|---|---|---|
Sorry? |
Sorry, I didn't catch that.
What was that?
Come again? |
Say that again? |
I'm still learning English
Bella(咖啡店店员,语速快) You(顾客,英语不是母语)
Bella: Hi there! What can I get started for you today?
You: Hi. Sorry, could you say that again? It’s a little loud in here.
Bella: Oh, sure! I said — what can I get for you?
You: Got it. Can I get a medium latte, please?
Bella: Medium latte. You want that hot or iced?
You: Sorry, hot or what?
Bella: Hot or iced — ice, cold.
You: Oh, iced. Iced, please.
Bella: You got it. What size — we got small, medium, large.
You: Medium is the middle one, right?
Bella: Yep, that’s right. Medium.
You: Then medium. Thanks.
Bella: Any milk preference? We got whole, oat, almond, soy.
You: Sorry, one more time — oat and what else?
Bella: Whole, oat, almond, soy.
You: Oat milk, please. Oh — and could you speak a little slower? I’m still learning English.
Bella: Oh, no problem at all! You’re doing great. Oat milk, medium, iced. Anything else?
You: That’s it. Sorry, what was the total?
Bella: Five twenty-five.
You: Five twenty-five. Got it. Here you go.
Bella: Thanks! I’ll have that right out for you.
You: Thanks. Sorry, where do I wait?
Bella: Right down there at the end of the counter. I’ll call your name.
You: Perfect. Thank you.

| One more time?
| Medium is the middle one, right?

| What was the total? |
| Where do I wait? |
| Got it.
1. Sorry?
Medium is the middle one, right?
I'm still learning English
4. Here you go 是递东西的万能句。
同类还有 Here you are(稍正式)、There you go(更随意)。
Dana(组长,主持周会) Ryan(同事) You(刚入职不久)
Dana: Okay, so the vendor’s behind, which pushes the launch to the eighteenth. Questions so far?
You: Sorry, could you back up a second? I didn’t catch the part about the launch date.
Dana: Oh, sure. We’re moving the launch to the eighteenth.
You: The eighteenth. And that’s because of the vendor?
Dana: Right — they need two more weeks for testing.
You: Got it. Sorry, one more thing — you said “soft launch.” What does that mean exactly?
Dana: Good question. It means we open it to a small group first, then everybody.
You: Okay, that makes sense.
Ryan: Sorry to jump in — do we still need the extra copy for the banner?
Dana: Yeah, Ryan, good catch. That’s still on you.
Ryan: Cool. And is the eighteenth firm, or is that soft too?
Dana: Ha. Firm. Marketing’s already got the emails scheduled.
You: Sorry, Dana — the last slide went a little fast for me. Could you go over the timeline once more?
Dana: Of course. Let me pull it back up.
You: Thanks. I’m writing this down.
Dana: No problem. Honestly, better to ask than to nod and get it wrong.
You: That’s what I keep telling myself.
Dana: Okay, so — kickoff on the fifth, testing the sixth through the fifteenth, launch on the eighteenth.
You: Kickoff fifth, testing sixth to fifteenth, launch eighteenth. Did I get that right?
Dana: You got it.
You: Perfect. Thanks for slowing down.
Dana: Anytime. Okay, moving on.

| Could you back up a second? |
| I didn’t catch the part about… | ……
| Sorry, one more thing — |
| What does that mean exactly? |
| That makes sense. |
| Good catch. |
| Is that firm? |
| Could you go over it once more? | go over = 过一遍 |
| Better to ask than to nod and get it wrong. |
| Did I get that right?
开场加上 Sorry to jump in 或者 Quick question —,然后直奔问题就好。
Kickoff fifth, launch eighteenth — did I get that right?
What does that mean exactly?
4. Good catch
Sam(朋友,等你开车去接他) You(在高速上,蓝牙通话)
You: Hey Sam, it’s Wei. Can you hear me?
Sam: Hey! You’re — kind of breaking up. Say that again?
You: I said, can you hear me?
Sam: Now you’re okay. Barely. Where are you?
You: On the highway. I think I’m gonna lose you — there’s no signal out here.
Sam: You’re gonna what?
You: Lose you! Bad signal!
Sam: Okay, I got “signal.” What time are you picking me up?
You: Sorry, you cut out. What did you say?
Sam: What TIME?
You: Oh — six thirty. Six thirty.
Sam: Got it. Six thirty. And where?
You: Sorry, one more time — where what?
Sam: Where should I wait?
You: Oh. Out front. In front of your building.
Sam: Out front, okay. Hey — if we get cut off, just text me.
You: If we what?
Sam: Text me! Send a message!
You: Oh, yeah. Yeah, I’ll text you.
Sam: Okay. See you at six —
You: Hello? Hello? … And we’re dead.
Sam: Hey — that was rough. Can you hear me now?
You: Yeah, way better. Sorry about that.
Sam: No worries. So, six thirty, out front?
You: Six thirty, out front. I’ll text you if anything changes.
Sam: Perfect. See you then.
|---|---|---|
| Can you hear me?
| You’re breaking up.
| You cut out.
| I think I’m gonna lose you.
| The signal’s bad out here.
| Say that again? |
| What did you say?
| If we get cut off, just text me.
| That was rough.
| Way better. | way = 得多 |
| I’ll text you if anything changes. |
1. 电话里听不清,说 You're breaking up,不要说自己。
I can't hear you 也能用,但 You're breaking up 把问题归给信号,不归给对方,听起来舒服得多。
Six thirty, out front
4. Way better 里的 way 是"得多"。
way better、way worse、way louder 都是日常说法,比 much better 更口语。
Tony(物业派来的维修工,说话快,口音重) You(住户,厨房水管漏水)
Tony: Alright, so what we got here is the shutoff valve’s seized and the supply line’s corroded, so I gotta swap the whole assembly, which means the water’s off about an hour. That okay?
You: Sorry — you’re going a little fast for me. Could you slow down?
Tony: Oh, my bad. Sure. No water for one hour. Okay?
You: Okay, one hour. Got it. And what are you fixing, exactly?
Tony: The valve. This thing. Right here under the sink.
You: Ah, I see it. So that’s the part that won’t turn?
Tony: Right. And this line here — rusty. That’s a leak waiting to happen.
You: Sorry, “a leak waiting to happen”? I don’t know that one.
💬 你: 抱歉,“a leak waiting to happen”?
Tony: Ha — it means it’s gonna leak soon. For sure.
You: Oh! Got it. So it’s only a matter of time.
Tony: Exactly. You got it.
You: Okay. Sorry, one more question — do I need to be home for this?
Tony: Nah, I got a key from the office. I’ll lock up after.
You: Great. And how much is it gonna run me?
Tony: Parts and labor, probably around a hundred fifty. Office bills you.
You: A hundred fifty. Sorry — could you say that number again?
Tony: One-fifty. Hundred and fifty bucks.
You: Got it. Thanks. Sorry for making you repeat everything.
Tony: No worries, man. Better than you nodding and then calling me back tomorrow.
You: Ha, true. Okay, I’ll get out of your way.
|---|---|---|
| You’re going a little fast for me.
| Could you slow down?
| My bad. |
| What are you fixing, exactly?
| I don’t know that one. |
| It’s only a matter of time.
| Do I need to be home for this?
| How much is it gonna run me?
| Could you say that number again? |
| Sorry for making you repeat everything. |
| I’ll get out of your way.
You're going a little fast for me——把问题归给语速,而不是对方的发音。
I don't know that one 比 What does it mean 更随意、更好听,而且等于告诉对方"我在学,你教我一下"。
One-fifty、a hundred fifty、fifteen
4. I'll get out of your way 是"我不打扰你了"。
Ryan(同事,爱讲段子) Priya(同事) You(听懂了每个词,但没懂笑点)
Ryan: …and that’s when he realized he’d been emailing the wrong Sarah the whole time.
Priya: Oh no. Ha!
You: Okay, I laughed, but I have no idea why that’s funny.
Ryan: Ha, fair. Do you know what “reply all” is?
You: Yeah — everybody on the thread sees it, not just the person you meant.
Ryan: Right. So he wrote this really personal message, and instead of hitting reply, he hit reply all. Went to his whole team.
You: Oh! Oh, that’s bad.
Priya: It’s so bad. Forty people read “I miss you.”
You: Okay, now it’s funny. Wait — is that a real story?
Ryan: Sadly, yes.
You: No way.
Priya: Oh, it’s real. He still works here. Different floor now.
You: Ha! Okay, one more — earlier you said something about “throwing someone under the bus.” What’s that?
好,再问一个——你刚才说"throwing someone under the bus",那是什么意思?
Ryan: It means blaming someone else so you don’t get in trouble.
You: So like, “he threw me under the bus in the meeting”?
Ryan: Exactly. You’d use it with friends, not with your boss.
You: Good to know. And “that tracks”? Priya said that earlier.
Priya: Oh — it means “that makes sense, that’s not surprising.”
You: So if I say “Ryan’s late again,” you’d say “that tracks”?
Ryan: Rude. But yes.
You: Ha! Okay, I’m getting there.
Priya: You’re doing great. Half the office doesn’t know what “that tracks” means either.

| No way.
| What’s that? / What does that mean? |
| You’d use it with friends, not with your boss. |
| Good to know.
| I’m getting there.
| Half the office doesn’t know either. |
I laughed, but I have no idea why
earlier you said something about … 单问 What does that mean 常常得到一句词典解释,还是不会用。
美式口语分场合:throwing someone under the bus 能跟同事说,that tracks 很随意,my bad 跟朋友说没问题。 Can I say that at work?,能避免用错场合。
4. No way 有两副面孔。
升调 No way?

Sorry, could you say that again?
I'm still learning English
