  3. 问出下一步——What's the next step? 或者 Who should I follow up with?

So what do you do?(你是做什么的)。

Dana(某科技公司招聘官,站在展位后面) You(求职者,前端工程师,想换工作)

You: Hi there. How’s the fair going for you guys today?

Dana: Oh, busy. It’s been nonstop since ten.

You: I bet. I’m Wei, by the way. Nice to meet you.

Dana: Nice to meet you, Wei. I’m Dana, I handle engineering hiring here.

You: Oh, great — that’s actually what I’m here for. Do you have a minute?

Dana: Sure, go ahead.

You: So I’m a front-end engineer — about four years in. I mostly work on React apps, and right now I’m at a health-tech startup where I lead the web team. I’m looking to move into a bigger engineering org. What kind of roles are you hiring for right now?

Dana: Wow, okay. We’ve got a couple of senior front-end openings, actually. Do you have a resume with you?

You: Yeah, right here. Here’s a copy — and my portfolio’s on there too, and my GitHub.

Dana: Great, thanks. Let me look… okay, React, TypeScript, and you’ve done design systems. That’s exactly what we’re looking for.

You: Yeah, I built ours from scratch about a year ago. It was a lot of work, but it’s paid off.

Dana: I can imagine. So what are you looking for in your next role — is it team size, or the product?

You: Honestly, mostly scope. I want to work on something with more users, and I’d like to stay on the technical track rather than go into management.

Dana: That’s good to know. A lot of people say they want management, and then they hate it.

You: Ha — yeah, I’ve watched that happen. So what’s the next step on your end?

Dana: Apply online and put my name in the referral field. Then I’ll flag it on my side. Do you have a card?

You: I don’t have cards, but — can I connect with you on LinkedIn?

Dana: Yeah, of course. Here, I’ll pull up my profile — just scan that.

You: Got it. Just sent the request. And I’ll apply tonight.

Dana: Perfect. Put my name in there so it comes to me, and if you don’t hear anything in a week, message me on LinkedIn.

You: A week. Got it. Thanks, Dana — this was really helpful.

Dana: You too, Wei. Good luck!

I’m a front-end engineer, about four years in.
I mostly work on React apps. mostly 比 only 自然
I’m at a health-tech startup where I lead the web team.
I’m looking to move into a bigger engineering org.
What kind of roles are you hiring for?
Do you have a minute?
Here’s a copy of my resume.
What’s the next step?
Who should I follow up with?
Can I connect with you on LinkedIn?
Put my name in the referral field.
If you don’t hear anything in a week, message me.

I'm a front-end engineer, about four years in.
I mostly work on React apps, and I built our design system.
I'm looking to move into a bigger engineering org.
What kind of roles are you hiring for right now?

I am a engineer. I'm an engineer.
Please give me a chance. I'd love to be considered for the role.
My English is not good, sorry.
I want to find a job. I'm looking for a senior front-end role.
This is my resume, please read.像命令Here's a copy of my resume.
Can I have your phone number? Can I connect with you on LinkedIn?
I will wait for your good news. I'll follow up next week if I don't hear back.
I very interest in this position. I'm very interested in this position.
Please forgive my poor English. Could you say that a little slower?
I am sorry to bother you. Do you have a minute?

2. referral

Put my name in the referral field.

What are you looking for in your next role? 这时候一定要给具体方向(more scope、a bigger team、technical track)。

It was a lot of work, but it's paid off.

How much does this pay? What's the salary range for this role?——用 range,不用具体数字,而且通常在对方主动联系你之后再问。

Dana(招聘官) You(求职者,想弄清这个岗位到底干什么)

You: Hey Dana, it’s Wei again. I did the application last night, actually.

Dana: Oh, nice. That was fast.

You: Yeah, I didn’t want to sit on it. Do you have a couple more minutes? I had a few questions about the team.

Dana: Sure, shoot.

You: So first — how big is the team I’d be on?

Dana: The front-end group is eight people, and it’s split across two products.

You: Eight. And who would I report to?

Dana: A front-end lead, and then the engineering manager above him.

You: Okay, so it’s not a flat structure. What does the day-to-day actually look like — is it mostly writing code, or a lot of meetings?

Dana: Honestly, it’s maybe eighty percent code. There’s a standup in the morning, a planning meeting every other week, and that’s mostly it.

You: That sounds reasonable. And what’s the culture like? I’ve worked somewhere where everything had to go through three approvals, and it drove me crazy.

Dana: Ha — no, we’re not like that. Engineers can ship to production without asking. That’s kind of the point of hiring senior people.

You: Okay, that’s a big point for me. What about growth — is there a path if someone wants to stay technical?

Dana: There is. We have a technical track that goes up to principal. It’s newer, so it’s not as well trodden as the management path, but it’s real.

You: Good to know. And the product — is it something I’d have to explain to my friends, or is it consumer-facing?

Dana: Somewhere in between. It’s a tool for clinics, so the users are doctors and nurses. Not consumer, but very concrete.

You: That’s actually appealing. I’ve been in health tech for four years, so that’s familiar.

Dana: Oh, that’s a plus. That’ll come through in the interview.

You: One more — what’s the timeline? When would I hear something?

Dana: We’re screening this week and starting interviews next week. So probably within ten days.

You: Okay. So I shouldn’t expect anything before Friday.

Dana: Right. And I flagged your application this morning, so you’re in the pile that gets looked at first.

You: Oh, that’s great. Thanks, Dana. That answers pretty much everything.

Dana: No problem. If anything else comes up, message me on LinkedIn.

Do you have a couple more minutes?
I had a few questions about the team.
Sure, shoot.
How big is the team I’d be on?
Who would I report to?
What does the day-to-day look like?
Is it mostly writing code, or a lot of meetings?
What’s the culture like?
Is there a path if someone wants to stay technical?
It’s not as well trodden as the management path.
Is it consumer-facing?
What’s the timeline?
When would I hear something?
I flagged your application.

What does a typical week look like?

1. Sure, shoot.

比 Please ask your questions 自然一百倍。

What does the day-to-day look like?

I've worked somewhere where everything went through three approvals 这句话,既说明了你在意什么,也让对方用具体例子回答,而不是给你一句 Good culture。

4. That's a plus

That'll come through in the interview

What's the timeline?

Alex(同行,另一家公司的工程师,活动上刚认识) You(求职者)

Alex: So what do you do?

You: I’m a front-end engineer. I work at a health-tech startup over in Cambridge.

Alex: Oh nice. What’s the stack?

You: React and TypeScript on the front end, Node on the back. Nothing too exotic.

Alex: That’s basically us too. How big is your team?

You: Six engineers. I lead the web side. What about you?

Alex: I’m at a bigger place — about eighty engineers. I do platform work, mostly infrastructure.

You: Oh, so you’re the person everyone blames when the deploy breaks.

Alex: Ha! Yeah, that’s me. It’s a living.

You: I’ve actually been thinking about moving toward platform stuff. How’d you get into it?

Alex: Kind of by accident. I was on a product team and nobody wanted to own the CI pipeline, so I took it. Turned out I liked it.

You: That’s a good way in. Are you guys hiring?

Alex: We are, actually. Not sure about platform specifically, but I can check. Send me your resume and I’ll forward it to our team.

You: That’d be great. What’s the best way to reach you — LinkedIn?

Alex: LinkedIn’s best, yeah. Let me find you. What’s your name again?

You: Wei Zhang. Z-H-A-N-G. I’m the only one with that photo, I promise.

Alex: Ha, found you. Just sent a request.

You: Got it — accepted. I’ll send you my resume tomorrow morning. Thanks, Alex.

Alex: No problem. Hey, this thing’s wrapping up — you sticking around for the mixer?

You: I’ve got to run, actually. But let’s keep in touch.

Alex: For sure. Good meeting you, Wei.

You: You too. Have a good one.

So what do you do?
What’s the stack?
What about you?
How’d you get into that?
Are you guys hiring?
What’s the best way to reach you? Can I have your number? 安全
LinkedIn’s best.LinkedIn
Let me find you.
Let’s connect.
Let’s keep in touch.
Good meeting you. 比 Nice to meet you 更适合活动场合
You sticking around for the mixer?

Let's connect on LinkedIn.
What's the best way to reach you?
Can I connect with you on LinkedIn?
Can I have your number?
Let me give you my card.

1. So what do you do?

I'm a front-end engineer at a health-tech startup.

2. Let's connect 比 Let's be friends 专业一百倍。

Let's connect — I'll send you a request.

3. It's a living.

Somebody's gotta do it.

4. Are you guys hiring?

Wei Zhang. Z-H-A-N-G.

You(求职者,招聘会后第二天) Dana(招聘官,收到你的 LinkedIn 消息)

You: Hi Dana — great meeting you at the career fair yesterday. I applied for the senior front-end role last night and put your name in the referral field.

Dana: Thanks for the heads up. I see it in the system.

You: Perfect. No rush at all — just wanted to stay on your radar. One quick thing, if you have a second.

Dana: Sure.

You: I noticed the posting mentions design systems. That’s the part of my current job I’ve spent the most time on — I built ours from scratch. Is that a big part of this role, or more of a nice-to-have?

Dana: It’s a real part of it. The team’s been wanting to redo theirs for a while, so that’s relevant.

You: Good to know. That’s useful — I’ll make sure to bring it up if I get an interview.

Dana: Yeah, definitely do.

You: Thanks. I’ll leave you alone now — I know you’ve got a stack of these.

Dana: Ha, you’re not wrong. I’ll be in touch either way.

You: Hi Dana — just following up on my application for the senior front-end role. No rush at all. Is there anything else you need from me?

Dana: Hey Wei. Sorry for the silence — we had a hiring freeze for a few days. It lifted yesterday, so screening’s back on.

You: Oh, no worries at all. That explains it.

Dana: I should have something for you by the end of next week.

You: Great. Thanks for letting me know — I’d rather hear “next week” than nothing.

Dana: Fair. Okay, talk soon.

You: Thanks again, Dana.

Great meeting you at the career fair yesterday.
I applied for the senior front-end role.
I put your name in the referral field.
Thanks for the heads up.
No rush at all — just wanted to stay on your radar.
One quick thing, if you have a second.
Is that a big part of this role, or more of a nice-to-have?
I’ll make sure to bring it up.
I’ll leave you alone now.
I know you’ve got a stack of these.
Just following up on my application. follow up 是跟进
Sorry for the silence.
I’d rather hear “next week” than nothing.

Great meeting you yesterday.
I applied and put your name in.
Just following up — no rush at all.
Wanted to share a quick update…

I noticed the posting mentions design systems…

2. No rush at all 是跟进必备的缓冲词。

3. stay on your radar

对应的是 must-have(硬性要求)。问 Is that a must-have or nice-to-have?

Alex(同行,活动上认识,现在答应和你喝杯咖啡) You(求职者,想了解平台方向怎么转)

You: Hey Alex, thanks for making time. I know it’s a Saturday.

Alex: No problem. I’m around here anyway. How’ve you been?

You: Good. Busy, but good. So — I said I wanted to ask about moving into platform work. Is now still an okay time?

Alex: Yeah, go ahead. What are you trying to figure out?

You: Mostly whether it’s realistic. I’ve been doing front-end for four years, and honestly I like it, but I feel like I’m plateauing.

Alex: Plateauing how?

You: The problems are the same size. I’m not learning much anymore. And the platform people seem to deal with harder problems.

Alex: Okay, so here’s the honest version. It’s doable, but it’s not a lateral move — it’s closer to starting over for a year.

You: A year. What makes it that long?

Alex: Because you’re going from “my code works” to “everyone’s code works.” That’s a different mindset. Networking, CI, on-call, infrastructure as code — you can learn the tools in a month, but the judgment takes longer.

You: That’s a useful way to put it. What would you actually do in my position?

Alex: Two things. First, volunteer for the unglamorous infra work on your own team — CI, deploy scripts, monitoring. Nobody wants it, so you’ll get it. Second, find something that’s broken and fix it end to end, then write it up.

You: Write it up where?

Alex: A design doc, or a blog post. The point is that you can explain the tradeoffs, not just that you did it. That’s what interviewers look for.

You: Okay. That’s concrete. How long do you think that takes before I could apply for a platform role?

Alex: Six months if you’re deliberate about it. A year if you just wait for it to happen.

You: Six months. Okay. And when I do apply — does the front-end background hurt me?

Alex: It hurts if you can’t talk about systems. It helps if you can, because you’ll actually care whether the developer experience is good. A lot of infra people don’t.

You: Ha. That’s encouraging, actually. Can I ask you one more thing — would you be open to looking at a design doc when I write one?

Alex: Sure, send it over. I’ll tell you if it’s any good.

You: That’s all I need. Thanks, Alex. This was a lot more useful than the stuff I’ve been reading online.

Alex: Ha. Online is fine, it’s just generic. Anyway — I’ve got to run, but let’s do this again sometime.

You: Definitely. I’ll send you that doc in a month or two.

(I'll send you that doc)

1. coffee chat

2. What would you actually do in my position?

Would you be open to looking at a design doc? 比 Can you mentor me?

4. plateauing

I feel like I'm plateauing

5. lateral move

It's not a lateral move — it's closer to starting over,意思是转方向要接受一段时间"降级"。

I'll send you that doc in a month or two.

Here's a copy of my resume 时念 REH-zoo-may,招聘官立刻知道你说的是简历。

3. What about you?

4. I'd love to 比 I want to 礼貌得多。

I'd love to be considered for the role 里的 I'd love to 读得快而轻,是美式礼貌的标准开头。

说年限 about four years in、职位名 senior front-end role 时放慢、重读。

What about you? / What do you think?——不问回去,对话就死了
