报名之后通常先有一次 orientation(培训说明会),然后才有 shift(班次)。
|---|---|
| What should I wear? |
| Where do I park? |
| Who do I ask for when I get there? |
| Do I need to bring anything? |
| Is there a training? |
| Is there a minimum age? |
| Is there a background check? |
I'm running ten minutes late.
Would you be willing to write me a letter of recommendation?
Coordinator(食物银行的志愿者协调员) You(想在周末做点志愿工作的上班族)
Coordinator: Thanks for calling the food bank. This is Jess. How can I help?
You: Hi, Jess. I saw the volunteer posting on your website and I wanted to ask a few questions before I sign up.
Coordinator: Great, go ahead. Are you looking at a specific role?
You: The packing one on Saturdays. What does that actually involve?
Coordinator: So you’d be in the warehouse, sorting donations and packing boxes. It’s mostly standing, and there’s some lifting — nothing over thirty pounds usually.
You: Okay, that’s fine. How long is a shift?
Coordinator: Three hours. Most people do nine to noon, and we usually have fifteen to thirty people on a Saturday.
You: Good. Now — practical stuff. What should I wear?
Coordinator: Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dusty, and closed-toe shoes. That one’s not optional — no sandals, no flip-flops.
You: Got it. Closed-toe shoes. Okay — where do I park, and who do I ask for when I get there?
Coordinator: There’s a lot in the back — park anywhere that isn’t marked for loading. And ask for me, Jess, or whoever’s at the sign-in table. There’s a sign-up sheet at the door, so just find your name.
You: Is there a training, or do I just show up?
Coordinator: There’s a short orientation your first time — about twenty minutes. After that you can just come to a shift.
You: Do I need to bring anything? And is there a background check for this role?
Coordinator: Just yourself — we’ve got gloves and aprons. And for the warehouse, no background check. That’s only for the roles where you work directly with kids or seniors.
You: That makes sense. So how do I actually sign up?
Coordinator: Fill out the form on the volunteer page, and pick your shift. There’s also a waiver — you can sign it online or at the door.
You: And if I can’t make a shift I signed up for?
Coordinator: Just let us know. Even the morning of is fine. What we can’t work with is people who don’t show up at all.
You: Understood. I’ll sign up for this Saturday and see how it goes.

|---|---|---|
I want be volunteer. | 缺冠词,be 后用动词原形也错 | I'd like to volunteer. |
I want to do volunteer. | volunteer 是名词也是动词,这里搭配错 | I'd like to sign up as a volunteer. |
What I should wear? | 语序错,疑问词后要倒装 | What should I wear? |
Have training or no? | 中式问法,英语里不这么说 | Is there a training? |
I want every Saturday. | 太笼统,对方不知道你要排班 | I'd like to sign up for Saturdays. |
Can I come anytime? | 太泛,志愿活动按班次排 | Which shifts need the most help? |
I am free, so I come. | 两句硬拼,逻辑也不成立 | I'm free on weekends — which shift works best? |
You need me? | 太直接,像在施舍 | Do you need more volunteers right now? |
I do volunteer before. | 时态错 | I've volunteered before. |
Send me the thing. | thing 太模糊 | Can you email me the sign-up form? |
1. shift
2. closed-toe shoes
第一次去之前问一句 Is there a training?,就不会白跑。
4. background check
What we can't work with is people who don't show up at all.
Greeter(现场接待) You(第一次来做志愿者的新人)
Greeter: Morning! Here for the volunteer shift?
You: Yeah, first time. I signed up online — the name’s Zhang.
Greeter: Welcome. Let me find you on the sheet. …Zhang, got it. Wei? Great. Here’s a name tag, and this is for you — you can keep it.
Wei?
You: Oh, a T-shirt. Thanks. So — honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing.
Greeter: Don’t worry, that’s everybody’s first day. Let me walk you through it. So this is the warehouse — donations come in that door, and the packing tables are over here.
You: Okay. And the people in the blue aprons?
Greeter: Those are the team leads. If you have a question, ask one of them — they’ve all been doing this a while.
You: Good to know. What am I actually doing today?
Greeter: Table three, sorting canned goods. It’s the easiest job to learn, and it’s where most people start.
You: Sorting how? By what?
Greeter: By type, mostly. And check the dates — anything expired goes in the red bin.
You: Got it. Expired goes in the red bin. Where are the gloves?
Greeter: Right by the table — grab a pair when you get there. The edges on the cans will cut you.
You: And the shift is nine to noon, right? Do we get a break?
Greeter: Around ten thirty we stop for a few minutes. Coffee and bagels in the corner — help yourself. And if you’re not sure about something, ask me or anybody in a blue apron.
You: Nice.
Greeter: Me, or anybody in a blue apron. There’s no such thing as a dumb question here. Let’s get you set up at table three.

1. I have no idea what I'm doing.
That's everybody's first day.
2. team lead
3. walk you through it 是「带你走一遍流程」。
Let me walk you through it. I'll show you the ropes.(我教你怎么做)。
4. help yourself
Thanks, I appreciate it.
You can keep it.
Organizer(志愿者项目组织者) You(做了几次的志愿者)
Organizer: Hey, Wei. Good work today — do you have a minute? This was your third Saturday, right?
You: Yeah, third one. And actually, I wanted to ask you something too. I’d like to commit to every Saturday, if that helps you plan. Same shift.
Organizer: That helps a lot, honestly. Can I put you down as a regular?
You: Yeah, please do. But I should say — I might miss one here and there for work travel.
Organizer: That’s fine — just tell me when you know. A regular who sometimes can’t make it is still a regular. So, second thing?
Organizer: Probably. What did you have in mind?
You: I’ve been on the packing tables. I’d like to try the client desk — the one where people check in.
Organizer: That one needs bilingual volunteers, so you’d be great there. But it needs training and it’s a bigger commitment, so realistically it’d be next round.
You: That works. Could you keep me on the list for the next round?
Organizer: Done. Now — you said you had a question?
You: Yeah. What skills do you actually need from me? I keep wondering if I’m useful.
Organizer: Honestly? Showing up on time and being decent to people. Everything else we can teach.
You: That’s reassuring. And do I need a food handler’s card for this? I know the kitchen needs one.
Organizer: Not for packing. Last thing?
You: Yeah — my school requires community service hours. Could you sign off on them?
Organizer: Of course. I can sign a form, or print a summary from our system.
You: I don’t know the exact number yet. Can I bring the form next week?
Organizer: Sure. And I’ll log today’s shift — three hours — so it’s on record either way.
You: Thanks. That makes it a lot easier.
Organizer: Happy to. Thanks for being consistent — that’s the part we really need.

|---|---|---|
| 固定班次 | I'd like to commit to every Saturday.
| 换岗位 | Is it possible to switch roles?
| 需要的技能 | What skills do you need from me?
| 时长证明 | Could you sign off on my hours?
|---|---|---|
I want change job. | 缺冠词,job 在志愿场合也不合适 | Is it possible to switch roles? |
I can come every week, maybe. | 自相矛盾,对方没法排班 | I can commit to most Saturdays. |
You sign for me. | 像命令,没有说明签什么 | Could you sign off on my hours? |
I very useful. | very 不能直接修饰形容词作谓语 | I'd like to be more useful — what do you need? |
I need certificate. | 缺冠词,也没说是哪种证明 | Could you sign off on my community service hours? |
What I can do? | 语序错 | What would be most helpful? |
I finish three times. | 中式计数,英语说次数用 times 但要搭配好动词 | I've done three shifts so far. |
Can you write me letter? | 缺冠词,也太突然 | Would you be willing to write me a letter of recommendation? |
I am busy next week. | 太生硬,像通知 | I'll be out of town next week — I'll let you know. |
You need me next week? | 语序和语气都不自然 | Do you need me for the same shift next week? |
1. commit
I'd like to commit to every Saturday.
Is it possible to switch roles?
Showing up on time and being decent to people.
4. sign off on 是「签字确认」。
Could you sign off on my community service hours?
I might miss one here and there for work travel.
Volunteer(食物银行志愿者) Librarian(图书馆馆员) Kid(你的孩子,九岁) You(带孩子来的家长)
Volunteer: Morning! Is this your first time volunteering?
You: For him, yeah. He’s been asking to come since I brought home the T-shirt.
Volunteer: Nice. How old is he? We usually want them at least eight, with a parent.
You: Nine, so we’re good.
Volunteer: Perfect. So for kids, we keep it simple — no knives, no boxes over ten pounds, and stay with a grown-up.
Kid: Can I do the cans?
Volunteer: You can. Put them in the box by type, and watch for dents — a bump or a flat spot on the can. Those go in a different bin.
You: He’ll be quoting that for a week. So — how do you usually split this up for families?
Volunteer: One adult on the boxes, the kid on sorting, and you switch when someone gets bored — usually around the forty-minute mark.
Librarian: Hi there. Are you here for the read-aloud session?
You: Yeah. He’s the reader — I’m just the ride.
Librarian: Perfect. Three kids are waiting, all around four or five. Have you done this before?
Kid: No. I’m kind of nervous. What if they ask me something and I don’t know?
Librarian: That’s normal. You just read out loud, and if you mess up a word or don’t know something, you say “good question” and keep reading. Nobody cares — they just want the story.
You: Do I need to sign anything before he starts?
Librarian: Yes — a parent waiver. It’s one page. And I’ll sign his service hours at the end if he wants them.
Kid: Can I read two books?
Librarian: If the kids are still with you. Twenty minutes each, then a break.
Librarian: That was great. You had them the whole time.
Kid: One of them asked me why the bear was sad and I didn’t know.
Kid: I said “good question” and kept reading. It worked.
Librarian: See? You’re a natural. Same time next week?
You: We’ll be here. Thanks for being so good with him.

Is there a minimum age?,别到了现场才知道不行。
What's the minimum age, and do I need to stay?
No knives, no boxes over ten pounds.
It usually happens around the forty-minute mark.
4. I'm just the ride.
I'm just here for the snacks.(我就是来吃点心的)。
If you mess up a word, nobody cares.
Team Lead(志愿者团队负责人,也是长期志愿者) Organizer(志愿者项目组织者) Volunteer(新来的志愿者) You(做了一年多的老志愿者)
Organizer: Hey, Wei — before we start, can I steal you for a second?
You: Sure. Everything okay?
Organizer: All good. I wanted to ask if you’d be interested in being a team lead.
You: Oh. What does that involve?
Organizer: You’d run one table, answer questions, and check that everyone’s got what they need. Same shift, just more responsibility.
You: How much more time does it take?
Organizer: About twenty extra minutes before and after, and you’d be the one people come to.
You: I can do that. I’d like to try it, anyway.
Organizer: Great. I’ll put you down starting next week, and you’ll shadow Marcy this week so you see how she does it.
You: Perfect. And speaking of that — do you need help training new volunteers?
Organizer: Always. You’d be good at it — you actually explain things instead of just doing them.
Team Lead: Okay, everybody — quick huddle. We’ve got a big pickup at noon, so let’s stay ahead of the boxes. Wei, we’ve got a new volunteer today — Devon. Can you show her the sorting?
You: Of course. I’ll take the back table too, and keep the cans moving. Devon, come with me — it’s easier to show than explain.
Volunteer: Thanks. I’ve never done this before. What counts as dented?
You: Nobody has, their first time. So — cans go in these boxes by type, and anything with a bump or a flat spot is dented. Those go in the red bin. If you’re not sure, ask me — that’s what I’m here for.
Organizer: Nice job today. Devon said you were patient with her.
You: She picked it up fast. Listen — can I ask you a favor? I’m applying to a program next spring, and they want a letter of recommendation. Would you be willing to write me one?
Organizer: I’d be glad to. But let me ask you — how long have you been with us now?
You: About fourteen months — pretty much every Saturday since last summer. And the deadline isn’t for a couple of months, so there’s time.
Organizer: Good. Then I can write you a real one, not just “he showed up.” Send me the details and I’ll put something together. And thank you for asking early — most people ask a week before.

1. team lead
Would you be interested in being a team lead? I'd like to try it. 或者 Can I think about it? 但接受之前一定要问清多花多少时间——How much more time does it take?
2. shadow
You'll shadow Marcy this week.
3. letter of recommendation
但有两个规矩:一是做够时间(组织者会反问 How long have you been with us?),二是提前几周甚至几个月问(Thank you for asking early.)。
Do you need help training new volunteers?
Team lead, Harbor Food Bank — ran a packing table weekly for 14 months and trained new volunteers.

1. volunteer
2. I'd like to 连读成 I'd-like-ta。
说 I'd like to sign up. 不要说成 I would like to,那太正式了。
3. What should I wear? 的 should I 连读。
should I 连起来读成 /ˈʃʊdaɪ/,听起来接近 shoulda。
5. commit
I'd like to commit to every Saturday.
6. Would you be willing to…?
