much is all of this gonna run?
Vet: Let me write it up. The exam, the fecal test, and the prevention — I’ll give you an estimate before we do anything.
You: I appreciate that. Oh, and one more thing — is there a cheaper option on the prevention? I’m asking because we’re on one income right now.
Vet: That’s totally fair to ask. There are generic versions that work well. I’ll price both.
You: Thank you. And when should we come back?
Vet: A year for the annual, unless something comes up. Rabies will need a booster when it’s due — we’ll send you a reminder.
You: Perfect. And can you send the records to my email?
Vet: We’ll send everything to your email today. And I’ll note that he’s on the monthly prevention.

1. What brings you in today?
回答不用复杂:Just a checkup. 或者 He's been throwing up since last night. 就行。
How much is that gonna run?
What's the cost for that?。两句都比 How much money?
3. Can I get an estimate before we do anything?
加上 before we do anything 就更清楚:先给价,我再决定。
4. heartworm
5. generic
There are generic versions that work well. 问 Is there a generic? 比问 Is there a cheap one?
Vet(急诊兽医) Vet tech(兽医助理) You(晚上十一点,狗突然呕吐不止)
Vet tech: Hi. Tell me what’s going on.
You: He’s been throwing up for about two hours. Six or seven times. He ate something in the park — I don’t know what.
Vet tech: Okay. When did he eat it, roughly?
You: Around seven. So four hours ago.
Vet tech: Is he drinking water? Any blood in the vomit?
You: He drank a little. No blood that I saw. He’s just really drooly and he won’t lie down.
Vet tech: Got it. I’m going to take him back for triage — that’s where we check how urgent it is. Stay in the waiting room and someone will come get you.
Vet: Hi, I’m Dr. Reyes. So — he ate something four hours ago, and he’s been vomiting since. Do you have any idea what it was?
You: No idea. It could have been food someone dropped, or a wrapper. I tried to get it out of his mouth but he swallowed it.
Vet: That’s the problem with these cases — we don’t know what we’re dealing with. I’d recommend blood work and an X-ray to start.
You: Okay. Before we go any further — can I get an estimate? I’m not going to pretend cost isn’t a factor.
Vet: Of course. Let me write it up… exam, blood work, X-ray, and medication to stop the vomiting. It comes out somewhere between four hundred and seven hundred, depending on what we find.
You: Okay. That’s a lot, but I expected that. Is there a payment plan, or do you need it all tonight?
Vet: We take a deposit tonight, and the rest when you pick him up. We also take CareCredit, if you have it.
You: I don’t have CareCredit. What is it, exactly?
Vet: It’s a medical credit card a lot of vet offices take. You can apply for it on your phone — it takes a few minutes. Some plans have no interest for a period.
You: Let me try that. If it doesn’t go through, can we do the payment plan here?
Vet: We can split it into two payments, yes. I want to be straight with you — if the X-ray shows a blockage, that’s surgery, and surgery is a different number.
You: I understand. Let’s do the blood work and the X-ray first, and then we’ll decide.
Vet: That’s a reasonable way to do it. One more thing — is he insured? Pet insurance usually doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, so the earlier you start, the better.
You: No, we just adopted him last week. I’ll look into it. Okay, let’s start — and can you call me if anything changes?
Vet: We’ll call you either way. Go get some coffee — this takes about an hour.
You: Thank you. And — he’s a good dog. He’s only been ours for a week, but he’s a good dog.
Vet: We’ll take good care of him. I promise.

Can I get an estimate before we do anything?
Is there a payment plan?——不少诊所能分两次付,但政策各不相同。
He's been throwing up six or seven times in two hours, no blood, he drank a little.
Sitter(寄养人) You(下个月要出差,来找寄养)
Sitter: Hi! Are you here about boarding? What’s his name, and how old is he?
You: Yeah — we’re going away for five days next month. This is Biscuit, he’s about three. We adopted him three weeks ago, so this would be his first time away from us.
Sitter: First-timers are usually a little stressed the first night. It gets better after that.
You: That’s what I’m hoping. What do you need from us?
Sitter: Vaccine records. We require rabies and bordetella, and they have to be current.
You: I have those on my phone. Can I email them?
Sitter: Email works. And is he neutered? We don’t take intact dogs.
You: He is. The shelter did it.
Sitter: Great. Now, the important question — is he good with other dogs?
You: Mostly. He’s fine with calm dogs. He gets nervous around dogs that jump on him.
Sitter: Okay, so we’d put him in a separate play group, or give him his own yard time. That’s not a problem.
You: That would be ideal. He’s a little anxious in general. He also takes medication at night.
Sitter: What’s the medication for?
You: It’s for his joints. One pill with dinner. I’ll bring it in the original bottle with the label.
Sitter: Perfect, that’s exactly what we need. And food? Do you want to bring his own?
You: I’d rather bring it. Switching food upsets his stomach. Here’s his food — he gets one cup twice a day.
Sitter: One cup, twice a day. Got it. Anything else we should know?
You: He doesn’t like having his paws touched. And he’ll bark at the doorbell. That’s just him.
Sitter: Noted. Now — what about a trial day? We usually suggest a daycare day before a long stay.
You: That’s a great idea. Can we do that next Saturday?
Sitter: Sure. Bring him in the morning and pick him up in the afternoon. That way he knows the place before he stays five nights.
You: Perfect. What time do you open?
Sitter: Seven in the morning. And just so you know, we do send photos every day.
You: Oh, that’s great. My wife will love that. Okay — one last thing. Who’s here overnight?
Sitter: Someone’s here overnight, yes. Not always in the kennel room, but on the property.
You: Good. That’s what I wanted to know. Let’s book the trial day.

We require rabies and bordetella, and they have to be current. ——current(在有效期内)是关键。
2. intact
We don't take intact dogs. ——intact
Could we do a trial day first?
I'll bring it in the original bottle with the label. ——
Who's here overnight?

1. rabies、neutered、bordetella
2. microchip
MI-cro-chip(/ˈmaɪkroʊtʃɪp/),不是 mi-CRO-chip。
How much is that gonna run? Can I get an estimate first?
How much is that gonna run?、What are you gonna do?、He's gonna be fine.
5. He's a good dog.
He's a good dog.
Is it a boy or a girl?,之后就一直用对。
