口语里会说 good credit(大概六百多以上)、excellent(大概八百以上),但每家贷款机构自己的门槛都不一样,别把某个数字当硬指标。
Banker(银行客户经理) You(研究生,刚来美国一年多,没有任何信用记录)
Banker: Hi, come on in. What can I do for you today?
You: Hi. I want to get a credit card. It’s my first one.
Banker: First one ever, or first one with us?
You: First one ever. I moved here about a year ago.
Banker: Okay. Then you probably don’t have a credit file yet. Have you ever had a loan or a card here?
You: No, nothing. I pay rent, that’s it.
Banker: Rent usually doesn’t get reported, unfortunately. So the system has nothing on you. That’s the number-one reason first applications get denied.
You: Oh. So I can’t get a card at all?
Banker: You can — we just have to pick the right one. Are you a student?
You: Yeah, graduate student. I have a stipend from the school.
Banker: Then a student card is a good place to start. Do you have a Social Security number?
You: I do. I got it for my campus job. And I brought my ID.
Banker: Good. Now, if the student card doesn’t go through, we’d look at a secured card. You put down a deposit, and that deposit becomes your credit limit.
You: So I’m basically borrowing my own money?
Banker: Kind of, yeah. But we report it, so you build a payment history. After a while, most people upgrade to a regular card and get the deposit back.
You: Okay, that makes sense. What’s the limit going to be?
Banker: For a first card, probably low. That’s normal, and honestly it’s fine — you don’t need a big limit to build credit.
You: And is there an annual fee?
Banker: Depends on the card. Some have one, some don’t. I’ll show you both so you can compare.
You: Okay. And does applying hurt my credit? I read something about that.
Banker: It’s a hard inquiry, so it can ding it a little. One application is not a big deal. Five in a month is.
You: Got it. So what do I do with the card once I have it?
Banker: Small purchases, pay the full balance every month, and set up autopay so you never miss a due date. That’s the whole recipe.
You: Autopay for the full balance, not the minimum?
Banker: Full balance. The minimum keeps you from being late, but the rest collects interest.
You: Okay. Let’s do the student card, then.

2. secured card
3. authorized user
4. ding
It can ding it a little. My score took a hit.、It dropped a few points.。
Rep(信用卡发卡行客服) You(刚拿到第一张卡,想弄清条款)
Rep: Thanks for calling Meridian Card Services. This is Alex. Can I get your card number?
You: Hi, Alex. I don’t have the card in front of me — can I give you my Social Security number instead?
Rep: That works. One moment… okay, I’ve got your account. What can I help you with?
You: I just got this card and I want to understand it before I use it. Can I ask you a few questions about the terms?
Rep: Of course, go ahead.
You: So first — what’s my APR?
Rep: It’s on your statement, and it’s a range, because purchases, balance transfers, and cash advances can all be different.
You: Okay. But when do I actually get charged interest?
Rep: If you pay the full balance by the due date every month, you don’t pay interest on purchases at all. Interest only kicks in when you carry a balance.
You: Oh, that’s good to know. So the APR only matters if I don’t pay it off.
Rep: Right. And card interest is expensive — it’s a much higher rate than a car loan or a mortgage. That’s why we always tell people to pay in full.
You: Got it. So what happens if I only pay the minimum?
Rep: Then the rest of the balance carries over and starts collecting interest. It keeps your account from going late, but it barely pays anything off.
You: Okay, so the minimum payment is a trap. Noted. Is there an annual fee on this card?
Rep: There isn’t one on your card. Some of our cards do have one, so it’s always worth asking.
You: Good. And the late fee — how does that work?
Rep: There’s a fee if you miss the due date, and it can go up if it happens again. And more importantly, once you’re thirty days late, it gets reported to the credit bureaus.
You: Okay, that’s the part I really want to avoid. How long do I have between the statement and the due date?
Rep: At least three weeks — that’s the minimum by law. So you always have time. The trick is just not forgetting.
You: Can I set up autopay so it pays the full balance?
Rep: You can. Just make sure it’s set to the full balance and not the minimum. A lot of people set it once and never look again.
You: Yeah, I can see how that happens. One more — what about cash advances?
Rep: Avoid those if you can. There’s usually a fee, and interest starts right away — there’s no grace period on a cash advance.
You: Okay. So: pay in full, set up autopay, skip the cash advances.
Rep: That’s the whole thing. You’ll be fine.

I don't want pay interest. | 缺 to,而且要说清靠什么方式避免 | I'd like to avoid interest — is paying in full enough? |
2. minimum payment
4. waive
Would you be able to waive the late fee this once?(这次能不能免掉滞纳金),很多银行会同意,尤其是你过去记录良好。
Loan officer(银行信贷部贷款专员) You(准备买一辆二手车)
Loan officer: Come on in. So you’re looking at an auto loan?
You: Yeah. I’m buying a car in the next couple of weeks, and I’d rather know what I can afford before I walk into a dealership.
Loan officer: That’s exactly the right way to do it. Do you know what you’re buying yet?
You: Not exactly. Something used, probably. Under fifteen thousand.
Loan officer: Okay. Have you checked your credit score recently?
You: I looked at it once. I think it was around seven hundred.
Loan officer: That helps. The rate depends mostly on your score, and then on the term and the age of the car.
You: So what would a pre-approval actually look like?
Loan officer: I’d run your credit, and if it looks good, I can approve you for an amount up to a certain price, at a certain rate, for a set number of months.
You: And then I take that to the dealer?
Loan officer: You do. And you negotiate like a cash buyer, because as far as they’re concerned, you already have the money.
Loan officer: The other thing is the term. We do thirty-six, forty-eight, and sixty months — three, four, or five years.
You: What’s the difference for me?
Loan officer: A longer term means a smaller monthly payment, but you pay more interest overall. A shorter term costs less in total, but the payment is higher.
You: Okay. And I have about three thousand for a down payment.
Loan officer: That helps. The bigger the down payment, the less you’re borrowing, and the less you pay in interest.
You: What about shopping around? My friend said I should check a couple of banks.
Loan officer: You should. Just do it in a short window — a couple of weeks — instead of spreading it over months.
You: Why does that matter?
Loan officer: Because each one is an inquiry on your credit. Do them close together and it counts as one shopping trip, not five separate applications.
You: Got it. So what do I need to bring for the pre-approval?
Loan officer: Photo ID, proof of income, and your down payment amount. And once you pick a car, you’ll need insurance before you drive it off the lot.
You: Right, insurance. I’ll make some calls about that.
Loan officer: And one more question you should ask any lender — is there a penalty for paying it off early?
You: Okay. Is there one here?
Loan officer: Not on our auto loans. But always ask.

口语里也直接说 a five-year loan。
What monthly payment are you looking for?(你想月供多少),因为把期限拉长,月供就能压得很低,而总价和总利息悄悄涨上去了。 Let's talk about the price first.
Marcus(朋友,在美国工作五年) You(想搞清楚自己的信用状况)
You: So how do I actually check my credit score?
Marcus: Easiest way is through your bank or your card’s app. A lot of them show you a score for free.
Marcus: Yeah, free. And checking your own score doesn’t hurt it — that’s a soft inquiry.
You: Okay, so what’s the difference between a soft and a hard inquiry?
Marcus: A hard inquiry is when you apply for credit — a card, a loan, an apartment. That one can drop your score a few points.
You: And it stays there?
Marcus: It shows on your report for a while, but the effect fades pretty fast. The problem is when you have a bunch of them close together.
You: Good to know. So what’s a decent score? What am I aiming for?
Marcus: The range is three hundred to eight fifty. Good is somewhere in the six hundreds and up, excellent is eight hundred and up. But it’s not a hard line — every lender sets its own cutoff.
You: Okay. And what actually moves it?
Marcus: Paying on time is the biggest one. That’s most of your score right there.
You: What else?
Marcus: How much of your limit you’re using. If your limit is a thousand and you’re carrying eight hundred, that looks bad.
Marcus: People usually say keep it under thirty percent of your limit. And then there’s how long you’ve had credit.
You: Which is why you told me not to close my oldest card.
Marcus: Yeah. Even if you barely use it, keep it open and put one small charge on it. Closing it shortens your history.
You: Got it. Can I get my actual credit report too? Not just the score?
Marcus: Yeah — you can get one free report from each of the three bureaus every year. Equifax, Experian, TransUnion.
Equifax、Experian、TransUnion。
You: Every year, from each one?
Marcus: Every twelve months. Spread them out — get one every four months and you’re covered all year.
You: That’s smart. So what am I looking for in the report?
Marcus: Mistakes. Wrong balances, accounts that aren’t yours, payments marked late that weren’t. If you find one, you dispute it with the bureau.
You: And that actually works?
Marcus: It does, but you have to send documents. Don’t just say it’s wrong — show them.
You: Okay. Last thing — what’s the fastest way to build it up?
Marcus: There’s no fast way. On-time payments, low balances, and time. That’s it.

Banker(你办卡那家银行的客户经理) You(网上申请信用卡被拒,拿着拒信来网点)
Banker: Hi again. What brings you back in?
You: I applied for a card online last week, and this came in the mail. It says I was denied.
Banker: Let me see it. …Okay, this is an adverse action notice. By law it has to tell you the reason, or tell you where to get it.
You: It says “too few accounts.” I don’t really understand what that means.
Banker: It means there just isn’t enough in your file for them to say yes. It’s not that you did anything wrong.
You: So could you tell me specifically why I was denied? Like, what would have to change?
Banker: Sure, let me pull it up. …Yeah — thin file, no installment loan, and one recent inquiry. Nothing alarming.
You: Okay, that’s less scary than it sounded. So does this letter mean I should apply somewhere else?
Banker: No — the opposite. Don’t fire off five more applications. Every one of those is another inquiry.
You: Right. So what should I do instead?
Banker: A few options. One, get a secured card and use it for six months or so. Two, if someone in your family has good credit, they could add you as an authorized user.
You: Authorized user — that’s where I’m on their card?
Banker: Right. Their history shows up on your report. It’s not a shortcut, but it helps.
You: What about a co-signer? Somebody told me about that.
Banker: That’s usually for loans, not credit cards. And be careful with it — the co-signer is on the hook if you don’t pay.
You: Okay, good to know. Should I call them and ask them to look again?
Banker: You can ask about reconsideration. It works sometimes, especially if something changed — like your income went up.
You: And the letter says I can get a free copy of my credit report?
Banker: It does. When you’re denied, you’re entitled to a copy from the bureau they used. Get it and check it for errors.
You: Should I try again in a few months?
Banker: I’d give it six months with the secured card, then come back. Your file will look completely different by then.
You: Okay. That’s a plan. Thanks for explaining it instead of just saying no.
Banker: Of course. A denial isn’t a door closing. It’s just a “not yet.”

I'd like to ask about a reconsideration.
5. co-signer

2. credit
thirty(30)重音在前、结尾短;thirteen(13)重音在后、结尾长。
说 the full balance 时,the 会快成 /ðə/,整句几乎连成一串:pay-the-full-balance。
What's my APR? Is there an annual fee?
6. denied
de-NIED、de-NY。被拒的正式说法是 Your application was denied.,口语里也说 I got turned down.。
