What do I need to bring?
| 电子书和电子有声书(用 App 借) | e-books(Libby、Hoopla 这类 App) |
借还规则里,有几个词必须认识:check out(借出,也能当结账用)、due date(到期日)、renew(续借,一般可以自己在网上续几次)、return(还,很多馆门口有 drop box 还书箱,不用进馆)、hold / place a hold(书被借走了,排队预约)、interlibrary loan(馆际互借,让馆员从别的馆调书过来)。
Do you charge late fines?
会议室要分清两种:study room(小组学习室,一般免费,但要预约,而且有时间限制,常见是两小时)和 meeting room / conference room(更正式,要预约,有的要押金)。 How long can we have it?(能待多久)、Is there a projector in there?(有投影吗)、Is there a whiteboard?(有白板吗)。
Do you have an English conversation group?—— 英语角。 What else can I borrow with this card?—— 一次问清所有能借的东西,包括博物馆门票和工具。
Librarian(图书馆馆员) You(新搬到这个城市,第一次来办卡)
Librarian: Hi there, how can I help you today?
You: Hi. I just moved here and I’d like to get a library card.
Librarian: Great, welcome. Do you live in the city, or just outside?
You: In the city. I’m renting an apartment off Main Street.
Librarian: Perfect, then it’s free. What do I need to bring — I mean, what do you need from me?
Librarian: Two things. A photo ID, and something that proves your address.
You: Photo ID I have — my passport. But proof of address, uh… all my bills still go to my old place.
Librarian: That happens a lot. Anything with your name and the new address on it works. A lease, a bank statement, even a piece of mail you received.
You: Mail. Okay, that I have. I got an envelope from the bank yesterday — I just never opened it.
Librarian: That’ll do it. And do you have the envelope with you right now?
You: Yeah, it’s in my bag. Hang on… here.
Librarian: Perfect. Let me get you set up. Fill this out — name, address, phone number, and a signature at the bottom.
You: Got it. …Okay, done. Oh, and I noticed there was a fee line on the form. Am I paying something?
Librarian: Not for city residents, no. That line is for people who live outside the city — they pay a yearly fee. You’re all set.
You: Good to know. So can I borrow something today, or do I have to wait for the card in the mail?
Librarian: Today. You’re getting the card right now — I’ll print it in a second. And you can use it at any branch in the system.
You: Oh nice. And one more thing — do you charge late fines? I’m terrible at remembering due dates.
Librarian: We’re fine-free now. No late fees. If something’s really late, your account just gets blocked until you bring it back.
You: That’s a relief. So worst case I just can’t borrow more.
Librarian: Exactly. Anything else?

|---|---|---|
I want to make a library card. | 中文「办卡」直译,英语不用 make | I'd like to get a library card. |
Can I do a card? | do a card 不是英语 | Can I sign up for a library card? |
I have no bill, so I cannot do it. | 语法生硬,而且事实上不止账单能证明 | All my bills go to my old address — is there anything else I can use? |
My address is not here. | 意思不清 | I just moved, so my mail still goes to the old place. |
You need what document? | 语序错误,像质问 | What do I need to bring? |
How much money for the card? | 太生硬 | Is there a fee for the card? |
I will borrow book today? | 缺冠词,疑问句结构错 | Can I borrow something today? |
Give me the card. | 像命令 | Could I get the card today? |
I forget the date, what happen? | 时态和结构都错 | What happens if I forget the due date? |
You have penalty? | penalty 是法律词,图书馆不说这个 | Do you charge late fines? |
What do I need to bring — I mean, what do you need from me? Sorry, let me rephrase that.
2. That'll do it 是「这就够了」。
馆员说 That'll do it.
3. fine-free
5. branch
Librarian(图书馆馆员) You(家里网络断了,想借热点;顺便想借工具)
You: Hi. So my internet’s been out since yesterday, and someone told me you lend out hotspots. Is that right?
Librarian: We do. Wi-Fi hotspots, laptops, iPads — it’s all part of our library of things.
You: Library of things. Okay, I’ve never heard that term. So what else is in there?
Librarian: Tools, musical instruments, board games, DVDs, museum passes… honestly, the list is long.
You: Wait, museum passes? Like, free tickets to museums?
Librarian: Free or discounted, depending on the museum. You check one out like a book and bring it back.
You: That’s amazing. My parents are visiting next month — that would save us a fortune. Okay, back to the hotspot. How long can I keep it?
Librarian: Two weeks, and it can’t be renewed, because there’s usually a waitlist for them.
You: Got it. And is there a waitlist right now? Like, could I get one today?
Librarian: Let me check… We have one in. So you’re in luck.
You: Oh, great. Does it need a deposit or anything?
Librarian: No deposit, but you sign an agreement that says you’ll pay for it if it’s lost or damaged.
You: That’s fair. And the laptop — do those go home too, or only in the building?
Librarian: Both, actually. We have laptops you can take home for a couple of weeks, and a few that stay in the building.
You: Good to know. And the tools — that’s the one I really can’t believe.
Librarian: A drill, a saw, a sewing machine, a cake pan… people borrow all of it. Some branches have a seed library too.
You: Seeds? Like, to plant?
Librarian: Yeah — you take seeds in the spring and bring seeds back in the fall, if you can.
You: That’s such a good idea. Okay, one more — do you have e-books? My sister keeps telling me about some app.
Librarian: We do. Libby and Hoopla are the two most libraries use. You log in with your card number.
You: Perfect. So can I set that up here, or do I do it at home?
Librarian: Either one. But while you’re here, I can walk you through it. Takes two minutes.
You: Let’s do it. Thanks — this is way more than I expected from a library.
Librarian: People say that a lot. Ready when you are.

| Do you lend out hotspots? | lend out = 外借 |
| It’s all part of our library of things. | library of things 是关键词 |
| Tools, musical instruments, board games, museum passes. |
| You check one out like a book. | check out = 借出 |

| We have one in.
| You’re in luck. |
| Does it need a deposit?
| You sign an agreement. |
| Do those go home too?
| I can walk you through it. | walk sb through = 一步步教 |
1. library of things
What else can I borrow with this card?
Is there a waitlist? 和 Could I get on the waitlist?
3. You're in luck 和 We have one in 是一个意思。
We have one in, so you're in luck.
Does it need a deposit?
5. walk you through it 是「一步步带你做」。
I'll walk you through it. 这时候最好的回答是 Let's do it.
Coordinator(社区中心协调员) You(想报免费 ESL 课,顺便问孩子的游泳课)
Coordinator: Hi, are you here to register for something?
You: Yeah. A friend told me you have free English classes here. Is that still going on?
Coordinator: Every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Are you looking at the beginner class or the conversation group?
You: Honestly, I don’t know what level I am. I can read okay, but speaking — that’s the hard part.
Coordinator: Then I’d start with the conversation group. It’s all speaking, no textbook, no tests.
You: No tests. That sounds like my kind of class. How many people are usually in it?
Coordinator: Anywhere from six to fifteen. It depends on the week.
You: Okay. So how do I sign up? Do I need to fill out an application?
Coordinator: Just this registration form — name, address, phone, and whether you’re a city resident.
You: Does it matter if I’m not a resident? I am, but my cousin might want to come too.
Coordinator: Residents are free. Non-residents pay a small fee for some programs. The English classes are free either way.
You: Good, I’ll tell her. And the citizenship class — do you have one of those? My aunt’s been asking.
Coordinator: We do, but that one fills up fast. It’s on the waitlist right now, actually.
You: So she’d have to wait. How does the waitlist work?
Coordinator: You put your name down, and we call you if a seat opens up. People do drop out.
You: Got it. I’ll have her call. Now — different question. I saw a pool outside. Do you do swimming lessons?
Coordinator: We do, for kids and adults. Were you thinking about yourself or a child?
You: My son. He’s seven. He can’t swim at all — he’s scared of the water, honestly.
Coordinator: Then the beginner class is the right one. Saturday mornings, half an hour.
You: Half an hour seems short.
Coordinator: For beginners it’s about right. They get tired fast, and the water’s cold.
You: Fair enough. Do I need to bring anything? A swim cap, goggles?
Coordinator: Goggles, yes. A cap depends on the pool rules — I’d bring one just in case.
You: Okay. And is there a fee for the swim class?
Coordinator: For residents it’s a small per-session fee. I’ll print the schedule so you can see it.
You: Please. And can I sign him up today, or do we have to wait for the next session?
Coordinator: You can do it today. The next session starts in two weeks, so you’re right on time.
You: Perfect. Let me fill that out now.

|---|---|---|
I want to apply the English class. | apply 后面缺 for,而且报课不用 apply | I'd like to sign up for the English class. |
I want to report a class. | report 是「报告、举报」,跟报名无关 | I'd like to register for a class. |
The class is full, so I go home. | 听到满了就走,白丢机会 | The class is full — is there a waitlist? |
My English is very poor. | 美国人很少这样说自己,听着像求安慰 | I can read okay, but speaking is the hard part. |
Can I learn swim? | 语法错误,learn 后面不加动词原形 | Do you offer swimming lessons? |
How many money? | 不存在的说法 | Is there a fee for that? |
I want my son join. | want sb do 是错的 | I'd like to sign my son up. |
Is free? | 缺主语和动词 | Is it free for residents? |
I am the city people. | 中式直译 | I'm a city resident. |
You have seat? | 缺冠词,太生硬 | Is there still space in that class? |
报课、报班、报夏令营,美国人都说 register for 或 sign up for。
It's full 不是终点。 一句 Is there a waitlist?
3. conversation group
Do you have an English conversation group?
报名表上那一栏 whether you're a city resident 就是干这个用的。
5. Fair enough
Librarian(图书馆馆员) You(跟三个同学要做小组作业,需要一个能说话的屋子)
You: Hi. My study group needs a room where we can actually talk. Do you have study rooms here?
Librarian: We do — eight of them on this floor. How many people are you?
You: Four. And we’re not quiet people, I’ll be honest. We’ll be talking the whole time.
Librarian: That’s exactly what the study rooms are for. The quiet floor is downstairs.
You: Oh good. I was worried we’d get shushed.
Librarian: Not in there. Do you want to reserve one?
You: Yeah. Can I reserve a study room for two o’clock?
Librarian: Two o’clock today? Let me look… Room four is open. How long do you need it?
You: Two hours would be ideal. Is that allowed?
Librarian: Two hours is the limit per group, and you can’t book back-to-back. If nobody’s waiting, you can stay a little longer.
You: So how long can we have it — exactly two hours, or is it flexible?
Librarian: The reservation is two hours. After that, come ask me. If the room’s still free, you’re fine.
You: Got it. And is there a projector in there? We have to present slides.
Librarian: Room four has a screen and an HDMI cable, but no projector. Room seven has the projector — but it’s booked until four.
You: Hmm. So we could do two to four in room four without a projector, or four to six in room seven with one.
Librarian: That’s right. Which works better for your group?
You: Let me think… Half of us have class at five, so four o’clock is too late. We’ll take room four and bring our own laptop.
Librarian: Good call. Do you want a whiteboard marker? We keep them at the desk.
You: Oh, there’s a whiteboard too? Yeah, we’ll take two markers. Do I need to give you my card?
Librarian: Card or ID, just so we know who has the room. And I’ll put your name and phone number in the system.
You: Sure. Wang Wei. And if we’re late, does the room get given away?
Wang Wei。
Librarian: After ten minutes we do give it to the next person. So try to be on time.
You: We’ll be there. And what about food and drinks? Can we bring coffee in?
Librarian: Drinks with a lid, yes. No food — we had a carpet incident.
You: Ha, understood. Okay, so room four, two to four, four people, name Wang Wei.
Librarian: That’s it. You’re all set. Come grab me if you need anything.

Are we okay to stay a bit longer?
Is there a projector in there? What's in the room?,让馆员一次报完。
Come grab me if you need anything. 美式口语里 grab 用得极广:grab a seat(找个座)、grab a coffee(买杯咖啡)、grab a form(拿张表)。
Librarian(图书馆馆员) You(刚听说图书馆有一堆免费服务,想一次问全)
You: Hi. Someone at my church told me the library does taxes for free. Is that true?
Librarian: During tax season, yes. Volunteers come in and help people file. It’s a program called VITA — and AARP does one too.
You: Free? Like, I don’t pay anything?
Librarian: Free. It’s for people with simpler returns, though. If you own a business, they’ll send you somewhere else.
You: My return’s pretty simple. Okay, that’s huge. What else do you have that people don’t know about?
Librarian: Printing, computer lab, the copy machine, notary service at some branches, job help… where do you want to start?
You: Notary? You mean like for documents?
Librarian: Yeah, some branches have a notary on staff. Call ahead, because it depends on who’s working.
You: Good to know. Okay, printing. How does that work? Do I pay per page?
Librarian: You get a set number of free pages each week, and after that it’s a few cents a page.
You: And how do I send the file? Email it to you?
Librarian: You can email it to our print address, or log into a computer here and print from there. Both work.
You: Got it. Now — job help. What does that actually mean?
Librarian: Someone helps you build a resume, practice for an interview, and search for openings. Usually by appointment.
You: That’s exactly what I need. My resume is from my old country and it’s useless here.
Librarian: That’s really common. Ask for the career desk when you call. And there’s a conversation group too, if speaking is the issue.
You: Yeah, someone mentioned that. What day is it?
Librarian: Wednesday nights. It’s drop-in, so you don’t have to sign up.
You: Drop-in — that’s even better. And legal help? I keep hearing that libraries have lawyers.
Librarian: Some do — a free legal clinic a couple times a month, mostly for housing and immigration questions. It varies a lot by branch.
You: Okay, so I should ask here first.
Librarian: Ask here, and if we don’t have it, we’ll tell you who does. That’s half of what we do.
You: Last thing — do you do anything for kids? My daughter’s four.
Librarian: Story time on Saturday mornings. Songs, a picture book, and a craft. She’d love it.
You: And it’s free? Do I need to register her?
Librarian: Free, and no registration. Just show up a few minutes early, because it gets crowded.
You: Amazing. Okay, I’m going to write all of this down. Thanks so much.
Librarian: Of course. And check the bulletin board by the door — that’s where we post everything.

VITA(Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)和 AARP 的报税志愿服务是美国最常见的两个免费报税渠道,报税季在很多图书馆、社区中心设点。用词要点:报税表叫 return,报税这个动作叫 file——file your taxes、file a return。
2. return
How many free pages do I get?,一次问清。
和它相对的是 by appointment(要预约)。
It varies a lot by branch. Which branch has that?

1. library
2. I'd like to 连读成一个音块。
I'd like to get a library card 里,I'd like to 三词几乎连成一个:/aɪdˈlaɪktə/。
3. Can I 在口语里读成 Can I 的连读形式。
Can I reserve a study room? 里 Can I 听起来像 Can-eye(/kænaɪ/)。 同样,Do you 常读成 D'you。
Can I borrow something today?(能不能)句尾上扬;How long can I keep it?(问多久)句尾下降。
6. 数字和时间读法:两点整说 two o'clock,不要说 two point。
two to four 表示「两点到四点」。 Room four, two to four
