What are we doing today?,如果你只会说 Shorter, please.,结果基本不可控——因为 shorter 对理发师来说可能意味着短五厘米。
Take about two inches off 是明确指令;take five centimeters off 会让理发师停下来算,然后大概率剪多。
Let me show you a picture.
|---|---|
Just a trim. |
Take about two inches off.
Short on the sides, a little longer on top. |
Can you leave the bangs alone? |
I'm growing it out.
What are we doing today?
About this much.
Let me show you a picture.
Could you take a little more off the top?
Stylist(理发师) You(顾客,三个月没剪了,第一次来这家店)
Stylist: Hi, do you have an appointment?
You: No, I don’t. Do you take walk-ins?
Stylist: We do. It’ll be about fifteen minutes. Go ahead and have a seat.
You: Thanks.
Stylist: Okay, I’m ready for you. Come on over. So what are we doing today?
You: Just a trim — I’m growing it out, so I don’t want to lose much length. Let me show you a picture.
Stylist: Oh perfect, that helps a lot. Let me see.
You: See how it’s got a little bit of layering at the ends, but it’s still one length overall?
Stylist: Yeah, I see it. So you want to keep the length and just clean up the ends?
You: Exactly. Maybe an inch and a half off the bottom. And short on the sides, a little longer on top.
Stylist: Got it. What about the bangs — leave those alone?
You: Please. I’m trying to grow those out too.
Stylist: Say no more. Okay — is this your natural color?
You: It is, yeah. I was thinking about highlights, but maybe not today.
Stylist: We can always do that next time. Okay, one more thing — how do you usually wear it? Do you blow dry it or let it air dry?
You: Mostly air dry. I don’t have the patience for a blowout.
Stylist: That changes how I cut it, so good to know. If you air dry, I’ll cut it so it falls right without much work.
You: That’s exactly what I want. Oh — and one thing I should mention. My last cut was a little uneven on the left side. Can you check that?
Stylist: Yeah, I can see it. I’ll even that out. Thanks for telling me — most people don’t.
You: I figured it’s easier to fix if you know about it.
Stylist: Definitely. Okay, let’s get you shampooed first. Come on back.
Stylist: Okay, take a look. What do you think?
You: Ooh — it looks good. Thanks.
Stylist: Great. Front desk will take care of you.
You: Sounds good. Oh — do you take card?
Stylist: We do. And you can add the tip on the card, too.
You: Perfect. And can I grab a card from you? I’d like to book with you again.
Stylist: Sure, here. Just ask for me by name when you call.

| an inch off | 剪一寸 | 1 inch ≈ 2.5 cm |
| an inch and a half | 一寸半 | |
| two inches off | 剪两寸 | 2 inches ≈ 5 cm |
| short on the sides | 两边短 | |
| a little longer on top | 顶部留长一点 | |
| clean up the ends | 把发尾修干净 | |
| even it out | 修齐 | |
| not too short | 别剪太短 | 保险句 |
不确定长度就在手指上比出来:About this much.
1 inch ≈ 2.5 cm,2 inches ≈ 5 cm。Just a trim 大概是半寸到一寸。
What are we doing today?
同类还有 What are we thinking?(更随意)、What can I do for you today?
3. bangs
Can you leave the bangs alone? 和 Just trim the bangs a little 是两个最常用的说法。
My last cut was a little uneven on the left side — can you check that?
Can I grab a card from you? 或者 Can I book with you specifically?——美国理发店通常可以指定人。
Stylist(理发师) You(顾客,刚剪完,照镜子发现顶部太厚)
Stylist: Okay, take a look. What do you think?
You: Ooh — it’s nice. Hmm. Actually, could you take a little more off the top? It feels a bit heavy up there.
Stylist: Sure, that’s easy. How about like this?
You: Yeah, that’s better. That’s what I meant.
Stylist: Okay. Anything else you want me to fix while you’re in the chair?
You: Let me look again… The back’s a little longer on this side than the other. Is that fixable?
Stylist: Let me see. …Yeah, you’re right, I can see it. Let me even that out.
You: Thanks. I only noticed because I wear it tucked behind my ears.
Stylist: That’s useful — I’ll remember that for next time. Anything else?
You: No, I think that’s it. Let me check the back with the mirror.
Stylist: Here, I’ll hold it up for you.
You: Oh, that’s good. Yeah, that’s even.
Stylist: Great. Sorry about the extra round — I should’ve checked the back before you got up.
You: No, it’s fine. I’d rather say something than go home and be annoyed about it for a month.
Stylist: Honestly, I wish more people did. Most people just quietly never come back.
You: Ha. Well, that seems like a waste. It was a good cut otherwise.
Stylist: Appreciate that. Okay — front desk is up there.
You: Thanks. Oh, one thing — if I want it a little shorter next time, how should I say it?
Stylist: Just say “half an inch shorter than last time.” I keep notes on regulars, so I’ll know where we started.
You: Half an inch shorter than last time. Got it.

|---|---|
The shape is great. / It looks nice overall. |
The top feels a bit heavy. / The back's longer on this side. |
| 3. 描述感受,不评价人 | It feels a bit heavy up there.(不说 You cut it wrong) |
Could you take a little more off? / Is there anything you can do? |
That's what I meant.
|---|---|---|
Cut two centimeters. | 美国理发师对厘米没概念 | Take about an inch off. |
Cut a little. | 太模糊,理发师只能猜 | Just a trim — about an inch off the ends. |
Don't cut too much. | 说了但没给标准 | Leave the length — just clean up the ends. |
I want short hair. | 短到什么程度完全不明 | Short on the sides, a little longer on top. |
Make me beautiful. | 理发师无法执行这个指令 | I'd like it layered, about shoulder length. |
Front hair don't cut. | 中式语序,且 front hair 不是刘海的常用词 | Can you leave the bangs alone? |
My hair is very many. | 「多」不是 many | My hair's really thick. |
You cut too short! | 指责式,理发师会 defensive | It's a little shorter than I wanted — can we adjust it? |
I don't like it. | 太笼统,对方不知道怎么改 | The shape is good, but could you take a little more off the top? |
Give me discount. | 缺冠词,且理发店通常不打折 | Do you have any weekday specials? |
1. take a little more off 是要求返工的标准说法。
Could you take a little more off the top?Could you take a little more off the sides?Could you take a little more off the back?
2. even it out 是"修齐"。
Could you even it out a little?
3. heavy
It feels a bit heavy up there 反面是 It feels thin(太薄)或者 I want more volume(想要蓬松)。
4. That's what I meant
That's perfect, that's what I meant.
I only noticed because I wear it tucked behind my ears. ——
6. I wish more people did 是真话。
Colorist(染发师) You(顾客,想染发但不清楚代价)
Colorist: Hi, come on in. So you’re thinking about color?
You: Yeah, but I wanted to ask questions before I commit. I’ve never dyed it before, so I don’t really know what I’m getting into.
Colorist: Smart. What were you thinking — all over, or just some highlights?
You: I don’t know the difference, honestly. Can you explain it?
Colorist: Sure. All-over means the whole head is one color. Highlights are just sections — it’s more subtle, and it grows out better.
You: So highlights are lower maintenance.
Colorist: Much lower. With all-over, you’ll see roots in about four weeks. With highlights you can go three or four months.
You: Okay, that matters to me. What about price — what am I actually looking at?
Colorist: For your length, highlights would start around two hundred, and all-over would be closer to two fifty.
You: Starting at two hundred. What makes it go up from there?
Colorist: Length, mostly. And if we need to lift a lot of color — going from dark to light is more work, sometimes two sessions.
You: Two sessions. Would I pay twice?
Colorist: Yes, unfortunately. I’d rather tell you now than surprise you.
You: I appreciate that. Okay — how long does one session take?
Colorist: Three to four hours for highlights. Bring a book.
You: Wow. Okay. And is it damaging? My hair’s already pretty dry.
Colorist: It can be. I’d do a treatment first if we’re going lighter. And honestly, with your hair, I’d stay within two shades of your natural color.
You: Within two shades. Why?
Colorist: Because going much lighter means more bleach, and with dry hair that’s where you get breakage.
You: Okay, that’s good to know. Can you do a patch test first? I’ve heard some people react to the dye.
Colorist: Absolutely — I do one forty-eight hours before every first-time color. It’s a small patch behind the ear.
You: And if it reacts, we don’t do it.
Colorist: Then we don’t do it. Or we use a different formula. Either way, we find out before it’s on your whole head.
You: Okay. One more — can you swatch the color first? I want to see it before it goes everywhere.
Colorist: I can do a strand test, yeah. I’ll color one small piece and you can see how it takes on your hair.
You: That’s exactly what I want. Okay, I’m in. Let’s book it.
Colorist: Great. Let’s do the patch test Thursday and the appointment Saturday.

| Is it damaging? |
| Can you do a patch test first? |
| Can you swatch it first? |
1. patch test
2. swatch / strand test
Can you swatch it first? 或者 Can you do a strand test?——染一小缕看效果,比看色卡准得多。
Going from dark to light is more work, sometimes two sessions.
4. shades
Within two shades of your natural color
5. lower maintenance
How much will it be total? 和 What makes it go up from there?
Stylist(理发师) You(顾客,想剪一个大改动,带了三张照片)
Stylist: Okay, you brought pictures?
You: Three of them, actually. This is the color I want — see how it’s warm, not ashy?
Stylist: Yeah, I see it. That’s a warm brown. Let me look at your hair in this light… okay, yours is darker, so we’d be lifting it a bit.
You: Is that okay with my hair?
Stylist: It should be. We’d do it in one session, but I’d add a treatment.
You: Good. Now the cut — this is the second picture.
Stylist: Ooh, that’s a big change. That’s taking it from here to about here, right? That’s four or five inches.
You: Yeah. Is that too much?
Stylist: It’s not too much, it’s your hair. But I want to make sure — that’s a big difference to get used to. Have you had it this short before?
You: Not since I was a kid. That’s why I’m nervous.
Stylist: Okay, here’s what I’d suggest. Let’s cut it a little at a time and check in as we go. That way you can stop me whenever you want.
You: That would help a lot. So you’d start with, like, two inches?
Stylist: Two inches, we look, then another inch, we look again. Doesn’t cost you anything but time.
You: Perfect. Okay, and the third picture is the styling — how it’s got that wave to it.
Stylist: Got it. That’s from a round brush and a dryer, mostly. Your hair’s naturally straight, so it won’t do that on its own.
You: So I’d have to style it every morning.
Stylist: If you want it to look like that, yeah. I can show you how to do it, but it’s about ten minutes.
You: Ten minutes every day is more than I want. Is there a middle version?
Stylist: We could cut some layers so it has movement on its own, and then you only need product, not heat.
You: That sounds more realistic. What product?
Stylist: A sea salt spray on damp hair. Scrunch it, let it dry. That’s it.
You: That I can do. Okay, let’s do all of it — the color, the cut, and the layers.
Stylist: Great. Just so you know, the whole thing will be about four hours today.
You: Four hours. Should I eat first?
Stylist: Ha — yes, definitely eat first.

| shade | 色阶 | within two shades |

1. lift
We'd be lifting it a bit
See how it's warm, not ashy?
3. a little at a time 是做大改动最聪明的做法。
Let's cut it a little at a time and check in as we go.
Does that take a lot of styling? 或者 Would it do that on its own?,能避免回家之后失望。
5. Is there a middle version?
比直接说 No, too much work 好得多。
How long will it take?,心里有数就不会中途又饿又烦。
Stylist(理发师) You(顾客,剪完想学怎么自己打理)
Stylist: Okay, how does it feel?
You: It feels lighter. And the color’s exactly what I wanted.
Stylist: Great. Now — you said you mostly air dry, right?
You: Yeah. So what do I actually do in the morning? I don’t want to spend twenty minutes on it.
Stylist: You won’t have to. Three things. First, don’t brush it when it’s dry — that’s what makes it frizzy.
You: Don’t brush it dry. Okay, so when do I brush it?
Stylist: In the shower, with conditioner in it. That’s it.
You: That’s easy. What’s the second thing?
Stylist: A little sea salt spray on damp hair. Scrunch it up like this — see? — and then leave it alone.
You: Scrunch and leave it alone. And the third?
Stylist: Don’t touch it while it’s drying. I know that’s the hard one.
You: Ha — that is the hard one. Okay. What about the color — how do I make it last?
Stylist: Wash it less, and use cold water when you do. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets the color out.
You: Cold water. That sounds miserable in winter.
Stylist: Ha. Lukewarm is fine, just not hot. And use a shampoo for colored hair — the regular stuff strips it.
You: Okay. How often should I wash it, realistically?
Stylist: Every other day if you can. Every day is what kills color fastest.
You: Every other day. I can try. And how long before I need to come back for the color?
Stylist: Three months for the highlights. And we can trim it at the same time — you’ll want a trim around eight weeks with these layers.
You: So eight weeks for a trim, three months for color. Let me put those in my phone.
Stylist: Good idea. And if it starts feeling dry, come in for a treatment. You don’t need an appointment for that.
You: Perfect. Thanks — this was actually really helpful.
Stylist: Of course. Most people never ask and then wonder why it doesn’t look the same at home.
You: Ha — that was going to be me.

|---|---|---|
| 干了别梳 | Don't brush it when it's dry.
| 湿的时候抓一抓就别管 | Scrunch it and leave it alone.
| 干的过程中别碰 | Don't touch it while it's drying.
What do I actually do in the morning?
Wash it every other day = 隔一天洗一次。
Hot water opens the cuticle and lets the color out.
I don't want to spend twenty minutes on it.
6. that was going to be me 是自嘲,很好用。
理发师说"大部分人从来不问",你回一句 that was going to be me,气氛会很轻松。

/bæŋz/。Can you leave the bangs alone?
3. inch and a half
自己说的时候也可以简化成 an inch and a half。
4. just a trim 里的 just 要弱读。
About this much — maybe an inch and a half. ——
