| 2 | test drive |
| 3 | 谈价 | 只谈 out the door price(出门价) |
| 5 | financing | Do you want to finance through us?
| 6 | paperwork | title、registration、insurance
out the door price
What's the out the door price on this one?I want to talk about the out the door number, not the sticker price.
- 看
title。
pre-purchase inspection。
Can I have my own mechanic look at it?
| What's the estimate? |
| Can you put that in writing? |
| Is the diagnostic fee applied to the repair? |
| Is this something that has to be done now, or can it wait? |
| Could you show me the old part? |
Salesperson(车行销售) You(来看车的顾客)
Salesperson: Hi folks, welcome in. Are you just looking, or is there something specific I can help you find?
You: Something specific, actually. We’re looking at the RAV4.
Salesperson: Great timing — we just got a couple in this week. Any particular trim you’ve got your eye on?
You: I don’t know the trims that well, honestly. What’s the difference between the LE and the XLE?
Salesperson: So the LE is the base — it’s got the safety stuff standard, which is the important part. The XLE adds the bigger wheels, the sunroof, and the power liftgate. It’s about two grand more.
You: Two grand for a sunroof. Hmm. Can I see the window sticker on the XLE?
Salesperson: Absolutely, it’s right here on the glass. So this one’s got the convenience package too.
You: Good to know. Can we take it for a test drive?
Salesperson: Of course. I just need to see a driver’s license and I’ll get you the keys. Do you have time for a longer one? There’s a route that gets on the highway.
Salesperson: Okay, so the seat adjusts here, and the mirrors are on this panel. Take your time pulling out.
You: Got it. So — how’s the road noise on the highway? That’s the thing that bugs me about my current car.
Salesperson: It’s pretty quiet, honestly. Let’s get on the highway and you can tell me what you think.
You: Okay, I’m getting on the ramp now. …Yeah, that’s fine. That’s much better than mine.
Salesperson: And that’s the lane-keeping working right there.
You: Huh. That’s a little weird, actually. Does it fight you?
Salesperson: It shouldn’t if you’re holding the wheel normally. Some people turn it off — there’s a button right there.
You: Okay. And what kind of mileage does this actually get in the real world? Not the sticker number.
Salesperson: Real world, most people see around thirty, thirty-two on the highway. It drops if you’re doing a lot of city driving.
You: That’s decent. Okay — I like it. Let’s go back and talk numbers.
Salesperson: Sounds good. And just so I know — is this something you’re looking to do this week, or more like next month?
You: This week, if the numbers work. I’m not in a rush, but I’m ready.
|---|---|---|
| Are you just looking, or is there something specific? |
| We’re looking at the RAV4.

Can we take it on the highway?,重点听三件事:高速噪音、上匝道时的动力、过减速带时的悬挂。
3. if the numbers work 是最安全的表态。
比 I'll take it(太快)和 I'm just looking(对方立刻不理你)都好用。
4. trim
What's the difference between the trims?,不然很容易花大钱买了一堆用不上的配置。
What's my trade-in worth?
Salesperson(车行销售) Manager(车行经理) You(准备今天买车的顾客)
Salesperson: Okay, I talked to my manager. Here’s where we landed.
You: Before I look at that — is this the out the door price, or is this before tax and fees?
Salesperson: That’s the selling price. Tax, title, and the doc fee get added after.
You: Okay, so that’s not the number I need. Can you show me the out the door price? Everything included.
Salesperson: Sure, let me rework it. …Okay, so with tax, title, registration, and the doc fee, you’re at thirty-four two.
You: And the doc fee — how much is that on its own?
Salesperson: Four ninety-nine. It’s a set fee, so it’s the same for everybody — that one I can’t move.
You: I’d rather not show the sheet, but it’s meaningfully less. What’s your best price on it?
Manager: Hi, I’m Marcus, the sales manager. So you’ve been shopping around — good, that’s smart.
You: Yeah, I’ve been to two other places. And honestly, the number needs to be better.
Manager: I hear you. Let’s talk about the whole deal instead of just the price. Are you trading anything in?
You: Yeah, a 2016 Civic, about ninety thousand miles. But I want to be clear — I’m negotiating the price and the trade separately.
Manager: That’s fair, that’s exactly how we should do it. …Okay, so on the Civic, I can do eleven five.
You: Eleven five. What would I get if I sold it myself?
Manager: Private sale? Probably thirteen, thirteen five. And in this state the trade value comes off the taxable amount — so it’s not as big a gap as it looks.
You: That helps. Now, the other thing — do you want me to finance through you?
Manager: We can do that, yeah. Do you want to finance through us? I can get you a rate in a few minutes.
You: Let’s see the rate. But I already have one from my credit union, so I’ll compare.
Manager: That’s the right way to do it. Okay — with the trade and a little off the price, here’s the new out the door number.
You: That’s closer. Now what about the add-ons? I saw an extended warranty on there.
Manager: It’s optional, but it covers you past the factory warranty. A lot of people take it.
You: I’ll pass on that, thanks. And the paint protection and rust proofing — take those off too.
Manager: You sure? The rust proofing is popular around here with the winters.
You: I’m sure — and I can always add it later. What’s the number without any of that?
Manager: Let me reprint it. …Here you go. And I’ll put everything in writing before you sign anything.
You: Thank you. Give me a few minutes to read through it.

I decide today. | 太绝对,等于放弃谈判空间 | I'm ready to buy today if the numbers work. |
Write on paper. | 少冠词,而且太生硬 | Can you put that in writing? |
1. out the door price
2. doc fee
How much is that on its own?
Let's do the trade separately.
4. wiggle room
Is there any wiggle room on the price? 比 Can you lower the price? That's a little more than I was looking to spend.(比我预算多一点)一起用,效果最好——你不说贵,只说超出预算,对方的压力小,反而更愿意让。
5. I'm ready to buy today if the numbers work.
Salesperson(二手车车行的销售) You(准备买二手车的顾客)
Salesperson: So this is the 2019 CR-V I was telling you about. Seventy-two thousand miles, one owner.
You: One owner. Do you have a Carfax on it?
Salesperson: We do, and we give it to you for free. I’ll print it out. Any accidents on it, it’ll be right on there.
You: Good. And before we go further — is the title clean?
Salesperson: Clean title, no liens. It’s right here in the file.
You: Okay. You’d be surprised how many listings don’t say. I called about one last week and it turned out to be a salvage title.
Salesperson: Yeah, that happens a lot with the smaller lots. We don’t touch those.
You: Good. So walk me through the Carfax. What am I looking at?
Salesperson: So here’s the accident history — nothing reported. Service records, and the odometer readings line up with the dates.
You: So no odometer rollback. Good. Now — can I have my own mechanic look at it?
Salesperson: Sure, as long as you bring it back the same day. We’ve got nothing to hide on this one.
You: Good, because I do that with every car. I’d rather spend a hundred and fifty now than three thousand later.
Salesperson: That’s smart. Some people skip it and then find out the hard way. And use your own shop, not ours — that way it’s independent.
You: I appreciate you saying that. So what should I have them check?
Salesperson: The usual — under the car for leaks, the frame, tires, brakes. And have them pull the codes, in case anything’s stored.
You: Right, the check engine light. Has it been on at all?
Salesperson: Not that I know of. But that’s exactly why you get it inspected.
You: Fair. And was it a lease before, or did somebody own it outright?
Salesperson: It was a lease. One owner, turned it in at the end.
You: Okay. Leases are usually maintained well. Let me call my guy and see when he can take it.
Salesperson: Take your time. And if the inspection comes back clean, we can talk numbers.
You: Sounds good. Oh — one more thing. Is the price on the windshield firm, or is there some room?
Salesperson: There’s usually a little room on used cars. Bring me the inspection and we’ll talk.

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 所有权证 | Is the title clean?
| 2 | 有没有抵押 | Any liens on it?
| 3 | 事故记录 | Has it been in any accidents?
| 4 | 里程真假 | Do the odometer readings line up?
| 5 | 第三方检测 | Can I have my own mechanic look at it?
| 6 | 保养记录 | Do you have the service records?
1. title
2. Carfax
Carfax(或 AutoCheck)是别人上报的记录汇总:事故、里程、保养、过户次数。
3. pre-purchase inspection
Can I have my own mechanic look at it?
My mechanic found a leak — I'd need that addressed in the price.
Service advisor(车行维修顾问) You(来修车的车主)
Service advisor: Morning. What are we looking at today?
You: My check engine light came on a couple days ago. And there’s a noise when I brake.
Service advisor: Okay. And how’s it driving otherwise?
You: Fine, I think. No shaking, no smell. It just feels a little soft when I stop. We’ll need to run a diagnostic first, right?
Service advisor: Right. That’s a hundred and twenty-nine dollars.
You: Is the diagnostic fee applied to the repair if I go ahead with it?
Service advisor: It is, yes. If you do the work with us, it comes off the total.
You: Okay, that’s fair. And call me with the estimate — I’d rather not sit here. I want it in writing before you do anything.
Service advisor: Of course. Nothing gets done without your approval. That’s our policy.
Service advisor: Okay, so we pulled the codes. It’s the front brake pads, and there’s a sensor that’s throwing a fault.
You: So what’s the estimate?
Service advisor: For the pads and rotors up front, six eighty. The sensor is another two forty.
You: Can you break down the parts and labor for me?
Service advisor: Sure. Pads and rotors are three ninety in parts, two ninety in labor. The sensor is one sixty in parts, eighty in labor.
You: Okay. Now — is the sensor something that has to be done now, or can it wait?
Service advisor: Honestly? The brakes you should do now. The sensor isn’t urgent — you can drive on it. It’ll just keep the light on.
You: Then let’s do the brakes and leave the sensor for now.
Service advisor: That works. Anything else you want us to look at while it’s up?
You: Yeah — could you check the battery and the tires while it’s up?
Service advisor: Sure, we’ll check those at no charge. …Battery’s testing fine. Your tires are at four thirty-seconds, so you’ve got some time.
You: Good. Oh — could you show me the old brake pads when you’re done? I’ve been burned before, so I always ask.
Service advisor: Absolutely. We keep them for you. A lot of customers ask. So — brakes only, and I’ll call you when it’s ready. Should be around four.
You: Perfect. And can you email me the estimate so I have it?
Service advisor: I’ll send it right now. And the final invoice will match it.
You: Great. That’s all I needed to hear.

Nothing gets done without my approval.
2. diagnostic fee
4. Could you show me the old part?
5. has to be done now, or can it wait
Mechanic(独立修车行师傅) You(想再问一家的车主)
Mechanic: So what’d the other shop tell you?
You: They said I need a new transmission. Twenty-eight hundred dollars.
Mechanic: Twenty-eight hundred. Huh. What were the symptoms?
You: It shifts hard sometimes, mostly when it’s cold. And there’s a little shudder at low speed.
Mechanic: Okay. Let me take a look before you decide anything.
You: That’s why I’m here. Go ahead.
Mechanic: Give me twenty minutes. I’ll put it on the lift and pull the codes.
Mechanic: Okay — I don’t think you need a transmission.
You: Really? They were pretty sure about it.
Mechanic: I’m not saying they’re lying. But the codes I’m seeing point at the fluid and the solenoids, not the whole unit.
You: So what would that run me?
Mechanic: Fluid and filter change, and we replace the two solenoids. Seven fifty, eight hundred out the door.
You: That’s quite a bit lower than the other shop quoted me. Why the difference?
Mechanic: Two reasons. One, dealer labor rates are higher and they’d use a factory reman unit. Two, replacing the whole thing is easier for them.
You: So is that wrong, or just expensive?
Mechanic: Not wrong — just more thorough. But if the solenoids fix it, you’ve saved two grand.
You: Okay. And what if it doesn’t fix it?
Mechanic: Then you’re out eight hundred and you still need the transmission. I’d rather you know that going in.
You: I appreciate the honesty. Can you put that in writing?
Mechanic: Sure. I’ll write it up as two options — try the fluid and solenoids first, or go straight to the transmission.
You: That’s helpful. Do you charge a diagnostic fee like they did?
Mechanic: Ninety dollars, and it comes off the repair if you do the work here. So — be straight with me. If this were your car, what would you do?
Mechanic: I’d try the fluid first. Six hundred bucks, and if the shudder’s gone, you’re done.
You: Then that’s what I’ll do. When can you get me in?
Mechanic: Thursday morning. Drop it off the night before and we’ll start first thing. And I’d rather have you come back next time than sell you a transmission today.

1. second opinion
I'd like to get a second opinion before I decide.
That's quite a bit higher than the other shop quoted me. Can you explain the difference?
4. If this were your car, what would you do?
注意用 were(虚拟语气),这是固定说法,说 If this is your car
Can you break down the parts and labor?、Is this something that has to be done now?、If this were your car, what would you do?

1. out the door
不要让 out 和 the 之间停顿——out the door price 说得越顺,越像常买车的人。
2. What's your best price?
5. I'd like to get a second opinion 里 I'd like to 读得很快。
6. Could you show me the old part?
