美国邻居的默认状态是"友好但不打扰"(friendly but not in your business)。
(I don't know if you realize…)→ 说影响(I've got an early shift)→ 提请求(Could you keep it down after eleven?)。
Marcus(对面 4D 的邻居) You(刚搬来 4B 一周)
Marcus: Morning.
You: Morning.
Marcus: Hey, you’re the one who just moved into 4B, right?
You: Yeah, that’s me. Wei. I moved in last weekend.
Marcus: Marcus. I’m right across the hall. Welcome to the building.
You: Thanks. Nice to finally meet you.
Marcus: Same here. How’s the move going? Still living out of boxes?
You: Pretty much. I’m down to the last couple.
Marcus: Been there. Hey, if you need a hand with anything heavy, just knock. I’m usually home after six.
You: That’s really nice of you. I might take you up on that.
Marcus: No problem at all. Oh — this is my floor.
You: Same here. See you around, Marcus.
Marcus: See you. And hey, the mailroom key is the same as your apartment key, in case nobody told you.
You: Good to know. Thanks.
Marcus: Also — trash pickup is Tuesday morning, so put it out Monday night. If you miss it, it sits there all week.
You: Monday night. Noted. Is there a recycling day too?
Marcus: Same day, but it goes in the blue bin. The building’s pretty strict about it.
You: Okay, blue bin. I’ll figure it out.
Marcus: You’ll get the hang of it. Oh, there’s my stop.
You: See you, Marcus. Thanks for the tips.
Marcus: Anytime. Welcome aboard.

|---|---|---|
| You must be the one who just moved in.
| I’m right across the hall. |
| Welcome to the building. |
| How’s the move going? |
| Still living out of boxes? |
| If you need a hand, just knock. |
| I might take you up on that.
| See you around. |
1. living out of boxes
2. take you up on that
If you need a hand
Marcus(邻居) You(要装书架,缺工具)
You: Hey Marcus, sorry to bother you. Do you have a sec?
Marcus: Yeah, what’s up?
You: I’m putting up a bookshelf and I’m short a drill. Any chance you’ve got one I could borrow?
Marcus: I do, yeah. Let me grab it.
You: You’re a lifesaver. I’ll get it back to you tonight.
Marcus: No rush. You need bits too?
You: Sorry, bits?
Marcus: The drill bits — the little pieces that actually go into the wall. Different sizes for different screws.
You: Oh, right. Yeah, if you’ve got a set, that’d be great.
Marcus: Here you go. The charger’s in the case too.
You: Perfect. Thanks a lot. I’ll bring it back tonight, cleaned up.
Marcus: Don’t worry about it. Hey, if the wall’s drywall, use the anchors in the side pocket.
You: Anchors. Got it. Thanks, Marcus.
You: Hey, here’s your drill back. Oh — and I grabbed you a coffee. It’s the least I could do.
Marcus: Oh, you didn’t have to do that. Thanks, man.
You: No, thank you. You saved me a trip to the hardware store.
Marcus: Anytime. How’d the shelf turn out?
You: Level, and it hasn’t fallen down yet.
Marcus: That’s the goal.

|---|---|---|
Give me your drill. | 命令句,很失礼 | Any chance I could borrow your drill? |
I want to borrow your drill. | 语法对但太直接 | Could I borrow your drill for a bit? |
Sorry, trouble you. | 中式直译,缺主语和结构 | Sorry to bother you. |
I will return you. | 意思是"我会归还你(这个人)" | I'll get it back to you. / I'll return it. |
Thank you very much, I am very sorry. | 道歉过度,让人不自在 | Thanks a lot — I really appreciate it. |
No, no, no, I can't accept. |
Please use my things any time. | 过度开放,容易造成后续尴尬 | Happy to lend it again if you need it. |
1. Any chance…
Any chance I could borrow your drill?
3. the least I could do 的用法。
You didn't have to do that。 It's nothing / Don't mention it。
Marcus(其实这次是楼上 5D 的邻居 Marcus —— 换个人物,还是同一个名字的另一种情况:这里用 Dave,避免混淆) Dave(楼上的邻居) You(第二天要早起)
You: Hey Dave, good morning. Got a second?
Dave: Morning. Yeah, what’s going on?
You: I wanted to ask you something — I don’t know if you realize, but last night there was a lot of noise from upstairs. Like till almost one.
Dave: Oh. Oh man, was that us? We had people over.
You: Yeah, I figured it was a one-time thing. It’s just — I’ve got a 6am shift this week, so I’m up at five.
Dave: Ah, that’s rough. Sorry about that. I should’ve warned you.
You: No worries, you didn’t know. Would you mind keeping it down after eleven, though? Just on weeknights.
Dave: Yeah, absolutely. I’ll keep it down. And if we’re ever too loud again, just text me — don’t wait till morning.
You: That’s fair. I didn’t want to be that neighbor, you know?
Dave: No, seriously, I’d rather know. Here, let me give you my number.
You: Thanks. Same for you — if my TV’s ever too loud, just knock.
Dave: Deal. And sorry again about last night.
You: All good. Have a good one.
Dave: Hey, one more thing — if it’s ever the weekend and we’re being loud, just come up. Don’t feel weird about it.
You: I appreciate that. Same goes for you.
Dave: Cool. See you around.

|---|---|---|
| Got a second? |
| I don’t know if you realize… |
| Was that us?
| I figured it was a one-time thing. |
| It’s just — I’ve got a 6am shift. |
| Would you mind keeping it down after eleven? |
| Just on weeknights. |
| I didn’t want to be that neighbor. |
| I’d rather know.
| If it happens again, just text me.
|---|---|---|
| 1. 铺垫 | Got a second?
| 2. 给台阶 | I don't know if you realize…
| 3. 说影响 | I've got a 6am shift this week.
| 4. 提请求 | Would you mind keeping it down after eleven?
| 5. 缩小范围 | Just on weeknights.
| 6. 留退路 | If it happens again, just text me.
You were so loud last night, I couldn't sleep at all.
1. that neighbor
I didn't want to be that neighbor
2. be that neighbor 的反面是 be cool about it。
Marcus(对面邻居) Delivery Guy(快递员) You
Delivery Guy: Hi, I’ve got a package for 4D. Nobody’s answering.
You: Oh, that’s my neighbor across the hall. I can take it if you want.
Delivery Guy: Are you comfortable signing for it?
You: Yeah, no problem. Where do I sign?
Delivery Guy: Right here. Thanks.
You: Hey Marcus, the mail guy dropped your package with me. I’m home till eight, just knock.
Marcus: Hey! Thanks for grabbing that. Was it a hassle?
You: Not at all. He just needed a signature.
Marcus: Man, that’s the second time this month. The driver keeps coming when I’m at work.
You: You could set up a delivery locker or have them hold it at the office. Might be easier.
Marcus: Yeah, I’ve been meaning to. Hey, if it happens again, would you mind?
You: Sure, just text me first so I know to expect it.
Marcus: Will do. Appreciate it. Oh — here, I brought you some of those cookies my wife made.
You: Oh, nice. Tell her thanks.
Marcus: Will do.

| Would you mind? |
| Just text me first.
1. Are you comfortable signing for it?
Tell her thanks 或者 That's so nice of her 就够了。
Marcus(对面邻居) You(要搬到另一个城市)
Marcus: Hey, you moving out? I saw the boxes.
You: Yeah. My lease is up and I got a job in Austin. Moving this weekend.
Marcus: Oh wow. Congrats. Sad to see you go, though.
You: Thanks. It’s been a good two years.
Marcus: Any chance you’re coming back?
You: Maybe someday. Who knows.
Marcus: Well, if you’re ever back in town, hit me up. And hey — do you need help loading the truck?
You: That’d actually be great. I’ve got one couch that’s not going to move itself.
Marcus: Say no more. What time?
You: Saturday at ten?
Marcus: I’ll be there. And listen, if you want, I can keep an eye on the place until the landlord finds someone.
You: That’s really kind of you. Actually, could I leave a box with you? Just until I get my new address sorted.
Marcus: Of course. No problem at all.
You: Thanks, Marcus. I’ll send you my new address once I’m settled.
Marcus: Sounds good. Oh — one thing. The landlord’s going to want the place clean, or he’ll take it out of your deposit. You know that, right?
You: Yeah, I’ve got a cleaning company coming Friday.
Marcus: Smart. All right, see you Saturday.
You: See you. And thanks for everything, man.
Marcus: Anytime. Good luck out there.

1. hit me up 是"联系我"的地道说法。
同义还有 reach out(稍正式)、give me a shout(英式偏多)。
It was nice knowing you 也完全够。
4. lease is up 和 lease ends。

Would you mind keeping it down after eleven?
2. I don't know if you realize 里的 know 要重读。
3. Sorry to bother you 的 sorry 要轻。
