| suggested donation / pay what you wish | 建议捐款 / 随意付费 | 前者可以少给甚至不给;后者是特定时段的"随便给" |
App |
Is this a suggested donation or a required ticket price?。
Does that include the special exhibition?,免得走到展厅门口才发现还要再排一次队。
Where are the lockers?),
Where's the coat check?) -
No flash.),也不能碰展品(Please don't touch.)
The museum will be closing in fifteen minutes.)
Do you have a student discount?——
App,
Download the app and it's free.
When's the next tour?
Ticket agent(博物馆售票窗口的售票员) You(第一次来,只有一下午时间)
Ticket agent: Hi there. One adult?
You: Yeah, just me. General admission, I guess?
Ticket agent: General admission gets you into all the permanent galleries. The special exhibition is separate.
You: Oh. What’s in the special exhibition?
Ticket agent: It’s the photography show. It’s here until January, and it’s a separate ticket.
You: Is it worth it? I’ve got about three hours.
Ticket agent: If you like photography, yeah. It takes about an hour. And it’s timed entry, so you pick a slot.
You: What’s timed entry, exactly?
Ticket agent: You pick a thirty-minute window to go in. It keeps the rooms from getting too crowded.
You: Okay. If I skip it, is there enough to see with general admission?
Ticket agent: Plenty. Most people spend two or three hours in the permanent collection alone.
You: Let me do both, then. What slots do you have?
Ticket agent: I’ve got eleven-thirty and two-fifteen.
You: Two-fifteen’s better. Can I go into the rest of the museum before that?
Ticket agent: Yeah, general admission is good all day. Just come back to the exhibition entrance at your time.
You: Great. Do I need to buy in advance normally? I just walked up.
Ticket agent: Today’s fine. On weekends and holidays, I’d get them online ahead of time. We do sell out.
You: Good to know. Does this include the audio guide?
Ticket agent: No, that’s separate. You rent it at the desk inside.
You: Okay. Do you take cards?
Ticket agent: Card or cash, either one.
You: Here you go. Do I get a paper ticket?
Ticket agent: I’ll give you a sticker — wear it where it shows. And keep this receipt for the exhibition.
You: Got it. Where do I start?
Ticket agent: Straight ahead, then the stairs on your left. Maps are at the info desk.
You: Thanks. And if I go out for lunch, can I come back?
Ticket agent: Same day, yeah. Just show the sticker at the door.
You: Perfect. Thanks a lot.

1. general admission
2. timed entry
Staff(语音导览租借处的工作人员) You(想租一个中文的语音导览)
Staff: Hi, can I help you?
You: Yeah, I wanted to get an audio guide. Is this where I get one?
Staff: It is. There’s a small fee, and it’s less with a student ID.
You: Oh, I have a student ID. It’s from a university in China, though — does that count?
Staff: Usually, as long as it’s current and has a date on it.
You: Great. Do you have it in Mandarin?
Staff: We do. Let me get you the Mandarin one.
You: Thanks. Is it a device, or do I use my phone?
Staff: This is a device — a little handset. Part of the collection is on our app now, but the main tour is still on these.
You: Okay. How does it work?
Staff: You type in the number next to the artwork and press play. The numbers are on the wall labels.
You: Got it. Do I need to leave a deposit, or hold my ID?
Staff: We hold something — either an ID or a credit card. You get it back when you return the guide.
You: Okay, here’s my ID. Oh — do you have lockers? I’ve got a backpack.
Staff: We do, right around the corner. They’re free — just take a key.
You: Perfect. And a coat check?
Staff: Coat check is by the main entrance, on your right.
You: Great. Last thing — can I take pictures inside?
Staff: In most galleries, yes. No flash, and no tripods. A few pieces have a “no photo” sign.
You: Okay, no flash. What about the special exhibition?
Staff: Same, but they’re stricter in there. There’s one room at the end where photos aren’t allowed at all.
You: Good to know. Where’s the café, by the way?
Staff: Ground floor, past the gift shop. Drinks are fine in the galleries as long as they have a lid.
You: Thanks. That’s everything.
Staff: No problem. Enjoy your visit.

App(Download the app and it's free.)。
Can I leave a credit card instead?
4. No flash
Coordinator(咨询台的协调员) You(只有一下午时间,想听讲解)
Coordinator: Hi, are you here for the tour?
You: I was thinking about it. When’s the next one?
Coordinator: There’s one at two o’clock. It’s about an hour.
You: Is it free, or do I need a ticket?
Coordinator: It’s free with admission. You just show up — no reservation.
You: Oh, nice. Where does it start?
Coordinator: Right here, at the sign. The docent comes and gets everybody.
You: What’s a docent, exactly? Sorry — I’ve seen the word but I’m not sure.
Coordinator: No problem. A docent is a volunteer guide. They’re trained, but they’re not staff — they just love the museum.
You: Oh, so they’re volunteers. That’s nice. What do they cover?
Coordinator: It’s a highlights tour — the ten or twelve most famous pieces. You get the big ones in an hour.
You: That’s exactly what I need. I only have the afternoon. Do I need to sign up?
Coordinator: You can put your name down here, but honestly you can just join.
You: Okay, I’ll sign up anyway. How big is the group usually?
Coordinator: Ten to fifteen people. Sometimes smaller.
You: Can I ask questions during it?
Coordinator: Please do. That’s the best part. Just don’t be offended if they have to keep moving.
You: Got it. Oh — do you do private tours? My parents are visiting next month.
Coordinator: We do, but you have to book those ahead of time, and there’s a fee.
You: And if they just want to walk around on their own?
Coordinator: That’s self-guided. Pick up a map at the info desk, or use the audio guide.
You: Perfect. So, two o’clock right here?
Coordinator: Two o’clock, right here. Come five minutes early so you don’t miss the start.
You: Will do. Thanks for explaining.

Is this tour free of charge or not? | 太绕,口语里没人这么说 | Is it free, or do I need a ticket? |
1. docent
2. highlights tour
讲解员时间有限,they have to keep moving,所以别指望在一个展品前聊二十分钟。
Docen(带团的志愿讲解员) You(跟团参观,边听边问)
Docen: Any questions so far?
You: Yeah, I’ve got one. Who painted this one?
Docen: This is by an American painter, from around the 1890s. It’s one of the pieces people come here for.
You: Why is it so famous?
Docen: Partly the size — it’s huge — and partly the light. Look at how the sun comes through that window.
You: Oh, I see it. It almost looks like a photograph.
Docen: Right. That was the big thing at the time — painters trying to catch a moment exactly like that.
You: Is this the original, or a copy?
Docen: It’s the original. Copies are usually labeled — you’ll see “after” or “reproduction” on the label.
You: Good to know. So if the label says “after,” it’s a copy?
Docen: Usually, yeah. Museums are pretty careful about that.
You: And what about the one next to it? It looks older.
Docen: That’s from the 1600s. Different century, same room — that happens a lot.
You: Can I take a picture of this one?
Docen: Sure. Just no flash — the light damages the paint over time.
You: No flash. Can I get closer?
Docen: As close as you want, but don’t touch. The oil from your fingers stays on the surface.
You: I won’t. I saw someone touch a statue earlier.
Docen: It happens. The guards will say something, but they’d rather you just not.
You: Makes sense. What’s the story behind this one? Is there one?
Docen: There is. People hated it when it was first shown.
You: Really? And now it’s famous.
Docen: That happens more than you’d think. A lot of famous pieces were failures at first.
You: That’s funny. Last one — where should I go after this?
Docen: If you only have an hour, go to the third floor. That’s where the big ones are.
You: Great. Thank you — this was really good.
Docen: Glad you liked it. Enjoy the rest of the museum.

Who painted this?(谁画的)、When was this made?(什么年代)、What's the story behind it?(背后的故事)、Why is it so famous?(为什么有名)。
4. Any questions so far?
Clerk(票务处的职员) You(已经网上买了票,但想搞清楚折扣)
Clerk: Hi, is this your first time here?
You: Yeah. I already bought a ticket online, but I had a question about discounts.
Clerk: Sure, go ahead.
You: Do you have a student discount?
Clerk: We do — with a student ID, it’s a few dollars off.
You: Does it have to be a US student ID? Mine’s from a university in China.
Clerk: It depends on who’s at the desk, honestly. Some of us take any current student ID.
You: Okay. So it’s worth asking, but I shouldn’t count on it.
Clerk: Right. And there’s a senior discount too, and kids under twelve are free.
You: Good to know. Oh — I saw a sign that says “suggested donation.” Is that this museum?
Clerk: That’s the small building across the street. This one’s a set ticket price.
You: So how do you tell the difference? I never know with those signs.
Clerk: If it’s required, it says “admission” and there’s a price on it. If it says “suggested,” you can give what you want.
You: So with a suggested donation, can you give nothing?
Clerk: You can. Nobody’s going to stop you. Most people give something, but it’s up to you.
You: That’s good to know. Do you have free days here?
Clerk: We do — the first Friday of the month is free in the evening.
You: Is it crowded?
Clerk: Very. If you can come right when it opens, it’s a lot better.
You: Okay. And do you have a membership? Would that be worth it?
Clerk: If you come more than twice a year, yeah. It pays for itself, and you skip the line.
You: Good to know. I might come back with my parents.
Clerk: Then ask at the membership desk before you leave — they can tell you what’s included.
You: I will. Thanks — that was really helpful.
Clerk: No problem. Enjoy your visit.

| 免费日 | Do you have free days?
| 学生 / 老人折扣 | Do you have a student discount?
| 会员 | Would a membership be worth it?

1. museum
a guided tour、the next tour 里的 tour 都是这个音。
suggested 是 /səˈdʒɛstɪd/,deposit 是 /dəˈpɑzɪt/。
Do you have a student discount?
